BOSSIP chopped it up with Nia Long the other day to talk about why she wanted to be apart of Chris Rock’s Project Good Hair, her thoughts about hair in the black community and who she’s letting run their hands up through her tracks. We also asked her about that PETA ad she did where she was FULL MONTY!!!

BOSSIP: How do you feel about black hair and the women in the black community?
Nia Long: Black hair is a major issue in our community. It is a topic and it is a challenge we have, you know, in terms of hair style choices. Black women can do just about any and everything with their hair so it’s relevant and I think we have to really take a look at why we choose certain hairstyles and are we in tune enough with our history to understand and embrace our past and to know if we really choose to have a hair weave because it is a beauty choice, rather than some sort of self denial. Can we still feel as beautiful with our hair in its natural most organic state.
BOSSIP: What is your definition of “GOOD HAIR”???
Nia Long: Healthy hair is good hair. And if you need to go buy some extra hair, it’s all good. Good hair is really, when you look in the mirror and you go “Oh my goodness!! My hair is just having a good hair day today.” That’s good hair.
BOSSIP: What made you want to be apart of this project when Chris Rock approached you?
Nia Long: I think Chris is funny and smart and hair is something that we have not discussed in a contemporary way in a long time. You know, there are many documentaries that deal with the history of black people and black beauty and that sort of encompasses hair, but to do it with a comedic tone, I think it’s much easier to get the message and get some of the more deeper points that Chris is making. When you laugh you’re much more open than when you’re serious and militant.
BOSSIP: Black men actually get a chance to understand what black women are going through when it’s time to get “the wig did.”
Nia Long: Men wonder but men will kind of be like whatever, “I’m not even gonna go there, that’s her business.” It’s great that we can actually talk about these things and we don’t have to feel ashamed because we are choosing to wear a weave, cause we just feel like wearing a weave.
BOSSIP: Let me ask you this, how much time do you dedicate to your hair every day???
Nia Long: Oh my gosh, every day. If I don’t have anything going on, honestly 10 minutes. I mean those are the days I would not be caught dead being photographed cause Bossip would have me all out there. I mean, I’m doing this interview in hopes to make peace with ya’ll so ya’ll just say from now on we only give Nia Long nothing but love and every picture I see of myself on Bossip is fabulous. And if it’s not I’m calling you back [laughing].
BOSSIP: When you wear a weave, on the days you are just running out of the house, did you have pieces or did you just have a wig that you threw on???
Nia Long: I had pieces in, maybe four or five tracks in my own hair. They were sewn, but what I would just do is I would always do the hair that was wash and wear so on the days when I didn’t have anything for work, I would just wear it curly and walk out the door or throw a scarf on or throw a hat on. I’m not that woman that has to walk out the house every day looking perfect, I’m so not her. I don’t care that much about my looks, I think when I hit the red carpet there’s pressure to look a certain way, but I don’t get caught up in vanity that way. I think my pressure comes more from what the fans expect of me than how much I really place value on my looks.
BOSSIP: Now that you said the red carpet, just this week, you were in LA with long hair and then we saw you in NY and you busted out the short “DO.”
Nia Long: It’s funny because the other night I didn’t totally finish my hair cut and so I had to cut it again today so I have a feeling that by Friday I might be super duper short, I keep cutting it.
BOSSIP: So are you going back to that old school, sexy short cut that you used to wear???
Nia Long: Five people have said that and maybe it’s a little bit of a throwback, but it’s not even really that deep. I switch it up, ok time for short again. Sometimes you just have to switch it up. But it’s so easy to get caught up wearing a weave because of the convenience, you can go work out, when I wore my weave, it was like work out, got a meeting, then the next day do five different things and not have to worry about my hair. For me, my hair is an accessory it is a fashion choice, I think weaves are trendy right now. I think when you look at images in videos and you look at the images that are being celebrated as beautiful, there are far few women of color being represented. So when you say to yourself why am I wearing a weave? The question is are you wearing a weave because you’re ashamed of what your natural hair looks like or are you wearing it because this is, your fashion choice, this is your beauty choice. If you want to look at it on a deeper level, you can start there.
BOSSIP: Does weave or your real hair make you feel more diva-ish at times or do you just feel like laid back Nia at all times regardless of how you wear you hair?
Nia Long: Um, you know I’ve only had my short hair for 48 hours… the verdict is still out on that one. I tell you one thing, I slept well last night and I guess my head is lighter and you know, I feel free. Chris Rock said to me, now we can appreciate your unique beauty, you don’t look like everyone else. That’s what the man said.
BOSSIP: What’s the most amount of money you have paid for a weave???
Nia Long: Probably like $700 dollars, Weaves are not that expensive in LA and a lot of times the studio will take care of the cost of the hair.
BOSSIP: Cause we hear about people like Beyonce doing like 20,000 weaves and I’m like where is she going? Why is she paying $20,000 for a weave???
Nia Long: You can’t believe what people say, I mean, I know Kim Kimble who did my hair in Big Momma’s House at the very beginning. She’s become like a huge hair stylist to the stars and I know Kim Kimble does not charge $20,000 dollars for no weave, I don’t care who you are. She’s not gonna do that.
BOSSIP: So when you did have a weave, everybody likes to say, “I don’t let my man touch my weave, you can’t touch my weave,” are you like that???
Nia Long: No, not really. No I mean I was like I’m wearing a weave and I’m proud of it, if you want to touch it that’s on you.
BOSSIP: So, what about, say you guys are getting in the moment and getting in the mood and he just wants to put his hands all up through your tracks. You’ll let him do that??? [laughing]
Nia Long: [laughing] He has to be weave worthy honey. If he’s weave worthy than it’s on, if he’s not weave worthy then keep your hands in your pockets.
BOSSIP: So who is weave worthy???
Nia Long: That’s my personal… you think I’m gonna tell Bossip all my business come on now.
BOSSIP: Right now at the moment is there somebody, not even weave worthy, but real hair hands worthy to get up in the tresses.
Nia Long: I am not telling you guys my personal business ya’ll will be outside my house spying on me. [laughing]
BOSSIP: Now, you know we don’t spy on people… you know who does, they all up in your personal business.
Nia Long: Yeah but you guys will grab footage from them and I’ll still be on there. You not cracking that nut today. I love you guys but I’m not going there. [laughing]
BOSSIP: We normally say nothing but positive things, it’s very rare we call you out on things.
Nia Long: Uh Uh… This is like you guys’ new thing if somebody gains five pounds ya’ll are like she’s got a GUT FULL OF HUMAN.
BOSSIP: Ohhhh yeah [laughing], One of the writers just pulled up the post “Gut Full of Human,” that was the weekend you were in Atlanta at the Bronner Brothers Show and you were also spotted out with Johnta Austin.
Nia Long: I wasn’t out with Johnta, he’s a friend of mine but we were not out. He’s a good guy, a really good guy but we’ve never dated. We’re just friends. You guys would never know, I’m not gonna tell you, so don’t be trying to squeeze it out of me at the last minute. [laughing]
BOSSIP: What we ask is that when you are ready to debut the your love interest, just tell us first and how about this, when we hear something crazy about Ms. Nia Long, we’ll call you???
Nia Long: I will as long as you guys are nice to me the rest of my life, I don’t want no nonsense on there about my life.
BOSSIP: Glad to hear you read Bossip.com.
Nia Long: I read the blogs. Sometimes I’m like oh my goodness, people really can let their opinions be known. At the drop of a hat. It’s kind of like you have to be really careful about what you do and say and everyone has an opinion. But you know I from time to time read Bossip and you know sometimes I think you guys cross the line, but I get it, it’s a part of the media. There’s a high demand. I guess the reason why I feel like sometimes you cross the line is only because I know how much I value my privacy. But, you know, I think in terms of the world of reality TV that we live in, I think it’s brilliant, not brilliant that’s the wrong adjective. I think it’s relevant, I think Bossip is a really important site for a lot of people.
BOSSIP: What do you think about the comments from other readers, cause they can get down and dirty at times???
Nia Long: Oh, the comments crack me up. The comments crack me up because you really do get an idea of what the general public thinks about you. And I have to say I get so much love from the guys and the girls and I appreciate that.
BOSSIP: We have one more question. When you did your PETA ad everybody said you looked flawless. So we want to know, was the body banging like that for real or is it all just photoshop???
Nia Long: Well, the body was banging like that for real a year and a half ago when I took the picture. The body today is not quite as thin but I will say this, the photo shop work that was done on the photo and it’s something that I went back and forth with him a lot, and you got to understand something, in terms of my skin being flawless like that, that is me. I don’t have marks, I don’t have stretch marks, I don’t have anything but you have to understand, I was not naked on a subway taking that photo. So you have to superimpose the body into the background and that’s a big process. In that process you’re going to lose some of the integrity of the photo. Would I agree with most people that it was over-touched, I have to say yes but did they make me super skinny and change my body,NO…They did not. For all the haters out there that tried to say it was not me, and I say that with lots of love and a smile… IT IS WHAT IT IS!!!

The interview has a candid feel to it. She really seems so light-hearted like in a lot of her movies. I’m not sure why she’d want to play a dark role. We love her happy, cheerful BEAUTIFUL and just Nia!! My neice is named after her.
Good Hair.. the movie is one thing I think it’s a wakeup call to leave all that fake mess alone or dont’ go over board with it like Beyonce. That is her STAGE hair. Nia on the other hand does rock her own hair and weaves, this I love because it shows she’s confident as a black woman with non-whtie hair.
I want her to lose a lil more weight. not because she’s not beauituful already and petite.. but because she has been here so long, a pillar of everything decent and beautiful and Taraji, Queen latifah, Regina King and Halle Berry have gotten the spotlight she should have gotten already.
I need her to come out looking like she could melt butter, just for the next year or two, she never gains momentum she needs to become a huge star and look at her she still looks 16. SMH she’s so fly too and what a personality.. I love this woman.

Naw, she’s overrated. She always played the “cute available girl.” From Boyz-N-the-Hood to Friday to Love Jones. She’s the “cute love interest.” She’s not that good of an actress and that’s why she doesn’t do as well in any role of substance.
She has primarily made it on her looks and those are beginning to fail her. I wish her luck.

It really makes me feel bad that her, or any other celebrity like Kandi (RHOA), takes anything they read on a blog personal. At the end of the day- F the blogs. I mean, its cool, as a means to keep some celebs in check so their heads don’t get too big. But that’s it. Really most (not all) bloggers would trade their life for a (good) celebrity’s at the drop of a dime. So why would a celebrity (at the top of their game) be so caught up in a bloggers opinion that it makes them change their own perspective of themselves? Or make them want to act, speak, or dress differently. It’s a little amazing to me that bloggers would put that much pressure on someone? I understand some are fans- but some are just EXTREME haters. Don’t take the seriously harsh comments so seriously…

How is Nia overrated when there is NO talk about how great of an actress she is, she doesn’t get a lot of work…so I don’t get the overrated part. She is talked about once in a blue moon. Were only hearing about her now because she is promoting a movie. If anything is overrated is how people throw the word “overrated” around. Like someone else said, if anything she needs more work!

I agree with Ralph/Lauren apart from the Oprah part. I love ”O”. Indians, Persians and Chinese do not expose their traditions and culture for money. Black men have a fasination about long, flowing hair…I blame the media for this. Then if you hear some soul or R&B tunes, the men talks about putting his fingers through his woman’s long flowing hair…so, what can u do but make effort on your hair and be the sexiest chick u can be. Nia Long has a job as an actress that she earns a paycheck for JUST LIKE YOU DO..how bout we decide that “you” are just the average everyday worker bee who can only entertain themselves by criticizing others.

I’ve loved you since Boys in the Hood! I was so impressed that your character was real. I’ve watched every movie that you have been in ever since. Few people realize how groundbreaking your role in Boiler Room. That role you played would normally go to a latina or white woman. You rocked it and proved that black women do not have to always be the sidekick to the black guy in the movie. Halle Berry should be kissing your ***** for that role because it opened a lot of doors for mixed race couples that are not in the movie where the story line is that they are a mixed race couple.
And you are so beautiful! And you are one of the few celebrities that do not pimp out your child for press. You and Johnny Depp are the only two I can think of right now.

She is a beautiful woman who is growing old gracefully. She doesn’t look worn and haggard like she’s lived a rough life. People kill me criticizing her weight gain and her age – I mean REALLY? What is she supposed to do? Starve herself and get botox and plastic surgery like a lot of these white actresses to try to keep father time at bay?
