Kim Kardashian and Reggie Bush ran into a fake-bootleg Kim and Reggie at a Halloween party in the N.O. this past weekend. The dude dressed up as Reggie obviously painted his face black…With all the controversy with the Dallas Cowboy’s cheerleader dressed up as Weezy, we want to know your thoughts.

I don’t think this Reggie Bush costume is offensive at all. Nor did I think the Dallas Cowboy cheerleader that dressed up like Lil Wayne was being racist. These are halloween costumes! They clearly admire Reggie and Wayne and wanted to be them for a few hours.

I can understand people getting offended if it’s obviously not a costume, but on Halloween I truly don’t think it’s all that serious. I have a friend who dressed up as MJ during his years of having white skin and she put white makeup on her face to appear ‘white’. Of course she could have dressed up as him without the makeup but it wouldn’t have added as much effect. I think that we are overly sensitive, and I understand why we are, but it’s ok to relax and not try to find the offense in EVERYTHING…

Okay, putting on Brown make up in reference to your favorite celeb/character on Halloween is not blackface. Putting black/tar colored make up and painting your lips red is blackface.

IMO blackface CAN be offensive, but it depends on the context of the costume. If a white person used blackface to portray a slave or some caricature of black people that’s not cool. But people painting their face to look like Reggie Bush or Lil Wayne isn’t racist, it seems more like they want to portray someone they idolize or admire.

Am I offended by it? No, not particularly, but just like others have said, if a Black person wants to be say Madonna for Halloween, we don’t go around slathering ourselves in white make-up, so why is it that the pank people feel the need to do blackface to be convincing as one of us? 1. The so-called ‘Race Card’ doesn’t exist or is extremely overrated if it does. It’s never been an advantage to be black in this country and although racism has been overly used as an excuse often times it has been the case.
2. All this depends on where or what party these people attended. If a white person wears their Lil Wayne outfit at the golf club or some just about all-white frat party it may not seem offensive and may go over ok. Then again if they came to a party here in the Chi or stepped out in my neighborhood with that ***** on then all hell could break loose.

Another point I’d like to make is that, if the reason someone chooses a particular person to be for Halloween is because they supposedly idolize them, then it really says something to me when you feel you HAVE to make yourself the same color as your “idol” in order to emulate them… it means you can’t see p*****ed their COLOR!!! How ironic, considering the fact that these tend to be the same people who want to preach that “colorblind” crap.

I think it says a lot when a white man, Harry Connick, Jr., can muster up more outrage about blackface than a number of us. The irony is blinding. I don’t see any appropriate reason for someone to deliberately darken his or her face in order to imitate an African American.
I think we’ve lost the sense of discerning when we’re being the target of jokes — or perhaps we just don’t care anymore. I wonder if a number of us even have a strong sense of self or our history.

I agree with you that these issues must be addressed, but I also believe that the derogatory cultural images that are being disseminated here and around the world are also worthy of attention and have a psychological effect that can influence the matters you just described.
It’s halloween, however, it seems to be a fad this year with all this black face stuff. Halloween appears to be the perfect opportunity for white people to resurrect something that is/was completely unacceptable to our culture in the past. The minute we don’t think it’s a big deal, you’ll see this type of ish on the TV on the regular all because some people feel, “oh it’s halloween” there’s no harm.
It depends how and why it is done. If someone is not black and wants to be lil wayne for Halloween then what are they supposed to do? Put on a braid wig and dress like him? People wouldnt think its him. If someone wants to be Beyonce so they put on a brownish/blondish wig and some one piece suit, people would not even think its Beycone. So for Halloween sure I am not offended but if someone is doing it to be purposely racist then of course its wrong. Yes, I’m cognizant of this effect that you speak of, which was created to systematically lock us into a game where dissociation was forced among us. However, in order to reverse (or even attempt to) this sickening cycle, we must first provide solutions for home to bring about any deep social change.
What’s around the world is worthy of our concentration, but, the ongoing problems in our community deserve the most attention, IMO.

I agree that the problems at home need to be addressed, but does that mean that we cannot respond to a blatant cultural offense? Must we compartmentalize to the point of ignoring certain practices that may only augment? I can mention other races/ethnicities that seem to have no problem nipping external actions in the bud that they feel to be offensive, and they still seem to address internal issues in their communities.
I don’t like the buffoonish behavior exhibited by some of us, nor do I like it being imitated for public ridicule. I think both perspectives should be addressed.

No, there should be a response. My initial point was that when we divert our attention away from issues (that I stated above) that affect our own, or we aren’t vexed by the current Stepin Fetchit behavior exhibited by many black people in our community, it becomes a major problem.
We should address internal issues, but that’s where our point of focus should be.

Once i saw a picture in black n white of the white folks back then on stage with the black face~~ and they were bopping each other over the head falling down acting a damn fool (the white folks0 who had the face on and the white folks were sitting in the front role laughing their *****es off and wasnt no black folks even in the theatre!! I agree, and I was not suggesting that much-needed attention be diverted from these issues. I agree with what Divine just posted, this isn’t an “either/or” situation. We can address culturally offensive behavior and still work on ameliorating our internal conditions.
To me, it goes back to the issue of the use of the word “ni**a,” which some whites complain they cannot use while a number of blacks do use the term regularly. There are some practices that are blatantly, irrevocably offensive, and blackface is one of them. It is not tolerable on Halloween (which I think some use as a ready excuse) or any other day. If you give an inch, some will take a mile.

I understand it’s halloween, and people should be allowed to dress up as whatever or whoever they want, but I have noticed that while white people feel the need to paint their face dark, black people don’t paint their face white when wearing a costume, yet we still know who they are supposed to be. Is the paint really necessary?

I still don’t see this is as an either/or situation, and I think it’s an incorrect *****umption to think that a person who’s offended by blackface doesn’t care about internal issues ailing our community. I don’t see the issue as either or myself and can clearly identify intent versus humor or poor judgement and in each case judge them individually. We all see things differently as we are not monolithic in thought or perceptions, this situation we as a race find ourselves in is one which needs to be addressed on many fronts if we are ever to rise above it. I approach it from the stand point that its difficult to demand respect when we can’t respect ourselves much like you would tell a young sista how can she expect respect if she doesn’t respect herself. You do it how you choose as long as the goal is to uplift black people and I’ll go at it the way I know best which is give it to them straight with no chaser and be there when they need…hopefully we’ll eventually rise above our own issues amongst ourselves and collectively address the wrongs we’ve allowed to continue thru the divide and conquer technique we seem to have trouble getting past……I feel what you’re saying..
