White Couple Who Financed ‘Precious’ To Make Millions
Posted by Bossip Staff
The WSJ has an interesting piece about a Colorado couple who stepped up to the plate and put up $12 million of their personal money to finance the sleeper hit ‘Precious.’ What BOSSIP wants to know, is why can’t more Black millionaires step up, take some risks, and bring our diverse experiences to the screen?
The 36-year-old Ms. Siegel-Magness runs her own clothing company called So Low, which began with an underwear line for low-rise jeans. Her parents started the tea company Celestial Seasonings, where she worked growing up. Mr. Magness, 55, whose parents began the cable company Tele-Communications Inc. that later merged with AT&T, is a cattle rancher and oversees an investment group.
Their foray into film financing and producing wasn’t part of a carefully planned strategy. “When I began to get outside counseling from Hollywood about what we had done, people were mortified,” remembers Ms. Siegel-Magness. “They told us we should have instead invested in this or that fund to make 11 different movies, that we were crazy for financing an African-American movie about incest,” she says.

@Nique, but why do Oprah and Tyler have to backk ALL the good black films? There are enough other black actors and actresses in Hollywood who could have thrown together 12 Mill for this critically acclaimed movie, but they didn’t support it. This book been out almost a decade, and it took 2 whites to bring it to the screen.

@Cynthia…….I thought so too. This movie was made almost 3yrs ago. It was suppose to be released last year. At that time Oprah or Tyler was not attached. I don’t think it was getting any buzz and somehow they both stepped in to help “PROMOTE” the movie. In return they get BIG titles as executive producers. I don’t think either one was involved in financing or filming.

They dont HAVE to back all the good films. But I would think that they would want to seeing that they have made sure their names are PLASTERED all over the movie….I couldnt tell you who the director was off the top of my head but Oprah and Tyler have made sure they drill in our heads that they were apart of it. And yes there’re some black actors/actresses who couldve put together this money- but very few of them have that kind of money. 12 milli to Oprah and Tyler is toilet paper money…

You people do not know that it was not just 12 million total to get the project made, come on people get a clue. Oprah and Tyler produced the movie. Yes I agree others could have stepped up and now maybe we will. Denzel and Spike have done many movies were he helped fund it, the point is you need all the facts before you start talking ish, wait this is Bossip no you dont, but part of the reason ish dont work is cuz we never give each other the benefit of the doubt.

I think it’s sad that rich black don’t invest more. The problem with us is that we only think about having wealth for one generation. Just enough to have a mansion, a couple of cars & experience exotic vacations. For some reason we don’t look out for our kids, grandkids and so on. Like Chris Rock said, blacks have the type of money that you can blow in one summer with a bad investment & a crack habit. The Rockefellas & the Phillip Morris family have the type of wealth that the family have to go to the board of directors to get money. The directors will not give you 100k to take to the strip club to “MAKE IT RAIN”. If you have a habit, they won’t give you money. That is why their money last for more than 10 generations.
The Hilton sisters just got cut off. Before Paris became a celebrity $lut they both stood to inherit 100mil. After her arrest her grandfather cut both sisters down to 5mil. I know her sister was furious cause she is nothing like Paris.

I agree with most on here. Financing is color blind its all about who has the $$ but there are some Black investors/actors that could have put up a share of that 12 million to get the ball rolling on Precious. We as a race need to learn to work together. THey said that white america wouldnt go to the movies to see a an all black movie… tell that to Tyler Perry who sitting on millions on top of millions.

You’re oversimplifying the situation.
Movie financing is no slam dunk. In fact, it’s one of the riskiest ventures out there. Let’s look at it this way: Say your net worth is $20 million. I approach you with a screenplay, in this case an adaption and then say, “I need financing and to make this movie. Cost? $12 million.” Would you do it? What if I told you that I have Mo’nique attached as the star, whose feature credits include “Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins”, and a several straight -to-dvd projects. Bet you’d really jump on it now, right? Tell you what, my co-star is first time actress who you’ve never seen before but TRUST me she’s perfect for the the role. Would you invest now? Show business is 75% BUSINESS and 25% SHOW because if the business isn’t right, the show will never happen. These rags to riches movie success stories happen one or twice a year ie. Blair Witch, Hustle and Flow and now Precious while hundreds of movies will never see the light of day.
There are hundreds upon thousands of screenplays sitting in the WGA (Writer’s Guild of America) that won’t see the light of day and it has little or nothing to due with OUR people not backing them. At the end of the day, it’s a business and it takes more than someone to throw money at it to bring it life. You must know what you’re getting into.

From what I understand and/or learned is that many African American directors do not have the financial funding backing to produce, promote and flip the bill for movies. I am not surprised that a white person has funded this movie and I never thought that Oprah/Tyler did I thought they just simply promoted it. I think of Spielbergh who I believed did the Color Purple or directed the movie.
I do not know if anyone remembers but back in the day on BET (which I no longer watch)had something very similar to The View but w/ALL black women, but Morris Chestnut was saying how big egos amongst the handful of black actors/actresses how stunt the growth and unity of black people breaking out in films and producing films.

I agree with all said, but I look at it also as many black people may invest wisely and may very well financially back quality entertainment; you just don’t hear about it.
As Jamaica mentioned, 20 comments here, 115 in the Rick Ross/Bugsy post, some people are more interested in buffonery and the media knows that….therefore they supply. More than likely, Bossip only posted this to start a racial b*i*t*c*h*fest as opposed to intellectual conversation. It wasn’t “The Magness’ help fund the movie ‘Precious’, thats whats up.” It was White folx stepped up and funded Precious, why couldn’t black folx do it and why don’t they do it more?”
How do we know they don’t step up and fund it more? With the lack of positive and quality news out there, especially when it comes to black people, I wouldn’t be suprised if they do. We have to be more particular about what we subscribe to and what we believe. JMO

I do think that all too often many black moives seem to target a particular audience with not much substance. Movies like “Inkwell”, “Crooklyn”, “The Brothers” or one of my favorites “Stompin at the Savoy” are great quality black movies. I will definitely support quality substance black movies.

BOTH TYLER PERRY AND OPRAH WERE NOT INVOLVED IN THE MAKING OR PRODUCING OF THE MOVIE AT ALL. The movie wasn’t produced by Tyler and Oprah… It was presented by Tyler and Oprah. Meaning that as powerful influences in film and culture, they tied their names to it saying that they vouch for it. Kind of like Quentin Tarantino did with the movie Hostel. He didn’t produce it, but tied his name to it.

Im’ sure some of you heard the term ***** rich. This is what we do when we acheive wealth, we buy four nice cars (minimum) a house that we can’t afford, bling, Gucci, Louis Vouton, Channel, more bling, lil Ray Ray some new Jordans and thats about it. The very first thing that we should do is buy an annuity for our kidds or perhaps some mutual funds, at least a damn whole life insurance policy. Asking us to take risk with first generational weath is like pulling teeth. We just don’t get it. I remember about 10 years ago I presented an opportunity for a atty friend of mine, which required a $250,000 investment which was minimal compaired to the return, He put me through so much nonsense that I backed out of the deal and presented it to a white person who jumped on it like there was no tomorrow. The white person made about $600,000 on the deal and gave me a finders fee of $15,000. This is what we as a people need to do. It begins with trust.

Tyler and Oprah are not making any money off of this movie. All of what would be their proceeds are being donated to charity. Personally, I’m so glad they lent their names to the film. If that’s what it takes to help for promotions and high viewership, then so be it. I believe they saw an opportunity to be a part of something very special that would send a message, and touch hearts, minds and souls. I cannot wait to see this movie.

Who the hell would want to help a self hating coon. Some of you clowns seriously believe that the black folk who could help our communities are like you. No. They have strong black families whether they be doctors, lawyers, CEO’s. They just get tired of looking at some of you and shake their heads and move on in disgust. Willie Lynch was real. Whether it be a movie, business, etc.. there is real dissension within the black race. Understand the game. People invest to make money. There’s alot of talk about athletes making money, actors, etc. The owners of the team make multi-million dollar investments in those players to make multi-billion dollar profits. Same with Hollywood. If it don’t make dollars, it don’t make sense. Race is more important to black folk than it is to others. Black folk all caught up and emotional. Think about the pimp and his workers. The pimp don’t care about your personal hangups, he just want the paper. If you don’t get it for him someone else will. White america been pimping black folk for 400+ years and could care less whether blacks like it or not…If the blacks won’t somebody else will….like other racial groups who come over here and exceed the black race. They’re being pimped too, but they just negotiated differently. Wake up. How will anyone take black folk seriously when that Willie Lynch theory has been followed to the letter? Still waiting for white folk to care about black folk conditions….GTFOH. They have their own s#it to worry about, like pedophiles, serial killers, bankers stealing money, etc…and you want white folk to care about black issues. What’s in it for them?

This movie was very good, I encourage everyone to go and see it. It will be coming out nationwide on the 20th of November. That is the way I understand it.
We don’t need to debate about who/how/why it was bought to fruition, I am just glad it was.
The said thing to me, is that more black people will now go and see it, now that they hear that Oprah and Tyler truly had nothing to do with this movie coming out.

There are many ways black celebs could have made this happen. For instance, they could have drawn up an agreement to create a temporary investment team for a few gigs whereas 12 celebs big each put up a million. Of course the return investment would be split by many, but his is how black celebs can pool together and invest in such a gig as well. Oprah, Tyler, Will Smith, a few athletes, could have each invested in this movie.

I’m glad they were able to look past the color issues (potential audience backlash) and clearly see the potential.

It was to my understanding that Tyler Perry and Oprah Financed the movie and all proceeds would go to charity. If that wasn’t the case, I would have watched a bootleg copy…lol Just keeping it real! I have to research this story further before making *****umptions.

To the people that said the movie cost more than $12 million…it didn’t. This is an independently produced film, and many of them usually cost about $10 million or less. Even most of Tyler Perry’s own films cost $12 – $15 million or less to produce (more money is spent on promotion). Only major studio films typically get budgets of $30 to $50 million+.
And it’s been said here already, but let me reiterate it again: neither Tyler Perry nor Oprah had a hand or a dollar in the actual production of the film. Lee Daniels Both came aboard as executive producers after the *completed* film’s success on the film circuit, and signed on to help promote the film.
