Missy Elliott Is First Female Rapper Up For Songwriters Hall Of Fame

She Joins A List Of Other Prestigious Nominees

Missy Elliott is getting some major recognition for her pen game.

According to USA Today, the rapper, who has penned songs for people like Beyoncé and Whitney Houston, is nominated for the 2019 Songwriters Hall of Fame.

This would make her the first female rapper nominated for the prestigious title. She could become the third rapper to enter the organization after recent inductees Jay-Z and Jermaine Dupri.

Other performing nominees that will be considered are Mariah Carey, Chrissie Hynde, Vince Gill, Mike Love, Jimmy Cliff, Jeff Lynne, Cat Stevens, John Prine, Lloyd Price, Tommy James and the Eurythmics (Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart).

Non-performing nominees include people like Dean Dillon, Jerry Fuller and Dallas Austin, who wrote hits for people like TLC and Boyz II Men.

Songwriters are eligible for induction after they’ve written hit songs for at least 20 years.

Six songwriters, or songwriting groups, will be inducted at the Hall’s 50th annual Induction & Awards Gala in New York on June 13, 2019. Three non-performing songwriters and three performing songwriters can be voted on by eligible members up until December 17.

Missy is known for churning out hits for various singers and groups in the 90s and 2000s. Well-known bops that she penned or helped pen include “Where My Girls At” by 702, “So Gone” by Monica and a remake of LaBelle‘s “Lady Marmalade” by Christina Aguilera, Pink, Lil Kim and Mya. “Lady Marmalade” went on to win a Grammy and the top spot on the Hot 100 chart for five weeks.

And of course Missy has her own hits, including bangers like “Get Ur Freak On,” “Work It,” and “Lose Control.”

Missy responded to her nomination in a tweet, writing “I am Humbly Grateful to be nominated with so many other AMAZING writers. Congratulations to all of them also.”
