‘Precious’ Generating Oscar Buzz
Posted by Bossip Staff
The Hollyweird elite are gossipin’ that the new movie “Precious” will likely be up for an Oscar. Set in Harlem in 1987, the movie chronicles Precious’s struggle to overcome the desperation of her circumstances, including the emotional and physical abuse she suffers at the hands of her mother (Mo’Nique). Go under the hood for the trailer and a NY Times review.

I plan to see this movie in a few weeks with friends, and I look forward to seeing Lee Daniels’ film adaptation of “Push” (the NY Times magazine’s profile of him a few Sundays ago was very good). After seeing Mo’Nique’s acting in Daniels’ earlier film “Shadowboxer,” I’m interested in her portrayal of an extremely unsympathetic character in “Precious.”
I’m also curious in the new movie “Skin” with Sophie Okonedo, from “Hotel Rwanda,” based on a real-life South African story. There may be more than one sister nominated for Oscars next year.

I saw the movie last night and it didn’t live up to the hype that everyone put behind it. Monique did a good job but if you took away the profanity this movie could have easily been shown on the Lifetime channel.
The ending felt sooooo incomplete but i’m sure many people will be singing this movie’s praises. I just didn’t enjoy it ;(

Tracy, why don’t you see the movie before you make comments? It’s an incredible film about hope and finding yourself despite everything and everyone in your life being against you. If you see the film or read the book you’ll understand the character and why she says what she says at the BEGINNING of the movie. I hope everyone supports this movie by buying a ticket in a theater and not a bootleg – this is a Black film written, directed and produced by Black people and starring Black people. If it does well at the box office more films “For us, by us” can get made.

um, did anybody read the book first? the movie was based on a novel titled “Push” by a woman named Sapphire… The reason why she said she wanted a “light skinned boyfriend with good hair” is because she was made to believe that “light” was better… I haven’t seen the movie yet, but the book moved me to tears. And I’d rather have an “incomplete” ending that lets you wonder what happens to the characters and come up with your own ending than a quick, thrown together conclusion (i.e., “I Can Do Bad By Myself”, “Madea Goes To Jail”)… JMO…

A couple of my friends have seen this movie and feel the previews don’t represent what this movie is about. They said they felt like it was trying to make a joke and comedy of something too serious and felt it was just “ok”. But to me the preview looks good. So I may see it and no, I never read the book.

Bossip yall are some hyprocrites
why are yall “Shaking yalls head” at “I wanna light skin boyfriend with good hair?”
Yall make fun of Akon because he’s dark skin, yall always praising interracial couples (take that back only interracial couples that yall like)
Yall need to make up your minds because yall are not consistent with the mess yall post up on here. Hell that’s what is programmed in the minds of black folks today and in other different ethnic groups is colorism. Lets face it, very few black people really want to be dark brown. Most of the stars you see in hollywood today are bi-racial because that’s what sales to the “mainstream” audience (aka white people). So that “light skin with good hair” line that she said is the norm. Its sad but it is what it is.

Dear the sad thing is that I was in an audience filled with people just like you. They laughed throughout the film for some unknown reason. I guess they, like you don’t have the comp*****ion to understand the film or the young woman’s plight. I guess it must be true, the younger generation is dumbing down in a rather painful way. I so want to be blunt and just call you “stupid” but I’m sure that’s something you’re already aware of. My advice, stop listening to rap music and read a book. And please don’t attempt to bore me with how you’re a college educated woman, because I doubt you’ve ever p*****ed one, let alone attended one.

I’m going to see this tonight. As much as I don’t like to see movies with such darkness and violence, it makes me proud that black filmmakers have made a movie that does not celebrate the stereotypes in our community and make fun of ourselves (*ahem* Tyler Perry, Wayans Bros), rather they’ve inspired people with a story of survival.
Not to mention Hollywood is taking notice and I swear I will boycott if something related to this movie doesn’t win dogonit!!!!
WTF
11/7/09, 10:28:am
bossip im tired of yall not posting my ish
but another thing…this movie will most likely win an Oscar simply because of the fact that is “gritty” and “raw.”
Look at Denzel and Halle Berry for instance, Denzel won an Oscar by playing the role of a crooked cop. Halle won her Oscar by playing the role of a struggling black woman in Monster’s Ball. I know the Slum Dog was not a black film, but that is an ethnic bollywood film that won an Oscar. So all I’m saying is that the “mainstream” audience loves to see people of color in that real raw state when it comes to movies.

Goodmorning to ALL now onto the topic at hand.
I absolutely can not wait to see this movie. I know many that suggest before anyone sees a movie in particulary a deep movie to read the book first. I have yet to read the book for movies, because from what I learned of those who do read the book first 99% are highly disappointed in the film adaptation, therefore I perfer not to set myself up for disappoint.
ALSO! it TERRIBILY angers me that many times media outlets especially online choose one part of a movie or article that either offends or is the most negative which to me seems to intentionally want to deteer(sp)people from supporting something. WHO CARES!!! of the “light skin” line of the movie that is just one line out of the movie NOT THE WHOLE MOVIE.
This movie from what I learned is SERIOUS touches on: SEXUAL ABUSE, LOW-SELF ESTEEM, MENTAL/EMOTIONAL /PHYSICAL ABUSE, RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE MOM/DAUGHTER and many other things.
On another note and I really hate to say this but I seen the young leading star girl on 106 yesterday and I pray and hope that someone talks to her about losing weight, because she is at a dangerous side & that is alot of weight on and around her heart, but she seem very nice and intelligent.

@ Bmarie
Did’nt have to read the book to know why she stated, “she wanted a light skinned boyfriend with good hair”. That mentality has been ingrained in blacks since slavery and perpetuated from generation to generation ….. unfortunately. Just one of the ugly, emotional, mental scars left over from slavery that plagues many blacks, even today.
Ms.Ej
11/7/09, 10:37:am
@WTF- Morning and I see your point regarding those of our kind winning oscars, however for those reasons makes me so upset. I disagree that mainstream audiences love to see “us” in raw state they seem to want to see us in positions that either make us look loose or crooked rather than giving an oscar on a movie of substance.
To me: Denzel should have gotten an Oscar for Malcom X or my other favorite “Cry Freedom” and Halle should have gotten one for Queen–>to me it was that good, but it wasn’t a motion picture. Angela B*****et for Tina Turner because that movie showed her growth and victory towards the end to me it was just awesome. Whoopi Goldberg for the Color Purple (though that movie didn’t make the black man look good, but it had deep substance) IMO.
Halle getting an oscar for her “make me feel good” scene bothered me on so many levels.
Loved it

People this movie is not about light skin/dark skin (another story) please do not let that one liner overshadow what the movie is about. I do not know if anyone watched Oprah yesterday, but she had Monique on as her guest to promote the movie and showed a very raw scene…I so can’t wait to see it.
Question though…why is it only shown in limited theatres? I can’t stand when folks (white) do that or I could be wrong.

My friends and I read the book and decided to go see the movie. I couldn’t read the entire book becaus eit was so sad! The movie was good, but it didn’t give the book justice. There is a true meaning in the story. The girl felt that if she was white/light skinned she would have a better life. It was so sad how she was treated. There are a lot of girls being abused by their father or grown men! It was truly a sad story!
just me
11/7/09, 11:26:am
Saw the film and thought it was good. Mo and Gabby give incredible performances! You’ll forget they are acting. Mo’Nique is EVIL all over. She has ZERO redeeming qualities. Gabby/Precious will embrace you with her ability to HOPE despite her horrific cir*****stances.
I didn’t grow up with parents who told me I was “stupid and would never be anything” so this was hard for me to handle at some points.
Overall, I think it’s a “go-see”!

@YORKIELOVER- Monique appeared on the Oprah show just the other day promoting the movie and Monique told of how an Asian man came up to her crying saying that he was “Precious” in the movie.
Abuse, incest, and rape is not just a “black” thing and not just only in “our community”. Truthfully, often times most reports of such abuse shown in the news media is of white people.
I will tell you about a truth that needs to be shed on our community, but white media seems to not care is of African American children and women being kidnapped–>now that is the truth.

The movie doesn’t come out in Toledo until next week (maybe) but I read the book over the summer. I had to put the book down several times because it was hard to read about the abuse and self esteem issues that Precious went through, but I am glad I finished it. Even with all the awful things she went through, Precious somehow achieved hope at the end. No, it wasn’t an ending that was all nice and neat, the ending was very “to be continued” which more accurately reflects real life than feel-good endings. As an educator, the book made me take a hard look at how many school systems discard students too easily, due to schools being overcrowded, students being regarded as test scores and not people and teachers being overworked without ample resources. I hope that girls like Precious in our schools, at our jobs, in our churches and in our neighborhoods are treated with dignity and respect, but I know the painful truth is that they are not and we are all to blame….

To the people on here making NEGATIVE comments about Gabriele Sadibe THE LEADING LADY IN THIS MOVIE I just want to say you are very ignorant! While you are clowning this girl is laughing all the way to the bank! It just makes me laugh when I hear ignorant comments on this girl. It’s sad that we cant just have some common sense and say something nice about this girl and support her movie, instead everybody would rather talk about her weight and down her thinking shes less beautiful because shes not a size 2, light skinned with “GOOD HAIR” you people are just STUPID in my opinion. To all the people with the racist comments: You are the devil advocates, and soon you will have your time in hell. I have read the book, it was very realistic, and close to many peoples lives. Also The lady in the film isn’t actually this character!! she is a beautiful black woman, and thinks very highly of herself, regardless of what you other low self-esteem fools think. Why isn’t she beautiful, is it b/c her skin is dark, or b/c she is thick. God made each and everyone of us in his own image so when you say you dont like the way she looks, you must dont like God. On the other hand who died and made the Oscars the deemer of all things great. With enough money you could host just an upscale event as they have, they have no credibilty, obviously, b/c every movie that has won an Oscar has been far from worthy of the highest award (Black or White) films. Lastly I am very dissapointed in bossip for allowing this Hannibal and Redhot crap to post their views, they can barely spell, much less critique a film.

Saw the movie in an “indie” film festival in my city on 10/02. I agree. It was a made for television type movie. Monique is definitely not Oscar worthy nor is the star, because I could barely understand what the child was saying. Everyone else was soooo supporting; very little screen time. I would rather see Paula or Mariah or Lenny get it for Supporting Oscars, rather than the so-called stars.

I think I’ve had my fill of these types of movies. I equate it with the Black community hanging out it’s dirty laundry on a line for the world to see. I’m so over this type of sorry representation. Call me when Spike releases something new.
Jesus, put something significant up on the screen like a long-overdue, respectful depiction of the Emmitt Till story. When’s that coming?

Incredible.
There are black women cashing welfare checks. Many more dealing (or not)with morbid obesity and all its *****ociated chronic diseases. Some trying in every way to look white and lighten up.
Still, people come on here to disrespect this young, beautiful sister,Gabourey who’s making a $erious move forward in life. She is overweight but she can lose the weight. Some of you will never lose your ignorance.

I just came from seeing the movie in Midtown Atlanta and I must say WHOA!!! I have a headache from all the emotions I experience watching this raw art imitating life. Just to see the movie is a feat in itself if you are blessed enough to have it come to your town. Three showing were sold out and there was absolutely no place to park and when you did find a place you stood in line for like forever (I almost thought I was going to the club). Watching this movie just make me further wish that people would be nosey and look out for one another. There’s no way in hell a girl should have HIV at 16 and never had a boyfriend. Although this is fiction there are a lot of grown men screwing young girls and unfortunately that girl could be their daughter…but folks don’t want to talk about that. They just want to glorify the guy and penalize the woman or the outcome of the situation. I heard people on here so casually say, “Did your daddy hug you too much” only a sick person would insinuate such deviant behavior with a grin on their face.
OK so my point being here. look out for each other, slow down on the judging of others and be the best person you can at ALL times

Stop it with the light skin vs dark skin bit. It’s pretty much the “lowest” cl***** of things to talk about

Rather than everyone praising a depressing film, maybe they should do more charity work in the community and properly help the senario! Charity begins at home, not in the cinema!

Tracy, how can you be mad at folks for praising this film when you haven’t seen it? It covers very disturbing issues but anyone with a semblance of intelligence will walk away from this movie feeling hopeful and proud of the Precious character. For all her disadvantages and abuse, she doesn’t give up and starts discovering that she’s NOT all the things society and her mother have been telling her – she’s not dumb, she’s not worthless, and just maybe she WILL amount to something. I read the book and saw the movie and yes, its sad and hard watching and reading but it also makes you feel good to witness the birth of this girl’s soul and her resilience. No where in the movie does it glorify light skin over dark. It is not airing our dirty laundry And many films have “soft” opens in limited cities when not a lot of theaters want to show this movie, so Just go see for yourself and support Black film so it can get a wider release.

Mock Rock Star….
You live in Atlanta. Of course its sold out.
Atalanta is where Flavor of love is one of the highest rated shows,
Where Real houseives of atlanta are considered upper cl*****.
Where Souja boy sells the most albums.
Atlanta is well known for celebrating complete foolishness and houses the worst the black community has to offer.

Why don’t you go and help the people in your community or the community that is beneath yours instead of concerning yourself of what is going on in my Major city.

@Prestonlite
You sound really ignorant right now. Did you conclude “the lesson of this film” from this 2 minute and 30 second trailer?? You obviously have not read the book “Push” or you would know that Precious’ two children are the product of her being raped by her father, and not by her trying to find love by having babies.
Get it together.

“I hope everyone supports this movie by buying a ticket in a theater and not a bootleg – this is a Black film written, directed and produced by Black people and starring Black people. If it does well at the box office more films “For us, by us” can get made.”
I hear ya, but my state, isn’t even listed. I always support at the theater, it’s my “thing.” However, if they don’t see fit to “select” us, I don’t see a need to support them…at least the bootleggers don’t expect me to drive over 100 miles to see a film….They promote like drug dealers, get us hooked on the trailers so you go thru hoops to get the product.

I really wanted to see this movie this past weekend, not only did it open only 6 theatres in metro ATL, I didn’t live near those 6, however, a girlfriend and I drove to Atlantic Station, Movies ATL and Southlake around 7 to find out that all the shows were sold out! I am happy that the movie grossed 1.8 the first weekend considering it was open in only a few theatres ( I believe only 18 cities got the movie)! I plan to try again this weekend, but I know by Nov. 20 all of us that want to will have seen the movie.

Above all things, this movie shows the viewer that our perceptions of beauty are
distorted from birth. The movie leaves us
with a greater understanding, that what lies inside of every human being, is the true measure of our beauty. Inside this obese
young girl, is a PRECIOUS soul, that in the final *****ysis, comes to realize that she too is beautiful and worthy of respect and a better life. God bless the makers of this
film, for giving us all a better understanding of the indignity and suffering a person can endure, simply because they do not fit the so called
image of outer perfection, ingrained in most of the worlds population, by the media and it’s king and queen makers.
