Kareem Abdul Jabbar told the world today that he has been living with Leukemia for some time now:

Basketball great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar said today he had been living with leukemia for nearly a year but no longer considered the disease a death sentence. Abdul-Jabbar, 62, told “Good Morning America” that he’d been diagnosed in December with Philadelphia chromosome-positive chronic myeloid leukemia, or PH+CML, a rare cancer of the blood and bone marrow. “I heard the word ‘leukemia,’ and I thought this was definitely a death sentence,” Abdul-Jabbar said.

Kareem has also represented for the Muslim community with class and dignity. Get well…

My thoughts and prayers are with him. God may not always provide us with the answers we want but he does give us the strength we need. A great man with an even greater passion for basketball. A positive attitude is half the battle

He will be fine, this happens to a lot of people. He needs to go get treatment in Germany and not the USA since USA doctors are always using their patients as test dummies using all types of trial treatments for their cancer patients.

My prayers are with you Kareem.
You always handled yourself with class and dignity
on and off the court. Your book Brothers in Arms is a must read. America could use more men like you, and the WBA could use shorts like those.

YOU ARE IN OUR PRAYERS. I HAVE ALWAYS FELT LIKE YOU WERE A CLASS ACT. IF MORE YOUNG BM WOULD LOOK UP TO YOU AS A ROLE MODEL WE WOULD NOT BE HAVING THE PROBLEMS THAT WE ARE HAVING.

Damn I hate to hear this. My ex husband died of this awful disease even though he put up a brave fight. My prayers are with Kareem. Stay strong!!

  • Nikeya

PLEASE DO NOT SAY THAT YOU FEEL SORRY FOR HIM OR ARE SADDENED BY HIS DIAGNOSIS. I AM A 33 YR OLD BLACK WOMAN WHO IS A WIFE AND MOTHER, AND HAVE THE SAME TYPE OF CANCER. CML IS A TREATABLE FORM OF CANCER AND WITH JUST A PILL A DAY, I HAVE BEEN IN REMISSION FOR 3 YEARS, EVEN THOUGH I STILL HAVE THE CANCER..THIS IS NOT A DEATH SENTENCE SO NO NEED TO FEEL SORRY FOR HIM. I HAD NO CHEMO, NEVER HOSPITALIZED, AND CONTINUE TO MODEL AND DO MY DAY JOB AS A THERAPIST…HE TAKES THE SAME PILL I DO. NO NEED FOR THE SAD COMMENTS! LIVE EACH DAY TO THE FULLEST PEOPLE!!

  • Nikeya

PLEASE EDUCATE YOURSELF ABOUT THIS TYPE OF LEUKEMIA BEFORE POSTING
