Top rapper who was a part of a successful rap group that changed the dynamics of hip-hop with their philosophical rhymes over hard-core beats. Craig garnered attention because of his rugged good looks that made him a standout in the group.
“Drake”
He was a member of one of the most popular R&B groups. They had several number one Billboard hits, and the young girls loved him because the adorable, sexy front singer, Drake had a flamboyant stage presence. He was very eccentric in his style, defying more conventional looks in his appearance. Drake didn’t hold back when he performed either…showing his muscular frame. [He] branched out on his own as a solo artist and had a huge hit single which led to a few acing roles in major motion pictures.
“Eli”
A popular multiplatinum rapper who started his own label. Eli was a forced to be reckoned with. He flew out the gate with his debut album and would become a mainstay in the ever-changing Hip Hop industry. He has been hailed as one of the greatest rappers to bless the mic.
“Quinn”
He had a velvet melodic voice and broke out with a sensual single in the late 90’s. His self-titled debut album produced two top Billboard hits.
“Galvin”
Once a part of a legendary R&B group who had experienced a brief stint as a successful solo artist, was allegedly linked romantically to an A-list male actor.

However, after reading this interview…which I found to be well-done (kudos Bossip), I find this guy rather insightful, poignant and relevant!!
Seems that he’s peeling back layers in the hip hop community that others simply gossip or speculate about. Even though I have no plans to buy the book, I can appreciate that he makes it clear that it is NOT a tell all, but his life story/experiences. I find Mr. Dean completely disingenuous when he says that this “memoir” isn’t really about gay rappers, but about his own coming of age and acceptance of his sexuality. OF COURSE it’s about the gay rappers. That’s the only reason why the publisher agreed to publish and market it. Otherwise, there’d be no other reason to read it, nothing to distinguish it from the countless books that broach the subject of growing up poor, black and gay. The gay rapper angle is the hook and it’s a hook that remains empty because Mr. Dean doesn’t tell us anything that Wendy Williams didn’t say first over ten years ago.
Mr. Dean’s account cannot survive academic or intellectual scrutiny. I would sooner believe that the world is flat than believe anything he has to say in his “memoir.” Thus, I won’t dare purchase it.

Plus he’s more diversified than Puffy as the description suggests. It’s Russell.

I just saw your post on the Obama thread. I love The Huffington Post, and I check it nearly every day — they break a lot of stories, and I love the commentaries. I like Jack and Jill because they give the black perspective on the campaign, and the bloggers there are very bright and on top of all the goings-on. I also like Politico. There’s going to be a big protest this Saturday in DC at the DNC rules committee meeting, so I’m sure there will be a lot of national coverage.

@NYC, I hear ya…I can relate with the “character **********ination” bit as I was victim of some vicious imposters for months. Unfortunately, with public figures, this type of gossip comes with the territory and it seems like the only recourse celebs have is to sue if slander does in fact occur. Not sure what they could do in a case like this since the author is covering his butt and leaving the *****umptions up to the general public.
I think it would suck (no pun intended) if any of those listed were in fact…not gay, because from this book, rumors can, and probably spread like wild fire.

@SonofBaldwin–I perfectly understand what you are saying, but I understood this book to be more about the author and HIS life, and not necessarily about “outing” some hip-hop artists. I don’t think the names of these artists are really relevant in the context of this book. He is using these DL artists as mere references to a segment of the hip-hop culture that exist. Now, is he using these “guess-who’s” as a marketing tactic? Absolutely. Sex and gossip sells, and he’s doing it in a way that is not revealing or disrupting the lives of these “characters”. Besides, memoirs are some of the hardest books to get published. I don’t think he’s looking for any type of literary awards for this book, but he just wants to get his message across.

The level of ignorance and subliteracy on this board is mind boggling. I don’t know what to do about the latter but the ignorance? I’m going to try something:
First, the blind items in the book are fun, people. I’m no hip hop afficianado but anyone who’s ever opened an issue of Vibe, People or grew up with MTV and BET in the background can make an “educated” guess as to who these characters may be (or at least narrow them down to a couple of people).
Second, we are not talking about our policy makers and world leaders here. What a bunch of weed smoking and ecstasy popping rich today-gone tomorrow rappers do in thier free time should hardly be suprising, considering their lyrics, clownish fashion sense and violent, or at least dubious, backgrounds.
But more importantly, doesn’t anyone find it ironic that so many people here at once spew hate toward gays and yet expect these closeted stars and professionals to come out to a community waiting to reject them? What incentive are you giving your man or your brother or your sister or whomever to come out if you think they are inherently “nasty”? And have you ever thought of how terrifying it may be to discover you are gay, especially if you are black? Remember, the first homophobe every queer ever meets is themselves. And there is no harder rejection than unrequited self love.
As long as we continue to reject gay brothers and sisters in our community they will hide their true feelings and lead double lives. Unlike gays who live openly and are regularly exposed to HIV prevention, the topics surrounding it and the tragic fate of infected friends and acquaintances, its easy for the DL types to pretend their acts aren’t dangerous without protection or that getting tested is too scary or that HIV/AIDS doesn’t exist anymore (or whatever the rationale is). In fact, it’s easy to pretend they never happened at all for these DL folks because they compartmentalize this lifestyle from their mainstream life. The one they consider real and self-validating. The life they use to hide from haters like many posting here.
Blacks have for so long been the leaders in style, music, and so many other areas of the arts and culture. Why do we persist to lag behind whites in areas like education, professional networking and, yes, social open-mindedness? Black women and children are paying the unwitting cost for this hate and ignorance. The remedy? Stop objectifying and socially criminalizing homosexuality in the black community. Let our gay sons and daughters grow up feeling safe, loved and equal to others. Then there is no self-hatred by gay blacks, no need for down low life — and no excuse for the kind of two-timing lifestyle that, if anything comes out of this book, has finally come to a head.

Sorry Jay. You make some valid points but I’m not buying. Yes the hip hop and black culture as a whole needs to start opening our minds and hearts to the gay community. Hatred is an awful thing. But this book is not a step in that direction. Let’s be real. This is an opportunistic stunt. If the author wanted to truly fight for social change, why not tell the true stories of those out there in our communities who face homophobia and stereotyping? Why not speak to some of our young adults about the battles they have faced and all the good that they are reaching for? And even then that is just *****uming. What about those who are just enjoying life. Why not? Because silly exposes have a hype and sell books. I’m not supporting this ridiculous book. This man is trying to get paid off of “exposing” other people. Am I shocked about any of the riddles in this book? No. Of course there are gay superstars in the hip-hop world. But what does answering some silly riddle do for me? Nothing. These are people who are going to deny any and all rumors in this book. If anything, in fear, their bashing and self hatred may be more hurtful than anything else. Let’s not make this book into something that it isn’t. This is someone’s 15 minutes of fame and an attempt to cash in. I’ll get excited when someone starts rebuilding the neighborhoods in Baltimore and starts adopting American black babies in this country who need a home.Or when someone figures out how our country allowed the disenfranchisement of thousands of blacks in the 2000 election. Write some books about that.
It is very sad that we have to guess the DLs. I do not know why people are surprised about who’s gay. Just because someone doesn’t look gay does not mean that they aren’t. It has been rumored that everyone that was mentioned in these comments are gay. So, it doesn’t surprise me at all. In fact I truly believe most of it. It doesn’t mean that they cannot sing, write nor rap well. It simply means that they have a diversified sexual preference. I truly think the guy was referring to Jay Z as Eli because J has been able to stay on top of the rap game through all of the changes. I think that Bey knows it as well because in an interview she said she did not oppose to someone being gay because her uncle was gay and that he gave her a different outlook toward gays. There are lots of women that are in relationships with gay men and allow these men to hide behind them in a relationship. I love JZ’s music and it hurts to say anything bad about him but every time he takes a pic with B there is always another man in the picture with them. Hell he just started sitting with her at the awards because he used to sit with Pharell. Got to admit that though these guys may be on the DL they are all definitely talented. I was just thinking on that the other day, whether or not people are born gay, or just become that way because of past experiences that they either remember or block out. And instead of living life being ashamed, they just embrace this resulting urge/preference and move on and try to be the best they can be in this life. I think that this is why gay people, both men and women, tend to be the most expressive and creative beings. They are turning all that confusion and negativity into something positive and beautiful.

One’s moral conscience says that one does not out someone for “fun.” One does it as a civic responsibility to dismantle a system of oppression. Thus, a secretly gay rapper who espouses homophobia needs to be outed and his hypocrisy exposed.
Jay, you’ve been going from site to site to site defending this book as though you wrote it. My suspicion is that either you’re the author or publicist in disguise, or you’re a friend of the author. In any case, you have a difficult job ahead of you. It’s hard to defend the indefensible.

Thanks to some of you who took the time to read my long comment. I just want to make it clear that I have no relationship with the author and I certainly am not Terrance Dean.
In response to SonofBaldwin’s implication that I think outing people should be fun, I just want to say that that’s not a blanket truism and not what I meant by enjoying the blind items. Well, not really. If someone is gay and their an actor or a balladeer or producer who’s agent tells them to keep it on the dl that’s one thing. But if they are a performer who perpetuates homophobia that’s another. If someone is going to write and promote homophobia in their lyrics and interviews, and then engage in homosexual acts behind closed doors, then they kind of deserve to be outed. Because they are tormenting young (and older, in Dean’s case) gay men and women, encouraging hate crimes by straight and closeted men and women, while enjoying a secret gay lifestyle. Hypocrites, regardless of their nature, all deserve to be outed. I stand by that.

Have you all even read the book? I’m not someone who thinks you need to walk in a gutter to believe its dirty for yourself but some things are worth investigating for oneself. Yet in our media-hyped age, so much is reviewed and previewed and thought out for us that many of us don’t give ourselves a chance to look into things for ourselves.
When this book first came out, I read one review in Newsweek, found the review and an excerpt intriguing and picked it up and read it in a few hours. Had I read all of these blogs surrounding the controversy, listened to him interviewed by Wendy Williams and became as immersed as some of you in limiting my exposure to “Hiding” to the discourse surrounding the blind items — which are sprinkled in the book like light rain drizzle rather than the storm one would think the blind items are in Dean’s book (and it’s marketed that way for this very result), I would probably not have read it, either. But I did read it and if you haven’t, what you should be criticizing is the lop-sided focus on all of these blind items when the book really isn’t about that at all. It’s really a coming of age story, a memoir in black of Bright Lights, Big City or (kind of) The Great Gatsby. It’s about the culture of hiding in a world already too invisible. And as a gay man from the Detroit area, where the author is from, I couldn’t help but be intrigued. No it wasn’t highbrow literature. It wasn’t James Baldwin. It was an honest exploration of someone’s equally sad and scary yet exciting and very stimulating, if slow, growth into black gay manhood. This guy had so much resistance to his making anything of himself at all that’s its amazing he even survived. The fact that he has a lisp (as we all heard on Wendy’s show) only serves to illustrate the ultimate denial he and others live in: they think they’re on the dl but they’re all more ostensibly gay looking, sounding and acting than some openly gay people I know, including myself. And if you’ve read the book, you know that at the end he acknowledges that the only person he managed to fool all along is…? Guess. (Himself, for the dim bulbs out there.)
If you’re curious enough to challenge something, investigate it. Otherwise, you’re falling for the same disjointed thinking and sheep herding that makes some people in West Virginia and Kentucky think Barack Obama is Muslim. I say read the book and then critique it or swim in ignorance.
Say what you want about Dean’s book reviews/excertpts, but what many of you people are critiquing is someone else’s *****ysis of the book or its excerpts which, after a few chapters, become less and less interesting as one becomes more and more involved in the author’s narrative and those of the individual’s he does name in the book (and some of them are famous too,by the way).

If you’ve read the book, is it worth buying? Each guy that he listed could be anyone. For instance, who played Craig in all of the Friday movies? Which rapper has used the term EI? Could that be a reference to ELI? This same rapper has a good friend who’s a music mogul who has a lady on his arm at all times. I personally don’t think any of the guys that I’ve referenced are gay. There are hundreds of scenarios. He should have been a man and put the names out there. Or, at least made it more obvious. I hope that no one’s reputation is ruined because of this.

Smiley: First of all, the excerpts on this site are just snippets of the blind items. Some of these scenes involving these “X” characters go on for pages which lend more hints than the paragraphs above. The descriptions posted at the top of this page are just the introductions to the characters’ identities in the scene. I don’t know a lot about the hip hop world and I rarely read Vibe, never read XXL or the Source and only listen to hip hop if its on at the club and I was still able to figure out many of these blind items (at least, they’ve been verified by what others’ have said or written on the blogs) so I say, if you’re really curious, read the book or at least a few whole scenes and its easier to figure out. In fact, I think it was too easy with some items. He definitely gives you the clues. Think about what was on the radio/TV/cinemas at the time, who was in the news at that particular time, who looked like what when and you can easily figure it out.
In addition, has anybody noticed how there has not been a word out of the entertainment industry about this book. Every agent and publicist must have put masking tape over their clients’ mouths. That alone speaks volumes. I mean, hip-hop and Hollywood have never, ever been quieter.

Fiction is an invented narrative. One maybe based on real impressions or experiences but oriented most prominently in an invented series of cir*****stances concieved in the writer’s imagination. Dean’s book is a memoir — which is nonfiction, people (or, it is supposed to be if he writer is honest) — and if he wanted to make stuff up he wouldn’t have gotten published by a house like Simon and Schuster, especially after the diasaster surrounding “A Million Little Pieces.”
Again, the clues here are hand-picked snippets from scenes in the book. These aren’t even all the blind items he mentioned, just some of them. Many of these characters appear multiply throughout, so there are other chances to guess.
This is the first time I’ve had such a hard time finding really good dialogue about a book in the blogosphere and its sad. I’ve never read so many posters with such ferocious comments about a book they never even read. It’s all part of the whole aversion to homosexuality in this community that made this guy live and write this story, to me.

Actually, the white gossip sites like Gawker and Defamer and Socialitelife do have interesting and sometimes deep conversations in the chat/comment posts that start off about stupid gossip ***** like this but lead into more interesting issues, like what might be raised on a larger level by the (however trite) gossip itself. And as always disagreements ensue but that’s what makes it interesting, that’s what dialogues should do. Nothing has every been revealed in a room where everyone has the same opinion.

It’s a comment on here that said super head mentioned sleeping with Method man and that wasn’t the Method Man we know. Method man came on a radio station out here In Los Angeles and denied that. The method man she was speaking of was limp bizkit. I did hear rumors when out in New York that Method Man and Red Man were some *****gots. So I belive it’s Method Man. And yeah he should have named names he clearly used that as a plore to write his story and sell it. To me the book isn’t about the blind items. It’s not about the entertainment industry. It’s about a problem in black America that encourages gay or at least bisexual brothers to conceal thier sexuality at all costs, using women and conceiving children as the ultimate beards. This would simply be an ethical issue if it weren’t for the fact that black women have the highest rates of HIV/AIDS infection in the country. And that’s likely only because women’s bodies yield more symptoms of early infection than men as well as the fact that many women get blood tested as a routine course of pregnancy. If more brothers were tested before they became symptomatic the results would probably be devastating.
When you are openly gay you are exposed to HIV prevention, others who are infected and generally surrounded by people who insist on safe sex. The down low world is less oriented toward the reality of HIV/AIDS because it is a world that shuns, by nature, reality. Real feelings, real risks, real everything. That’s what this book is about to me. To me the only blind items in this book are those who can’t see how important it is that blacks rid ourselves of gay hate and gay blacks rid themselves of self hate and literally contaminating ourselves, our women and our unborn children with life-threatening diseases.
And by the way: how it is surprising that a group of muscled-up guys who sing and dance and act and love showing off their beautiful homes, well-stocked walk-in closets and fancy cars and that has influenced the way the whole world dresses, walks, talks and dances is gay? I mean, that’s what gay men have always been like! The tough facade is a red herring that’s finally starting to fade to pink.
Lastly, I encourage every one here who normally finds gay men offensive or appalling to think differently the next time you come across a brother (or sister) who appears to be or is clearly and openly gay. Reconsider your disgust for the very reason that he is honest with himself and those who trust him enough to be intimate with him. Because, at the very least, that person is not hiding. If you are a woman, he is not trying to date/marry/concieve a child with you and go hook up with other men behind your back. And if you are a straight brother, contrary to what a lot of straight people believe, he does not want to try anything with you. (For every hot straight guy, there’s two gay ones out there. Finding someone attractive and making the moves on them are worlds apart. In fact, it’s just as scary and nerve-wracking for gays to bust a move on someone new as it is for guys to summon the courage to hit on a girl, let alone someone who isn’t even on the same team.) Most openly gay guys not only want someone they can go to dinner or the movies with, but also someone who finds them attractive in return, not someone to meet for sex in hotel rooms and never see each other again. And certainly not someone who’s not gay or too uptight or unsure of themselves to have a good time in the sack. So save your homophobia for the guys without the ***** to be who they really are. The cowards out there infecting and confusing the hell out of all the good sisters out there who just want a good man. Now that’s a *****got, to me.
First of all jay I am really Camel’s Wife. Secondly I totally agree with what you have to say. I personally do not have any problems with gay guys. My two best friends are gay guys. I know it is hard for them. They are not down low brothers but they are both in the corporate business world and have a certain image to uphold. everyone knows they are gay. but they don’t go around discussing it. i really wish more men and women who like the same sex would just say they do and then move on. Who one falls in love with is their business. Being gay is not about sex it just seems that way. but heteros like myself have sex with their partners too. however, coming out am sure is hard depending on their careers such as the music industry. by the way I finished the book last night. The book is about him and his experience in the industry and his struggles with himself being in that atmosphere. As far as the blind items yes I have to admit i did try to figure some out. some are confusing and some i just don’t care.

I’m surprised that you would think after finishing the book that I might be Terrance because I don’t think that I write anything like him. I am a writer, though, which is why my posts are so damn long (it’s an occupational hazard)and I obviously have a personal investment in the topc Dean described. But I am not Terrance Dean (I don’t think he’s the best writer or had the best editor and if it were my book I would have chosen, at the very least, better cover art). So if I seem more p*****ionate than most here its not because I am him or connected in any way to him but rather because I really wish people would think more openly and critically about the subject, beyond the blind items, as you did.
Having said that, I found the blind items fun to decipher, sometimes shocking to discover, and a tantilzing break from the sad life story he told.
I really like your other comments, though. For example, I’m not out at my job, either. I work for an advertising agency but unlike most creative firms mine is very conservative, as is the city I live in right now, and there are few gays (everyone is married with children). I don’t do the drinks after work thing (my coworkers are astonishingly dull and boring, to me) and I don’t share my sexuality or much else with others at this job because a)most people just *****ume I’m straight, (which always surprises me…) at least judging from the questions people ask me and I don’t feel like announcing it, and b)I’m already the black guy. I don’t need two token slots. lol
As for being gay not being about sex, I have to disagree, even though I know you mean to say that its more than just sex. But as animals, we humans are driven very much by our primitive urges and sexual desire is the strongest — it’s our drive to propagate the species, even if its not directed toward child conception. So while it is a sexually driven orientation, like straight love, as one matures it becomes ultimately about finding a companion. Because gay men are a)men and b)not always encouraged to look for Mr. Right as opposed to Mr.Tonight, the gay lifestyle may comprise a very sexually driven experience. For guys on the dl its an exclusively sexually driven experience which I think makes them feel even more perverse for their indulgences. It feels differently to spend all night being intimate with the lover you share your life story with, go to dinner with, and who you love than it does to have a night with a complete stranger, which I think makes a lot of these dl guys feel even worse about themselves and more desperate to conceal this part of their lifestyle.
