Out of Pocket: UK Removes Black Couple in Popular Movie Poster
Posted by Bossip Staff
Universal changed “Couples Retreat” marketing for the film’s UK release. The company removed the black actors from both the poster’s photo and the list of stars in the type list.
Faizon Love and Tasha Smith were completely taken off the poster and we can’t help but wonder why. We don’t know how important their roles are in the film, but for them to be featured in the initial poster and then be taken off, is a bit suspect.
Universal said it regretted causing any offense, and it has abandoned plans to use the revised poster in other countries. A Universal spokesman said the revised advertisment was aimed ‘to simplify’ the poster to actors who are the most recognizable in international markets. SMH

Well, damn. They are waaaayyyy back yonder in the original poster anyway. Well, the movie turned out to be an utter failure as long as their checks cleared, who cares?
Hollywood better recognize. While they are trying to keep blacks in the background of “their” movies, “our” movies are KILLING it at the box office (i.e. Precious and This is It). They better embrace all this black talent while they still can.

Perhaps you should tell the 17 million back people in the UK to boycott their country.

1) The United Kingdom didn’t make the decision to change the poster–Universal pictures did, so even if a boycott is in order, with your logic, you’d be boycotting the wrong people.
2) How does a country that already have millions of black people boycott their home anyway?
3) I *****ume you are in the US, which has had it’s fair share of racist practices. What have you done to boycott your own country?
Gimmeabreak 78
11/16/09, 12:26:pm
Bossip, maybe you should consider re-wording the title of this article because it implies that the UK itself altered the poster, when the article actually states that Universal altered it. Maybe people wouldn’t be confused then.
Of course, doing that would imply that you have basic writing skills, and I’m sure you wouldn’t want to give your readers the wrong impression.

I have seen this before and it was even more blatant. I live in San Diego and attended the Womans Film festival and was treated to a special screening of the movie “Rachel Getting Married” Great film-was nominated for an Oscar-but when it finally came out-I noticed all the promo photos had all white people in it-even the wedding shot is with her father walking her down the aisle-BUT SHE MARRIES A BLACK MAN!!! His family is all over the place in the movie! There is even a straight Jamaican/Haitian throw down reception! As a black woman I was offended they edited it to sell it to some demographic that might not watch it if they knew “Rachel getting married to a Negro” SMH

the movie is terrible but it didnt bomb and this is all hollywood they are still useing us as props to get black people to come out to the theaters they changed the poster because they know that this movue has already scored low with black folks so they are going to promote it as an all white cast with a couple black bit parts is racist to a certain extent but money is the overall reason

This is not the first time something like this has happened. Microsoft had a promotional ad that featured a black man in the U.S. This same photo had a white man’s face photoshopped over the black man’s face in the U.K. his hand were still black though.

Racism is everywhere. Bulletin?
For a hundred years companys have put what sells on the cover. If you notice Vince Vaughn is more prominent, he has a lei around his neck and there is a suitcase and it shows some of the beach.
They speak the King’s english and a “Retreat” is something different to them, like the “Loo” is the bathroom and the “Boot” is the trunk of the car. The UK poster actually reflects what the movie is about with american actors that are familiar to them. They went to Bali, but the US version looks like they’re in Hollywood.
All in all, they could have at least left their names in the poster. Dang!
C'mon Son!!!
11/16/09, 16:05:pm
BOSSIP! STOP THE NONSENSE!

The movie business is a BUSINESS. Companies spend their own money on advertising to make MONEY. If black actors don’t make money overseas, why would they put them on the poster?
Movie studios aren’t in the AFFIRMATIVE ACTION business, they are in the MONEY MAKING business. Anyone who is offended by the decision to redo poster doesn’t understand business and is an immature IDIOT who is probably broke.

This has been done to Blacks in ads for years. Whites don’t like to use Black people in their ads because most whites don’t like Black people. This is a bi-product of the indoctrination of the false notion of white supremacy upon whites and Blacks.
