Sammy “Soft-White” has finally come clean about his skin whitening:

Speaking publicly for the first time since photos of him from a recent musical awards ceremony were published on the Internet, Sosa said that the skin lightening is the result of the use of a facial cosmetic cream.

“It’s a bleaching cream that I apply before going to bed and whitens my skin some,” said the former slugger during the “Primer Impacto” program at the Univision Spanish network.

“It’s a cream that I have, that I use to soften [my skin], but has bleached me some. I’m not a racist, I live my life happily,” said a smiling Sosa during the interview.

The photo that has caused such turmoil was taken during the Grammy Latino Awards ceremony held last week in Las Vegas. It showed an extremely pale, smiling Sosa accompanied by his wife Sonia. The photo, distributed very quickly throughout Spanish- and English-language Web sites, caused speculation that Sosa was sick and quickly found its way to gossip-related sites.

Well, that bleaching cream worked its butt off on Sammy’s face. He looks like Ricky Ricardo now. SMH@ self-hatred and mutilation.

  • kandykane

first! and the green contacts top it all off….he’s a self hater.

  • marteaus

    thats sad….

  • Brown like Viola

    1st.

    WOW.

    SMH.

  • monique

First…at least he has admitted it, but now he sees that nobody is feeling this change, so he should revert back to the way he used to look. Ditch the perm, the bleach, and the contacts. That was so the 90s anyway. Let it go and love your African roots, Sammy. You only are making people pity and think about how pathetic you are to be so old and yet so dumb.

  • drenk

BASURA!!!! SO WHAT THE CREAM DID THAT TO HIS HAIR ALSO AND GAVE HIM CONTACTS!?!?!?!

  • Janae

    Thanks for being honest, Sammy.

  • chaka1

    That’s an amazing transformation.

  • sayWHAT!!

    ricky ricardo….LOL

  • JUDY

Sammy looks effin crazy and he needs to get his color back. Every time I see this picture I just shake my head.

  • justme

    5th?

  • MizASterling

At least he’s honest, but he needs to come correct and admit that he rubs that mess all OVA his body, cause his ears and hands are the same colour as his face, and noones body and face are the same colour. Sorry. Just doesn’t happen.

  • justme

Damn his wife could’ve told him. Your starting to look like MJ son..come on son

  • GET REAL

We can talk bad about him but if he were to name the cream it would sell out in black neighborhoods.

  • pynklyzurd14

& btw, the reporter had asked him if everything was “even” if you catch my drift. HILARIOUS!!!!

  • lawd da mercy

euro-trash look is what Sammy is checkin for?

Go on Sammy get white skin-ed.

  • Nique

Everytime I see that pic it scares me..

    SMH

  • Shay

Glad he finally admited it because his first excuse was lame. Some of those creams cause cancer.

  • always knew

with his lying behind, like nobody couldn’t tell…

Why do blk people hate themselves so much?

    Yeah, I know, he’s not blk– :) He’s Dominican..

  • kerry

    mm hmmm

  • Ms.EJ

This is just sad on so many levels, it really is. *sigh* This is no surprise that indeed he was bleaching no if ands or buts about it. SMH. Did he not think people were going to question what happened? Also, I would be terrified of the side effects he might suffer from this down the line.

  • http://www.shekeyultd.com SoCultural

I’m in utter disbelief. For him, reality is being someone or something that he never was. If it makes him happy and doesn’t hurt anyone, I’m all for it. But it’s not to say I don’t get a good laugh from it.

    Stay positive, Stay conscious

  • Caramel Cat

I don’t care what anyone says, skin bleaching does not look natural. It makes your skin look sick and pale and sometimes blotchy. I will never understand people using cream to lighten their skin, accept who you are and love the skin you are in!

I LIKE THE WAY I LOOK. THIS IS THE WAY GOD MADE ME.

    I’M NOT CHANGING FOR NOBODY… :)

I don’t care if very las blk person alive go buy that crap, Iam not getting skin cancer behind some stupid pill to be pale. I do not want to ‘fit’ in…

If they don’t like me the way I am, that’s THEIR problem…NEXT! :)

  • jazzyjayda

yet he still making excuses saying its for “softing” his skin.
Well use some lotion if you wanted your skin to be soft. lying a s s..

yooooo ur a fool but that pic really disturbs me that shiit is scary uhhh.

  • Lady Architect (All In What You Do)

Sammy you didn’t need to admit…we all knew buddy…you had to admit it to yourself…

  • http://bossip.com This some Shhh…

Whatever helps him sleep at night.

  • Ms.EJ

Just a thought…but I wonder how his parents feela about this. If my child completely changed her complexion it would break my heart. It would make me think that I did not do my part, that I did not tell her enough how beautiful she is.

  • Negroplease!

Typical Self Hating Dominican!! No surprise there.

  • Candy Cane

Hmmm….. where’s all the stupid people who used every excuse in the book to defend him. Oh he’s Dominician and their so proud of their culture they would never do that…. BULLSH*T. Oh it’s just the cammara lighting…. BULLSH*T

I’m soooo glad he admitted it. I knew it and now people can shut up thinking people dont have issues and people dont bleach their skin. THEY DO!

Come on Kelly Roland, your next…. ADMIT IT already honey.

  • Candy Cane

    Oh and beyond bleaching…..

Dont let me get started on them fugly eye contacts, and that wack azz perm.

Somebody need to slap this fool…. SMH…. HARD

  • Caramel Cat

if folks who did this knew how retarted they looked they simply just wouldn’t do it. it is obvious when someone is dark and they are bleaching their skin, you don’t appear to be light skinned, you appear as though something is totally wrong with your skin…why can’t people see this?

  • Luvya

@Candy Cane, sad but it’s true.

  • Aunt Viv

His face looks like he’s been using the bootleg Ambi that’s sold in alleys in other countries. Between his skin, his bad S-curl and his contacts, I feel like I’m looking at the clown performing at my goddaughter’s 5th grade Halloween party.
    SMH @ his self-hating behind…

  • 6 Figgaz

“Hydroquinone is one of the most common ingredients that are used in the formulation of face whitening creams. This chemical has proven to inhibit the effects of melanin, thus causing the skin to whiten from its natural color. But, the worse part is that hydroquinone is a skin irritant, which after prolonged usage can increase the chances of causing skin cancer.”

    Gnarly sh*t. Good luck Sosa…

  • Man Foolie

“Lightens my skin some…” He is lying, look at his ears and the sides of his kneck. He is using those damn lightening pills that lighten the whole body. but he is so extreme I think he probably uses cremes too. Look at him he is sooooo happy to me white, he thinks he looks good but he looks raw and scary

  • lt

I knew he was using something. It’s ashamed that even in other cutlures the darker your skin is, it’s consider to be a bad thing.

  • JUDY

There are plenty of skin whitners and bleaching cream available in the black community already but most of us accpet our natural hues(it’s the rest of the world who doesnt) so I doubt this cream would be any different. If you really want to get lighter all you have to do is go visit your local dermatologist……its really no secret.

  • http://BOSSIP Damn D

So what he is saying is…. that he bleaches his face, hand, ears, and neck? Because It seem as if his whole body is bleached. He has even gone as far as to straighten his hair! C’mon Sosa tell the truth! Face cream is not going to do all that.

  • I’m Just Me: Keeping It Real Since 1983

usually I would ride with my Dominican brother….but even I can’t defend him on this nonsense…

  • num1dominicano

I just don’t get the point…everybody knows him as black @ss Sammy Sosa…so why change now when he’s already been in the spotlight for years as black @ss Sammy Sosa….

  • KEYSHA LIKES IT HOT

    He look sick 1

  • Shar N

    A DAMN SHAME!

  • a black man

americans are the last ones to talk about self hate LoL Some of you(mostly all) talk badly about About black africans and calls them blue, dark, mandingo

  • Candy Cane

    @num1dominicano

well maybe if you didnt mention his orginal skin tone in such a derogatory way… there would be less of this b.s.

“black azz sammy sosa”…. you white looking domicians kill me. You are the ones who ridicule the darker ones (who usually look better) because of your own lack of melanin. He should have been proud of his apperance, but probably dealing with issues that stemm from his child hood.

Sammy Sosa…. You really need to stop… seriously. You see how stupid MJ looked… why follow the madness.

  • Ummmmmm….

His ears and neck also look white….where else you putting this cream Sammy?

  • Candy Cane

    @ a black man

I agree. It is so stupid how Black americans talk so bad about Black Africans. Especially when one is the mutant version of the other. How can you hate on what your suppose to look like in the first place.

Never understood that. It’s self hate as well.

  • Candy Cane

smh @ his wife seeming to be cool with it.

  • Wenzel Dashington (aka Mr. Sterling Cooper)

    Twilight looking ass.

  • drenk

@ Candy Cane a black man

ive also heard africans tear into black americans with all the stereotypes that white people use. BUT i dont let a FEW ignorant people change my beliefs about a whole group

  • Candy Cane

    @drenk

I partically agree with that too. But in my experience when it comes apperance wise it’s the Black americans that ALWAYS talk about how dark and ugly Black Africans are (which I completely disagree with).

I’ve heard Black africans rant more on society issues, education, socialism, black communities..etc.

African features are not welcomed in America. And Black americans go right along for the ride.

  • chaka1

blah blah blah…I know I hate myself and black people blah blah blah…

Sammy has had issues with his skin and acne. I first thought it was from the steroids. Some treatments available to even out your tone will lighten your skin at the same time.

    The contacts are killing me.

My boyfriend who is Dominican says everyone is cracking up back on the Island.

  • Aimee

He confessed about the lightening cream! But what about those contact lenses????? ‘He’s on a mission to appear more white but we all know you Sosa

  • guereallalegal

Now he just has to worry about skin cancer and melanomas and premature aging like the rest of the Cave-people. I thank god everyday that I am BLACK.

  • Candy Cane

    @lulu27

I agree. I was responding to another comment in regards to black americans, but black need to realize that black people are all over the place. We speak different languages and live in different places. Dominicans are some of the worst. You can have a afro-cuban who looks completely african, but will not say so. They so busy claiming Dominican,Cuban, etc. because it sounds better than saying “Black”… To them, they need to physc themselves out.

I dont… I’m black in every sense of the word. I dont see a problem AT ALL with being black. If anything, it’s a gift.

    Bleaching black skin is disgusting.

  • cornbread

Whata sad world we live in nobodys happy with what GOD has given them..I’m going to pray for sammy say it ain’t so sosa, cmon sammy whyyyyyyyyy? don’t do this to yourself…

  • http://www.bossip.com Re

Sammy is still trying to save face. Notice he said it was a cosmetic skin cream that just happened to bleach his skin…like it was an accident.

Just because he admitted it doesn’t make it right. If Sosa wants to look like Count Dracula, let him go on bout his business, no need to have him running around trying to justify his hatred with lies for us citizens.

  • Butterscotch™

    @justme

“Damn his wife could’ve told him.”

Come on…you KNOW his wife is stroking that ego and making him think he looks amazing. It’s the difference between being honest with your spouse and just agreeing with everything they say. As my aunt has said, “if you are married and never disagree on anything, one of you is a fool.”

  • Aunt Viv

LOL @ Re for “Count Dracula”. I see the resemblance now!!

  • boss me

how do u explain the green eyes and the straight hair??

  • http://bossip bb

At this point the opinion of Black Americans on African features and skin hue is hardly relevant

Most Africans marry their fellow country man and are over there to make money and give back

This will only become an issue if Black Americans can stop Africans from pursing and education, getting jobs and starting businesses because of their features and skin hue

Since they are hardly in the position to do that then their opinion of African features and skin hue only impacts the African American community

Each group appears to have their own reasons for shunning each other and when it comes to Africans, features and skin tone is on the bottom of the list

If Black Americans feel that their lighter skin makes them more accomplished then it is better to leave them in this state of paranoid delusion, especially since there are actually light skinned Africans who were able to acquire this feature without having to leave the continent

  • STEFANY

    HE LOOKS CREEPY AS HELL!!

    @Judy & Always Knew…..

ARE U KIDDING ME???? Skin bleaching creams is a billion dollar a year industry. You have all these differernt creams making $$$$ but if Sammy was to actually name the one he used, it would sell out. Oh, and since when did we start accepting our natural beauty AS A RACE. Maybe u have. I am looking around my office of 30 women right now. 21 are black. More than half have on a ponytail, braids, weaves or wig. You have 2 Korean beauty supply stores for every half mile here in Atl. Last time I went out all I saw was lace fronts.

  • Redbone_Darkbutt_Black_White (It’s just coochie)

I don’t know why the same people who come on this blog and try to write one half of the black race out of humanity (“black men ain’t s—t” …. “black women are all (fill in the blank)”….), would then denigrate this guy.

He’s just taking your sentiments to their logical conclusion. Blacks are such hypocrites.

  • Laurie Farmer

    Too many African-Americans are hypocrites.

How is Sammy bleaching his skin different from many of you African-Americans hatred for dark skin and your obessions with “good hair” and “light_skinnedness” – by marrying “white” ?

  • Ms. Littlejohn

I don’t know… something else is different… His eyes and chin ain’t looking right. He was so handsome too! Weirdo now…

  • Laurie Farmer

Sammy & Michael Jackson did what MOST African-Americans would do If they had the MONEY, POWER and CHUTZPAH.

Many of you are not Black and Proud, but Black and Ashamed.

  • Laurie Farmer

Laurie Farmer is just keeping it Realzyyyyyyy.

You feel me to the weezyyyyyyyyy.

  • Candy Cane

lace-fronts are destroying are black communities at an alarming rate.

Question: why are black women so afraid of kinky hair? I have friends I’ve known over 5 years and have NEVER seen their real hair. They take that mess down, and have it back up faster than a new walmart.

  • simi.comingtoamerica

    TO num1dominicano:

YOUR PEOPLE CALL HIM BLACK@ASS SAMMYSOSA???? WHY NOT JUST SAMMY SOSA. DAMN SOME OF YOU F** LATINOS ARE RACIST. YOU WILL SALE YOUR SOUL NOT TO BE BLACK. BLACK IS BEAUTIFUL. SAY IT LOUD, I’M BLACK AND I’M PROUD !!!!!! (FUTURE OPRAHS, OBAMAS,MANDELAS,GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU WHO LOVE WHO YOU ARE, BEAUTIFUL BLACK ANGELS !!!)

  • Candy Cane

    lol@ Laurie Farmer

not me, I love being black. But I must say when your proud of being black it’s hard to hang around “regular” blacks because they dont understand you. Always talking about “keeping it real”…. yea right… lmao

  • Laurie Farmer

I have nothing against Blacks who love themselves and their heritage.

It is the self-hating ones that crack me up, unfortunately I think most Black fall in that category.

  • Candy Cane

    @Laurie Farmer

    couldnt agree more. so true.

  • Laurie Farmer

    @Candy Cane

    Much Respect to you.

There is something irresistably attractive about a person who loves himself or herself (White or Black) that no amount of skin-lightening cream, “good hair” or irrelevant claim about having white or indian ancestors 400 years ago can hold a candle to.

  • yoadrian29

those lips are still ours lol

  • Candy Cane

    @Laurie Farmer

sadly, we are far and very few in between. I get “looks” because I wear my own hair, which is odd because their the ones with the fake b.s. on their skulls. I like what God gave me, wouldnt trade it for nothing.

It’s really a deep issue that they will not accept. How many times have I heard a black women tell me they wear weave because it’s hard to deal with natural hair and it faster and all that other bullsh*t. so that excuses you to go YEARS and DECADES without showing your own hair. They say “it’s just hair” well then that’s more reason to wear your own. IT’S FREE DUMMIES, lol.

those ugly, unrealistic wigs and weaves cost alot of money. so stupid to me. I’m not talking about the ones who do it sometimes. I’m talking about 90% of black women who can breathe without it.

  • Pray ni%%a, Pray!

    Those Dominicans hate being black!!!

  • Candy Cane

the skin is bad enough…his initial statement was that he was concerned about the effects of the sun on his then dark brown skin he started using a skin rejuvination cream….yeah right….but why the perm and green eyes…..he needs to be proud of his Dominican/African roots

  • deesac

This is so ridiculous, most of the white girls that I smash love the tone and texture of our black skin. So why would I wanna be white, I would not be able to get that many white girls anymore. I would be stuck smashing sista’s YUCK!

  • copelli21

Wow, he needs to stop using that cream, because he looks nazty.

And what is with the conked hair and contacts?

Can we say identity crisis, Sammy?

  • Candy Cane

    smh@ deesac

    you worst then sammy.

  • Anon3

    @ deesac….

go ahead and get you some skin rejuvination cream like Sammy…nothing worse than a self hating negro

  • Kigali (Marriage before carriage)

    @Candy Cane,

“You can have a afro-cuban who looks completely african, but will not say so. They so busy claiming Dominican,Cuban, etc. because it sounds better than saying “Black”…”

How can you look completely African? They dont look like Somalis. They dont look like they are from souther Sudan, they dont look like they are South African. Maybe its you who have a problem with definitions. These people should claim they are Cuban or Dominican because that is the country they or their parents are from. It makes far more sense than saying black because as you know, “black” is dam near meaningless as an cultural, and social designation.

  • Tony Redds

Sometimes Dominicans can be really color struck with themselves and others just like Black American people…smh

  • Acacia

And just to think, his publicist said and I quote He is not trying to be like Michael Jackson…..

    Just about a DAMN lie…

CHUUU’CH it’s time to take up the collection!!!!

  • Kigali (Marriage before carriage)

    @Candy Cane,

Lastly Europeans dont even use white. They always use their nationalities because white doesnt mean anything if you are British speak English, a member of the Church of England or if you are Italian, Catholic and speak Italian.

  • Ok People

@Get Real, historically African men and women express ourselves through out hair, body, and attire. This is a part of who we are. We need to separate that expression from deliberately trying to appear caucasion. there is nothing wrong with braids, wigs, weaves there is a big difference between the average sista with a weave and what Lil Kim, Michael, and Sosa did to themselves.

  • Kigali (Marriage before carriage)

    @bb,

You make an interesting point. The idea of blackness is a very recent WESTERN phenomena. What does blackness mean on a continent like African when everyone is technically black but there are so many ethnicities, languages, religions, etc. The only reason why black Americans designate themselves as black or have been designated as such is because they live in a predominately white country. How do you distinguish between an Igbo and a Youraba, and a Fulani, or a Hausa? Thats who they are and they have been that longer than they have been “black.” Blackness is a bit of a fiction.

  • Mona

I love the skin I’m in- you see it first before you see me; treat me bad if you want to, I love my skin, it feels good because its an instant “checker” to see how I am going to be treated. Don’t have to get a spray tan and turn orange, but so many women will get that before going to an event. Our color shade is fantastic; so many different hues ~ wouldn’t bleach it for the world. Those who do, are trying to “pass” or “escape” – for who and where?

that isn’t racist….it’s just a fact…like if someone is fat, I’d refer to them as fat @ss whatever, if they are tall, the same thing….it’s not racist. The only people who had a problem with his skin was himself…there’s not a big prejudice of skin color and such within Dominicans or on the island…..all Dominicans embrace each other….maybe a small percentage may be that way, but the majority are not…..Sammy Sosa just had a problem with himself…

  • Mona

On buses/subways, constantly hear people talk about how dark and light their relatives are – which child/brother is lighter/darker than the other – it’s really disgusting about the insecurities.

  • Kigali (Marriage before carriage)

    @num1dominicano,

As a Haitian I have my issues with Dominicans. You people kidnap, enlsave, and kill Haiitans but that is neither here nor there.

These black Americans are very insecure. The term “black” is more of an American cultural historical identifier. It would seem strange to me if Domincans or Cubans of any complexion referred to themselves as black as opposed to the nations that they or their parents come from. The language is different, the history is different, the religion is different etc. The term black doesnt do justice to it. Its bland, ahistorical, and erases our true indentities.

  • Kigali (Marriage before carriage)

    @num1domincano,

And did I mention we got the best part of the island. Holla.

  • NEXT_lalalove

Finally the little f**ker admits. He’s running from his race, there’s no doubt about that. He wears green contacts, perms his hair, bleaches his skin, and his wife isn’t exactly black either (the least of it, by the way). Did I miss anything? His culture has alot to do with it though. People from the Dominican Republic are in a sense criminalized for being Black…DARK, rather. It’s unfortunate…

  • drenk

    @ num1dominicano

i agree its not racist its just people dont know latino culture. i was called the indian cuz i look indian, never took it as an insult, its just my features

  • Redbone_Darkbutt_Black_White (It’s just coochie)

For those of us who have visited Central and South America, and the Caribbean, even if we go with a completely open mind, hoping to find some place where the “color line” means so much less than it does in this country, we simply can’t ignore what is right in front of us.

I have a great fondness for afro-latinas, but they, like me, are the products of their upbringing and curture. One dominicana who meant the world to me, had to be taught that I wasn’t some kind of “exception” — there are millions of decent native-born african american men (at least SHE learned).

The pathology that assigns all the best human qualities to those with pale skin, is HARDLY limited to latinos — just read teh posts on this f–ing blog.

  • num1dominicano

  • WHAT

see what michael jackson started – having people hating their skin color and start to bleach to look white – gee RIP michael but you set a bad example hahahaha
eveybody and there mama wants to white -

  • SMDH

i am light skin green eyes jamaican – and while i lived in jamamica i hated my skin color – i hated the fact that i was not dark skin – i was teased
because of those things – but after living here for the past 21years , i realize the lenght people would go through to make themself look lighter – and still today i would pefer if i was a bit darker, i just dont get why people want to so light.

  • Young Obama

Oh well it’s his life – if bleaching his skin makes him happy and he’s comfortable with the ridicule then so be it.

  • stx

and why would his wife sonia stand by and let him do this to himself? Did she want him to be lighter as well? I have to wonder about that, because if my man had such a beautiful Cocoa complexion, and he wanted to start bleaching, or I saw the cream was getting him too white, I would say Hey man you need to stop that. Your color is changing. The point that it got to that, I wonder what she was doing. I don’t think panamanians are color struck, they are down with their brown coloring, its the dominicans and puerto ricans that have it the worst with the lighter the better mentality. The afro cubans for the most part are happy with their afrocentricity and seem to be proud of it, with the whole music, they contributed heavily to the hispanic music scene.

  • Niasia

People are never happy with who they are. I am very light skinned and I hate my complexion b/c of all the drama it causes…but I see that some people will mutilate themselves to have the features I was born with….so sad! We as blacks just can’t be happy!

  • TruthBTold

It wouldn’t sell out fast in Black Neighborhoods. One, it requires a prescription from a dermatologist. Two, most black people barely have insurance, let alone one that will get you to a good dermatologist. Three, most insurance will not pay for it. Lastly, Black people are not about to pay that kind of money of pocket for the pricely up keep of a cream. I still say the cream is a camouflage for the truth. It’s a skin whitening pill or more potent IV form of the pill. A cream is not going to lighten Sammy’s scalp without bleaching his hair. He’ll be out marketing a product and making $$$ on a lie because the unknowing population believes that it is an external cream alone that will do this. Please. I’m no fool. Don’t buy into the cream B.S. It means money for Sammy and he’s selling a lie! Only the secret skin-whitening pill will whiten skin from the inside out by shutting down the melanin pigmentation producing agent in the skin from head to toe: leaving one complete even skin color.

    @ num1dominicano

Actually, Haiti used to be a top tourist attraction, that’s how we earned the title “Pearl of the Caribbean”. Unfortunately, poor and corrupt government leadership have caused us to lose that title. Therefore, we’re not a top tourist attraction because of government instability, not because we have issues with our race.

  • Truthfully

He has those fake-ass green contacts too.

  • JUDY

    @GET REAL
Here is my point…..most(not all)black people accept their skin color you don’t see a whole bunch of us walking around looking like Sammy Sosa or Michael Jackson despite bleaching cream being readily available. I get so tired of people singling out blacks when some of us choose to wear weaves, ponytails, etc, but it is totally acceptable when white people get tans, butt injections, lip injections, lipo, weave, nose jobs, braids, etc, etc, etc. When whites do it its self improvement but when other races do it its considered self hate???? I don’t know about you @Get Real but when I’m doing my hair and make-up I am not trying to look like a white person…..I like how I look. I’m not saying that some of us don’t have color issues but the large majority of us accept our skin color….just my opinion.

  • Sydney™

Please, oh, please tell me this isn’t true. He’s actually going to market a bleaching cream?!?:

Sammy Sosa joked on Tuesday about possibly marketing the skin lightening product that has caused an international stir.

Today the former Cubs slugger said he is not joking.

“If he feels it is of good quality, it may be something he will be endorsing and marketing in the United States in the near future,” said Rebecca Polihronis, the former Cubs community relations employee, who spoke on behalf of Sosa. Polihronis said Sosa told her today he is not yet prepared to release the name of the product.

    Just more…

    @ num1dominicano

    a) Just so you know, even the whitest white man who was born and raised in Haiti will call himself black, and will be proud of it. Which is why, I cannot for the life of me understand why the darkest latinos/dominicans will never ever say that they are black.

    b) A lot of Dominican women have been coming over to Haiti to marry rich Haitian men, or at least ones that are well off. There are just as many Dominicans living and working in Haiti, as there are Haitians in the Dominican Republic. I didn’t have to throw this one in, but your last comment hit a nerve.

  • DB8T

And yeah, Sammy Sossa is officially an idiot!

  • always knew

@bb-I completely disagree with your statement. so what if the Africans come and focus on education, etc. You people aren’t even aware of the extreme racism or prejudices, that whts and other nationalities hold against African. You guys kills me trying to make yourself above or better than, but are blk like us and are looked at the sme way they view African- AMericans. Only someone simple would think that you are any different…

Most of you are so out of place, you don’t even know when they are blatant with the discrimination…

I feel sorry for African / African-Americans, the prejudices that we have against each other, truly keeps the self-hatred issues going..

The sad part, you are not even aware of it. And for th reord, I see more and more Africans imitating or trying to be like blk Americans, more and more… So I don’t exactly understand what point you were trying to make…

  • Fff

    WTF?! That’s a damn shame….

I agree with you. They are the reason he bleached his skin in the first place. Because I cannot for the life of me understand why this dude would try to change his looks after being in the spotlight for so long, and after so many achievements. That’s some deep rooted self hatred right there.

I can only imagine what names Sosa was called if “black a**” is considered a term of endearment. SMH.

If anything, this shows just how widespread an issue colorism is — It certainly isn’t contained solely within the African-American community.

I never really beleived it was possible to bleach your skin like that. I am having second thoughts about MJ’s skin disease and a lot of more people who’s skin is much lighter. I know a lot of people are mad he let the cat out of the bag. I can imagine other people wanted people to think it’s a disease or the camera or sometimes I am tanned. Cut it out Hollywierd.

“Just so you know, even the whitest white man who was born and raised in Haiti will call himself black, and will be proud of it. Which is why, I cannot for the life of me understand why the darkest latinos/dominicans will never ever say that they are black.”

It would be idiot for a white person in Haiti to refer to themselves as black. Haitian, yes. But, black? No. Its nonsensical. Black is a largely American term to designate black Americans from white Americans. Its a bit of a faux pas go on to use it for West Indians or Africans.

If I say am I black, what does that say about my identity? Very little. It doest tell you what country I come from, doesnt tell you what language I speak, doesnt tell you about my religion or my culture. It just says what skin color I am when I am so much more than my color. When everyone is more than their color.

I said “Black”, because that’s the closest translation of the French word that we use which encompasses heritage and pride in our race.

Nevertheless, it seems as thought the whole point of my comment flew over your head. My point is that we are proud of who we are and do not associate negative connotations with being labeled as Black.

  • Kigali (Marriage before carriage)

    @DB8T

To be fair dark skinned people, especially dark skinned girls arent treated much better among American blacks either. I remember in school my brother and I, being brown skinned would harass my dark skinned best friend while we harassed his light skinned best friend. It was interesting how, even as children we associated emasculation and weakness to my brother’s best friend because he was light and male.

  • Kigali (Marriage before carriage)

Just because your not bleaching your skin, doesnt make you any more proud to be black then soso’s newly pale azz.

  • Kigali (Marriage before carriage)

    @DB8T

I think my comment may have flown over your head. You are only black in contrast to white but you are Haitian because you were born in HAiti, born to Haitian parents, speak Kreyol, etc etc etc. Haitian is a better identifier than black. If you are black, why not say you are Jamaican? They are black too.

  • Candy Cane

Whites can be born in Haiti and Jamaica and be Haitians or Jamaica’s too. In the sense of the word. Putting black along with your “county” is even more identifing. I’m Black American. You know I’m a black person, sadly, from Amerikka, lol.

If I say I’m Jamaican, 9 times 10 I’m black but not nessarily. I’m black and could be born and raised in Germany…. I’m still black.

  • DB8T

    @ Kigali (Marriage before carriage)

I think we are both flying over each other’s head, lol.

Yes, being born in Haiti would make us all Haitians, but it’s a lot more than that. You’d have to understand the history of Haiti to know what I’m talking about. I don’t expect you to understand, nor will I chide you for not being able to.

Everyone has criteria for feeling superior to others ,this is something that people need to remember when they decide to open up that kind of discussion

The Africans I know continue to strive for success and embrace their tradition and culture

Africans use Class and background to differentiate, just like all other groups

There are Africans of a certain class that might try and emulate the hiphop culture

I do not interact with such

I also have not had experience of people looking down on me. I treat people the same way I like to be treated

Question, who do you identify more with, a white man born and raised in Haiti whose family goes back in Haiti a few generations or a black American person from Alabama? Thought so.

  • http://www.bossip.com The Real B.I.Z.

Poor bastard… Yeah, I grew up with all types of people… Strangely, in almost all other cultures I can think of, there is this quiet self-loathing. Italians don’t really feel darker-skinned Italians, Dominicans and Haitians alike both (in my experience) seem to not understand they are essentially African, Ethiopians even, prefer and like associating with lighter-skinned Ethiopians no matter how dark they are… Factoid: in no country besides Nigeria is the ruling class (most influential and wealthy) composed of dark-skinned individuals. This fact allows strange manifestations like our friend Sammy to appear. For those with an I.Q. less than 105, that means these things are only results of years of discrimination, colonizations, and the white-man in general living on the backs of blacks. Other cool statistics you should know: out of the 36 million blacks that live in the U.S. (we’re 12% of the population), 6 million of us have college degrees. Great segway for my final statement; get your education my friends. Build your wealth, because knowledge leads to money and influence… Most importantly, money is also the great equalizer. Get your money up and all that other stuff is nonsense. Barack wears his hair natural, look at what that has gotten him. I’m just being chatty now… Ya’ll take care.

  • scooby dubious

It has gotten a bit embarrassing to be black. Whitening is less drastic than suicide, so I’d give Sammy a pass.

If Sammy would rather be white, the difficult part comes first: you have to become less black on the inside. Achieve that, and you seem less black in people’s eyes without such a glaring exterior alteration.

I imagine that color prejudice must be much more normal in Latin culture (it certainly was in Spain when I visited), with much less apology than you find in Anglo culture (at least among those who want to seem fair-minded). Now that he is no longer an active athlete, Sammy may have lost some of his insulation from the ordinary insults of caste that a black Latino has to live with.

It’s difficult for anyone to one day wake up and see himself as the larger world sees him: member of a despised and irredeemable race (wretched of the earth, indeed). It has unbalanced stronger people than Sammy Sosa. There is something naive about wanting to erase the stain of one’s race, as one sees it. But the real blemish isn’t exterior: it’s the mental habits, the chartered behavior of negritude that has to be erased before anyone who’s not black can see past the external difference of dark skin.

Black people in the public eye have to have an acute sense of just how much inner negritude they’re projecting. Too much is toxic; too little produces confusion about their identity (q.v., Rashida Jones, Maya Rudolph). Beyonce will probably never get beyond that last threshold of exoticism that, say, Paula Patton crosses effortlessly. But she’s still nice looking in caramel.
