Ten Black Women Missing or Dead And You Have Not Heard About It…Why???

Jesus please take the wheel over in Rocky Mount, N.C., where 10 black women have either been found murdered or are still missing. To make matters worst, these sad cases haven’t even been receiving media attention:
Ten women have been found slain or have been declared missing in Rocky Mount, N.C., in recent years. But the rest of the country hasn’t heard about…… a possible serial killer stalking the young women in this Southern town of 60,000. The latest victim, Elizabeth Jane Smallwood, was identified on Oct. 12. Why have the Rocky Mount homicides been largely ignored?
“When you think about the famous missing person cases over the last few years it’s Chandra Levy, Natalee Holloway, and Laci Peterson,” notes Sam Sommers, associate professor of psychology at Tufts University. All these women had a few things in common—they were white, educated, and came from middle-class families. The victims in Rocky Mount—which residents describe as a “typical Southern town,” and is about 40 percent white and more than 50 percent black—were different. They were all African-American, many were poor, and some had criminal histories including drug abuse and prostitution.
Police have not officially linked all the murders and disappearances, but community members claim the similarities among the women, their lifestyles, and the location of their bodies make a connection all too obvious. “If you find two bodies in the same location, this could be the work of the same person or people,” says Rocky Mount Police Chief John Manley, who would not comment on a connection, but implied the possibility.
“If it was someone of a different race, things would have been dealt with the first time around; it wouldn’t have taken the fifth or sixth person to be murdered,” says Andre Knight, a city-council member and president of the local NAACP chapter. “All these women knew each other and lived in the same neighborhood; this is the sign of a potential serial killer. When it didn’t get the kind of attention it needed, it made the African-American community frustrated.”
The news has not been covering these murders anywhere close to the way they covered JonBenet or pregnant Lacy Peterson. SMH

What’s new…that’s just how this country is…it could have been 100 black females and 1 white female and you would hear about the 1 white female before the 100 black females.
this isnt surprising, how many “amber alerts” have we heard of for a missing black child?

Another thing to consider is that most of these women that were killed were prostitutes or drug abusers…..the reality is that most of these women probably didn’t have frequent contact with their own family members, and could have been missing for weeks or months before the police was ever notified…. Their are hundreds of missing WHITE runaways, prostitutes & drug users; they also don’t get much media attention. This is not a racial issue; it’s a moral issue. Unfortuanately, society doesn’t care much about these type of people.
My husbands just mentioned this bc ofcourse yesterday – there was something about it on the news….what color was she? white – we are black…racism still exists…they dont really care.

NO shocker here, the American media is one the most biased and prejudiced i have ever seen in my life. The only black related news that are worthy of coverage is of black men in gun related incidents, black men over populating prisons, high drop out rate of black students, basically any news that portrays black folks in negative light is sufficient enough for mainstream news media coverage. Its such a F#@&%$G SHAME, makes you ashamed to call yourself an American sometimes as it seems pretty clear, we aren’t counted in this country, having a Black President has made no significant improvement to the treatment and respect of Black Americans.

We touched on this yesterday in the ESPN post, but the same thing applies – there are always going to be double-standards/unequality in regards to whites and blacks. It’s just fact. What with the internet and blogs at our fingertips, we can certainly “get the word out” without depending on white run media? They don’t give a damn about no *****!
The story itself is sad and scary, and if I lived in that area, I’d have to take some ‘precationary measures’, but the fact still stands, we are overlooked in life, and death, by white socitey…It’s not right, but that’s what it is. When will we learn to stop depending on “them” to have our best interest in mind, or expecting them to care?? Wake up.
I am orginally from Rocky Mount, NC and this is really disturbing. I have so many relatives there. I pray this doesn’t keep happening because eventually it will be someone I know!!!! Rocky Mount is a racist little town always has been and always will be!!! And that is why I could never go back there to settle down. Please pray that justice will be served to for those lives that have already been taken!!! PEACE!
If a blk child is kidnapped and sexually abused, I think ppl would be more sympathetic to the victim.But in this case these were drug addicted prostitues and this is not something that ppl are going to stop and give a ***** about.

Because they’re black of course and probably not from the suburbs..When black women go missing they’re declared run a ways not missing..It’s sad that you have to be a young attractive white women or a small white child to grab national headlines when you become missing..Nancy Grace has dedeciated her entire show to that little girl in Flordia and Natalie Holloway the teen that went missing on her senior trip still gets a headline every now and then and that was over three years ago..And it doesn’t matter if they are prostitutes or drug addicts there is still someone murdering women.
@ls….there are thousands of missing children black & white that don’t get coverage. Yes, the white middle cl*****/rich people get more media coverage, as well as, rich black, educated people who get more media coverage….. But face it, if you haven’t contributed much to society, ie. prostitutes, drug users, runaway teens, ect.; society doesn’t feel the need to “give back” to them… Missing children is another subject… there are at least 1000 cases per year of missing white & black (mostly white) children per year, and over 40,000 cases of missing children in the system. Are these 40,000 cases covered??? No! In my opinion, this article is about how society views our “rejects” (lack of a better word) of society.
The reason why black women and children go missing and murdered that doesn’t get reported is because if you aren’t white with blond hair you not a rating getter. Now when the young man lost his life in that violent way in Chicago it only got so much press because of the pure gore of it and the fact hat the president was trying to help bring the summer Olympics there. News is just like a sitcom they need ratings to survive. We aren’t that interesting unless it’s someone of a celebrity status.

News stories are geared towards a key audience. That audience is white women between 18 to 45. This is your largest consumer base. This is all the media care about because it’s not journalism, it’s about making money. No offense, but we are not in the key demo.
Black people. Had all these 10 Black women were suburban middle cl*****/working cl***** women/ professional black women killed in the same area; they would have had media coverage…. there are many WHITE prostitutes, drug user women that will NEVER get media coverage… Sometimes, black people are just plain paranoid….everything aint ALWAYS about racism!!

But there are little black girls that are just minding they’re own business and they get *****ed right off the streets and we hear nothing about it! The reason why white ppl get so much coverage when ppl go missing is for the simple fact that white ppl GIVE A *****-they will be the main ones that go out with search and rescue looking for thier loved ones, they are the first to give a helping hand to help FIND that person,vigils, posters,fund raisers,knocking on doors,lobbying politicians-they are proactive!!! I agree that a life is a life regardless of color, cl***** or gender. However, I also agree that every time a black person is at a disadvantage, doesn’t mean it’s due to being black. I don’t think race is the case here. The white victims mentioned remained in the media because their families wouldn’t let it die. The white families were on every venue they could get on in an effort to find their loved one. When the loved one was found dead, their families were on a consistent, unrelenting mission to find the culprit. I agree that these families had the education, money and wherewithall to do this. Unfortunately, by the description of the murdered black women, that doesn’t seem the case with their families. I don’t think it’s racial here. Their families need to exert more effort in gaining media attention. If they don’t know how to do it themselves, they need to find someone who does. Most importantly, they can’t let up until they get resolution.

In a fantasy world, yes everyone deserves the same treatment. In the real world, if I see women that were killed on 5th ave because they got into a car with a stranger because she was giving head, or someone killed a crack head in the alley with her crack pipe next to her….Not so much.
This story has went nationwide, but because of their background no one really paid any attention.
The FBI got involve in August, yes it took a long time for them to even let us know here in the city..most of us found out when WRAL reported on the news…not Rocky Mount paper or news.
It is sad when people of judge because of their race and lifestyle.
And the bad part about this story is the decease families had to get out there and make it happen.

Exactly. No one is saying it’s right that people will get judged by their background but this is what it is. Take off the rose colored gl*****es because America doesn’t give a flying f*** about black people as it is. Even black people look down on pro’s and crackheads. Are they people too, YES. Do they deserve justice, YES. This is cause for alarm not just for black women but for all women. The killer could start killing white women and then we will have heard it on every media show. This is a very sad story but the conclusion is more than a stretch. The fact that 10 drug users/prostitutes in a town of 60,000 have been murdered or disappeared is not surprising. Unless there’s something to suggest that the killer is the same person, this theory would seem to be silly.
There are literally thousands of women of every race in this kind of lifestyle who go missing….people who live like this are off the map.

I’M LIKE 30 MINS FROM ROCKY MOUNT, AND I WAS HEARING ABOUT IT ON THE RADIO STATIONS AT ONE POINT, HAVEN’T HEARD ANYONE TALK ABOUT IT LATELY….ONE DAY THEY HAD A FEW OF THE MOTHERS OF THE VICTIMS AND AN AUNT SPEAKING ABOUT IT AND I WAS ALMOST IN TEARS……THE SITUATION IS JUST TERRIBLE
What gets me about shows like Nancy Grace is that they don’t just give more attention to missing/murdered pretty white girl but they beat the story into the ground. It’s almost like you get tired of hearing the person’s name – Lacy Peterson, Lauderbach, blah, blah. They’ll be interviewing old cl*****mates and distant relatives and *****, spending 10 hours a week on one person. I understand if that will be the bigger story but can a couple missing black women (or ugly/poor white women for that matter) get maybe an 1 hour out of the 10.

Well, I hope that Bossip makes it their business to get the word out there. It would make a whole lot of difference if there was a voice to advocate tragedies such as this.
Enough people frequent Bossip, myself included, and a lot of time I get frustrated with the message that is being sent.
It would be refreshing to know that the Writers put their efforts into something valuable like this, as well as the news that brings entertainment.
I hope I see more posts pertaining to this situation so that this community doesn’t feel so hopeless.

I remember a case that happened in upstate NY. It was about a little black boy who got murdered. The media didn’t cover the story but the boy’s single mother didn’t let that stop her. She went to her congressman and then wrote letters to her senator. She went all the way to the Governor’s office and that’s where the media covered the story. She told the media that she didn’t wait on them to cover her son’s story. I think she goes around high school and college campuses telling her story. I’m not too sure but I think that Essence magazine told her story and she’s writing a book. I’ll tell you something that boy’s mother worked hard to get justice for her son.

Nancy Grace is still investigating the little girl Kaylee’s murder and even though it is a tragedy that that beautiful little girl was slain, she only did one show on the the 16 yr old child in Chicago that was beaten to death a month back. Now lets get this straight, here you have the killer in custody (which turned out to be the confused mother), they also found the little girl’s remains, so that brings a some comfort to the mourning. But what about all the other missing child cases in America???? Where is the justice, attention, concern, and overall awarness for those families??? The tragedy of this young man shouldve been replayed over and over and over for the world to see, because Chicago has one of the worst criminal backgrounds in the U.S!! Jane Valez Mitchell is an uber feminist, which suprises me as to why she hasnt done any headlines on these missing women. The list goes on and on. If I recall correctly, I believe one of her relatives was in public relations and had media contacts, so the case garnered publicity, including CNN coverage.

Unfortunately these women’s family used mug shot photos of these women in orange jumpsuits and these fliers and billboards were distributed in the community instead of other photos where the women are at their best. When these photos were seen in the community, there were a backlash.

Think drug addict / prostitute and a visual of a black person comes to the average persons mind, but the fact is, that person is 7 times more likely to be white…..FACT.

I also think that the image of African Americans as being besieged by crime also affects news decisions. Today, I p*****ed by a New York Daily News stand with a front page story about a teen who fired a gun and the bullet killed a 92-year-old woman in the Bronx. His photo and the headline epitomized the stereotype of blacks as criminals, IMHO.
You can turn on the 6 o’clock news any night and find a story about crimes committed by blacks, but fewer about black victims. I think this impacts people’s perception of African Americans as perpetrators of violence.

I remember another case I heard recently on the news about a body found in Brooklyn. The police was trying to find out who the person was and the local news in NYC was carrying it.
Meanwhile in the Bronx a black family notified the police that their teenage daughter is missing and they distributed flyers around the neighborhood. Someone must have told the family to look in the morgue and low & behold they found their missing daughter. She was in the morgue in Brooklyn. She was the missing girl in news reports on TV.
Appartently their teenage daughter met a man on the internet and she agreed to meet him and he ended up killing her and dumped her naked body in Brooklyn. The body was sitting in the morgue for 2 or 3 months. The Bronx police didn’t notify the other NYC borough police departments about a missing black teenage girl and the Brooklyn police didn’t do it either.
If the girl’s family didn’t take initiative to find their daughter, they would have been still looking up to now. I think the family filed a lawsuit against the police department.

While you are there, get a calcualator and compare black population vs. drug use to white population vs. drug use and figure out the per capita numbers. I personally knew 3 of the 10 women that were murdered in Rocky Mount, NC and they were wild, but had families, children and friends that did care for them very much and even helped them out whenever possible. I stay in Rocky Mount NC, I knew one of the victims and yes she was a drug addict and did some prostitution, but she was friends with my father who stays in a small town not too far from Rocky Mount(Pinetops) she stayed in battleboro and whenever she was with my dad, he would help her out,she would gain alot of weigh and look real healthy but whenever she was in RM, it was back to the lifestyle she knew and she would get back small and mentally lost. when i heard about it. it was shocking because i knew of her and it was other females involved but she was the type to roam around with strangers. That doesn’t give anyone the right to take a persons life or ignore the situation at hand because the point is the killer of all of the females still is out there. everyone is a suspect even the police until the truth is out in the open. Rest in Peace “Sunshine” also when they found her nothing but the skeleton remained, so she was dead for weeks at a time before a farmer identified a dead body on his farm.

I think it’s a damn shame that the news focuses on BS like a sudoku champ, a balloon hoax and ignorance like that. CNN, MSNBC as well as FOX News dont want to focus on REAL issues like these 10 women killed, the soldiers loosing their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan and kids killing one another. Im so tired of the BS that the news broadcast now a days.
