Egypt’s Dr. Zahi Hawass On Beyonce: “She Is A Stupid Person”

Beyonce was touring Egypt and left popular Egyptologist, Zahi Hawass, pissed off because of her lack of knowledge and unwillingness to learn:
In a shocking display of poor diplomacy, Egypt’s chief Egyptologist Zahi Hawass allegedly called American pop-star Beyonce a “stupid person” during her brief tour of the Giza pyramids earlier this week. Writing in al-Shorouk newspaper, Summer al-Gamal said that Hawass became fed up with the pop star’s attitude after she did not show the interest Hawass felt was deserved of the pyramids.
According to Gamal, during Hawass’ self-guided tour, he said “I showed her the Sphinx and I gave her a book on King Tutankhamen,” but then his anger and frustration made its way to the forefront.
“Then he stopped being diplomatic and said in anger, ’she’s a stupid person and she doesn’t understand a thing and she doesn’t want to understand,’” wrote Gamal.
Hawass is known for his outbursts. A number of foreigners have told Bikya Masr that he has used Arabic to insult others at dinner events and gatherings, believing the non-Egyptians will not understand his Arabic. Beyonce, obviously, did not understand his jabs, Gamal said.
“She’s coming here to take pictures and that’s it,” Gamal quoted Hawass as saying.
He then assigned one of his assistants to take the American star and her entourage to a designed location nearby to shoot the photos. Similar to any high profile guest, pictures by the pyramids have become almost routine. When American President Barack Obama was in Cairo last June, Hawass personally escorted the president around the monstrous pyramids, allowing Obama to have his photo taken on the plateau.
Gamal added that Beyonce did not win over the journalists following her; however, as at least one bodyguard threatened a cameraman with violence if he did not give the pop-star her space. “One of the bodyguards threatened the cameraman, saying he would smash the camera if he continued to film,” Gamal wrote.
The incident has left archaeologists angered. They say it is time to show the world the real Hawass. “He insults and is so controlling that it has become extremely difficult to work in this country,” one archaeologist said.
Hawass’ office did not return phone calls on Thursday morning to discuss the actions of the country’s Supreme Council of Antiquities chief’s comments in front of journalists and Beyonce.
“We are talking about an Egyptian government official and he goes and says something like this? Come on, this is very rude and totally undiplomatic,” said another archaeologist, both of whom asked not to be named as their current work is funded by the council headed by Hawass.
For some reason we find this man and his comments hilarious. SMH

I usually do not agree with Zahi, but I agree with him on this. I am an avid learner in the area of Egyptology and to be taken to those places is more than taking hime photos. My favorite era in Kemet was the 18th dynasty Amarna period-Akhenaten, Tutankaten(his real name before he chaned it to Tutankhamun), Nefertiti, Nefertari, Tiye, etc. Beyonce is not in the profession of thinking. She has handlers who do that. She is to sing and look pretty.

They gained control of Egypt in 700’s A.D. The history of Egypt spans 6,000+ years. Arabs were no where to be found or heard of when Afrikans created Egyptian society and controlled our own territories.

Bottom line, just because Bey acted as a normal tourist dsnt make her any dumber than what millions of others have done: Go to the pyramids, take a tour take pics, post them online or send them out to friends with “I went to Egypt and I saw the Pyramids”
Just because she or any other tourist does not then dedicate their life to the study of Egypt doesn’t make them any less smart than Dr Zhai. The fact that Dr. Z treats people in his own field that way should speak volumes about the type of A_HOLE he REALLY IS.

Seeing the pyramids first hand is a trip worth taking. I got the chance to see them years ago when I was in the navy…probably the most worth while thing I did when I was in the military. Simply put, if a person is not humbled just by the sight of them, they probably don’t appreciate what they are seeing.

I grew up around Arabs of different nationalities and from my experience Egyptians tend to get along better with black people because most Egyptians are black. That’s not to say that some can’t have biased opinions but I’ve never had an issue with Egyptians. The Lebanese tend to be the most nastiest when it comes to dealing with black people from my experience.

Of course, some slaves were from native west African cultures and tribes…but the majority weren’t. Perhaps the east Africans who were taken into slavery didn’t feel like singing and dancing and were busy thinking of ways to escape.
If the historians don’t have the required insight and knowledge to look far enough back into a particular “west African” tribe’s history and culture, they might mistake an imigrant east African cultural item for native west African cultural item.
Similarly, if archeologists and anthropologists were studying United States history 500 years from now and the knowledge had been lost that peoples from all over the world migrated to the US, then many wrong *****umptions about the origins of US culture would result.

You may not even see/read this. But, I was wondering where you learned what you are sharing. Did you take a course (courses), or did you learn from reading certain books? I took a African history courses, and I learned about the Trans-Atlantic and East Indian slave trades. While I know that Africans did sell other Africans into slavery, I was never taught that it had anything to do with “East African” vs. “West African”. I would LOVE to learn more about this topic and African history in general. I recently purchased a book on the destruction of African civilization. But, I’ve been so busy studying for other cl*****es that I haven’t had time to read it. If you could share some of your resources, I would appreciate it. I’d like to check it out myself. I think ALL people should study African history. You’ll learn that society and social “ideas” weren’t ALWAYS what they’ve been in recent years/centuries.

When I was in Egypt in 2007 I realized for the first time the terrible level of repression that the Nubians experience from the Arab government. On my first day in the country, in Aswan, some Nubian men working in the hotel were so excited to see Black/African American people that they smiled, started applauding, and screaming “you are African”. How I was treated by the Arabs is another story altogether.

I was fortunate to have attended an HBCU and to have taken an African history course given by a wonderful professor who “broke it down” for us.
I also spent two weeks touring Egypt, 75% of that trip was spent in the south with the black Egyptians.
Two books you may find useful are:
“Egypt Revisited” (particularly page 406) by Ivan Van Sertima.
“The African Origin of Civilization” (particularly chapter 2) by the famous historian, anthropologist, physicist and politician Dr. Cheikh Anta Diop.

I can see a few of you do not grasp that in countries like Egypt, with histories like that of Egypt’s and in culturally succinct regions such as Egypt, it is almost unfathomable and extremely disrespectful to show lack of respect and interest in their number one prized possession, their ancient history.
My intentions are not to belittle anyone and what they attach themselves to, but if you don’t have [or have respect for] the same sort of cultural/historic attachment to something, then you most likely won’t understand.
I am not praising the archeologist for this, that doesn’t cancel out the fact that her coming to Egypt and being privileged enough to be toured around the Pyramids of Gaza but lack of interest makes her quite ’stupid’.
Look at it this way, he was expected to show diplomacy; Beyonce should know by now that her status is not prime to everyone. Therefore, when it is called for, of course she should show a sense of interest in something that is WAY bigger and entirely more significant than her stardom.
I don’t wish to speculate, but as far as I’m concerned, people’s histories are not a joke. This is what they live by, this is what, for thousands of years, they have known and continue to practice. The same cultures that are told that they aren’t right by Western standards. That is why Americans aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. They refuse for thousands of years of history and anthropological civilization to be denounced by newborn standards.
Essentially, he has the right to hold that idea of her considering she came to his territory, what he is proud of and proud to share. She gave him the wrong response and he declared her stupid. I would have concluded the same. If you aren’t genuinely interested in the Pyramids, walk around by yourself; better yet, do not bother visiting them.
In fact, she’s stupid for not having done at least a pinch of background research enough to show some interest while communicating with archeologists and tour guides smh. Traveling aimlessly won’t bring you enlightenment B, it won’t make you smarter.

This is not totally true. Although SOME PARTS of Nubia were at times in military conflict with Egypt, it was more along the lines of two brothers fighting (and later reconciling)rather than a fight to the death by bitter enemies. It is historical fact that, throughout much of Ancient Egypt’s history, Nubians made up a significant part of the Egyptian military.
Egypt was also at odds with Ethiopia from time time, again this was more of a case of two brothers fighting. The Bible mentions that Moses married an Ethiopian. This occured when he was supreme commander of the Egyptian army and Egypt was “at war” with Ethiopia. The conflict was ended when Moses married Tharbis, who was the daughter of the Ethiopian king.
Even more important than this, there were periods of civil “war” between northern Egypt (lower Egypt) and southern Egypt (upper Egypt).
Bey didn’t go there for coursework, it was for publicity. Educators can be so s*****bish if outsiders don’t immediately speak their language. Doctors, lawyers, same thing. Actually, the cause of Tut’s death at the age of Seventeen is still not known for sure, but my tour guide (when I was in Egypt in 2007) suggested that Tut’s death was due to the religious reforms that his father had made. According to this theory, the traditional priests were revolting from Tut’s father converting the population into worshippers of the Aten- meanwhile he was ignorning the military defenses of the country, and putting everyone at risk of attack from the outside.
Also, like someone else had said the Nubian and Egyptians fought at some points and were united at others- they were not bitter enemies. It was more like a civil war. I’m sure that even you have fought your siblings and cousins before. In the Cairo museum you can find many proofs of Nubian/Egypian alliances on artificats and even model figurines of the Nubian infrantry in the Egyptian military. Nubians soldiers were famed and skilled sought-after archers.
Nubians were not enslaved to build the pyramids, a paid workforce built the pyramids. You are mixing up this history with American history, LOL. Enslaved Africans in America built the White House.
Also, Arabs are to blame for their repression of Nubians since Nubian oppression comes from Arab hands. I spoke to actual Nubians in Southern Egypt in 2007, there is an apartheid system going on there.
I appreciate that you have developed an understanding that we have been deceived and tricked about the identity of the Ancient Khemites (Egyptians), but the history goes back thousands of years before Moses. Narmer, the great 1st Dynasty Pharoh was likely a Nubian himself, his physical appearance and birth in Upper (south) Egypt makes Nubian identity likely. The 1st Dynasty began around 3,000BCE. Egypt was already in its 19th Dynasty when Moses showed up. From the 1st Dynasty to the 19th is a huge time span, also consider that there were PRE-Dynastic rulers before the 1st Dynasty. Dr. Schoch, a geo-anthropologist dates the Sphinx to 5,000BCE (and possibly further back, to 9,000BCE) using conventional geophysical methods of weather dating. Moses was born in 1527BC. Therefore, Black Africans were in Egypt thousands of years before Moses. It IS Africa for God’s sakes, it should not be a surprise.

GOOD FOR YOU. I studied African history at a predominantly white university, but my instructors were Liberian and AA. I look forward to traveling to Africa (and other parts of the world) in the future. Africa is so huge, I wouldn’t know where to start. (Actually, I’d like to start at Seychelles for my honeymoon.

Dr. Cheikh Anta Diop’s life story is just as fascinating as his writings. He earned his Ph.D. in 1960 from the University of Paris by writing a dissertation that PROVED that the Ancient Egyptians were black Africans.
With all the full color portraits and statues that the Ancient Egyptians left of themselves, one might wonder why there was any need to PROVE they were black. Racist Eurocentric historians during the time of European colonialism, apartheid, and racial segregation just could not swallow the fact that one of the greatest civilizations in human history was developed by black Africans. It went counter to their philosophy of the black African as a depraved, barbaric savage who was only good for physical labor and servitude.
The images and statues of Ancient Egyptians that had dark skin, wavy, curly hair and other “Negroid” features were dismissed as being created by a black undercla$$ who lived in Egypt and who only imagined themselves in their artwork as being of a higher or even royal clas$$. Royal mummies that had unmistakable “Negroid” features were dismissed as being the occasional mixed-race person who was adopted into a royal family.
Adding to the confusion was the fact that there were many royal mummies that had white or “Caucasoid” features, even blond hair. What is not commonly known is that Egypt was, in fact, ruled by whites for 281 years under a minority rule apartheid system similar to what existed in South Africa for many years. The Hyksos (the so-called “shepard kings”) infiltrated Egypt from the north during a period of civil war. The Hyksos were eventually defeated and driven out of Egypt by Pharaoh Ahmose, who was the founder of the 18th Dynasty.
The Israelite people, who were predominately of the same Caucasian racial stock as the Hyksos, migrated to Egypt during the time of Hyksos rule. When the native Egyptians regained control of their country, the Israelites were understandably considered to be a threat to national security, hence this statement attributed to “pharaoh” in the Bible:
Exodous 1:10 – “…let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to p*****, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.”
The pharaoh who said this is not identified in the Bible and the statement is commonly and most logically attributed to Ahmose since the Israelites were enslaved in Egypt (and subsequently left Egypt) during the 18th Dynasty. Ahmose, however, was not on the throne at the time of the Israelite exodus. Thutmose II (Ahmose’s great-grandson) was the pharaoh during the Israelite exodus.
There has been some debate over Moses race. While it is known that Moses was adopted by a member of the Egyptian royal family named Thermuthis (also called Bithiah) and this woman is referred to by name and as “pharaoh’s daughter”, the identity of her father is not clear. This is not unusual since Egyptian kings often had children by several wives and the children by lesser wives were commonly left out of royal historical records.
However, knowing that Egypt was under black rule at the time of Moses’ birth and that this particular Egyptian royal family (18th Dynasty) had some disdain for white people in general and Israelites in particular, it would have been impossible for a white child to have been adopted into this royal family. Furthermore, Moses grew up to become a very high ranking general in the Egyptian army and his first wife (Tharbis) was an Ethiopian princess (the Ethiopians of this era were also not particularly fond of Caucasians). All this further mitigates against Moses being white.
The Israelites were predominately white, but some of them had intermarried with the black people they encountered on their migrations (Canaanites, etc.). Moses undoubtedly was a black Israelite.

It is true what you say regarding people being offended when their history is trivilized, however, the pryamids don’t represent Dr. Zahi’s history- so therefore Dr. Zahi does not fit this situation. The pyramids are more closely tied to Beyonce’s history, if anything, since Ancient Egyptians were Black people, and Arabs INVADED Egypt. As invaders, they did not build anything. Additionally, they invaded in 639 AD, whereas construction started on the pyramids in 3,000 BCE, Giza was built by 2,540 BCE. Therefore, when Arabs forced their way into the country the pyramids were already standing.
Him being angry at Beyonce for being uninterested in what he had to say on the topic is like a White American tour guide being offended when an Asian tourist is not interested in hearing about Native Americans’ totem poles, long houses, medicine, and sweat lodges. I’m wondering, is what you shared (about the likelihood of Moses being “black”) related to the ideas and beliefs that black are “Hebrew Israelites”? I really don’t know much about that philosophy or its basis. Also, (another question in reference to Moses being “black”), I remember reading in the OT that Moses married a black woman and that his siblings were angry about it. I remember that God struck his sister (I can’t remember about his brother) w/an illness ( I think leprosy) for their attitude/behavior. If my memory serves me accurately, how does this story fit into the concept of Moses being a “black” man. [BTW, I ordered those books on Amazon last night!

If you watch interviews of her she tries to sound intelligent but she ends up looking like a dumb***** trying to convince everyone that she is articulate. she makes black female entertainers look stupid. The Bible refers to the Ancient Hebrew Israelites as “God’s Chosen People”, therefore many groups who are in no way related to the Israelite people and their modern descendants have tried to claim this identity.
Of course, as I said previously, some of the Ancient Israelites were black, but they were then, and their descendants are today, predominately white.
The term “God’s Chosen People” is not fully understood by many. God chose a weak and feable group of people, the Israelites, to be an example of what obedience and disobedience to God’s law will bring. He had no special favor towards them and the Israelites had no inherent genetic or other superiority to other people. Indeed, even though the Israelites were “God’s Chosen People”, there history is full of misery and suffering due to their disobedience.

Moses’ brother and sister, Miriam and Aaron, did not criticize Moses for marrying a black woman, they criticized him for marrying an Ethiopian.
Moses’ marriage to the Ethiopian princess Tharbis ended the war between Ethiopia and Egypt. With Egypt and Ethiopia now allies, the Israelites viewed both countries as agents of their former oppression. It bothered them greatly that a member of a royal family that was closely aligned with their former slave masters was not only living in their midst but also married to their leader!
Another thing to remember is that in ancient times, people were more identified by their tribal or national affiliation rather than skin color or race. That is why there is scant mention of people’s race or color in ancient historical records, by much information about people’s national or tribal affiliation. The Ancient Egyptian’s disdain for the Caucasians who lived to the north of them was not due to their skin color or race, but rather to their lack of civilization and culture compared to the Egyptians. Conversely, the Ancient Egyptians had good relations with Asians, whose culture and level of civilization was comparable to their own.

So, you’re saying that “Tharbis” is the woman referenced in Genesis (I’m only asking b/c some biblical men had several wives over time). Would the connection/evidence be shown in those books you referred? I’m very interested in learning more–PARTICULARLY about the role of Africans in biblical/Christian history. It bothers me that so many people want to deny that Africans had any influence or made any contributions in the ancient world. I don’t buy it, and frankly, I don’t think those ideas make any sense. Life originated in Africa. Yet, people want to act as if Africans were “isolated” from the rest of the human “race”. Any findings on the continent of Africa that suggest “advanced” technology or knowledge are frequently attributed to “others”. Why there is this attitude (in this day and age) that it is “impossible” for the great “mysteries” and “wonders” of Africa to belong to the African people and to be the work of African hands, I just don’t know. The Van Sertima book only briefly mentions Moses twice (this is noted in the book index). Dr. Diop’s book does not mention Moses.
The ancient Jewish general and historian, Flavius Josephus, wrote extensively about Moses and covered his entire life. A good reference is:
“The Works of Josephus” by William Whiston. This book is available in hard cover from Amazon. The book is extensively indexed with many references to Moses.
Historical records only indicate that Moses was married twice: His first wife was the Ethiopian princess Tharbis whom he married when he was an Egyptian prince and general in the Egyptian army. His second wife was Zipporah (Exodus 2:21) whom he married when he was in exile. As you noted, it was not uncommon for men in Moses’ time to have several, and in the case of royalty, many wives.
It would have been unusual for a man of Moses stature not to have at least one Egyptian wife and he may very well have had one. However, Moses is regarded as a notorious TRAITOR in Ancient Egyptian history. In addition to physical an economic punishments, an additional way that the Ancient Egyptians dealt with such people, particularly royalty, who were disgraced was to omit them and their families from official history texts. Therefore Moses, and even the Israelite oppression, have scant references in official Ancient Egyptian history records.

Black people comprise many prominent persons in the Bible. However, at the time the Bible was written, people were not cl*****ified by race or skin color. There was no stereotype of superiority or inferiority based on race or color. People in those times were stratified by social, economic, national, regional, and tribal affiliation.
The Ancient Egyptians were unusual in that they not only left many statues and full color portraits of themselves, but also well preserved mummys that make identifying their racial makeup easy.
It is possible to deduce the race of some Biblical figures through corroborative research on their family background and national and/or tribal affiliation. In the case of Moses, is reasonable to *****ume that he was a Black Hebrew Israelite because it is far-fetched to *****ume that the Black Egyptian royal family who drove White invaders from their country and why subjugated the residual White population would then turn around and adopt a White baby and then, when that baby grew up, put him in charge of the Egyptian army.

European conquest and confiscation of other people’s lands and resources is based on the supposition that other people are inferior, sub-human barbaric savages and deserve to be enslaved, eradicated by genocidal wars, and have their material wealth and possessions taken from them. This alleviates the guilt that would accrue from committing these offenses against other human beings.
This ideology allows the offender to feel no more remorse for slaughtering an indigenous population than a cattle rancher would feel for turning some of his cattle into beef and leather.
Now, when evidence is found that the people you want to enslave and eradicate actually have irrefutable proof of their humanity as evidenced by their cultural, scientific, and governmental achievements, then immediate action must be taken to ascribe those achievements to “others” who were not Black Africans, but who just happened to live in Africa.
In some cases, the “others” did make significant contributions to African civilization. The White “Hyksos” invaders who dominated Egypt for 281 years contributed nothing to the country culturally and in fact, the Hyksos adopted Egyptian names, styles of dress and cultural customs.
The Hyksos did bring valuable knowledge of weapons and warfare techniques which the native Egyptians studied, learned well, and used against their oppressors to drive them…and subsequent invaders…OUT.

I understand the “politics” of oppression as well. I’m just glad that it’s possible for people to learn more and free their minds from “shackles” if they want to.

Every time I’ve seen Beyonce go to different countries, she has acted with a lot of respect towards the country. I bet Bossip didn’t run anything about her helping to immunize children against polio in Ethopia when she went there on her last tour. I know Beyonce was getting some flack from conservative Muslim groups there (he could be part of one of them.) I’ve seen his specials on Discovery, and he constantly tries to negate black Africans’ part in building the Egyptian civilation. So believe me he has no problem calling black people stupid. Some people were saying that he escorted President Obama and Alicia Keys around, but I bet he knows that they’re half white, too.

Beyonce is a smart and deep woman. She finished high school like most entertainers. Most of them didn’t go to college, either. I remember reading an article about her and it talked about how she went to an art museum to look at photographs of the Civil Rights movement. I remember reading that some fans saw Beyonce and her mom in a bookstore, and they were buying history books. Maybe she was in a rush because I know that she only had 1 day between performing in Egypt and then Greece. So if she only wanted a quick trip to Pyramids and the Sphinx, it’s nothing wrong with that. She can always go back to learn more or read about it herself. But I don’t think she ever acted disinterested, I really have a feeling that Haw***** just wanted to insult her because she’s a black woman.
You know from the way MJ spoke. You wouldn’t have guessed that he was a genius. MJ and Beyonce strike me as just shy people. Sometimes you can be really smart and not be the best public speaker. I think that Beyonce is a lot better public speaker than MJ was. I really think she speaks just as well as about 80% of celebrities. I remember watching a PBS special with Henry Louis Gates Jr, and he didn’t want to really talk about how Egypt was under black rule from it’s earliest history through a lot of its greatest achievements, including the Pyramids. But it was another man that was a historian of Egypt. He said that he considered himself a black man and talked about how Egypt was solely under black rule at one time.
