I am Dominican & I am well aware of my AFRICAN roots. Know my family history, and embrace and am PROUD to be of African descent. As are a majority of Dominicans in the Dominican Republic. Most countries with an extensive slavery history have problems with colorism, it’s emotional and mental and will take many more years to straighten out. Light skin has always been *****ociated with success in life. Thousands of years ago, light skin was seen as a status symbol because if you had money you did not have to toil under the hot sun to make a living, you did not have to till the land. But those with money hired their land out to peasants to grow crops and labour in the fields, while they pursued an education in the hallowed halls of ancient universities and traveled the world. They protected their skin from the elements and in time light skin was seen as the optimal ideal in all societies, it meant you had money, cl***** and higher learning. As bad as this is amongst most caribbean countries, it is most worst in South East Asian countries, especially India where commercials to sell skin bleach are constantly shown on television. But the darker skinned Indians are fighting back. Don’t be too h***** on Sammy, he is a product of his country’s slavery past, things will change eventually.

Dominicans are centuries behind when it comes to accepting/appreciating african heritage. During WWII, their then president invited the jews who were being persecuted to settle the Dominican Republic – not out of morality – but to “whiten” the country. Of all Latin American countries, dominicans are darkest skinned and still have the largest percentage of African descendant and they HATE it. Will do just about anything to change that. They treat Hatians like sh*t mostly for being black skinned. These people have so many names for so many different shades of black, I believe the list makes up most of their dictionary. Back in collegue, my best friend was from the DR, she had so many issues, I had to end the friendship. She’d relaxed her hair and blow dry the life out of it then swear it was “all natural”. She added a weave and agin told me how her hair just grew like that. She’d put on bleaching cream then spend 2 seconds in the sun – why? so she could say that she is dark because she tans. I know. It’s contradictory and makes no sense. Aaaah Gisela, if you’re reading this, I hope you’ve come to accept what a beautiful “mulatta” you are.

He (Sammy Sosa) is from the Dominican Republic and many have a hang up about race. Much like in the past here in the amerikkka light skinned Blacks with semi straight/straight hair married other light skinned semi straight/straight haired Blacks. Other terms used in amerikkka by light skinned Blacks were: “paper bag test”/ “ruler (wooden) test”/ and the “pencil test” (the pencil must be able to p***** through the hair without hanging up.

In the Dominican Republic some go as far as to marry their cousins to try and maintain their european features. If Sosa did bleach his skin he is simply a product of his culture and environment.

I would like to say that not all Dominicans are self-haters but too many are.The Dominicans hate the Haitians who gave us our freedom and that’s shameful.The sad truth is the Haitian and Dominican culture are very similar.I’m glad my family don’t have the self-hatred many Dominicans have.The funny thing thing we are light skinned Dominicans but we are proud of our African and European mix/culture.We embraced both not just the European one.

Unfortunately Dominicans are not the only ones suffering from this sickness.In Asia,countries like India,Philippines etc,even Africa people are doing this.
We can look at Rap videos and see what type of women are being featured in these videos.You have famous Black men like Neyo,Babyface making comments in regard to light skinned being more beautiful.
We can just hope one day people can accept themselves.

I grew up with people telling me how beautiful I am just because I’m light with natural green eyes.

You dont get it… the difference between this is ALL the black people you mentioned have no problem saying, claiming for proactively expressing their blackness. Most love anything blacks or that touches their bloodlines.

The problems is Dominicans deny being black even if they look like Wesley Snipes and seperate from blacks. Blacks consider most Dominicans family but Dominicans are too ashamed of their black roots to show love for their own kind enslaved in another region.

Self hatred is in all races, I am from Trinidad, I have family who I think is light and they wished they were lighter. I have had American blacks hate on me because of my skin complexion.
I am in the Middle East and I know they have color issues with themselves,
