Offended at blackface? Of course.

Of course, im offended and was offende even though i was there back in the day when they did it to make fun of my ancestors.. hell yes , im offended, Fuc- Halloween, its the balck face thats offensive, you mean they cant dress up like lil Wayne or reggie bush with out the blackface????? 1. The so-called ‘Race Card’ doesn’t exist or is extremely overrated if it does. It’s never been an advantage to be black in this country and although racism has been overly used as an excuse often times it has been the case.

2. All this depends on where or what party these people attended. If a white person wears their Lil Wayne outfit at the golf club or some just about all-white frat party it may not seem offensive and may go over ok. Then again if they came to a party here in the Chi or stepped out in my neighborhood with that sh!t on then all hell could break loose.

3. Rose is my future wife.

Another point I’d like to make is that, if the reason someone chooses a particular person to be for Halloween is because they supposedly idolize them, then it really says something to me when you feel you HAVE to make yourself the same color as your “idol” in order to emulate them… it means you can’t see passed their COLOR!!! How ironic, considering the fact that these tend to be the same people who want to preach that “colorblind” crap.

I agree with you that these issues must be addressed, but I also believe that the derogatory cultural images that are being disseminated here and around the world are also worthy of attention and have a psychological effect that can influence the matters you just described.

It’s halloween, however, it seems to be a fad this year with all this black face stuff. Halloween appears to be the perfect opportunity for white people to resurrect something that is/was completely unacceptable to our culture in the past. The minute we don’t think it’s a big deal, you’ll see this type of ish on the TV on the regular all because some people feel, “oh it’s halloween” there’s no harm.

It depends how and why it is done. If someone is not black and wants to be lil wayne for Halloween then what are they supposed to do? Put on a braid wig and dress like him? People wouldnt think its him. If someone wants to be Beyonce so they put on a brownish/blondish wig and some one piece suit, people would not even think its Beycone. So for Halloween sure I am not offended but if someone is doing it to be purposely racist then of course its wrong. The Australian show was wrong in my eyes cause it was for a show and their outfits and singing could have explained enough who they were trying to be. Get over it its Halloween! No, there should be a response. My initial point was that when we divert our attention away from issues (that I stated above) that affect our own, or we aren’t vexed by the current Stepin Fetchit behavior exhibited by many black people in our community, it becomes a major problem.

I agree, and I was not suggesting that much-needed attention be diverted from these issues. I agree with what Divine just posted, this isn’t an “either/or” situation. We can address culturally offensive behavior and still work on ameliorating our internal conditions.

To me, it goes back to the issue of the use of the word “ni**a,” which some whites complain they cannot use while a number of blacks do use the term regularly. There are some practices that are blatantly, irrevocably offensive, and blackface is one of them. It is not tolerable on Halloween (which I think some use as a ready excuse) or any other day. If you give an inch, some will take a mile.

I don’t see the issue as either or myself and can clearly identify intent versus humor or poor judgement and in each case judge them individually. We all see things differently as we are not monolithic in thought or perceptions, this situation we as a race find ourselves in is one which needs to be addressed on many fronts if we are ever to rise above it. I approach it from the stand point that its difficult to demand respect when we can’t respect ourselves much like you would tell a young sista how can she expect respect if she doesn’t respect herself. You do it how you choose as long as the goal is to uplift black people and I’ll go at it the way I know best which is give it to them straight with no chaser and be there when they need…hopefully we’ll eventually rise above our own issues amongst ourselves and collectively address the wrongs we’ve allowed to continue thru the divide and conquer technique we seem to have trouble getting past……I feel what you’re saying..
