Spike Lee 521

We can always count on Spike to keep it real:

“Spike Lee has launched a bitter attack on fellow filmmaker Clint Eastwood for failing to include black soldiers in his films about the Battle of Iwo Jima.

The Malcolm X director insists African-American soldiers should have been included in Eastwood’s Flags Of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima since hundreds took part in the 1945 battle for the Japanese island.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday at the Cannes Film Festival in France, Lee said, ‘There were many African-Americans who survived that war and who were upset at Clint for not having one (in the films). That was his version: the negro soldier did not exist. I have a different version.’”

Kudos to Spike for calling out Clint on that wack ish. SMH.

    @ annoying us!

Why would he get over it?!

This is a film about a part of your history and you are happy to be “forgotten”!

wow! Should i remind you that in 1945 , black were not even considered as citizen yet but white people were happy to put our people on the front row and you want to get over it?? African people participate to the second war too for the sake of France! and we have to fight to get the recognition of France years after that! It was not our war in first place!

  • Valenne

They only know us when they need us!!

  • CJ

Cause knowbody wants to see black ignorant soldiers askin for fried chicken in the heat of battle.

    Sincerely,

  • bootlegger

    LMAO @CJ!

  • Southern Belle 225

Good for calling him out Spike. But that was a long dry ass movie anyways so I’m sure not alot of blacks saw it. Who cares about Clint Eastwood’s vision of a war he wasn’t even in (or was he? he is kind of old…”snickering”!!).

  • Aoki Lee

Spike is absolutely right! Clint is not the only one to diss black folks…Woody Allen makes movies in & about NYC living & never ever never had any black folks in his movies too!

But as soon as Spike, John Singleton ect produce & direct their own movies they always gotta include the white or latina in somewhere so I aint really riding with Spike on this either!

What we need are some black female writer producers to show these fools what’s really up!

  • kigali

    Good ol’ Spike.

  • IN GHETTO NEWS…

CJ STANDS FOR CRACKMETH JACKASS…EXCUSE THIS FOOL THAT WAS BORN OF A SWINEPIG…THE MF KNOWS HE WILL SELL HIS ASS FOR A BUCKET OF CHICKEN………………………………………………ASSWIPE

  • Valenne

I think spike lee is trying to be fair! When you presents historic facts, i think it is really essential to be objective and not giving your version! At the end of the day, it would still be your version but at least, you will have evidences to prove that your right! i am not mad at him for including white , italian and latinos in his movies because that is what we see everyday!

  • Valenne

    present*

  • glok9n

FUK SPIKE LEE, WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME HE MADE A MOVIE WITH BLKS? LIL HYPOCRITE ASS NIGGR?

  • jah jah

…and thats why i love spike!

  • Tiger

    @Southern Belle

Clint served in the Us Army during the Korean war in The states. Being born in May 31,1930; he’s too young to have served in WW2. Happy Birthday next week Clint!

  • nica

The comment would have meant more if he had said it back in 2006 when both films came out. Why now?

  • nica

Plus, I wonder if it is/was a real issue to other black people. Did many black people know this fact? How many cared? How many watched both movies either at the theater or on DVD?

  • WHY

spike lee is just mouthing off he makes very good movies clint e makes his own movies too if you don’t like clint e don’t pay to see him$$$stop the bickering make your own movies and tell the truth

  • truth

There were a whole host of ethnicities who fought. Black, Latinos, American Indians…the list goes on and on. Were they all represented as well? Do African-Americans seriously think the world revolves around how they are portrayed?

Instead of being divisive and worrying about why blacks weren’t involved, why not be inclusive and worry about the lack of minorities as a whole and why they aren’t featured enough?

  • CJ

Dag Ghetto Newz why you gotta carry me like that. My bad if my comment offended you! It really not that serious though

  • Valenne

i don’t think we should care about the other ethnicities! jewish don’t care about the other people and take care of their own and they legitimitate that by their history! OBAM would have to because he is going to be president of a nation! But as a community, we have lots of things going on and we are kinda low compared to the others and they sure don’t include us!

  • I’m Just Me

WTF is clint eastwood thinking with his old ugly @$$? He needs to sit his ho @$$ down. Blacks fought in every war this country has fought since its existence.

  • jojo

this nig! if you wanna have a war movie with black cats in it make it your damn self (lil midget crybaby)

  • bet

Spike, please give it a rest. The overwhelming racism in Hollywood is apparent to everyone. Don’t single out Clint Eastwood. He has done great work with Morgan Freeman.

  • Bohwe

He’s a director, why didn’t he create a film about WWII, which included every ethnic group?

Spike Lee is upset with Eastwood, yet he totally ruined Malcom X lifestory. He focused on the rhetoric and imagery and controversy of X’s life, yet failed to go into any depth of X’s real accomplishments. Such as: the fact that Malcom went to Africa and help create the original African Union. Lee failed to bring any real depth to X’s career and life, yet he wants to go after Eastwood for the lack of black faces. Hollywood is complicated, noone know the reason why black faces were omitted.

  • Wanjiru

    …Spike is 100% correct…

…I live in Carmel, CA where Clint resides as well, he used to be mayor of the city once upon a time…anyways, he is a bigot there too and has always been…nothing new…next!

  • Brie

But Clint Eastwood use to STAND OUT in his day for always having a SIGNIFICANT black character in all of his movies… do you think he really purposely decided to leave one out?

I mean, could it be possible he didn’t even think about it? …idk- that would warrant a bit of investigation. Unless what people are saying is that film makers are now OBLIGATED to diversify their casts racially…

  • Blue Eyed Angel

Spike is right..If you have a war with other races included..YOU NEED TO SHOW IT in the movie, because it’s FACT. If you don’t show it..you aren’t being FACT BASED…And then it becomes fictional…The war wasn’t fictional, so it should be portrayed correctly.

  • HereIambaby

He is a great black man. Love him very much. Lots of my online friends on ~~blackcentur y. c om ~~love him too. You can share your ideas with them if you want. It is a servious interracial dating service.

  • Tiger

    @Blue eyed angel & others

Folks this is getting silly. The Film is based on a book about The men who raised the Flag on Iwo Jima. Not about the Thousands of sailors and Marines. Letters is a follow up film from the Japanes view. If we realy want to talk facts? Prior to 1942 were No black Marines at all. By the time of the battle the 10,000 or so in the Corps were mostly in two defence units or used as support guys off loading supplies & such. So in reality there were few there in overall number & most were behind the line and on the beach. Spike Lee’s comments are misguided and wrong. He wishes he had even one of Clint’s Oscars. Try googling: Montford point marines for the story of the first blacks in the USMC.

THANK YOU SPIKE for speaking your mind , that’s what makes u superior.love you, love you, love you to death from the day i read- Spike Lee a black film producer that is now over 19/20 years ago or more.

those stupied creatures are ruled by the media and they swallow what is thrown at them.i have no idea when they’ll wake up and say that is not wright when they see the wrong thing. they think they are accepted if they smile and said it is only an art. damn no, it is an insult..

unless we challenge the wrong doer they’ll continue their mistake and in near future they,ll teach the next generation all lies and deceit.

lets say, if no one challenges them, at this stage they think and believe they are the new god-next thing you read is just an example, Ms clint eastsand has written a book about american independent war which she herself took part so,it is best reference for secondary schools & the kids can see it in dvd as well. there we go the children are learning all lies and respect Ms east… WHO ….

  • Neo-Geo

    @ Valenne

    I agree with you 100%.

  • Here We Go Again

Why does everything have to be black, black, black? What about the Indians, Asians and Hispanics?

  • Spike Dumbee

Veteran actor and director Clint Eastwood rejected criticism from fellow U.S. director Spike Lee that his films “Flags of Our Fathers” and “Letters from Iwo Jima” failed to recognize the role of African-American soldiers.

In an interview with Germany’s Focus magazine, Eastwood said it was nonsense to suggest he had “erased the role of black GIs from history”. He said there were no Afro-Americans in those films because there were no Afro-American soldiers involved.

“Does he know anything about American history?” Eastwood told Focus when asked about Lee’s criticism. “The U.S. military was segregated til the Korean War, and the blacks in World War Two were totally segregated. The only black battalion on Iwo Jima was a small munitions supply unit that came to the beach.

“The story was about the men who raised the flag and we can’t make them black if they were not there. So tell him: Why don’t you go back and study your history and stop mouthing off!”

  • Rena

African Americans should not be surprised that white folks try to pretend that we didn’t do our part to help this nation become what it is today. For those white people out there saying that we should stop complaining or “get over it” we wouldn’t have to comment about it if white America would stop pretending its okay to write us out of history books…we wouldn’t have to bring up race if you acknowledge that there black troops in World War II fighting for a country that didn’t diva d**mn about them.

But its cool. Spike go ahead and do your own thing. Make a movie about US and forget the rest!!!!
