Sean John Launches Basquiat-Themed Collection In Honor Of 20th Anniversary Of The Brand

Sean John is set to launch a capsule collection featuring the work of the late contemporary artist Jean-Michel Basquiat.

The Basquiat x Sean John collection features the art, images and name of the late New York City artist, and Sean John president Jeff Tweedy said the brand was thrilled to be able to share Basquiat’s life and art with a new generation of young fans.

“We celebrate our 20th anniversary this year – Puff and I – and we’re really excited about that and we also wanted to make sure we paid homage to the art, fashion and entertainment world that we embrace,” Tweedy told BOSSIP at the clothing launch Thursday at the Agora Art Gallery in NYC. “We wanted to figure out how to bring what he did to a new audience, who might not know who he is, and how talented he was.”

Priced from $45 to $135, the collection includes graphic tees with with Basquiat’s signature crown, a jean jacket splattered with white paint with Basquiat’s dinosaur on the back, white jeans with Basquiat’s art peeking through the rips and a standout color blocked sweater, also with the Basquiat dinosaur.

“We wanted to focus on bringing the art to life,” Tweedy said. “You have jeans that have the graphics and art incorporated into it. You have the crown, which was his symbol, what he was known for, and the dinosaur, which is wonderful.”

The artist, who is still hailed for using his artwork as a way to comment on life in the late 70s and early 80s, died of a drug overdose in 1988. He was 27 years old.

The launch brought out the likes of Jahvaris Martin – Trayvon Martin’s brother – celebrity stylist June Ambrose and Essence Magazine editor Mikki Taylor.
