SMH: Columbia Professor Socks Up White Lady Over A Race Discussion

This Columbia professor, Lionel “Mack” McIntyre, socked up a fellow Columbia employee, who just so happens to be a white woman, for not doing enough about white privilege:
A prominent Columbia architecture professor punched a female university employee in the face at a Harlem bar during a heated argument about race relations, cops said yesterday. Police busted Lionel McIntyre, 59, for assault yesterday after his bruised victim, Camille Davis, filed charges. McIntyre and Davis, who works as a production manager in the school’s theater department, are both regulars at Toast, a popular university bar on Broadway and 125th Street, sources said.
The professor, who is black, had been engaged in a fiery discussion about…“white privilege” with Davis, who is white, and another male regular, who is also white, Friday night at 10:30 when fists started flying, patrons said. McIntyre, who is known as “Mac” at the bar, shoved Davis, and when the other patron and a bar employee tried to break it up, the prof slugged Davis in the face, witnesses said. “The punch was so loud, the kitchen workers in the back heard it over all the noise,” bar back Richie Velez, 28, told The Post. “I was on my way over when he punched Camille and she fell on top of me.”
The other patron involved in the dispute said McIntyre then took a swing at him after he yelled, “You don’t hit a woman!” “He knocked the glasses right off my face,” said the man, who would only give his first name as “Shannon.” “The punch came out of nowhere. Mac was talking to us about white privilege and what I was doing about it — apparently I wasn’t doing enough.”
McIntyre had squabbled with Davis several weeks earlier over issues involving race, witnesses said. As soon as the professor threw the punch Friday, server Rob Dalton and another employee tossed him out. “It was a real sucker punch,” Dalton said. “Camille’s a great lady, always nice to everybody, and doesn’t deserve anything like this.” Davis was spotted wearing sunglasses yesterday to conceal the black eye. Reached at her Columbia office, she declined to comment on the alleged attack. McIntyre was released without bail at his arraignment last night.

How unfortunate! I hope that this isn’t twisted in the media as some affirmative action gone awry discussion (knowing in my heart that it will be). Architecture is another one of those fields that doesn’t attract people of color as much as it should, at least not here in the state. Perhaps that was why he was so bent out of shape. But hitting a WHITE WOMAN in PUBLIC, he should lose his career for the sheer stupidity of that action. There is NO WAY he’s going to recover from this.

Shame on him, he needs to be taught to keep his hands to himself, now all that other stuff about the punch was so loud, the people in the kitchen heard it, is just fluff. The fact is that this man got soo mad that he actually raised his fist to punch this lady. If being in a discussion will make you get this upset, then you aught not be in the discussion and walk away, instead of ended up in jail. This is ridiculous.

I don’t understand his frustration, he is a professor, not some angry black bad tempered artist.
His a professor, who must have witnessed real racism in his younger days, and broke down boundaries and stereo types when he gained his academic education and status in life.
He, as an intelligent man, should have seen and heard it all before already and should have know the differences in right and wrong. To lay a hand on a woman is just totally wrong, not only will this man find himself out of work, and striped off his title he will find himself banged up in jail.
This lady could have been provoking him in to a violent act, but he just should not have taken the bait!
I hope millions of young black males see this case as an example and know where they shouldnt ever go.

I thought it was understood that, when you go out drinking with “nice” white folks, the liquor will drastically lower their inhibitions and the racism that was previously hidden beneath the surface will come bubbling up. It is better to just sit back and listen and REALLY get to know what is on their minds. If you know you can’t calmly and rationally handle whatever ignorance will come out of their mouths, just don’t go.
I would especially expect an educated black man who is 59 years of age to know this and not allow himself to get baited and caught up in a physical altercation over this type of “discussion”.

I recall getting into some heated discussions about OJ at Columbia. Race is an issue with which you have to tread very carefully when discussing it with certain individuals.

One Friday, after work a few months ago, a friend and I decided to meet up for happy hour at a restaurant in Dupont Circle. We were enjoying ourselves, having drinks and appetizers, when a white woman came up to the bar and asked us if it was “black night” because all the patrons there were African American (I hadn’t noticed until she pointed it out). Well, the bartender (a brother) and the two of us exchanged surprised looks, but I decided to employ some sarcasm and told her that the bartender had sent all of us evites for the evening, but our “black” turn at the bar was ending. She proceeded to tell us that she hadn’t been to offend us, she had black friends, blah, blah, blah. But, during it all, we remained composed. The manager — who was familiar with us because it’s one of our favorite happy hour spots — later approached us and apologized profusely for the customer’s behavior.
For an Ivy League cat, this dude is really an idiot. Even Tyrone from down the block knows you can’t throw haymakers at white women in public.

One thing I know is that one can never discount the effects of alcohol, especially when emotions are involved.

I’m a black female, Ivy educated neighbor (in a Columbia faculty residence) of the professor. He is not an Uncle Tom. He’s not a raving lunatic with anger issues. If you can walk in his shoes, as I do every day, you know that white people can take you there. Did I ever in my wildest dreams think that I’d key the car of this white woman who had the audacity to get into my face and tell me that I was a racist because of a similar white privilege discussion.
If people responding wanted to do something constructive, they would get the facts and plan to support the professor in criminal court. Anybody who’s black, well-educated and lives in NYC (or even works) among white folks knows the stress we’re forced to deal with on a regular basis.

I can’t even remember the last time I’ve heard a story of a white man committing an act of violence against a black woman. The reverse, however, is a common occurence. Black-on-white rape, for example, is far, far more common than the reverse, which almost never happens anymore. I don’t know how far you’d have to go back. Todya white people on average are just better human beings it seems.
