I think we have some weak areas to address as a people. However being under attack after attack I know we are growing tired busy surviving…not everyone can contribute like they want to.

My point exactly. Back in the day, we recycled resources back in2 our OWN community, thus we may not have had civil rights worth a damn, we OWNED our own s**t.

Here’s a breakdown:

Black person patronizes an Asian owned/run business in the neighborhood.

Asian business owner takes profits from customers and goes back 2 his neighborhood and deposits the money in2 their own bank.

This further enables the bank greater lending power for homes, businesses, etc. BTW, who r the regular patrons of these banks? Exactly.

This in turn, increases the instances of Asian-owned businessess, properties, etc.

Thus, another business opens in the hood. Asians get richer, black people get “goods and services rendered.”

Now, y’all even so much as TRY 2 buy property in Little Tokyo and c what happens.

So my question to you is a lot of people especially here in Houston are just exhausted…we got New Orleans descendants who had to relocate their whole legacy and families…we had Hurricane Ike to come thru pretty rugged, we had quite a few jobs go under after the hurricane due to insurance flaws and damage costs in addition to the economy failure for other businesses…so how do you motivate a group of people who have been thru more than anybody else on the planet?

Do you encourage them by pointing out the flaws because obviously we…and I include myself…are not enthusiastic enough to start a revolution while the focus is on what we do wrong…I feel more encouraged when you tell me what we do right.

Your point is very true about the starry-eyed American dream applying 2 all but us, has historically put us at a disadvantage.

Considering your example of the hurricane aftermath, it certainly illustrates the disparities between the haves and the have nots. Yet, I also consider, 4 example, the Asian communites also caught in the disaster, and how they were far better off recovering than the black community is.
These r good questions, and I truly wish I had all the answers. I don’t think this is something that we can fix in a generation, as it took us a few 2 get where we’re at.

I will acknowlege the good, however: We’re a resilient people who have survived worse.

Crenshaw district is slowly becoming multi-ethnic, due to the depressed economy. I have a friend who resides in the gated community, The Gloria Homes Apts., and according to her, it’s now 20% white. To my knowledge, Roscoes is still black owned and ran. Btw, the Crenshaw District is being overran by Korean & Latino owned business establishments. In fact, a Latino owned Louisiana Fried Chicken stand was opened on MLK Blvd and Coloseum about a year ago.

I don’t feel like being too deep today but I will say this.

As a note to black people:
Bossip and other sites help to split us farther apart. Bossip is owned by a cooperation. Bossip, Lossip, F-listed, etc are all under the same white company. Thus when you see a post title “Coon of the Day” please stop and think who thought of that title? Who put it on the website? Chances are it was a white person.

With that being said, I saw a remark on here about how pre civil rights black people and businesses were all doing well for themselves and the author wrote about this supposed “black love.”

First, as a history lesson (I have two degrees in with one being in History, currently working on my JD) black men started to disrespect women soon after slavery (and when I say soon I mean historically soon as in 15-30 years after). Bc black me were Emasculate by the white man they in turn learned how to disrespect or Emasculate black women. Even during the civil rights movement they did it and the black panther movement as well.

Thus the thought today should be how can the black man stop this ill formed habit in it’s tracks and learn that the disrespect they show their women is the same disrespect m*****a taught them.

Yeah, it’s just a matter of time before the Latinos take over Los Angeles and the surrounding areas.

I thought they all ready have. I’m surprised L.A. isn’t the “new Mexico” by now.

They’ve am*****ed a strong economic base and a lot of political pull, due to power in numbers.

This is what we should’ve done! Not only in L.A., but every city, USA. I’m telling you, the same has happened her in my hometown. Black business were once bustling. Now when I drive by my old hood, I can’t do anything but SMH. The few blacks here have moved to the suburbs like they’ve done down there in L.A. I wish we knew how to come together like other races, support one another, and get our economic base up. Blacks tend to be major consumers, especially in hair care yet we don’t own any beauty supplie shops. That’s what happened here. The black beauty supply shops have closed only to have two large Korean shops open up. They are extremely rude, yet black people pour in there like no tomorrow making those Asians rich.

I think the only thing that’s slowing down their inevitable ascension is the depressed economy, but once the economy stabilizes itself, blacks will be in for a rude awakening in the guise of racial redevelopment.

i.e. gentrification.

Those who can afford to move to the westside or the valley will survive, but those who can’t will either have to migrate to the South or move to Palmdale (the new Compton).

Wow! I shudder at the thought! This is not the L.A. I knew and loved. Yeah, my sister refuses to move back there. My brother lives in Newport Beach, and he said it’s getting bad in some parts there as well. I was shocked because I always thought NPB was upper crust. BTW, I hear Pasadena is nice.

The way I see it there are excuses in 2009. The point Tilla brings up about third world countries is very valid. Look at the statistics of India and China- If you think you have it bad wit until these two ountries are fully up and running as SUPER powers like they are forcasted to be and are.

There are people who have gone through immense suffering and still are. People who have less rights, and less opportunities than most of the poorest in America and ever so often there are those make it that situation. What does that tell you about your conditions and state you are in.

I think more people need to start being individuals and really looking at themselves, their goals, their possibilities, their future, their past. I do not see how as a black woman I need to be labelled and lumped into boxes about who I can date, how I must talk, or how I must conduct myself based on a “black culture” that other blacks have built as a self fulfilling prophecy for the whole of the community.

Start looking at people as their own. Any race. You can’t get offended, at the end of the day we’re all humans and the social rules apply to everyone.. unless you’re uber rich.. then you play another game but I’m sure you learned all of this is Sociology cl*****..

More people should take that cl***** IMO.

This is a true story — I have a friend who lives in a condo community, and she used to have a neighbor (a brother) whose girlfriend was white (my friend saw him bring her home inebriated one evening and from then on, she frequently saw the two of them together).

Well, one Saturday, she was at home and on the phone when she heard a loud commotion outside in the outdoor area in the middle of the complex, in full view of her neighbors. The two of them apparently had an argument, and the woman was screaming for someone to call 911 because he was “stealing” her things. The yells were so loud that my friend’s mother could hear them on the other line.

Now my friend’s neighbors are very laidback, and I guess people knew it was a couple’s quarrel, but what struck both of us is that this woman — in the throes of emotion — knew that she could accuse this professional, successful black man of a crime and possibly have him arrested.

And, after all that, he continued to date her.

So, yes, indeed, a woman (or man, for that matter) may be involved in a relationship with a person of another race and still hold certain prejudices. Just because he/she is sleeping with you, doesn’t mean that he/she doesn’t see race and holds perceptions that are based upon racial differences.
