I HATE to hear stories like this. I absolutely do! This is so freaking sad. I mean kids were just fighting all over the place and probably over nothing. My prayers are with this young man’s friends and family.

We talk and talk about how white folks keep us down and how the system gives us nothing, but in all reality I’m starting to feel like WE are our own worst enemy. Look at this mess. Where is the accountability? Honestly before we try to address all the problems other people have with us, we need to fix the problems in our communities.

In any case, it is so sad, on many levels (the children, our future, the families of both the victims and the perps, etc). Some parts of chicago always remained like this. I remember my Dad saying how some areas he’ll never go to.

You have females have children & their dad either not a part of their lives or have been killed in gang violence. Mom could be on drugs, grandma could be raising kids… you never know. These kids have no direction, no beliefs, nor care of anohter human life b/c they do not value their own lives. Someone needs to tell these children, they are important, make something of yourselve, go to school & meet your future wife.

I know he’s the POTUS and has other more pressing issues, I really do understand that, but when he can make a PERSONAL pitch to bring the 2016 Olympics to your city, but then ignore the violence that is plaguing the same streets, I have a problem with that. The city is so huge you’ve got to travel at least 40 minutes by train to get from where this crime took place (south side of Chicago), to downtown chicago.

@mojojojo – no, this is just hitting the national circuit. Gang violence in Chi-town has been bad, with some even saying it’s the “worst summer in memory”. Back in May, I think, there was an article about 1 black youth per week being killed due to gang violence. One weekend in particular this summer, there were 4 killings and 2 wounded (6 shootings in one weekend), all due to gang/gun violence. Now, the world at large may not know, but I tend to think that Obama, being that it’s his hometown, would know by now.

My heart goes out to the young man’s family. However, i’m just trying to figure out how come he didn’t just runaway from all that foolishness? Plus, i’m suprised that he died because it didn’t look like that he was beat up that bad. Even though he was hit in the head, it was with a board and not a bat.I’ve seen alot worse. Maybe it was because he was small.

I just heard on the news that he was targeted because he didn’t join a gang….Now, people who live in these gang infested areas need to get a clue! If you live in these areas and know that gangs are trying to get at your kids, you can’t let your kids walk the streets by themselves! Everybody acknowledges that incarceration rates among young black males are much higher than among whites or Hispanics. An August 2003 Bureau of Justice Statistics analysis shows that 32 percent of black males born in 2001 can expect to spend time in prison over the course of their lifetime. That is up from 13.4 percent in 1974 and 29.4 percent in 1991. By contrast, 17.2 percent of Hispanics and 5.9 percent of whites born in 2001 are likely to end up in prison.

As for violent deaths, we asked the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for a list of the ten leading causes of death for black males, aged 18 to 24, in 2004. The top three causes of death in this age group were (1) homicide (2,140 deaths), unintentional injury (948 deaths), and suicide (332 deaths). Deaths from HIV AIDS ranked sixth (67 deaths.) If we add the homicide, suicide, and HIV deaths together, we get 2,539 deaths. That is a combined death rate from violent causes or AIDS of around 0.13 percent for this segment of the population. Hardly an epidemic.

Teaching starts at home. A lot of mothers are either crack heads themselves or working long hours so they can get their hair did and party on weekends….People just don’t care about their children…. I’m the product of a single mom who raised 6 kids…. 4 out of 6 kids GRADUATED from college with one currently in college….my mom controlled her household…my brothers weren’t in gangs nor wore earrings, ect….No excuses people!!

What is going on in Chicago with all this violence against these children?

I am 100% involved in my children’s lives and involved in my community as well. This black on black crime and hate is getting outrageous and ridiculous! People need to wake up and tell that inner hate that I will not let you win today or any other day! What is so hard about complimenting another black person, instead of judging them because of their hair, shoes, clothes etc… I tell you life is to short to waste, when you have a long prosperous road ahead of you. I come in peace to all my brother’s and sister’s. I’m not here to judge or put anybody down. But lord knows we need a world peace day amongst blacks! Our ancestors are turning over in their graves, because of the ignorance of today’s adults & youths. Just encouraging someone will go a long ways, than saying negative remarks to someone.
