In her attempt to rebel against the “trendy” pop-star look and feel, Rihanna decided to rock that signature “edgy pixie” cut. In her words:
“‘I felt like the whole world had long, curly, flowy blonde hair. Ciara, Beyonce, Mariah, Christina Milian. Everybody wanted to be like everybody else. So I cut my hair and they (Def Jam) made me put my long hair back in (as extensions).
‘The second time, I didn’t have any discussions, nothing. I just cut it, I dyed it black, I went into the studio making music my way. I found myself all at once. I like things strong, edgy, a little to the left. I don’t like things that are expected – nothing cliched.’”
Awww – look at Rih Rih trying to be little miss originality. Well, we must admit her new look is far more fetching than the old. Now if we can only get her to step up her sound…

Good for her that she didn’t go for the Beyonce clone look! That look is getting so played and tired. Other women in the industry need to take note. Be original or at least switch it up!

I don’t think they are all trying to be like each other but they all have that same long blond/brown weave thing going and it gets really old. Maybe if they changed it up some (just the hair), they would stand out more and maybe be recognized a tad bit more (excluding Mariah, you were right about her, she’s been around for a while so she has to copy/clone no one)
Again, there is nothing original about Rhianna’s look. She is no way in the same cl***** as Fantasia, Keyshia or Mary. They are real, yes. Rhianna is on strings. She is being told what to do and say. Take away her stylist, producers and writers and that’s she how “real” she is. She would be lost. She was not the first, second, or third chick in the industry to rock short hair. Fantasia’s hair was short, Kelis hair was short, Tichina Arnold, Eva, Nia long…I can go on and on of those that had short hair in the last 5 yrs.

No1 in the industry does what they want not even the biggest artist. She wasn’t making music her own way Def Jam payed for them producers and big too. As far as her style goes, she has a stylist and stylist are paid to make her look good, she ain’t doing nothing on her own.
Her new album is due this year and i’m kind of sure a new image is going to come along with it.

I totally agree but we have to admit that Rihanna stands out from the other short haired women that you named. I think the other girls are way more talented but you know now a days talent doesn’t mean too much. So based on looks and fashion, she’s killing it. But the other ladies are doing their thing as well. But you know, if looking good is your only real talent, then that’s what they are going to focus on. I do get your point though.
The only one that is struggling in music is Christina Milan. The rest have their own fanbase so they are already being recognized. Beyonce doesn’t need to be recognized anymore than she already is, Mariah is established, and Ciara is successful in her own right. Rhianna mentioned Ciara – Ciara dyed her hair black before when she was still blonde. So I guess she (Rhianna) was trying to look like her. I’ve heard comments about Rhianna biting Kelis, FeFe Dobson (sp?) and other artists style. Why didn’t she address that instead of throwing darts at other artists?
I like Rhianna’s style, too, but she is giving herself WAY too much credit.

Lemme tell yall a story peep: Motown wanted to stifle Stevie Wonder’s creativity in the beginning of his career. Berry Gordy told him that he needed the Motown writers and producers to make him a sure star dispite him proving himself with a couple of songs already (he wrote Tears of A Clown & worte and produced his own Signed, Sealed, Delivered) . But anybody else would conform because hey, Motown had the best writers/ producers in that day in time and NO ONE had full control of their artistry at that time. They told their artist how to dress, walk, talk, & perform. So Stevie lets his deal run out and gives them an album that he did on his own as his last that was a masterpiece (“Where I’m Coming From”).So for two years he recorded 2 albums that he didnt release and used as leverage to negotiate with Motown who eventually resigned him, and in turn let him have FULL creative control. I AM NOT comparing Stevie to Rihanna!! HELL NAW! The point is this, every artist no matter who that has been signed was signed for a reason and she has every right not to have that common look and make common commercial songs. Look at Stevie! How can you tell him he cant write his own sh*t???Prince wasnt the best singer or dancer but he was a musician and he wrote the best songs and performed them like no other. Good for Rihanna. People didnt hate on T-Boz or Janet for their lack of vocal ability; or in turn, hate on Whitney & Mariah for their non- dancing skills. Anyone who is willing to be themselves and not be conformed or pimped by the system should be applauded.

I found Rhianna more interesting and worthy of discussion when she was rumored to be dating Shia LeBouf, the star of Transformers. Now, that the rumor has been defunct, and Rhianna is dating Chris, I don’t find her interesting anymore. Frankly, I feel that dating Cris is a bad career move, I mean he’s deep into the urban market. Sorry, but Rhianna should have pulled a Diana Ross, and crossover.
I don’t have nothing bad to say about her. I saw her at MGG on the Glow in the Dark tour and she exceeded my expectations. Long hair via extentions/wigs are too common now…if I didn’t know I definitely found out today when two of my 8th grade students had some new long, locks today…LOL

I think almost everyone has missed the point, in regards to her transformation. She may have left the clone pack behind for the time being, but she didn’t do anything original, all she did was to steal the look of the Metal/BDSM community. All of this is a package including that statement she just released. First of all she is saying this same thing entirely too much. It seems as though she’s trying to justify the transformation. Like if she says it enough times then she will really believe it. That short hair cut is nothing new. Her music and stage presence is nothing new and really not adding much to the music business. She’s flash no substance. It just goes to show how fickle this business is….for some no talents if you just have an edgy look you can make it. Hers is completely falsified. How can she say Mariah, Beyonce and others were trying to be like each other. Is she trying to put herself ahead of theM? Why because she cut her hair? GTFOH. It’s going to take a lot more than a haircut and fake edge to get anywhere near those artists levels. If her story is true, then she is smart. There is no reason to belittle and criticize her if she thinks she is being original. It is true that since Beyonce, girls have been packaged or repackaged as her clone. It’s not true that they have to do what the label tells them to all of the time. There are stories of artists who have made it big or have crumbled only when they refused to do with the label told them.

If Rhianna appeals to white people, then good for her. It doesn’t make her music any less valid. If anything, artists who have cross over appeal survive. A lot of great black artists were crossover hits: Prince, Jimmy Hendrix, Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Beyonce, Destiny’ Child… and so on. It’s good business sense and the record business is the business of selling. Not trying to be as “black” as possible, whatever that means.
Q, if you were really into being black or whatever you would be glad that a black girl made it and is popular. Although she might be biracial, she will ALWAYS be considered black.

Where is Kelis and Fefe Dobson now? Yeah, dropped from their record label. I do believe that Kelis was being edgy for cutting her hair. However, short hair was in style in the 90s, but the clones coming out in 2000 are all about the weave. Do you really care whose idea it was? Stop being so pretentious and get over yourselves. This is an industry that is very hard to survive in. Kudos to her for making it.
Also, I rarely hear her music on urban radio either. But, this is the reason she is still surviving in this game because of cross over appeal. And now EVERYONE is trying to get into pop music.

Well I do like her new image, it is edgy,vogue and bold. Let’s be honest, most Black female entertainers do adhere to the “long,blondish hair” mold. However she is only copying Fefe Dobson. She even admitted it. It is so sad that Fefe is not getting recognition for her creativity.Yeah and I agree (although I kina like Ree ree) she is not independent, no one is in show business.

Rihanna is doing her thang! Good for her! Alot of people believe you have to look a certain way to make it in this business i.e. long, straight, blonde, european hair/weave/wig. She showed everybody that someone can make it with short, REAL, black hair.
When Lauryn Hill was rocking locks ain’t *****ody accuse her of stealing the Jamaican Rastafarian hair style(God knows that they were the originators). Why? Because Lauryn made the look work for her. The locks suited her face, her clothes were fashionable and her songs were on point.
If Kelis was on point with her fashion and had introduce her short, black hairstyle when she sang Milkshake, she would have been hailed has a trendsetter but Kelis was sporting pink short hair at one point(we can accuse her of stealing Pink’s pink punk rock look from back in the day), bleached blonde hair at another (definitely stole Marilyn Monroe’s look), black hair at yet another and never stuck to a particular color or length.
Rihanna, on the other hand, kept the black hair and just kept cutting it as Umbrella got more popular.
My point? Everybody steals looks but you have to make the look work for you and set yourself apart from the pack. Halle Berry and Lauryn Hill did it. Now Rihanna is doing it. From one bajan queen to another: You go girl!
RiRi’s style is dope. The haters can’t deny it. I don’ like her concert costumes but her candid pics with her show how fly she always is. I like her accessories, nail polish, and she has really good taste in shoes. I liked the purple and black boots she wore and the black heels she wore to CB’s b-day party.
I also liked the Gucci dress she wore to Madonna’s benefit event for Africa and gray dress she wore to the NRJ awards. Check her style out online…. this chic gives me a lot of ideas and she really needs her own clothing line.

Rihanna looks stupid about now plus Ciara has been wearing dark brown and black hair since Spring 2006. She switches from blonde, black and brown. Rihanna wears that same hair-style that Beyonce (Me,Myself And I), FeFe and Kelis wore first. Her STYLIST, PRODUCERS, SONGWRITER’S and DEF JAM changed her style, not HER. And who is she trying to say makes cliche music–Mariah, Beyonce and mostly Ciara doesn’t.
