In 1961, a young African-American man, after hearing President John F. Kennedy’s challenge to, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country,” gave up his student deferment, left college in Virginia and voluntarily joined the Marines.
In 1963, this man, having completed his two years of service in the Marines, volunteered again to become a Navy corpsman. (They provide medical *****istance to the Marines as well as to Navy personnel.)
The man did so well in corpsman school that he was the valedictorian and became a cardiopulmonary technician. Not surprisingly, he was *****igned to the Navy’s premier medical facility, Bethesda Naval Hospital , as a member of the commander in chief’s medical team, and helped care for President Lyndon B. Johnson after his 1966 surgery.
For his service on the team, which he left in 1967, the White House awarded him three letters of commendation.
What is even more remarkable is that this man entered the Marines and Navy not many years after the two branches began to become integrated.
While this young man was serving six years on active duty, Vice President ***** Cheney, who was born the same year as the Marine/ sailor, received five deferments, four for being an undergraduate and graduate student and one for being a prospective father.
Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, both five years younger than the African-American youth, used their student deferments to stay in college until 1968. Both then avoided going on active duty through family connections.
Who is the real patriot? The young man who interrupted his studies to serve his country for six years or our three political leaders who beat the system? Are the patriots the people who actually sacrifice something or those who merely talk about their love of the country?
After leaving the service of his country, the young African-American finished his final year of college, entered the seminary, was ordained as a minister, and eventually became pastor of a large church in one of America ’s biggest cities.
This man is Rev. Jeremiah Wright, the retiring pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ.

I am a Hillary supporter because she fights for the things that are important to me. I am a mother of two and a special education teacher. Health care is important, treatment of the disabled, social security and getting out of Iraq are all very important. We cannot leave this country to a novice who used a speech he made in 2004 as his only qualification. Obama has not shown me that deserves my vote… being Black isn’t enough!!
I have worked with the Democratic party since before I could vote and I believe that Hillary is the best our party has to offer!

Just a lot of shenanigans with the race thing and jabs at each other. So America is in for the same thing all over again but with different faces.

In all actuality Barack won the city of Philadelphia by 64%, what he didn’t win overall was the little racists’ redneck towns, of Altoona, Reading, Lancaster, ect… So the people of Philadelphia did play their part and they did a damn good job of doing so. What you idiots fail to realize is that Barack KNEW that she was probably going to win the state of PA, his major concern was cutting into her lead, which he did, and splitting the delegates, which he did. I completely disagree. Obama had 5 weeks to prove himself and he did. In the beginning of those 5 weeks Hillary was favored to win PA by 28%. She had, the mayor of philadelphia, and the Governer backing and supporting her. Within those 5 weeks he signifcantly reduce her lead, and she only won by 10% from 28%, a state that she was going to win anyway. If thats not proving yourself, then I don’t know what is.
And what does that say about her loyal supporters?
Another thing, the black vote has nothing to do with it. Do you watch or read the news? It has been the young white and middle age americans that have been showing up to these polls and giving him these numbers.

I am an Obama supporter but we can agree to disagree. And we can also agree to agree which I do on one point you made upthread.
I too said months ago on this board that I felt Obama should have been fluent in Spanish, like his sister, from the start of his campaign. I too feel it is necessary STRATEGY these days.
However, let us be clear on this. English is the official and common language of the United States and Spanish is not more worthy of acknowledgement than the languages of other immigrants and their ancestors.
On the other hand, Hispanics would greatly benefit if instead of resenting Obama they would look to Obama’s (and Governor Richardson’s) example and mastered the English language as well as they have their own.

IMHO, being fluent in Spanish would have broadened Obama’s plurality. With fluent Spanish, Obama becomes black, white, and grey.
I’d love to see our next president Obama learn Spanish through accelerated immersion before the general election.
