It was like the Wild Wild West last night up in Harlem:
“Six teens were found near Harlem’s Marcus Garvey Park, where a crowd had gathered. It was not immediately clear whether they were wounded at the park or as they fled when gunfire erupted about 10:15 p.m. Monday, police said.
The victims — between the ages of 13 and 18 — were found on several blocks along Lenox Avenue, from 125th Street to 128th Street. They had been shot in the chest, thigh, torso, abdomen or foot, police said. A 15-year-old girl had been grazed on the forehead. No arrests had been made.
Police flooded the area and blocked off streets in the hours after the shooting at the park as they searched for suspects. Residents were told to go inside their homes. Two men, ages 26 and 20, were wounded in unrelated shootings about half an hour before and after violence broke out at the park, police said.”

I heard about this on the news this morning-there were some other shootings in Queens too. Sometimes I feel like it’s the end o’ days.
OMG!!! It is a mess out there. Why were 13 years old out at 10:15pm on a school night? Am i that daggone old? My mother wasn’t going for any of that. I do pray that all these people will be okay though. This is truly truly sad.
At the time I post this, 277 comments were left on the article about the DL bros in hip hop…and only 3 (including myself) posted here. This goes to show that we as a people are sorely missing the point and that we are surely failing our children. The priorities of cyber*****e and in real life are warped, twisted, and out of place. SMH…

Amen and hallelujah!! I could not have said it better. People want to post 1,000s of comments about how rich/sucessful a celebrity is; or who’s on the DL; or how such & such is snugged up with such & such, but they won’t dare to comment on these type of topics. They’re in denial and minds are limited. Entertainment is what feed their souls, not the humanity and the TRUTH.

Damn! When I was a teenager, I had to be off the phone by 10pm. I sure as hell wasn’t out doors that time of night. Where in the hell are the parents? In this day in age, how can you not be terrified to let your kids out of the house, at night? I just don’t understand this. This is so sad.
I remember when fights were considered to be bad and horrible. But now that shooting is the thing to do, those fights don’t seem nearly as bad as we thought. What a shame. What’s going to be going on 2-3 generations from now?

Back in the day you shot the fair one. IF you lost you were the talk of the street for the rest of the day and then you went on about your life as did everyone else. Now a day they aren’t trying to see these people walk away from a situation. Shooting up kids. It is in the streets in the school. The kids aren’t safe anywhere. As I said up until I was 17 when i left home I had to be in the house by 9:00pm (and that was a lucky day really 8:30pm) and in the bed by 10:30pm. There is nothing in the street after dark but trouble. This is very sad. I am from NY BX Stand up! And I have seen things deteriorate at a rapid rate as I grew up. Yong kids are becoming more and more brazen and terrorizing the streets. I don’t know what will stop it but I am willing to fight to find out so this world can be a little safer for my children.

I remember when Harlem was the place to party! I also remember back in the day that real *****s would knuckle up or at least go head up.
Now it seems as if a gun easily solves all the answers! It’s a damn shame! What’s really pitiful is seeing these young ones going to prison–scared as *****!!!!!!
I guess they think it’s all fun and games until those bars slam shut. That’s when the real ***** comes out. It’s just sad that it has to come to that.
Personally–I think they’re doing the job for “them” by killing off our own. We don’t lose one life that way–we lose two!

My cousin is 19 or 20 years old. A few years ago, he got charged with murder. What supposedely happened was that him and a few of his friends were joy riding late at night and they ran into some guy that they didn’t like or something like that. Well, they cornered the guy off and shot and killed him (or something to that effect). Turns out the guy they shot was some hotshot basketball player for a college in California. To make a long story short, this happened when my cousin was about 16 or 17 years old and now he is spending the rest of his life in Angola for killing another young boy he didn’t really know over no good reason. What a waste. He (my cousin) was really a smart young man and drop dead gorgeous. And he even had a scholarship for basketball. But he wanted to be hard and thug so bad and now he will have to be hard for real while he’s in Angola. I bet if he had to do all that ***** over again, he wouldn’t have even been out of the house that night. Young kids take heed.
I don’t understand these young kids fascination with being hard and thuggish. Every thug I know from school, I mean every last one, is either locked up, in jail or aint doin *****. That sure isn’t appealing to me at all! SMH at these ignorant young kids.

I don’t understand these parents. There are kids in my neighborhood, 5,6…10 years old, that hang outside all times of the night. The other day…it was about 11:30…I was pulling into the parking lot and there were a bunch of elementary school age kids playing outside.
And lawd…don’t get me started on the language that come of out their mouth.
What people don’t realize is that its summer, school is out and those kids in that particular age group have absolutely nothing to do to keep themselves occupied and out of trouble.
They most likely have no cable tv, Mama’s at work, Dad’s in jail or not at home, they are bored, so they go out and hang on the corner.
Imagine how many young females will be getting wild, growing up too fast and becoming pregnant during the next 2 1/2 months. And imagine how many young males will be getting shot, put into juvie or entering the world of drug dealing.
We need outlets for these kids to find something to do. Pools, safe basketball courts, sleep away camps, get them interested into going to the library, free tickets to see movies,tutoring-because you know they didn’t have all A’s, counseling, game halls,mentors, anything, that’s what we had in New Orleans in the 90’s when things were very wild there and it kept plenty of kids safe and secure.
If they have nothing, they’re most likely to do something their little *****es have no business doing.
I remember my cousins and I used to be out late during the summer BUT our parents and grandparents, aunts, uncles and everyone else we knew were out there too. On our porches, playing cards, board games, having seafood boils, listening to music, just enjoying each other. So being out at a particular hour isnt always a bad or negative thing. Especially if you dont have to get up and go to school in the morning.
Chances are Shameka and Jamal’s Mama didn’t even know they were out of the house.
I hope all of the kids recover from their injuries and I pray that those shootings aren’t a precursor of whats to come for the upcoming weeks.

I pray for the victims and their families, as well as the shooters. I too am a survivor of a drive-by shooting and it’s a terrible, horrible ordeal to try to get over. I was shot 4 times in the back and arm and none of the bullets were meant for me. All I can say is God please help us because right now it seems that we can’t help ourselves. And for the record I am a grown woman and was just leaving the club after a cook-out, so really it can happen to anyone at anytime. BE BLESSED!

Thats the problem right there. Black people need to be less undertanding of criminals in their midst. Even though you have the same skin color, you are not on the same team. I don’t consider white criminals my brothers, and I have no sympathy for them.

1. You can’t help folk that don’t want to be helped. There are programs that these kids can go to, but parents WON’T let them go. They would rather have that child at home or on the street corner.
2. We have let too many folk (Al, Jesse, NAACP) coontinue to point the finger at WHITE folk. Sorry not all this on the footstpes of white folk.
3. We don’t speak out when one of our folks do wrong. See R. Kelly, Kobe, Pacman, Jena 6 and ESPECIALLY Vick. When this stuff happened how many folks explained what these guys did was wrong? Or did they blame white folks?
4. We don’t encourage education. Smart kids play dumb just to avoid getting beat up by dumb cl*****mates. How many of you have kids that have clasmates NOT in their right grade? Have any of you ever met a 17 year old 6th grader? I have.
5. We don’t encourage reading, writing, or hobbies anymore.
6. We don’t call out BET and other networks for a LAck OF DIVERSITY IN THE BLACK IMAGE. How can we show our kids can be anything they want to when all they see is Soulja Boy, Ray J, Pacman, Vick, No Cents, Bow Wow and Flavor Flava. We don’t show them Hill Harper, Romeo, Nick Cannon and others that are making money without clowning.

thank you. it’s hard but it’s a day by day process. i am completely healed with just a few minor aches and pains and some mental issues like don’t like to sit in a park car long, don’t like the sound of fireworks, gunshots or anything of that nature. i agree with you 1000%, UNITY is what we need and we also need to reach out to the youth and try to help them out. I’m not old, but it don’t take a genius to figure out that it really does take a village to raise a child.
For the last hour or so a NYPD van with a loud a$$ bullhorn on top has been going up and down the street in front of my apt (Lenox Ave.) making an announcement…that the police are looking for related info, you can remain anonymous and you will get 2Gs in cash for information.
In these lean economic times I’m guessing they will probably get some takers.

The only difference between a black criminal and a white criminal is skin color. That is my point. You said that you prayed for the shooters. Maybe I read it wrong, but it seemed like you were feeling as sorry for them as for the victims. At one time, the leading cause of death for young black males was murder (it might still be). That is insane. There is more of an uproar in the black community when cops beat somebody up than there is about the thousands of black people killed by black criminals. I am not saying that police abuse is not a problem, but criminals are tearing apart black communities, not cops. There is very little sympathy among White people for murderers, no matter what color they are. Most White people want to see them fry. I think that if more Black people had that attitude instead of trying to empathize with the criminals, then there would be less crime.
Shootingstars’s comment got posted as I was writing mine. That is what I am talking about. People should be coming forth with information because they want to rid the streets of these killers, not because they can make $2,000. Why would you want to protect people who are killing you?

5 people were shot in Chicago as well in a short period of time. Two were killed including a 15-year-old girl…..sad, sad, sad…but this is everyday. As much as everyone supports Barack Obama, I have heard him say nothing about the uptick in violence on his own senatorial turf. it appears the problems of the inner city are not on any candidates radar…too worried about the votes of those “hard working whites” i guess. someone needs to make this an issue and fast.
Sadly, this happens all over America everyday. Where in the hell are the parents who brought them in the world? Parents have a responsibility to raise & teach these kids as soon as they come out of the wound. This is ridiculous. What are these kids even doing with guns? They need to pick up a book something that can change their lives for the better & put these guns down & stop this deadly foolishness. Black people are the enemy of themselves & I am speaking from the heart because I am black. We need to wake up people as if Hurricane Katrina wasn’t enough to wake everybody that was asleep up. We need God, Prayer & common sense. Stop hating, hurting & killing each other. WE need to raise & teach our children ALL of our children. Where did this self hate and self destruction come from? It starts at the root with the parents. A lot of young women are having children out of wedlock when they should be getting their education. Run behind a book not a boy because boys aren’t going anywhere. Have some love & respect for yourself. If you love your babies, leave them in Heaven until you get your education & get your life together. Stop depending on welfare & the Government. It’s hard out here, but it’s hard for a lot of people, but you have to be aggressive in a good way & work hard it will pay off in the end. The decisions you make in life now will effect you until the end of your life. Our children deserve better & it’s in our hands to give them better. The First 48 A & E series is a prime example of why we as black people need to stop the madness & get our lives, our children & our act together.
