I’m not a fan of Barkley, by any means, but I had to chuckle at this clip. The irony is not lost on me, however, that Barkley himself has been accused many times of crossing over. Sosa did physically what some men (and women) do psychologically.

Lord knows black Americans struggled with being color struck for many centuries and still struggle with it, but since the majority of them are darker complexions, they accepted the fact that even if one had one drop of black blood they were black. But when blacks of lighter complexions are in the majority, the “Say It Loud, I’m Black and I’m Proud” philosophy never was popular. Be they Arabs or Latins, if they have one drop of white blood, they for centuries consider themselves white, which of course is hard for black Americans to understand. The mixing of races was so predominant throughout the latin world that the majority of Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Venenzulians, etc are predominantly mulatto populations and they have a difficult time considering themselves blacks, as opposed to Haitian, Jamaicans, black Americans were remained predominantly dark skinned and less mixed. Word to the wise, bleaching of skin because you hate your dark complexions and features leads to internal poisoning of your organs and eventual early death. If you don’t believe that just ask Michael Jackson… that is in the afterlife.

If people think colorism is strickly an “African American” issue, you need to get out more. Dark peoples of the nation, i.e. Indians (from India), Latins, Asians, Africans, etc. have been deceived into believing white is right. Until people get their minds freed, colorism will exist forever.

It doesn’t necessarily mean they are self-hating IF they are with women they love, however, there are a lot of men who like white women because they believe they are superior. They believe the “white is right” mantra. Let’s face it, white women have always been considered the status of beauty in society. Many men have bought into that notion and believe that white women hold perfection in their hands and that to have one means “they’ve arrived.” In other words, they more highly of that ivory skin then they do their own. Thus the self-hatred. They don’t want a woman who looks like them, their mothers, grandmothers, aunts, cousins (yes I brought that up because it’s true).
Many men are colorstruck. Not all who enter IR relationships are that way though.

Very true. NPR had a segment this week on the market for bleaching cream in India, and the publicized perception of lighter skin being tantamount to success and beauty. A model was interviewed who said that his lighter skin tone opened more doors for him in the industry, and that lighter-skinned models obtain more commercial jobs and other gigs.
I’m reading an article now at washingtonpost.com about racial divisions in China, and the story states that there is a $100 million-a-year market for skin-whitening products. This quote took me aback:
Chen Juan, 27, a secretary in an English training school in Beijing, regularly uses skin-whitening products and carries an umbrella on summer days. “For me, the whiter, the better. Being white means pretty,” she said. “If someone looks too black, I feel they look countrified and like a farmer. . . . Being white is prettier than being black.”

I believe you misconstrued the gist of my post. Sammy Sosa may have desired to have lighter skin because of the *****ociated benefits, and some individuals who have never tried to lighten their skin have attempted to dis*****ociate themselves in other ways from their race/culture.

You won’t get any disagreement from me on this, and this comes from someone who was once called an “oreo” herself. But I’m not sure this applies to Barkley. He certainly doesn’t speak that properly.

I’ve noticed that there have been more articles/interviews on colorism since Sosa’s photos surfaced, and I think some of the root causes of a person’s perception that lighter skin is more desirable are universal. There is a subconscious belief among a number of people that anything *****ociated with “white” is better, and, depending on your culture, that comes from a variety of sources. I recall having a conversation with a Chinese-American friend of mine a few years ago about the history of the “field” and “house” slaves and colorism, and she told me that there are similar beliefs in China — lighter skin is *****ociated with the higher cl*****es.
If anything, Sosa’s physical change sheds light on what has sometimes been an issue that isn’t discussed openly, or even acknowledged.

Dominicans were slaves until 1844 but the slave mentality has survived until now. Ths Spaniards of Europe sold, traded and auctioned their ancestors off just like they did in America. The only difference is that their slave masters were from Spain not Britain. The strange thing is that the Dominicans are in love with the very people who enslaved them for centuries. They have their slave masters surname and they think because their last names are Spanish, that they are Spanish too. Their brains were totally warped during slavery but that does not mean they cannot overcome their love of their slave masters if they chose to do so. Whoever heard of slaves loving their slave masters the way the Dominicans do.

Yeah, it’s surprising how in the year 2009, people are still color struck and think that ‘white is right’, and I agree with Yum fruit about an expression of self love being the duplication of oneself…I had white men who wanted to have babies with me, but I wanted my baby to be black with the ability to grow an afro…you know? Anyway, white people are more diluted and frailer or the human race, that’s why them and the asians are more subject to osteoporosis and skin cancers and stuff than the darker races. Black people seem to generally be more psychologically and physically fortified than the lighter races, just my observation….and Sammy Sosa looks ridiculous, what makes him think that he’ll get more play in the business and social world when he looks like ‘Fire Marshall Bill’ now?

I hate people that speed in their cars. If Charles really does speed around like that I hope he gets the death penalty if he ever hurts someone. We know he has gotten a DUI before so he might be speeding drunk too.

The fact remains is that we are in the 21st century and the Obama Era. Blacks, Whites and all those in between need to stop being so ethnocentric that we can’t find beauty in others that are different from us. But let’s face it nothing is going to stop Whites from tanning their skin to appear darker and nothing is going to stop Blacks from straightening their hair and bleaching their skin (if they invented a product that really worked with no medical side effects). And eventhough Whites realize that constant tanning will give them skin cancer, they still continue find new ways to do it. Blacks and darken peoples of the world have been trying to bleach their skin white for years, using every excuse imagineable, from the fact that they may have a slight form of Virtiligo, like Michael Jackson, or they want to cleans themselves and have skin rejuvenation like Sosa. Well if this is the case, why not go darker instead of lighter and why did MJ continue to mutilate his face (what did that have to do with virtiligo) and why is Sosa now putting green contact lenses in his eyes if all he want’s to do is rejuvenate his skin.
I’ll never forget my aunt years ago tried bleaching her dark complexion to look lighter. She ended up looking like a racoon because she couldn’t apply the cream near her eyes and all it did was make a portion of her face look chalky and ashy.
I remember years ago in the 80s before weaves from India and China became popular when a company began info commercials marketing this hair straigher for black women. The black woman who did the commercial was seen joyfully shaking her hair all over the place praising this new type of hair straightening formula (although she herself probably had naturally straight hair that had nothing to do with the formula). Black women went in droves to buy the product. One news show showed that there were lines around the corner to buy the product. The company made a huge profit in a short period of time. Within six months however black women who had zeolously bought the product began complaining that all their hair was falling out and their scalps damaged permeantly. And naturally by the time the fraud was discovered and the law suits initiated, the company had closed shop and disappeared along with the spokeswoman.
The sad irony of Sosa case, is that, if he decides to market this skin rejuvenation product (or invest in it secretly), he will probably become a billionaire, because millions of darker people around the world would buy it. But then when its to late (months or years later) and the people begin realizing that the formula is actually poisoning their internal organs (like I believe it did MJ), it will be to late and that company who marketed the project will take their money and hide somewhere overseas.
The idiotic woman who keeps wanting people on this site to condone her buttock bleaching scheme, will also come to realize that she may have become to shades lighter on the butt but the chemicles were also filtering into her internal organs, especially her uterous and caused her future children to come out as albinos. Perhaps only then will she stop asking people for a butt peal (LOL)
Nothing wrong with people trying to make themselves more attractive, but people must realize that trying to alter too much what God made has its consequences!!!

Although i appreciate your post, I don’t think that skin color has anything to do with this because the range of skin color is about the same among the people of the African diaspora. The DR and Haiti are the same island divided by a menial and slight border. If someone like Rhianna, who is from Barbados can consider herself black then so can Sammy Sosa. It is just because Afro-latinos often feel that they are better than black Americans because they have a so-called culture. Well like I told my ex-boyfriend, who was Dominican you are all the same they just dropped your ***** of first, and the people who owned you spoke Spanish not English or French, hence why your name is Jose and not Joseph. All black people from Ethiopia to St. Lucia to Mississippi are subject to the implications of colonialism and/or slavery through their obsession with color resulting in colorism among them.
