This really messes me up knowing that could’ve been anyone of my family members or friends leaving a club after a good night. He was having a bachelor party, he wasn’t doin anything wrong and these crooked cops walked up and murdered him. Thats the last thing you would expect to happen. My heart goes to his family and fiance. I hope they sue the Police Department, the state, and those officers. I hope they do everything they can to convict those officers of murder and take their badges away. The full text of Police Commissioner Kelly’s statement:

I cannot make any comment on the verdict because any disciplinary action that might emanate from this case will ultimately come before me. We have been asked by the U.S. attorney to hold up any disciplinary proceedings until they make a determination whether or not they are going to be involved in this matter. So we’ll await word from the U.S. attorney before we will proceed with any formal investigation.

There have been no problems. Obviously there will be some people who are disappointed with the verdict. We understand that. We have had no history of violence since this incident began as far as the vigils, the memorial services are concerned. We don’t anticipate violence but we are prepared for any contingency.

We have prepared. We have done some drills and some practices with the appropriate units and personnel if there is any violence. But again we don’t anticipate violence.

I can’t have a reaction, as I said. Any disciplinary action that may emanate from this case will ultimately come to me to make a determination on. So it’s inappropriate for me to comment on the verdict.

This is really sad. I had a friend in high school who got shot in the back by the police and he was in handcuffs. The story that the police told was he tried to flee and hop a fence. Now remember he was HANDCUFFED!!!! No charges what so ever were filed against the officers involved.

Are you freakin kidding me that Mike Vick is in prison over a dog, but yet these three can shoot an unarmed man 51 times, try to kill his 2 friends as well, and they walk free with not so much as probation….sad sad sad day…the legal system would rather protect its so called own than hand down the appropriate justice.

Something is terribly wrong when 3 police officers are the ONLY ONES FIRING guns!! Didn’t either of the 3 notice that no shots were being returned? If no one is firing back, why is it necessary to continue to shoot that many bullets?

Why didn’t any of the officers testify on their own behalfs. That seems strange that you are accused of murder, but you don’t want to speak on your own behalf? Seems like the 3 didn’t want to be cross examined.

Bottom line is an innocent black man lost his life. He was an innocent, unarmed man that went out with friends to celebrate his upcoming nuptials. Because of the recklessness of (ONCE AGAIN) the NYPD, a life was taken and it outrages me that they were not held accountable for their actions. I have not doubt that if his name were “Billy Bell”, this case would have had a completely different outcome.

Honestly a majority of white people only care about Spilled (white) blood, loss of power, and loss of money. the judge really missed the mark with this case!!!

OK, so let’s say the case was that the 3 cops felt there was reasonable belief that the men were armed. Even with that belief, since when is it police policy to fire BEFORE you see any weapons? There were no shots fired, no weapons…sooooooooo why did they start shooting?

Now their story is that, Bell tried to run them over with a car. Maybe he was trying to get away. At a club when “unidentified” men are deemed a threat for NO OBVIOUS REASON AT ALL, who wouldn’t get in their car and try to break the hell out ASAP.

OK even if they thought Bell tried to hit them with their cars, why not aim for the tires.

What were the 3 officer’s justifications for even following the men out of the club again?

Bottom line is this Tiger, this is a case of NYPD police corruption (it isn’t the first time, and won’t be the last). They clearly used excessive force. All they had to do was immobilize the vehicle by aiming at the tires. Seems like those cops got a little power hungry and proceeded with this “I’m above the law” attitude. Which they obviously are, since they were acquitted.

We can demand that the FBI review this case for violation of civil rights.

We can ask our mayors and city leaders to do better psychological/social screening for policemen. Clearly, there are some people who should NOT be cops. Also policemen need some diversity training. There is clearly some racial profiling and stereotyping here.

Finally, we can ask for community oversight and review of police brutality cases.

I knew there had to be a reason why the NYPD called all off duty officers in to work and wouldn’t allow any officers to take any vacation days. They KNEW what this horrible azz outcome would be today.

Just like with Diallo, the evidence was clear, yet they couldn’t possibly allow some good ole boys in blue to go to jail.

How can someone feel safe at night with the police? How can someone not have a bitter taste in their mouth?

Some of your statements are true to a point. On the account that as Black people especially Black men we have to change our primitive images that we display, but this was definately excessive force, Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles combined can see that. I’ve had many cops tell me that they enjoy teeing off on a suspect. Both black and white cops tell the same story. You have to know the type of person that police work attracts. Not everyone is like that, but enough of them are for it to be a systemic problem.

I do not hate cops. I never said that. My boyfriend is in the process of trying to become a police officer with the port authority. This is really sad and unfortunate. Those police officers treated these men like animals. They sent Michael Vivk to prison for animal cruelty but they let off 3 men for killing a black man. That just goes to show how the government of this country see black people.

These victims were not breaking any law or committing any crimes.

The officers were probably angered at the fact that these men didn’t do what the officers EXPECTED them to do!!

and from what I hear about the history of the corruption of the NYPD…that could be anything!

so what was the result? DEATH, MURDER of someone who couldnt defend himself.

and as this case proved with the aquittal…the family can’t defend themselves either as the verdict im sure has snatched away all sense of security and hope in having justice served for this outrageous event!

Not this compares, well maybe it does, a few years ago in Tampa, Fl a white female teacher, ran over a group of black kids with her car because she was afraid of the neighborhood she was in. Her family cleaned the car up and didn’t even come forward until days later. This chick got off with probation and is currently trying to get her teaching gig back. BTW, two out of the four children who were all siblings, died from the accident. This is America people

I cried when I heard the verdict this morning. But the judge said that the prosecution failed to present a case showing the officers used unnecessary force by shooting those men & killing Bell.

My question is…what the hell were their attorney’s doing all this time??

Last year a young WHITE boy took a fake gun to school to scare some bullies. Long story short the police were called and the school evacuated. There was a stand off, the police told the boy to put the gun down, he hesitated, they shot and killed him, the little boy was only 14. It wasn’t til he was down that they realized the gun was fake. The cop was also White. There was a big debate going on out here because the community was outraged, they felt the police could’ve handled the situation better they could’ve disabled the boy (shot him in the leg or something)and not kill him….but not once did you hear them screaming RACE…

They did not “bother” everyone who came out of the club. Bell and company were in a fight with another group of club goers prompting the undercover cops to identify themselves when Bell encouraged one of his friends to shoot the other club goers. Unregistered handguns were found in the car. The police were coming out from undercover which they never do unless someone’s life is in immediate danger. As for the argument that these men did not identify themselves as police even the clearly biased witnesses concede that they did. Even if you don’t know someone is a police men you should not be trying to run them over. Bell and his entourage had just been implicated in a ruthless assault and were by their own words about to attempt murder.

Correction any person who brutally beats up another and then loudly claims he’s going to kill someone then has his friends go to the car to get a gun will indeed have a problem with the under cover police when they then try to run them over with the car. Had he not been guilty of assault, had his entouraged not verbally stated they intended to kill someone, had he not tried (and succeeded in the case of one officer) to run the men over, he would still be alive. Unless you’re out at strip clubs attended by gangsters beating other people and claiming you are going to go get a gun and shoot people and then running over people who identify themselves as cops black white brown or tan this situation does not apply to you.

It’s obvious the prosecution didn’t pull it together b/c I’m not understanding how they couldn’t argue and prove that 50 rounds WAS excessive force.

Hopefully they will go back and SUE in civil court and recoup damages for wrongful death, loss of consortium and emotional distress. Maybe even sue under Section or 1981 or 1983, civil rights statutes). No amount of money can bring her husband back but it damn sure will serve justice.

I am sorry I have read several different accounts of this story and do not see anywhere it state that he purposely tried to run over anyone. Yes he may have injured someone but that was because they were approaced with weapons pointed at them as well. So if you just have an argument with someone and you go to leave and you are approached with guns in your face are you not going to try to leave? brnhornet I was actually a jury foreperson for a case where the cops accused a guy of attempted MURDER for trying to run from them and in the process ALMOST hitting one of them. Needless to say the guy got off because it was obvious he was not intending to kill the cops but escape. I want to back track here. The witnesses said one thing to the grand jury and another at trial. This to me takes away their credibility. It also means that the officers can not be convicted beyond a shadow of a doubt. There is at least reasonable doubt.

Now my personal opinion of the case depends on 3 factors

1. Did they or did they not beat up this man outside the club- I believe they did judging from the fact that most agree on this portion, whether or not they were provoked is under question however they still were involved in this altercation

2. Did the officers identify themselves. Some say they did some say they didn’t- I believe they did only because the logic follows that they would. Why wouldn’t they?

3. Whether or not the car was really directed at the officers. Some say it was some say it wasnt. – There’s really no way to know this and of course if it wasn’t then the policemen would be guilty of manslaughter, however ask yourselves why the police would open fire on a car that is in no way threatening them or anyone else, and why they would randomly choose that particuliar car. Ironically, people are dehumanizing the police the same way they claim the police are dehumanizing black males.

I guess it is time for that Black Panther style of justice. Because really, Michael Vick just got two years for some damn dogs. Bell’s life vs Dog life. Black man’s life vs. Dog’s life. I guess we know where we stand.

You can not compare Amadou’s case to this one. Amadou was a single person who had not threatened anyone’s life, nor had he attended an unruly establishment, nor was he using a car as a deadly weapon. Amadou was murdered by racist policemen.

Here is the problem with this situation. The cops were undercover so it was no way tell who they are. If Sean Bell just got into an altercation with someone and next thing you know you see 3 men approaching you what’s your reaction. The cops could have been drinking-we really don’t know the story there is the cops side, Sean’s side(which we will never know), and the truth.

That’s a reservation that I do have however they reasonable doubt present would be that they got out of the car to stop it and when it kept coming forward they opened fire instead of getting out of the way because the moving car indicated an intent to kill that would have continued whether they were in front of the car or not. They saw a fight occur and instead of calling uniformed cops to handle the situation and keep their cover for some weird reason they decided to get out of the car in their plain clothes, NOT identify themselves, pull out weapons, empty a clip into an escaping car and then RELOAD and fire some more.

It appears that the officer who said he saw a gun did not actually find the gun in the car. The fact still remains that they hit one officer with the car and continued on with the car prompting the others to get out. These particuliar officers who opened fire are not the ones who called out that there was a gun in the vehicle. They were responding to an injured officer who said he needed assistance. So when they got out of the car they then told Bell to stop. Of course none of these officers were in uniform and there is a chance he didn’t believe them he also had a blood alcohol level two times above the legal limit. Again this is unfortunate but not manslaughter.

Again we have a discrepancy. Most witnesses say that the officer who approached Sean’s Altima (which was really his fiances btw) did in fact callout “Police let me see your hands” then when Shawn ran over his leg the Altima rammed into the police van where the other officers were positioned twice. They told him to stop the car. When he didn’t stop the assumed he intended to kill them this is when Detective Isnora (the detective who’d approached the car and been hit with it) yelled He’s got a gun.

Now whether or not you think Isnora’s intentions weren’t pure is beside the point. These three policemen are innocent. A car rammed into where they were standing twice and then the other officer who had been to the car said that they had a gun.

brnhornet well I am human as well..and I am Black. I have never been arrested but I still feel nervous when cops come around. I had a cookout a few years ago and they claimed the music was too loud and came to my house full of little children and a few adults with Paddy wagons and a gang of cops rushing thru my house (not my yard)! You know why? They made a mistake with my address and the address of a cookout with REAL loud music. These cops scared the children at my house and were very rude and unapologetic. When I questioned their decision and pointed out their mistake (I heard the call on their radios for the CORRECT address) they decided they wanted to give me a ticket because of their embarassment and then headed off on their merry way to shut down the party they were supposed to go to. NO APOLOGY. I fought the ticket and brought one of the children with me as a witness to the cops mistake since they wouldn’t admit their error. After my lil case was one I GOT NO APOLOGY even then.

This is no where near what happened in front of that strip club but it just goes to show that the cops have a license to be assholes and many of them take advantage of that and then wonder why so many of our people don’t trust them….and HATE them.

I would like to say that despite these three men being deemed innocent in the new york court of law. The judge, and whoever else corrupted this case all have to answer to GOD’S court of law.

They found no guns in the car however there is a dispute as to whether or not a gun was in possession after the fight with Ciocione. This is what the officers had to go off of. We also know that they claimed to have a gun.

I am going to defend something here that should not even be relevant, but let’s humor the fact that these men were doing something illegal, the punishment for a crime doesn’t = death… Due process must ensue: a charge, an indictment a trial and a decision… So even if these bastards suspected wrongdoing the idea is to apprehend your suspect with out unecessary injury, you cant just have street justice execution style.

If you all will just google. Sean Bell case. You will see some of these facts for yourself.

There was an altercation between Bell’s entourage and one man, Coicou. Guzman then said he was going to get a gun. The officers followed. Ignora appraoched the vehicle and said Police let me see your hands. Sean Belle drove forward and ran into the police van nearly hitting the plain clothes policemen and running over ignoras leg in the process, he then backed up and drove toward the policemen again nearly hitting them and hitting the van. Ignora claims he saw a gun. He yelled “he’s got a gun” the two police men then opened fire as Bell’s car was coming toward them for a third time.

This is not manslaughter.

Also the entourage was much bigger than this one car so the argument that no guns were found particuliarly since the trunk and glove compartment’s of the altima can’t be searched since it so conveniently belongs to Belle’s girlfriend (hint hint dope dealers you know what I’m talking about) is a little empty.

The judge is about to retire, almost 70 years old, and did not believe the prosecutor’s witnesses, as they seemed intimidating and did not fit his idea of a credible witness.

The defendants knew what they were doing when they opted for trial by judge, not jury, because in New York, the police are not trusted, suspected of crooked activities, and are struggling to build community relationships. This is not an environment where they felt they could get an impartial jury.

The fact the two of the cops were Black is even more disheartening, as they probably weren’t at their best that night. You know they were drinking as undercover cops and their judgement was not what it should be.

I hope they take this case federally, and at least get an investigation started. The best way to fight injustice is with intelligence, cunning, and some damn good federal legal representation.

I am so heartbroken over this. I cannot tell you how disgusted I am. At the end of the day, this “verdict” sends a chilling message to the police officers and to our community. To the policer officers, the message is the courts have your back and to the community, the message is WATCH your back. As an attorney, I am deeply sadden that I am part of a profession where “just-us” does NOT include segments of the population, namely people of color. I live across the street from the criminal courthouse in Queens and to see the media, helicopters and all of those people waiting for a verdict that would give the Bell family and this community some relief to only get a verdict of NOT guilty is appalling. It is NOT surprising that the judge is 73 years old and retiring at the end of term this summer. What does he have to lose? Off to his golfing…. I am done! Sad, but so done with expecting fairness in the justice system. The only relief that I take is that these three officers will NEVER be able to work as detectives again and will be considered pariahs in their communities, in particular the officers of color. That my friends is probably an even harsher sentence that any judge can rendered.

I have said repeatedly that this was an unfortunate situation and a tragedy, but for us to get frustrated and do something stupid (like riot: essentially burning down our own neighborhoods and thinking we’re really doing something when we’re only hurting ourselves) without having all the facts, or having a very disgruntled interpretation of the facts would be a greater tragedy.

Also you said mourn, as if he died yesterday. He died a while ago the trail was yesterday, you seem to think justice was not served, but frankly there is no one on this earth that can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that manslaughter was committed, bad judgement on both sides perhaps (in approaching the car) recklessness most definitely, but manslaughter no. Justice was served move on. There are real issues to be addressed!

As mad as i am about this situation and sad that the jury could not find these men guility it has to be said, if evidence is not properply prepared and or delievered right and witnesses are not credible you can expect this sort o thing to happen over and over again. To everyone even the jury and judge they are guilty but because you need to prove BEYOND A RESONABLE DOUBT that they were guilty, if room is left to think other wise it is then possible to find then not guilty.

Where prosecution team any good because the burden lies on them to prove guilt. Where their witnesses solid and credible because if their stories can be picked apart by the defense team again the police could be found not guilty, unfourtunatley though you could argue that come on do they need to riddle a car with 50 bullents, such force, if the defense can prove again BEYOND a REASONABLE DOUBT that such force was needed, jury then takes that into account when deciding the verdict.

I do find it a hard pill to swallow that these polices officers where not found guilty on any counts.

This truly is a sad case and i feel had the prosecution had their game tight then would have won at least got these police officers to go down for some years. What is left is to seek punitive damages and they do not have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt rather on a preponderance of evidence which just weighs the evidence and finds the party liable or not… i really wish them luck and hope they get something though money does not bring a person back they may feel like they got some justice.

After reading more into this case, Bell had a history and not a good one even so it does not give the cops the right to use as much force as they did, that kind of force should be saved for terrorist.

I don’t believe there was injustice purely because the lawyers presented a crap case expect a crap out come. The witnesses where no good so what can you expect a crap out come, had there been a better case the outcome the same then you can say its injustice.

Being the Bell was also known to the cops and was in a strip club under investigation and himself having sold drug to an under cover cop, there is bound to be a few extra’s thrown in to make Bell look worse than he already does not right but that what it is.

How come cops can apprehend KNOWN white gunmen – John Hinckley (Reagan’s shooter), Mark David Chapman (John Lennon’s assassin) and David Berkowitz (Son of Sam) – WITHOUT BLOODSHED but require multiple rounds when confronting blacks SUSPECTED of possessing firearms? Why is that? See, THIS is why the arguments of tj, jason, et al fail: You are ignoring the discrepancy in treatment that KNOWN white gunmen receive vs. the treatment administered to SUSPECTED black gunmen. That discrepancy in treatment leads to sorrowful incidents like the Sean Bell tragedy.

The judge claims he relied on current law to exonerate the cops. law that allows cops to fire on/kill innocent civilians if they believe their lives are threatened. Following the necessary emotional response to this tragedy, we need to rally our politicians – councilmembers, state and federal representatives, etc. – to change the laws that give cops unfettered freedom to decide the fate of people of color; otherwise the NEXT judge in the NEXT police brutality/unjustifiable homicide case will rely on the SAME law and hand down the SAME sentence. Do Black politicians represent their constituents or do they represent themselves? Though EVERY politician should be made accountable for the law change, Black politicians should be at the forefront of the movement.

So..the white officer is the one who shot the most times- reloading once in between shots!! And cops always have each others’ backs..redic. Apparently the white officer (Oliver) slammed a black cabbie’s head through a window and made racial comments..the city was sued in his behalf for $10,000. SUSPECT.

Not many seem to be talkabout Sean Bell and his past, that has to be questioned, he is not a squeaky clean brother just crossing the road minding his own business he was someone known to the police for shady dealings, as much as i feel sorry for the family and yes i do feel like there was some injustice, Mr Bell’s picture was not so pretty this may not have helped his case.

At the end of day the prosecution did a rubbish job and the witnesses were not credible with conflicting evidence then changing their story.
