With so many people outraged about Nikole Churchill being crowned Ms. Hampton University, is it really right for people to be mad that she is not African-American and carrying this title???

Almost twenty years, for six years straight, UNC Chapel Hill (predominantly white university) had six different African-American women carrying the title of homecoming queen. These women went through the same thing that Nikole is going through now. The students at UNC would call the queens racial slurs, slash tires and more and this was all because the students didn’t feel that those women represented what their school stood for even though they were students just like everyone else.

So with that being said… is it okay for people to be upset about Nikole not being black and carrying the title of Ms. Hampton University and also representing the school in the Ms. Virginia Pageant???

***Click on the Images Below for the article from Jet Magazine about the 6 Black Homecoming Queens***

  • shut your bloodclot crying, the kid ,the dog ,everybody ‘s dyin, no lyin’

It was probably done on purpose for publicity.

  • The fwesh pwince™

Is it wrong? No. But, I don’t think it’s about race.

  • copycat

I plead the 5th…y’all on some old bullshit.

  • aleximaq

She only goes there because 1. she thinks shes screwed enough Negros to count as being Black and 2. Her tuition is paid up because she is a “minority”…..SMH

  • Rihanna’s sharp n pointy witchy fingernails took the oath

when there’s a first black this or that, it’s okay…? we are a humble people. let that girl be the first white whatever…

  • E$

She good enough to go to school there, she can win a Pageant. Black folkz being racist is not a good look

  • http://n/a Yeah it’s me!

AL Sharpten will you please get on this??? Folks give it a minute our speaker AL will take care of this!!!!!!!!!!

  • Rod

If the person that wins meets whatever standards are placed then there should be no problem at all. She is a student there just like everyone else so why not. And with her going to a black school they can not say she won with the white vote. So if enough of the students that voted thought it was ok then so be it. I bet the only ones that did not like it are the people that she beat and the ones that did not vote for her.

  • MrTavMarie

She doesn’t enough ass. If it was a Kim Kardashian type, they’d let this sh*t slide by…

  • Fk

i can’t see where they coming from but then again it’s 2009 and now we have a black president in the white house. things are changing hopefully for the best!!

  • Nique

From my understanding she doesnt even go to the main campus-so therefore she doesnt represent them.

  • MAINE

Who gives a f*** why does everone try to make a issues about race all the time. If she won then she won.

  • jay

Nikole Churchill won and that should be it if this was the other way around everyone would say thats racist.

  • Screwston, TX

No I don’t think it’s wrong. Would it be wrong for a black female to be crowned at an historically white university?

  • dumbish

    1) Its a historically black college
    2) The students didn’t vote on this
    3) Why did they have judges that may have not attended the school?
With these factors i can understand the students feelings about this girl. Now Hampton being what it is used to only allow Black people in who were no darker than a paper bag so the older people that went their have a eurocentric view point on beauty. They may want to consider allowing the student government start voting on the judges of these compititions so no one can complain. This goes for all schools. The students clearly did not have a voice on this and that is where their outrage comes from.

  • Plagueis The Wise

If she won, she won. If the shoe was on the other foot and white people were mad about a black girl winning a pageant, everyone would be screaming racism. Those things are won by vote, obviously her peers think she was the woman for the position.

  • Cool Breeze

If she was qualified and approved by the panel then what the hell. Just because it’s a HBCU doesn’t mean a white person can’t win anything. What yall want? If we can have them on our sports team and we win a championship, we hve to give it back cause we had white people on the team. Come on people, Dr. King said we should be fair to all-not just blacks.

    “I Keeps It Real”

  • drenk

she was good enough to have her money taken by the school shes good enough to win the title and represent the school

  • AreYouSerious?

Ummm how many BLACK SISTERS DO YOU SEE WIN A DAMN AMERICAN BEAUTY PAGEANT>?????
my point exactly….a sister should have MOST certainly won that.

  • MANMISSMEWITHTHATBULLCRAP

WHO CARES? CAN A BLACK WOMAN BE MISS AMERICA? IT’S A PRE-DOMINANTLY WHITE NATION.

  • Infinit45 (I love a women in heels)

Congratulations on Nikole. I’m sure all the judges were black. I’m also sure they took into consideration if she won there would be controversy. It’s apparent they made their choice based on her meeting/exceding the requirements and not based on race or what people would say.

Oh, and she’s probably more black than many of them with the name “Nikole”…hahaha!

  • Plain Jane

We can’t have it both ways black people!! If we want to be treated equally, then we have to do the same for other people. Earlier this year at Kentucky State University (an HBCU), a white student won homecoming queen or Miss KSU (can’t remember which) and it was the same situation, where black students felt she shouldn’t have won because of her color. To me, it makes us look very bad because we want justice for discrimination against us, but we do the same to other races. How do we justify that??

  • bobby

IMHO,I don’t even know if HBCU’s are necessary anymore. I totally understand their necessity in the days of Jim Crow and segregation because black students were simply not allowed to attend other schools. But in 2009, with a black man in the White House, do HBCU’s still serve a purpose?

  • drenk

also the one in pink is the best looking one there, howd she get passed up

  • AreYouSerious?

WHO CARES? CAN A BLACK WOMAN BE MISS AMERICA? IT’S A PRE-DOMINANTLY WHITE NATION.
    ____________________________

HELL NAW!!! THAT IS WHY THE BLACK SISTER SHOULD HAVE WON THAT AUTOMATICALLY…BECAUSE THE PRETTIEST SISTER CAN ENTER THE MISS AMERICA PAGEANT AND STILL LOSE FOR THE SIMPLE FACT THAT SHE AINT WHITE.

  • Lady D

Our people can sometimes be so damn petty… We can have a first black president, a first black anything, but not a first white winner of anything?? Grow up. I say if she deserved it, leave her alone. Quit being so petty. This reminds me of when black folk got in an uproar about hurricanes not having ethnic enough names. Then came Katrina… Chill out.

  • TM30

Imo, it’s a bit hypocritical, if you are hung up on race. Either you want it all the way around or you don’t want it at all. There can’t be double standards. Now with that said, I think most people are upset because she doesn’t embody the culture of the “main” campus. And for her to be white just took it to another extreme. If she had been active and popular on the campus, this may not have been as big of an issue…at least I hope it wouldn’t have. Then again if she had the same qualification and been black would there have been such outrage? There have been a few white student who have achieve great feats at HBCUs with hardly any outrage because they immersed themselves in the campus atmosphere and from what I’m reading this may not have been the case.

  • Excuse Me

No, it is not wrong that she won the honor. What is wrong is that people admiring the victory of the first African American president in the U.S. are too simplistic & short-sighted to apply to same attitude to a SIMILAR case of odds in a diff. context. It’s a beautiful thing when diversity stands out.

Who cares what happened at UNC, is that NOT the perfect reason to spew love & support? I believe we’re missing the crucial lesson of diverting hate to love. Instead, we choose to do unto others what has been done to us. < That's not living, or allowing others to live.

  • Monica

Why r ppl still talking abt this?!? The students are not mad bc she’s not black, they feel tht she’s gonna have a hard time bc nobody knows her. She’s a transfer who goes 2 the satellite campus. She’ll never get a chance to interact w/them. And I think they were mad at the fact tht she wrote a letter to the President about the situation bc it brought bad publicity to the school. But personally I dnt see anything wrong with her being Miss Hampton just because she is not white. Race should not matter. if she’s good enough to be a student thn why is she not good enough to be Miss Hampton. I am so sick of ppl making everything about race!

  • Red

    @ excuse me
    Exactly!!!
It’s about time we show folks we are not like them. Because they hated, we don’t have to perpetuate the hate.
As for Beauty pageants, haven’t there been a number of Black Ms Americas, going as far back as Vanessa Williams? The first Black Ms Universe was over 30 years ago.
Wake up folk, that young lady is getting an education at a legitimate University. Hopefully, the next person that interviews with a Fortune 500 company from Hampton won’t feel the wrath of this blatant “reverse racism”.

  • http://urbanfrugalchic.com Cynthia

Yes it is not Right in my opinion..as a girl who was born in Hampton Va..this upsets me.

  • http://urbanfrugalchic.com Khristal

    WTF?

  • drenk

    @ Big titi white girl

    hey hannibal whats up

  • Excuse Me

Cynthia, if you don’t mind could you explain why it upsets you? I just want to understand…

  • rhibrwn

It has nothing to do with her race. This chick doesnt even attend the main campus, the student didn’t vote for her. Such a shame

  • geefunk227

Is this Ms.hampton or Ms. African America? The girl loves black people. She loves the culture and people and you hate her for that.Black people take being black lightly. Here is a girl who probably dreamed of being black worked on it and her dream was realized for a day.Imagine what white people or her family said once she said what College she wanted to go to.You have Sistas cutting off their breasts;perming their hair;bleaching their skin and your mad that a white women celebrates what you are ashamed of.Grow up cry babies.People act like they don’t want to be black but their are alot of braids, rappers, corporations catering to the culture.Spanish speaking people don’t want to be called black.Look at their so called culture and what they celebrate.Salsa is jazz with Adobo in it.Reggaetone is a Reggae beat with a terrible rapper. The male words all end in the “o” sound and the females sounds end in “a”.How hard would it be to make a song like that?Things like being called African American are a joke. Was your Mothers legs spread between Miami and the Algeria. Its impossible to be from to continents. You want to know about Africa you study the past ,present, politics, history, culture etc.. Don’t label yourself to make it seem like you are proud or you have African knowledge. Most Black people are their own problem. We don’t love ourselves as much as other people who celebrate our culture talents and struggle. We think geography makes us so different.Divide and conquer is the game and we continue to get played.

  • Royal Chocolate

No, it’s all about “school spirit”!

  • Elana

Do they serve a purpose in 2009? Of course, they serve a purpose. HBCUs for your information are still educating students.

  • Kimbo

if it was a black girl winning something a predomantly white school i would hate to think this would happen!!!

@ drenk b t white girl smells like hannibal for real.

  • kerry

    @are you serious
Black women have been crowned Miss America on numerous occasions. I don’t see what the big deal is.

  • Never Take S!des

We all know Blacks are not racist, we just dont like racist people trying to bring us down. So lets not even stoop down to that level.

  • Never Take S!des

We The girl Is paying to go to school there, she had hella support getting her to that point, so she must be a cool person, her color is not a factor.

  • Never Take S!des

  • Samantha

Not is she attends the school.

  • jrod

true that. if her money is good enough for the school, she should be good enough to win a pageant.

  • Samantha

Not is she attends the school. You’ll need to let this story go.

  • CoCo

It is a HISTORICALLY black university for a reason. Times have changed and it’s ridiculous that people say she doesn’t deserve the title. If the roles were reversed we’d have Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson holding a press conference on the school’s steps as we speak. well… er… type.

  • 1985

She’s a student at the school so she should be able to win the crown.

  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5M7m_EccTEQ&feature=related I’m Just Me: Keeping It Real Since 1983

I said no last time and I will say it again. If she was accepted at the school, if her tuition is accepted, then I don’t see why you cannot fully participate in the school’s activities and win.

  • PUSSYCATFUN

    @DRENK…IMMA STAB YOU FOR THAT!

    ROTFLMFBAO!

    HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

    THAT WAS FUNNY.

@ aleximaq…..HOW WOULD U KNOW THE REASONS SHE IS REALLY THERE….PEOPLE LIKE YOU ARE SO NEGATIVE FOR NO REASON….PEOPLE THIS GIRL HAS DONE NOTHING TO ANY OF YALL AND YALL BASHING HER …BUT IF IT WAS THE OTHER WAY AROUND PEOPLE WOULD BE BE SCREAMING RACISM THATS EXACTLY WHY OUR CULTURE ALWAYS HAVING ISSUES…GROW UP PEOPLE

  • asds

i dont think there is any issue. however, I think the voting should be done by student body. not some panel of nobodies.

  • http://www.oakwood.edu Stanley

There are black racist and white racist..These just happen to be black racist..If the girl is a student there then she has the right to compete and if she wins so be it..BLACK RACISTS! Just as sick as white racist..DOn’t think I am white..I am as black as they come..I am just telling the truth! The good book says that the truth will make us free..we ain’t free yet because we don’t want to own up to the truth

  • tg

No – because if you promote racism – then you can’t be against racism. If she attends the school – she should be illegible. We have to get over the color of one’s skin. We can’t fight racism against white people = if we promote racism towards white people. It doesn’t work that way.

  • fatal

Some of y’all seem to think that just because that we now have a black president, all the issues with race will just disappered overnight. This situation cleary shows that. It is going to to take a long time for america end its issues with race, if it ever happens.

  • Beauty-fulTxn

If she attends the school, then ther is nothing wrong with it. People need to get over this cause it is not a big deal at all.

  • jrod

    @fatal
True but it has to start somewhere and perpetuating it with taking issue with TINY things like a beauty pageant is not going to expedite the process. Winning the presidency is HUGE, so small things like this need to disappear and I don’t see why it shouldn’t be “overnight”.

  • LeeLee

First off, I graduated from Hampton and nobody seems to think that this is a big deal (among the alumni). She probably “heard” that several individuals were upset and she reacted by sending a letter to the President. I can understand her frustration but she had to know that this would generate some controversy. Making the entire student body look like they can’t accept diversity is wrong on so many levels.

  • http://www.myspace.com/ocky_j Octavia

    Who cares? Congrats to her.

  • http://twitter.com/mastermk7 MasterMK

Nikole deserves to be queen no matter on what race she is… people who disagree based on her skin color are just a racist.

  • Roe

She tripped sending a letter to the president and thats the only reason why people are making a big deal out of it. She obviously wants this attention because that letter to the president is going to far like he has time to deal with her being hated on. LOL! dumb broad should have just gave back the crown. she knew what would happen if she won she had to be experiencing the hate from the start of the pageant.

  • dcgal

She looks like Olive Oyl from the popeye cartoon

  • Okayyyy!!!!

If she’s a student at the school she’s entitled to the crown…

  • HUMPH

Well it depends, the Queen is supposed to be a representation of the school. Are her closest friends Black, does she know enough about black history, these things need to be taken in consideration b4 she can truly be crowned, if she’s able to prove her understanding of the black community, why not, if not, then she does not deserve that crown

  • Choco

Please people who thinks it’s wrong get over it…put the shoe on the other foot would it still be wrong then…Hell no it ain’t wrong she was chosen by black students…Geez Louise!

  • trexfrombollywood

THE GIRL DIDNT VOTE FOR HER MUTHAFUKIN SELF DID SHE. IM SURE HER GRADES ARE GOOD, TUITION IS PAID ON TIME AND SHE WAS GOOD ON THE EYES. THATS REPRESENTING ENOUGH…I’LL BE IN VA NEXT MONTH. IMMA LOOK HER UP AND SEE CAN I GET SOME ACTION!!!

  • Jay the Real One

    @Choco

Please people who thinks it’s wrong get over it…put the shoe on the other foot would it still be wrong then…Hell no it ain’t wrong she was chosen by black students…Geez Louise!

    —————————————————

wrong d, she was chosen by a board of four people from the Miss USA contest. The students are mad they didn’t get a say not her race.

  • imrightdammit

If you feel a Black woman can win the crown at a “Historically White College”, then a White woman should be able to win at a Black college. Fairness goes both ways people!

  • Kym

Why is it ALWAYS about color? For realz! If she deserved it, good for her!!!

  • I’m just sayin….

So if I were a student at, lets say Harvard (a historically/ predominantly WHITE university) are you saying I don’t deserve to be crowned Queen because I’m black??? Personally I don’t like seeing a white woman crowned queen of a black college, but regardless of race, as a student she is entitled to run for the crown and win.

  • Jay the Real One

    ATTENTION MISINFORMED BLACK FOLK:

THIS GIRL WAS NOT VOTED FOR BY THE STUDENTS, A FOUR PERSON BOARD IN CONNECTION TO THE MISS AMERICA CONTEST PICKED HER. THERE HAVE BEEN NONBLACK QUEENS BEFORE THE ISSUE IS THIS WAS OUTSIDE POLITICS.

  • Jay the Real One

IT STUNS ME HOW UNIFORMED BLACK FOLKS CAN BE, ALL OPINION AND DON’T KNOW SHIT

  • da4seentruth

LOL people need to calm down. Most likely blacks guys voted her in. People need to not forget blacks guy LOVE white women. Anybody man who says different is a LIAR.

  • Please Stop

PLEASE CORRECT THIS STORY!!! THE STUDENTS DID NOT VOTE FOR THIS QUEEN. THE JUDGES DO NOT ATTEND THE SCHOOL.

  • wouldn’t you like to know

WHY BE MAD, IF SHE WENT TO SCHOOL THERE IT DOESN’T MATTER. WHY ARE PEOPLE SO STUCK ON BLACK AND WHITE.

  • Bossip Baby

    @Please Stop…

We never said the students voted for her… What are you reading

  • Patricie

I went to Hampton and I think it’s cool. what if a black girl was miss Harvard? Damn, she’s a student and who cares what her motives were, she clearly was qualified. how would ya’ll feel if you accomplished a great milestone and all people could see was your color. It does not say in the rule books that no white people could run and also people had to vote for her. and the contest was started 15 years ago, not 100 years ago when Hampton was founded. Oh and Hampton was founded by a WHITE man. It seems like it’s not white people that are racist, but it’s blacks that try to hold on to this notion of what’s ours is ours and what’s yours should be ours too. Notice there are no signs in the front of USC saying no negros allowed.Hampton has always had white people that went there, she’s just the first to run and that took a lot. She is courageous and she should be applauded. So leave her alone and get a life!!!

  • Lolah

im really not seeing what the bid deal is cuz clearly enough ppl liked the girl to vote for her, its probly jus some closed minded salty as hell chicks creating drama

  • Unkle Ruckus

The keyword is Historically, not Mandatory. The AA girls should have stepped their pageant game up if they didn’t want Becky to rep for the University.

  • Bossip Baby

    @Kenya Dig It?

I completely understand everything that you said and thank u for bringing up everything that you said. but the reason that we ask the question that we did is because it seems that people are really having an issue with Nikole not being black and we want to know exactly how people felt when it comes to a situation like this. If Nikole did attend the main campus and was still chosen by the board that voted… would people still feel the same way about her winning. We know that the students at Hampton have their reason for not wanting her to be queen but others that are not students there have their own reason and for some people, it is the color of her skin that is the issue.

  • chzz

I don’t read “black” anywhere in the title so what’s the big deal?
    Get off the girl’s back.

  • http://www.myspace.com/sexysince1982 MeSexyMe

  • Sydney™ (. . .the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die)

    @Kenya Dig It?

“SHE made it a race issue when she wrote a letter to the P.O.T.U.S before even attempting to talk to the university she supposedly represents.”

Yes, she did — and because of her carelessness, the story has now made national news and is on today’s front page of one of the most prominent newspapers in the country. This debacle isn’t going away any time soon. Other media outlets will follow suit.

And all this has occurred in time for Homecoming. Shameful.

  • BAHAMAS/CHICAGO/CAYMAN GIRL

As long as she is a student at an HBCU she has the right to run for queen bottom line! She tried to reach out to her school and nada! As President Obama is also Hawaian, and understands how it feels to be the first, she reached out to him, hey I ain’t mad at her!

  • White Women Rule

Well, if that’s the case darling I do believe our President is in the wrong office. Isn’t the Presidency traditionally held by a white male? I’m hoping that you realize how truly pathetic your writers are for posing this question. But then again, isn’t it about time for “Chocolate Universities” to get a taste of integration. Bravo!!!!

  • FMB

Well it didn’t say Ms. Black Hampton. So anyone student can have this title.

  • D-Ruck

How you gonna say a white person can’t be crowned at a historically black college, when we just had a black man become President after hundreds of years of white predecessors? Let’s get over it already and treat others how we would want to be treated. If a black woman became queen of a predominately white school, would it be racist for the whites to question the move? You can’t have it both ways…

  • Pam #2

well she goes to the school so why not? part time or full time student, she still represents them. if it were a black girl winning at a historically white school (which MOST schools are) would that be racist? its not even that big a deal, really. congrats to her, i think she’s pretty :]

wow there some really bitter racists black chicks on here…thank God for white women!!!!

  • DLwilhem

Of course it’s about race. Black people are racist too!!!She’s the hottest girl and she deserves to be the winner. If a predominantly white school had a black home coming queen no one would care. The students at this school are being racist

  • Faye

So it’s okay for her to pay her money to attend the college, enter the competition, compete but not win. WoW! That’s backwards. It’s ’09 people!

  • kingsley

YOU KNOW WHAT, I LOVE MY PEOPLE, BE WE ARE A TRIP!!! ITS AMAZING WHEN A PERSON OF COLOR GETS AN ACHIEVEMENT IN A PRODOMINANTLY WHITE SETTING, ITS A FRONT PAGE SHOW; WE NEED TO HAVE A DAMN PARADE; WE HOLDING HANDS SINGING “WE SHALL OVERCOME” AND STUFF. BUT IF A CAUCASIAN COME TO A HBCU AND ACHIEVE, WE WENT BACK IN TIME. THAT’S A RACIST MENTALITY IN ITSELF! I FEEL THAT WE SHOULD BE EQUAL ACROSS THE BOARD! (I KNOW THAT’S PREACHING TO THE CHOIR) BUT BECAUSE WE HAVE TO PUSH EXTRA TO ACHIEVE ON THEIR SIDE OF THE STREET, THAT DOESN’T SAY THAT WE C A N ‘ T DO IT.

  • http://whitemeat.wordpress.com Invictus

Leave the white girl alone. I notice when that white boy was crowned valedictorian at an HCBU a couple of years ago you black chicks was swooning in the aisles. Let it be a white chick and all hell breaks loose. Obama is president now. The whole game has flipped and the results haven’t happened yet. Look for more of this.

  • Rawlsdog

Why are black people so upset about this. We are acting like the racist white folks from the 60′s. We love it when one of ours is the first, but God forbid if a different race is the first in something we think black ppl should only be a part of. What if she was Latina or Asian? Would there be this much of an uproar? Black people grow up and stop being childish.
