Mo’Nique Addresses Oscar Buzz and Haters and Bossip’s ‘Precious’ Performance Review

Posted by Bossip Staff

monique-precious

If you haven’t seen Precious, we “highly” recommend you go see it as it’s a story that must be told and is relevant to a whole lot of people. Have you been verbally abused and tortured by a family member? Sexually abused? Mo’Nique recently was interviewed and addressed a few things about the movie. BOSSIP also grades the individual performances under the hood

Mo’Nique: A-

Oscar-worthy performance and it will be artistic robbery if she is not in the mix.

Gabourey Sidibe (Precious): B+

You couldn’t tell she is a rookie at this. Not only did Gabby do the damn thing, this had to take a lot of courage to pull-off.

Paula Patton: C

We aren’t sure if Paula Patton ( Ms. Blu Rain) was supposed to connect with Gabby, if that was the intention, it failed. On a side note, was the lesbian relationship really necessary? There was already too much going on in the movie.

Mariah Carey: C+

A step up from Glitter, but that’s not saying much. We think MiMi did a good job. We didn’t see an authentic-looking connection and chemistry between Gabby(Precious) and MiMi. Didn’t see it with Paula Patton either. Poor Precious, no one connects with her poor soul during the entire movie.

Overall Movie Grade: A-

Moviefone’s interview:

Are you surprised that people are so surprised you have the dramatic chops that you display in this movie?

Well, I think that people are surprised because they oftentimes want to put us in a box. And it’s like, “OK, well, you can only do this.” And it’s so unfortunate becuase there are so many talented people out there that get put in boxes and they don’t choose to fight their way out of it. It’s like, “Guys, I’m an entertainer. I love being funny, that’s what keeps me alive. But I also love entertaining, period.”

What would earning an Oscar nomination mean to you?

Any nomination would be appreciative, but we’ve already won it. We’ve already won. Because when you get an Asian brother that comes up to you and says, “Mo’Nique, what I’m going to say to you is going to sound really weird, but I have to say it. I am Mary Jones, and I was Mary Jones to my brother and my sister.” And now he’s sobbing and we’re embracing and I said, “Congratulations for your honesty, now go get you some help.” We’ve already won.

There’s been a lot written in the media about you missing a couple movie premieres and not doing enough to promote the film. Do you think that coverage has been fair?

Well, who’s saying that? Because no one can tell me who, Kevin, do you know who they are [laughs]? Because I want to meet them! Who are “they”? Baby, people gonna talk. It comes with the territory. But didn’t they talk about Jesus? Then they killed him. So, what makes me think I’m so special that they’re not gonna talk about me?

MovieFone has the rest of the Interview.

  1. Cynthia

    1st

  2. Dr. Heather

    I plan on seeing it as soon as it comes out….

  3. Cynthia

    So far, I heard the movie did an excellent job portraying the what the novel initially to do (i.e. spread awareness about abuse and give hope).

  4. vadiva

    I didn’t like the book so I’m waiting for the DVD. This is not My STORY… So I won’t be able to relate.

  5. Its6amHoGetOut, I'm about to enlighten ya'll on a few things.........

    I’ll see it, but like i said before; I aint payin’

    F*ck Emmitt Perry!

  6. lanette

    BOSSIP grading folks? now that is cute…

  7. JBROWN

    I have to disagree with the ratings a little, this is an extraordinary movie guys, even if you can’t relate you can’t help but feel precious’s pain, as far as the ratings are concerned i think that precious should have gotten an A as well, for killing this role with no intial acting training, Paula did great as well so i would give her a B. Mariah should get a B as well for her role, its a huge step from Glitter so much that you stop looking at her as a superstar after the 2nd scene. Overall guys really go see it, we all know someone named “Precious”

  8. White Women Rule

    Bossip, please stick to misinformation because you movie reviews are dreadful at best. Paula Patton’s character showed an interest in the child because she saw that there was something there. And as far as the “lesbian thing”, it informed the girl that although her mother told her that “homos” were bad, here was a woman who wanted nothing from her other than for her to try her best (and you missed that?). As far s Mariah Carey goes, her character did more than most social workers if you were to believe the television news, she actually addressed abuse in the home (and still you missed that?). Goodness darling, I know public school is in dire straits, but yours must have been just horrid! Your clueless darling, clueless.

  9. EleKtrik EccEntriK (ban conformity)

    Damn when are they releasing it nationwide????
    I can’t even find a decent bootleg! lol

  10. the film is fantastic!
    but mariah carey’s performance is highly overrated. she gets an A for effort. Paula Patton was way more moving.

  11. dont_start_none_wont_be_none

    I understand Monique plays a disgusting pig of a woman in the film: now THAT was a STRETCH!

  12. UMMM YOU GUYZ DIDNT GRADE DEZE RIGHT GABBY DESERVES A A+ AND SO DOES MONIQUE DA REST IS RIGHT (GABBY WAS A ROOKIE MAKIN HER PERFORMANCE EVEN MORE GREATER)

  13. Ara

    Why do I feel that the character Monique portrays is really her true personality

  14. 1TruDiva w/the PlatinumVocals---Pimpin, Platinum style!!! J-Hud's concert was OFF THE MEAT RACK!!!!!!!!!

    Me and 6am are going together to see this movie.

    YES, I’m paying for the movie. Dinner is on him!!!!

    Lol!!!!!!

  15. AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWSHADDAAAP!!!!

    Bossip, you know how I do. I did it before and I’m gonna do it here all over again – ah, what the hell is an ‘invidual’? You done ‘Bossiped’ again. You just can’t win for losing, can you?

    And I was on board with what Mo’Nique was saying until she started equating herself with Jesus. What cha’ say thar now???

  16. 1TruDiva w/the PlatinumVocals---Pimpin, Platinum style!!! J-Hud's concert was OFF THE MEAT RACK!!!!!!!!!

    Question–

    Is the girl playing Precious (Gabourey Sidibe) actually Precious? I mean, the real one? I’m almost sure I read that somewhere but I won’t bet the farm on it.

  17. AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWSHADDAAAP!!!!

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Nah, that wildebeest ATE Precious.
  18. AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWSHADDAAAP!!!!
    1TruDiva, check out ‘20/20.’ There’s a girl on it that got her face shot off by her boyfriend.
  19. Willow
    Why is Mo’Nique comparing herself to Jesus? Would someone please bring her back to reality before its too late. Bossip, you never disappoint me in your level of ignorance, if you are actually going to make an attempt at reviewing a movie please read the book first. Paula Patton’s character Ms. Rain was a lesbian in the book so the movie did not add anything new.
  20. Demi
    Mo’Nique playing a slob. Was that a stretch. I was not impressed.
    I rate all actors a “C” for okay. This was an afternoon special type movie, only with an “R” rating.
  21. The real future Mrs. 6am
    Sorry Ms. Diva,
    But my baby is going to see 2012 with me tonight, now maybe, just maybe if we aren’t tired after dinner we’ll “accidently” find our way into Precious. But not if they expect us to pay!
  22. Bossip not letting me post tonight
  23. Oh…it’s just not letting me post what I want to say
  24. Ok it just won’t allow me to talk about the movie…which is odd because I’m not using curse words.
    Well I think Paula Patton is gorgeous. I would say more, but it conflicts with what Bossip says so it won’t post for some reason
  25. Prestonelite
    I saw the movie, and honestly, I could have just waited to watch it on DVD. Black people act like this movie is sooo amazing and that it represents black life, in truth it does not. This film represents the part of our population with mental illness. The sad truth about the movie is that it reminds me again that black women should stop thinking low down thugs are sexy because your choice of man affects more than you know. its a cycle of women who think good men are boring and thugs are sexy until they beat you, steal from you, mess up your credit, or molest your children.
    This movie is fine , but it isnt great. I’m not even going to pretend. But its better directed and written than any garbage Tyler Perry would write and direct.
  26. The real future Mrs. 6am
    Sorry Ms. Diva,
    But my baby is going to see 2012 with me tonight, now maybe, just maybe if we aren’t tired after dinner we’ll “accidently” find our way into Precious. But not if they expect us to pay!
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    This movie was not wriiten or directed by Tyler Perry. You would rather spend your money on a movie that’s pretty much giving you your death date than a movie that might help abused children. You are truly a sad case…and that goes double for 6am
  27. Black ignorance is contagious
    The real future Mrs. 6am you wrote:
    “Sorry Ms. Diva,
    But my baby is going to see 2012 with me tonight, now maybe, just maybe if we aren’t tired after dinner we’ll “accidently” find our way into Precious. But not if they expect us to pay!”
    ————————————————–
    I see you have the n*gger syndrome. You’d rather spend 12 dollars on a white movie and sneak in because “they expect us to pay?” Why not support a black movie? Do you feel like you shouldn’t have to pay to see it – yet your cheap ***** is willing to pay to see 2012? Its that type of mentally from n*ggers like you – is why black business will never thrive. People like you feel like you are entitled to anything black for free.
  28. Linda
    I connect with this movie. I thought it was incredible and very emotional. Bossip just hates. I think i’m going over the conctreteloop for a change. This website is all about self-hate.
    Everyone in this move was a A+, Mariah, Monique and Gabby.
  29. thatbrutha
    GO MONIQUE!
  30. imjustnoisy
    I saw the movie and feel the young lady deserves the oscar nod instead of Monique.
  31. Prestonelite
    Booooooo.
  32. LVW
    If this movie can help shed some light on how mental health issues plague the Black community ( I haven’t seen the movie yet)- I think that will be progress. We have so many wounded people in the black community who fear stigma and will not get help/treatment for emotional/mental illness. Hopefully, this movie will do more than win awards for the actors/actresses, but make a difference (like the Asian guy Monique references in her comments)in the lives of people who can relate to it.
  33. BLACK PPL!
    OMG! God bless her!
  38. Nicole
    I don’t get why people are praising Mariah. She was in it a whole of 5 minutes. Paula did a FAR better job. She was the main person looking out for Precious and who brought her into her home. Mariah was so so. Maybe because she did good for someone like herself who can’t act but the true stars were Gabby, Monique and Paula. Even though you know white Hollywood won’t recognise them. I’m sure Julia Roberts or Nicole Kidman must have had a movie out his year. And why hasn’t this whole cast been on Oprah? Since she loveedddd the movie so much? Yet she’ll have “those” folks on her show for absolutely no reason at al. Oprah is truly an OREO! She needs to look in the mirror and see it reflect that she is BLACK! And put some shine on black actors.
  39. @BLACK PPL!
    Yeah, it was a book called “Push” by Sapphire and it came out in 1996. A lot of people read this book over a decade ago and the movie sticks closely to the book.
    It’s almost like when they make a movie about the Bible…I mean…it’s been around for you to read
    BLACK LOVE!!
  41. Hey Girl
    The movie will be outinthe midwest next weekend, I am going to see it with a few of myfriends from my book club. The book was sooo graphic I cannot wait to see the film adaptation. I can belive Monique did a good job, and I can bet more than a little money that she will be nominated for an oscar
  42. Greenie
    Dear Bossip: Paula Patton’s character was a lesbian in the book. That’s why it had to be in the movie. Duh.
  43. Greenie
    Oh yeah, and Oprah’s already done a Precious show and will most likely do another one after it’s released nationwide. People need to stop with the Orea bs and get with it, seriously. Just because someone is black and appeals to a wide audience doesn’t make them white on the inside. It’s the same ignorance that leads to calling smart black people “white” because they speak well and get an education. Stop it. Pick up a book and educate yourself
  44. Great movie all around. Real as hell, painful as hell, but funny as hell too. And I think that’s what got me…because in reality even in effed up situations all those emotions are there. Laughter helps you survive.
    Mo’Nique and Gabourey did a great job.
    I have no intentions of watching such a negative movie, however, I have to agree, people are a little thick out there. I have read how people watched the movie, but didnt understand how this girl had HIV if she never had a boyfriend, HELLO, if her dad sexually abushed her, there is your clue.
  46. Army
    This movie is too negative so you won’t see it?I bet you don’t watch the news
    So HIV, child abuse, self hate, drugs and sexual abuse is positive in your view, sorry isnt mine!
    I am a person who enjoys a good comedy and personal triump movies, soz, but I don’t pay to listen or watch anything that leaves your spirits feeling down. Life is bad enough and I do not need to compound my life with anything that will make it feel depressed even if it is only for 2 hours.
  48. Army
    @ Tracey
    I meant this movie is a representation of life. if you see this movie as negative then God help you ’cause they are lots of people of all gender race and social cl***** who call this reality.
    Tired of seeing this black women overcoming abuse movies. Wish we could move forward.
  65. blahblahBOOO to Bossip
    aright I havent seen the movie but how could u guys give bad grades to Mariah and Paula Patton and the movie gets an “A-”? any main character in a Oscar level movie would get at least a B-, while individual nominees (like Monique will be) are in the A range…
    I’ve heard only good things about ALL the performances and i’m guessing bossip staff can only relate to *****-ish, hood, over-the-top characters (i.e. Katt Williams) smh…..CMON SON to Bossip
  66. Beanpie St. Ides
    Didn’t we do this with The Color Purple? Black folks only get work when they are molested?
  67. Debra
    Saw it yesterday, Mo was so real, and the young lady who play Precious was outstanding! In all honesty, all the characters were great! Lenny Kravitz, Mariah, and Paula were also very good! Good job!
  68. HANNIBALS PIMP AKA MR.BACKHAND
    I HOPE THEY MADE MONIQUE SHAVE THEM HAIRY LOGS OF HERS FOR THE MOVIE.
  69. DipLowDiva
    I saw the movie the other day. Agreed, characters all did an excellent job, but why pay to see such a dark and depressing movie such as this? Hell, I got my own damn problems.
    Precious’ character reminded me so much of Celie from the Color Purple. I was disgusted throughout the entire movie…Guess it was just too much for me.
  70. nunya bizness
    I wasn’t planning on seeing it but I might.
  71. Yin
    Seriously, half of the time in the movie – I couldn’t understand a word the girl (Precious) was saying! Lord, she can mumble…
    I understood Rhonda (Jamaican girl) better than Precious!
    Favorite part! (1) SHUT THE BUMBA RAS CLOT UP!
  72. The real future Mrs. 6am
    I just saw two responses to my post about what 6am and I were going to do this weekend, he wanted to respond but I think I’ll do it.
    @Mock,
    Youre a fool if you dont think Tyler Perry has anything to do with this film, it says right in the advertising “from Tyler Perry and Harpo Productions” what are you too drunk off new female cooch to read? And as 6 states “Emmitt Perry” will never get a dime of our money” if you less educated idiots want to support his projects so be it.
    @ Black ignorance is contagious,
    It sure is and you seem to be the first person infected with it. Emmitt Perry hasnt done one thing for the black community except sell you some of the worst pieces of crap ever filmed. I bet youre one of those blacks who think OJ and RKelly are innocent too huh? Eventually the day is going to come where you ghetto negroes are gonna stop being followers and become leaders who can not only think for themselves but can also see through stereotypical bullsh*t. It is you my friend who suffer from the so called “N*gger syndrome” you support the stupid, you continually give your hard earned money to some latent homosexual who sells you nothing more than warmed over sh*t disguised as entertainment, in his movies all the darkskin men are evil and the liteskins or hispanics save the day, etc. You cant possibly be so stupid you cant see this…..
    So in closing 6 and I did go see 2012 after dinner, we decided to skip “Precious” because the people that came out said they expected more and the best parts were all in the previews; big shocker for an Emmitt Perry production!
    So like my baby says “F**K Emmitt Perry” and some of you also!
    P.S. @ Tracey and BIGHEAD,
    I’d like to thank you two for being progressive and having the ability to see past whats up on that screen, Black people arent always the victims dummies! When my baby and I go to the movies we like to be entertained, and 2012 with its black president and black Doctor entertained the hell out of us!
    Don’t bother responding as I only type on here every 2-3 months and like 6 I retire 12/31/09 at 5pm. maybe some of you will be smarter by then.
    Like my hubby, love future Mrs. 6am
  73. The real future Mrs. 6am
    @ Dip low diva,
    Thank you!!!!!!!!
  74. Tiffany
    @ Mock Rock Star
    Everybody isn’t aware that this was a book. I actually just found out. And some people (including me) were too young to read material like this when it came out. Spoiler Alert really should have been posted…I feel like I know half of the movie.
  75. Shia
    Why should Monique get an oscar that loud azz heifer wasnt acting she was being herself. I think she is as funny as a bad case of appendicitis and she too goddamn loud to be on at 11 pm. I am so tired of the “yeah sugar, yeah baby” Just give Wendy Williams her set and guest and Wendy’s show would kill.
  76. Mock Rock Star
    @The folks who responded to me (if they care to return)
    How the hell can Tyler Perry be totally behind a movie based on a book that was released in 1996…please tell me since you are so smart. BTW, the lady who wrote the book lived in New York and I don’t know Tyler’s story like that, but I think he was living in New Orleans during that time.
    The name of the movie is called “Precious” Based on a book called Push by Sapphire” Ding, ding, ding…there go your spoiler alert in the title. Come on people are you all really this slow???
  77. candylicker
    First they are not going to give Mo an oscar cause she aint Halley and she aint screwing. Two they are not going to give this movie anything because they won’t even SHOW this movie everywhere. I am so disgusted that I have to drive 50+ miles to see this movie – it’s bullsheet.
  78. Kierah
    The movie is getting wider release this weekend. Indie films take longer to roll out- if ever.
    I have to say I’ve never been so uncomfortable in a movie theatre. I was on the verge of walking out a couple of times, unsure if I could go where this film was trying to take me.
    It’s that good. Even though I couldn’t relate to Precious, the story affected me. You’d have to a have a hole in your soul not to be touched by this film.
  79. foxxy
    I would have loved to have had the opportunity to view the movie. the only problem is i live in Fresno California and they did not bring the movie to our city at all. Our people could not believe that we were allowed the opportunity to view the movie. I guess blacks on the big screen are only accepted if the white folkes an relate. This is actually movie that all can relate to, it not only exists in the black families but the whites, hispanics etc also. I guess they jus hide it and act as though it doesn’t exist.Then our children & family services end up with there children. I thought we were p***** discrimnation on certain levels. GUESS NOT!
  80. Its6amHoGetOut, finally saw that "Precious" sh*t on bootleg CD, Its overrated, the fat gorilla lookin' b*tch can barely speak, cheaply done like all Emmitt Perry projects and you'll only like it if you can relate to it; I cant........
    @ Mock,
    Executive produced by Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry, thats what it said in the beginning and closing credits of the bootleg DVD I saw last night!
    0 to 1 oscar nomination, maybe….
    F*ck! that b*tch was ugly!
  81. I'mjustsayin'
    Was it just me or did anyone else think that the girls in the pre-GED cl***** were off-the-chain authentic and hilarious?
  82. leslie
    Did Bossip read the book? It would answer a lot of their questions
  83. [...] Mo’Nique has addressed the controversy, saying: “Baby, people gonna talk. It comes with the territory. But didn’t [...]
  84. Amarie4911
    I read the book years ago and I was a little hesitant to see the movie but I think that it did a great job of conveying the message of the book that most people could stomach instead of reading the brutal and graphic book. I loved all of the characters and while I am no fan of Mariah, she did a great job. People keep saying that she only had a small part and didn’t really connect with Precious in the way that Paula Patton did, but that was the point. Mariah’s role was that of a burned-out, tired and defensive social worker who was in way over her head. She wasn’t meant to be loving and caring and it wasn’t in her character to try to swoop down and carry Precious away from her horrible life. Great movie.
