Health Care Reform Bill is “A Go” with an Abortion Restriction, Moves to Senate

Posted by Bossip Staff

Well it’s about time:

The biggest overhaul of America’s medical system since Medicare took a big step forward Saturday night, narrowly passing the House with a controversial amendment to restrict coverage of abortion. Democrats cheered and high-fived each other in the House chamber after lawmakers voted 220 to 215 to pass the landmark measure at 11:12 p.m. A lone GOPer, Rep. Joseph Cao of Louisiana, backed the bill, while 39 Dems defected.”Oh, what a night!” declared House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who was forced to make major concessions to conservatives, including adding a controversial abortion restriction. “Tonight, in a historic vote, the House of Representatives passed a bill that would finally make real the promise of quality, affordable health care for the American people,” President Obama said after the vote. The bill nearly failed when a deal with conservative Dems collapsed and Pelosi was forced to let them bring up an amendment to restrict abortion coverage. The move enraged liberals, but most agreed to stay onboard and Obama traveled to the House Saturday to seal the deal with a personal plea.

The bill proposes to spend $1.055 trillion to add 36 million Americans to the insurance rolls, largely paid for with a 5.4% surtax on the top 0.3% of earners and cutting Medicare Advantage programs.
A $61 billion GOP substitute bill failed after Democrats mocked it, noting that nonpartisan number crunchers found it did little to help people get insurance. The next step is for the Senate to pass its bill.

“The United States Senate must follow suit and pass its version,” Obama said. “I am absolutely confident it will, and I look forward to signing comprehensive health insurance reform into law by the end of the year.”

They say all of this big spending will hurt my generation and the generation after me the worst.Basically your grandchildern etc etc.. Im only 19 yrs old lol! But what is wrong with the healthcare system we have know?

  11. if there are any people opposed to the u.s. changing our healthcare system, you need to take a long, hard look at the do*****entary “sicko” by mike moore…. i’m sure you will all agree after viewing it that our healthcare system is !#%!# up!!

  12. Tracey

The recession is a joke, people are losing thier jobs and homes, across the world, yet governments can find billions and trillions to give to banks and start up public services!

I think the health bill is a good thing, but please stop spinning the recession story and milking us dry!

  13. Tracey

Better healthcare, than illegal wars, sure Bush spent more in pointless Iraq and Afghan for murder!

  14. charlotte

The only good thing about this is those with existing illness cant be denied coverage. If you cant afford insurance, its going to be worst for you because you’ll be forced to purchase or get fined by the government.

What’s wrong with it, is in it’s current form, it’s unaffordable to most working americans…Now don’t get m wrong, but Obama’s current solution isn’t the answer either. If you really want to fix the health care problem, first we must get rid of the middle man, i.e these carpetbaggers known as these health insurance providers. They’re main reason medical insurance is cannibalizing itself. I had a friend who went to Europe recently and while there had to have an emergency appendectomy – Guess what, it only cost him the equivalent of $188.00 due to Europe’s socialize healthcare system…Now how much do you think it would cost him in America? Y’all got to remember, but when Roosevelt first created the healthcare system in America over 100 years ago, it wasn’t designed for big corporations to profit from. Now we have these health care insurance providers makin’ an obscene amount of profit to the tune of $300 Billion a year! Trust, health care was not created to profit off the american people’s misery. It’s morally unethical and goes against the Hippocratic oath (which in its’ incarnation, didn’t have a provision for health insurance carriers).

  16. Marquis de Sade

*THEY’RE THE MAIN REASON* (Sorry for the typo)

  17. always knew

why are they saying that you can go to jail if you don’t buy health care?

On NPR, KTAR, here in Arizona, they are demanding that all people have health care insurance..Who’s going to be able to afford those huge numbers? Especially, if you have a business, providing health care is going to be astronomical…

Everyone is going to 30 hours and I would like more information, as to how small businesses are expected to shoulder this 500% increase/burden?

I’m REALLY starting to REGRET voting for this guy..

:( Ever since he has come into office, all I have been hit with is fees and increases. I don’t see no CHANGE except, the government stealling all my damn money….. :(

  18. nyuger

healthcare Reform is a great idea.

My uncle had 2 fingers cut off by accident using an electric saw.
    He had no insurance.

The surgeon said it would be $60,000 for the 1st finger and $25,000 for the second and he wanted the money up front.

The surgeon actually said to him, “I’ll give you a minute to decide which finger you want”

ONLY IN AMERICAN THIS BULL HAPPENS.

  19. zeeku

I just watched this on the news yesterday… Syd Australia. I’m from kampala, uganda, lived nairobi and also some other places round the world! GO OBAMA!!! I couldn’t vote but If I could y’all already kno what my vote would have been!

I’m very happy 4 y’all! I’m on a student visa here so I don’t get free public health care but the system is still ok…

Make sure y’all vote him in again! Its funny but… I dare say tha whole black world… well maybe like 90 pct were supporting this guy!

    BRAVO MR OBAMA!!!

  20. DR.FUNK

Health care reform can happen faster & more effectively WITHOUT THE GOVERNMENT GETTING INVOLVED.This is just A BAD IDEA.There’s NO SUCH THING AS FREE HEALTH CARE.We will all be paying HIGHER TAXES for this down the road.Sooner rather than later.

  21. DR.FUNK

    @Marquis de Sade:

Co-Sign.The health insurance industry-as it sits now-has become a de-facto PRIVATE ENTITLEMENT PROGRAM.It has become such for itself…doctors…lawyers…& a whole host of other industries who have ridden this gravy train for the last 50 YEARS.IT IS CLEARLY AS UNSUSTAINABLE AS ANY PUBLIC ENTITLEMENT PROGRAM.Doctors are able to charge such outrageous sums because they know how much of a guaranteed minimum they would be able to get from the insurance entities…AND then charge even more to cover what profit they feel they deserve. This whole crisis issue would correct itself WITHOUT GOVERNMENT INVOLVEMENT within 1 calendar year if people WOULD NOT LOOK TO BIG GOVERNMENT FOR THE ANSWER and SIMPLY STOP PURCHASING HEALTH INSURANCE.The “domino effect” would be that you would see prices for services “correct” to market rates. You would also see insurance companies start competing like television makers to sell you a product that has more features for LESS MONEY.Further you would see the costs for attending medical school drop dramatically as universities realize they could no longer get the wicked DEBT INDUCING MARK-UPS they get for what they teach. It is a better FREE MARKET SOLUTION than letting this president and his BIG GOVERNMENT IS ALWAYS THE ANSWER MENTALITY take us down the road to lower quality health care that we will all end up paying more for.

  22. Ms.EJ

@MARQUIS DE SADE- All the way on point, very true.

  23. Marquis de Sade

I think ultimately, the solution is to put the business of healthcare back into the hands of doctors, and not the bean counters. The government role should be to oversee reasonable price regulations and set aside (at least) 10 to 15% of the annual federal budget to augment medical research, education and salaries for healcare employees (nurses, doctors, etc.). The rest should come from local state government budgets and reasonable out of pocket expense from the patient. This should be an acceptable middle ground that everyone should be able to live with. Unreasonable Capitalistic greed should have no place in regards to healthcare.

  24. white male

I already pay a quarter of my paycheck to the government. How much is it going to be now?

  25. Dajournalist

    NOt so fast.. Take note.

    - Women will not be able to pay for an abortion, even with their own money (under this bill)
    - And the offer a supplemental insurance you can purchase to cover and abortion (Like women plan for that. Yall should take that as an insult)
-THe government also controls your healthcare. That can be a good… and a bad thing.

  26. Dajournalist

I strongly suggest you read the fine print.. before you celebrate. This will have a devestating effect on mid to lower income women.

  27. Marquis de Sade

    Dajournalist

Well at the rate most hospitals’ are being co-opted or out n’ out bought by these Catholic organizations, women will be hard pressed to find any healthcare facility, otherthan a H.E.R medical clinic to have an abortion…But then again, in this day and age, is abortion really necessary unless the pregnancy becomes a life-threatening situation for the mother?

  28. rothschild

I’ve heard conflicting facts. Is this healthcare mandatory? Will you go to jail and be able to move around the “freely” without it? The abortion stip is also crazy. Who insures just in case of abortion. Hmmm smells like “teen spirit”…

  29. Get Real

THIS BILL WILL P***** IN THE SENATE BECAUSE IT IS MAJORITY DEMOCRATIC. I’M SO HAPPY! I WATCHED MY AUNT STRUGGLE TO GET THE APPROPRIATE TREATMENT FOR HER BREAST CANCER AND SHE STUCK IT OUT W/ HER JOB BECAUSE SHE COUDLN’T MAKE A MOVE RISKING NO HEALTH INSURANCE BECAUSE OF A PRE-EXISTING CONDITION. SADLY SHE LOST HER BATTLE BUT THIS HEALTHCARE BATTLE WILL NOT BE LOST. IF THEY HAVE TO TAKE A LITTLE EXTRA OUT OF MY CHECK SO SUE W/ CANCER DOWN THE STREET CAN GET PROPER CARE THEN SO BE IT. TOO MANY AMERICAN’S ARE SO SELFISH! WAIT TILL YOU GET DIAGNOSED AND SEE IF THE SAME FOLKS CRYING ABOUT THE COST NOW WILL BE THERE TO HELP YOU GET TREATMENT. YOU’D BE BETTER OFF DEAD. UNEXCEPTABLE. IT’S TIME FOR US AS AMERICANS TO GET OUR ACT TOGETHER.

  30. how many times do i have to say. health care is not meant for the poor and the have-nots. i seen a cacuasian woman on TV saying. ” why should i pay for their health care”. at these tea party rallys. they are the exact same get togethers that them folks use to have in the south. the basic areas where white power rhetoric is the theme of the day. back in the day they were called ” WHITE CITIZEN COUNCIL” MEETINGS. and there’s john bohener w/ all his wreckless and divisive race code speeches, screaming that this health bill is “taking our {FREEDOMS} away. the man is a mental case. did boehener vote yes for gw bushes “tax cuts” that added 5 TRILLION to the defict and on the books. where was all them tea party fools at then. all them hypocrites need to sit their azz down… corruption runs that congress on both sides.medicare is a corrupt machine in its own right…….

  31. white male

If some person smokes and can’t afford healthcare when they get cancer should other people have to pay for it?

  32. THE ALMIGHTY TRUTH

Do you guys have any idea how much money they are going to take out of your check for this!?

Do you guys realize that WE THE PEOPLE and OUR CHILDREN are going to be paying for this bill?

Did you know with this bill p*****ed the government has the power to deny you medication??

Did you guys even READ THE BILL????????

  33. rothschild ***SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT***

    @THE ALMIGHTY TRUTH

i believe we have a winner!

so basically, we are about to pay these fools to kill us off — either with their janky *****ed meds and vaccines or complete DENIAL.

If they p***** this, it’s basically NWO. They are trying to trick us by pretending that we are following other national models but really, we are about to set a trend with this.

(thank you almighty power for keeping me healthy thus far)

  34. Drandomgirl

Dayum Bossip… I’m disrespected by your quote “It’s about time”. Really? Look, this man has been in office for a year and has done more in that amount of time than most, if not any other U.S president. I mean d@mn, just because he’s a black president, does that mean we have to hold him up to superior standards? How about we say “Thank You” Mr. President.

  35. Drandomgirl

    Listen People,
Our tax payers money have been paying for so much “unecessary” sh*t to date. So why is everybody b*tching about something that helps American People. I am a middle cl***** individual who agrees with this bill because in my opinion it’s the right thing to do for the American people… not just the American people that can afford it. C’mon, do some of you hear yourselves right now.

  36. THE ALMIGHTY TRUTH

    @Drandomgirl

NOTHING FROM THE GOVERNMENT IS FREE.

Its doing way more harm then help. In the bill it states that you HAVE to take their policy if not you will be fine $15,000 a year. The bill also states that you must give up your private health care policy for the public option if not then you are fined another $15,000!

    READ THE BILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  37. Marquis de Sade

    THE ALMIGHTY TRUTH & rothschild

For starters, just ask congress to get rid of all of their porkbarrel spending. That alone will alleviate enough funds to give this health reform a running start, even though I think in its’ current form it’s doomed to fail.

  38. Romy

The Republicans made us pay for the war(s), the Dems want us to pay for healthcare. I rather healthcare. If you’ve ever been faced with a really high hospital bill, you know what I’m saying.

  39. rothschild ***SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT***

Marquis de Sade they are about to enslave us all the more.

  40. DC

You guys do know that this is not the end right? The Senate must now revise and vote on what they want the health care bill to be like and then the President has his say on what it should be like.

Lets not cheer just yet, we all know things tend to get ugly in the senate.

  41. felixxx

haven’t read the bill yet but it sounds like a socialist health care plan in which the govt taxes more in order to have a big pool of funds for healthcare for everyone like a really big insurance company. in a way i do not mind that aspect of it but i don’t like that what i’m hearing is that it is mandatory

  42. GET REAL

WHO GIVES A F*CK IF THEY TAKE MORE OUT OF OUR CHECK! THEY ALREADY TAKING FROM THE MIDDLE CL***** AND POOR ALREADY. AGAIN, UNTIL YOU’VE BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH AN ILLNESS SHUT THE F*CK UP. I HOPE U NEVER HAVE TO BEG FOR *****ISTANCE LIKE MY AUNT DID AND WAS REJECTED. SHE DIED FROM CANCER BECAUSE SHE HAD INADEQUATE HEALTHCARE. THE SYSTEM NEEDS TO BE CHANGED. I PREFER THEY TAKE A LITTLE FROM MY CHECK IF IT WILL SAVE SOMEONE’S LIFE. SOME OF U ARE SO F*CKING SELFISH…WHEN U GET DIAGNOSED DON’T COME BEGGING FOR *****ISTANCE. REMEMBER HOW SELFISH U ARE AND I HOPE THE SYSTEM HAS MERCY ON YOUR SOUL LIKE IT DID FOR MY AUNT.

  43. PrettyGirl08

I’m glad abortion was taken out the bill. Do you all understand the founder or Planner Parenthood Margret Sangler was a racist and she especially hated black people? That’s why Planned Parenthood clinics in the hood do abortions and the ones in the suburbs offer counseling and adoption planning. I’m glad the bill removed abortion subsidies from the pockets of American citizens because there are 101 ways not to get pregnant and only one way to get pregnant. The bill provides coverage for abortions in cases of rape, incest and if the mother’s health is in danger. I shouldn’t have to pay for the reckless behavior of women who choose not to protect themselves, period.

  44. KC7710

GET REAL…that is a true statement…..they try and focus on how much the bill will cost….I say look at what it will save…lives…and money….the only problems repubs. have with it is that most of them and their friends doctors or in the insurance industry….they are worried about their own pockets…..they can’t charge what they want, with no reason anymore…they are selfish….

  45. DR.FUNK

    @PrettyGirl08:

Whether Margaret Sanger was racist or not…Planned Parenthood does good work.(imo) The whole eugenics thing about Sanger was put out there by white social conservatives to scare black folks into thinking GENOCIDE was the ultimate goal of birth control and Planned Parenthood.IT IS NOT.
The *****s perfected jet engines for WWII fighter planes. The same engines that later powered commercial jetliners.Should we stop using them?
I’m no fan of BIG GOVERNMENT health care “reform”…but I have to admit that it was a clever move by the Democrats to sacrifice the abortion option to get the bill p*****ed.This is STILL bad legislation.

  46. love me or hate me!

    PrettyGirl08
I have to agree with you because there are so many young and older female using this as a birthcontrol and it’s horrible. I’m not against abortion, but I also don’t think insurance should cover it.If you want it done then it should be paid for out of your own pocket.Even if you are paying for your own medical insurance don’t mean that you should just be able to take advantage and go down to the clinic every time you make a mistake that you could of very well prevented.Especially if the insurance is covering birth control.

  47. Negative black Oscar coups!

A child from a poor family could get cancer, and get treated, however a smoker could get cancer and get treated.`

I think there are good and bad from this healthcare bill, however, we should be praising God American’s now have a chance to get humane help for health!

No matter what top doctors and dentist will always want to treat those who go private, rather than those who have it for free, there will still be a vast difference in the type of treatment you get and this will also push up the standards for those who pay privately and by insurance.

  48. Sharm85

    Hallelujah!

  49. Lindsey

Great. This is all we need. Now we’re going to be paying for all the dead-beat’s insurance through taxes. Why can’t he just leave well enough alone? This is truly the beginning of the end.

  50. Medical Apartheid

@prettygirl08 I agree 100% w/you about Margret Sanger. A lot of black people don’t realize where abortion clinics began and why. I encourage everyone to read a book called ” Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the Present.” by Harriet Washington MD. It will give you a different perspective on Govt. and Health care.

  51. BLACK-A-RIZZLE (RIFICK)

DID U ALL KNOW THE CHIP WAS A PART OF THIS HEATH CARE BILL? ITS LIKE ON THE LAST PAGE OR SOMETHING! WHILE U ALL ARE CELEBRATING U NEED TO STUDY AND GET UP ON THINGS!

  52. rothschild ***SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT***

This bill starts wiping out the poor first. They have the audacity to want to kill off the elderly who receive social security as well. Read pp. 424-430. I am at loss for words. OMG. They are basically saying if you are ill and elderly, why try and fight it? We don’t need to waste money on keeping another mouth around here to feed who’s just taking up air! Incredible. One of the choices is euthanasia? Well, these are the baby boomers who confusingly witnessed the golden age, civil rights, the drug/sex revolution and the ones responsible for Generation X, so I’m not shocked by these loonies.

  53. rothschild ***SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT***

    @Black-a-rizzle (rifick)

You are sooooooo right. I am pasting it here so all who these socialist who are beginning to like the idea of totalitarianism.

We’re getting the chip in 2012. After that, everyone else is following suit. The only place to run is an uncharted desert island, lol.

Name one government program that is not overbudget and runs efficiently? Now I am supposed to be excited that the government will be in charge of my health care?

I am not happy that the cuts to Medicare Advantage remained in the bill p*****ed by the House. I switched to a Medicare Advantage plan through a private insurer because of the high co-pays and deductibles with the government’s Medicare and the lack of doctors that would accept it. Currently, I review Medicare options available in my area using the zip code search tool at PlanPrescriber.com. There are many choices now for 2010, but with the cuts to Medicare Advantage, I am concerned about the quantity, quality and affordability of Medicare in 2011 and beyond.

Obama and his administration suck. All they want to do is to increase the power of government by bringing it into every aspect of your life. We all are going to pay for this ish with our tax money. They are going to tax the hell out of our paychecks, that’s for sure. And the result is going to be pathetic. Just tell me about a single one government program that succeeded.

Do people in government have medical, accounting, economical degrees? Would you allow some public policies or HR people to run your entire business?
It seems like Obama just want to create some legacy for himself by doing those grand reforms. You need to stop supporting people just because they are black. Just look at Corrine Brown. Who the hell voted for her *ss?
