Ummm acutally Taraji IS a Howard Alumn. She attended the fine arts school which is why she was probably there to support. I like Taraji back when everyone was still sleeping on her in Baby Boy. She was Oscar-worthy then and even more so now. Much respect. I’ll keep my comments about Luda to myself. @Lollipop, we’ve all done things in the past that we aren’t necessarily proud of. Thanks, but I’ve been finished for some time. And I hear you on the illiteracy rates, but if we’re going to compare apples to apples, yes, a much higher percentage of blacks that go on to higher education complete it.
I believe the literacy rates (or lack thereof) that Obama was speaking about was in reference to a basic education, such as a high school degree. But I feel you, we can ALWAYS use more intelligent, educated BLACK PEOPLE!

Yes, it’s still 20% lower than our white counterparts, but it is progress, and with the increase in numbers, it would seem that more and more are finally “getting the big picture”… Here’s a few more stats that I found interesting from the US Census…

Among blacks ages 25 and older, 82% have at least a high school diploma (as of July 2007). Source: U.S. Census Bureau.

Regarding whites, yes, they also have a low percentage of college graduates… again, I don’t see many of “us” in the board meetings, IDT team meetings ect…. I don’t have my master’s, but I’m contemplating (just a little) a master’s cert. With my experience, it’s the same difference, 1/2 the time.
I was young and had children while I completed my higheer education, so it was 1st and foremost that I be able to take care of my children (IE; make a living). Having done/doing that (my son is in 1st yr of college) it may be time for me to go back, but if I never do, I’m ok with that. I work in a white male dominated “good ole boy” field, amongst peers who primarily have their Masters, but guess where I’m situated? Right next to them, making that looong money, JUST LIKE THEM. But I have about 80K less in student loans. With or w/o, I’m good, and I consider myself to have “finished” because I graduated from the program I intended from the beginning.
Do you believe if you don’t have a master’s level cert/degree/phd that you haven’t finished school?

If you have education higher than an H.S., graduated with a B.S. I would consider that as finishing school… I’m impressed with the 80K less student loans…I’m still working to acheive that goal. The good ole’ boy field….I should know this, but can’t figure that out as of yet… Since you have a son entering college this year that should put you near my age…between 42 & 45 yrs old??? Do you ever visit Michael Baisden iseecolor??? You should try it; you might find a pleasant surprise.

@Ms. J – yeah, but the student loans are piling up again, with my son entering. One thing I don’t want for him is to have that baggage, so we are footing a most of the bill. The rest is work study… (gotta teach ‘em some responsibility! )
I too, work in Corporate America, but by “good ole boy”, I meant – “a white male Southerner with an unpretentious convivial manner and conservative or intolerant attitudes and a strong sense of fellowship with and loyalty to other members of his peer group” (legal definition- it fits to a tee…) I live in ATX and work with alumni mainly from UT or Texas A&M, many of them with previous military exp, so the attitude toward blacks and woman in general is one of pompousness and condescenscion. It makes me feel good to know that I’m with them every step of the way, if not a step ahead. I know it burns them up that I am on par with them. That’s what makes it easy to come to work and smile . Kill ‘em with kindness, and keep doin’ my job. W/O education, I would never be able to say that, in fact, with my background, if I didn’t have an education, I’d probably be dead or in some other type of serious shit.
It’s been nice chattin’ with you. Sorry you had it so rough in here today, but it happens to the best of us… I’ve read a couple of Baisden books. I’ll have to check the site out, thanks!
