After the fashion guru’s in the Bossip comments went crazy on Victoria’s Emmy outfit, we decided to dig further and see what inspired such a bold choice in wardrobe.

Victoria says that Obama’s health reform really hit home for her and inspired her to use the Emmy’s red carpet as a platform to bring awareness to her support for Obama:

“Yesterday, the opportunity presented itself “Lights, camera, and no healthcare action?’ Setting the ruffles and caviar dreams aside is but a meager gesture to echo the herculean efforts of a healthcare reform package long overdue and one which President Obama is introducing for all Americans,” Rowell told ESSENCE.com. “I spent 18 years in foster care, enduring inadequate health and dental care and unforgivably, was turned away more than once at a doctor’s office. Nationally, 25,000 foster youth annually emancipate from foster care without health coverage,” says Rowell. “I emerged from Washington DC Health and Human Services as a proud American citizen–an advocate not a victim.”

Nice gesture Victoria but you know….

  • Kymberli

Umm… she would have been better off taping the 1,000+ page reform document to her body! This dress makes no sense! It’s ugly and VERY cheap looking! If your gonna do it, do it big! This is tacky sorry V! FAIL!

  • blkathena

the dress is from GHANA. they make those kind of prints when making political statements

  • AMYWINEHOUSEFAN

LOOOVE IT. Go ahead girl rock that OBAMA DRESS..SHITS HOT…DIFFERENT AND BOLD AND ITS MAKE A BETTER STATEMENT THEN THE TYPICAL LABELED GUCCI PRADA LOUTBOUTIN AND ALL THAT OTHER WHITE LABELED MATERIALIZTIC TYPICAL SH*T. I agree. GOOD idea, poorly executed. Obama’s face should not be part of the train. That shows lack of respect IMO

  • what that?

what does this does the dress says..the dress does not even have a sentiment on it,not saying anything.. I could see you rocking a old fashion t- shirt saying whatever..but this..no..do not wear this dress again..

  • uptowngirl

She just wanted attention imo. Fail

  • drenk

its not about being eurocentric its about takin a table cloth and tryin to pass it off as fashion. there have been celebrities that have pulled off non-western wear, but this just looks like something youd see at a flea market to hang on a wall

  • PErvster

Hell I get it. Do your thang Victoria Rowell. Plus you still looking kinda good, so I’m actually imagining what’s under that thing.

  • pkwasi

thank you all for showing so much support for the change agenda, forget about how cheap the cloth might look to you.the African or if you like Ghanaian symbols beneath the print have profound meanings.the stool is called “ahindwa” “seat of a King” and the other round-like figure is “Gye Nyame” “only God” so you can sum up like “a kingship only God can put an end to.

  • eveinthegarden

    I love it…rock it Victoria!

  • Black Barbie

Victoria’s dress is a West African design. When he and the family went to Ghana, the people greeted him with fabric, dresses, and shirts with his and Michelle’s pictures. It’s considered a tribute!

  • I’m Just Me: KEEPING IT REAL SINCE 1983

I actually like it. It isn’t that bad. It is no worse than the Toni Braxton Campbell Soup Dress.

  • Sole Soul Jah

Its also Part of Tanzanian Culture. They are called Kanga or Vitenge. They have numerous symbolic meanings. If you look it Up you will also realize they are very Fashion Foward, in Parts of East Africa (especially Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda), as women and african designers make dresses out of them. Check out major African Designers. Like someone said she is shinning a light in an area where people look down on the simplest things as bing sub-par. Fashion is greatly used for political and social movements so why not now and when is there a better time. Look at the bigger picture.

  • joey

how is the print from kenya? The symbols beneath the fabric is Ghanaian symbols which has meaning, do you understand the meaning of the symbols?

  • The Real Deal

Table cloth? R U crazy everything on that gown, has an African message or meaning. What does your clothing say, money to Prada, Gucci dummy
I’m not commenting on this site anymore, most of you are uneducated and ignorant. Its time Folk to get out of La La land and make a stand, on something if not do it for your children. DAMN

  • Brandon Gammill

That dress is as ugly as the Presidents health-care ideas. Go to Cuba, commie.

  • Norn

the Emmys are for entertainment not for political agendas…..this approach was in poor taste..She could have gotten a lot more positive response doing a public service announcement

  • http://aol Alice

Go Rowena !! It’s time we had good healthcare in this country11

  • Rawrr

    Epic fail.

In all the people here , there is not an educated statement. To wear someone face on your outfit is normal in many part of Africa. It is used very common)for wedding, ceremonies, baby birth and even funerals.Fabric,(in contradiction to most views here in the state) are most of the time with message and sentences / meaning. It is just a statement of your attachement to either the job the individual is doing or himself. The same way many people carry pic of their family or friends on wallet, cars , wear some silly hat, shoes(in the name of fashion)It maybe strange for some cultures but it does not make it unfashionable.I love the fabric, I do not like the model with that specific fabric because fabrics like that are made to be used with imagination. She is also not supposed to put his face on the train but I guess she tried . YOu rock girl!!!! She kept simple and miss it.The fabric was used For Obama visit and victory in AFRICA .
People,I understand that she dressed differently from what you call fashion but for a lot of people out there,a little bit of studies will help!Too much ignorance !!!
