Marcus Jordan, Michael’s son, is a freshman at UCF and is refusing to put on the team issued Adidas shoes:
Footwear is causing a problem for a University of Central Florida basketball freshman guard with a famous last name. Marcus Jordan, part of UCF basketball’s best recruiting class ever, wants to sport the family brand…
… while he plays for the Knights. Marcus is Michael Jordan’s son. The freshman’s choice poses a problem for the university, which has a multimillion-dollar contract with Adidas for all of its athletic wear. UCF is actually in talks to extend the deal another five years. Competitor Nike is the parent company for the Air Jordan brand. During the recruiting process, Marcus Jordan was reportedly told that what he wears on his feet wouldn’t be a problem. However, Adidas says a deal’s a deal. The University released a statement on the matter on Thursday, reading:”UCF and Adidas have partnered since 2005 and are in the final year of a five-year shoe, apparel and equipment agreement ending June 30, 2010. The parties have been in discussions over the course of the past year regarding a contract extension. It is important to state that UCF Athletics did make Adidas aware of Marcus’ recruitment and was led to believe that there would be a workable solution to a unique situation. We will continue to proceed with this understanding and the overall best interests of UCF Athletics and its student-athletes.”The Jordan brand is already affecting UCF basketball and the legend’s son has yet to make a bucket wearing black and gold, but the Knights’ season ticket sales have reportedly increased greatly.UCF’s first game is Nov. 13.
Marcus attending UCF means a lot for the school, yes, but if this kid thinks he is the greatest basketball player since his father, then the University is in for one-long-ride. Marcus is privileged but it is yet to be seen if he is as great as his father, so he needs to stay in his lane.
