An erotic blogger whose double life as a prostitute became a hit TV series has ended years of fevered speculation by revealing her most intimate secret — her true identity. Brooke Magnanti, a cancer specialist at a university in western England, unmasked herself in a British newspaper as the woman behind “Belle de Jour,” the salacious online diary of a high class call girl.

“It feels so much better on this side. Not to have to tell lies, hide things from the people I care about,” the 34-year-old wrote on her blog after the Sunday Times published its interview with her.Magnanti’s frank and sometimes funny accounts of working as a call girl earned her a huge following, a lucrative book deal and legions of critics who variously accused her of glamorizing the sex industry, making it up — and of being a man. The 34-year-old said she became a call girl in 2003 to support herself in London while completing her doctoral thesis after realizing she had no qualms about being paid for sex. She contacted an agency, working as a prostitute until late 2004, describing it as “so much more enjoyable” than an earlier job as a computer programmer. Barry Taylor, director of communication and marketing at the University of Bristol said the revelations would not affect her employment.

“This aspect of Dr Magnanti’s past is not relevant to her current role at the university,” he said. While Magnanti’s admission, and indeed her years of blogging, contained many eyebrow-raising insights, according to her final blog entry most people were more interested in distinctly unsexy details.

“Also, so much curiosity about my tax situation! Yes, I did pay taxes on sex work earnings,” she wrote.

AND she gets to keep her job????

Why is this random ridiculousness? Bossip get off your high horse. I doubt any of you have attended university or have achieved a phD to realise the kind of expenses that are incurred to invest in one’s education.

She didn’t mind being paid for using her OWN body as she sees fit. Who is good enough to cast judgement on her? I am sure her past exploits have not affected her work in any way which is why they have decided to back her.

I’ve been to England, and Yes, Prostitution is legal there…AS long as you are a female working in a brothel and not the street, whatever you and your prostitute agree on is between the 2 of you….The Philippines

The Philippines is a good example, Technically prostitution is illegal but when it had U.S. military bases there was such a huge demand by U.S. military men for sex, it flourished. But to be politically correct, bargirls were “Customer Relations officers”. They are required to have weekly STD checkups and quarterly HIV tests! But officially there are no barfines or sexworkers, just Guest Relationship Officers who are bargirls that have to carry government issued ID badges. Sexwork is an very big industry and supports many people especially in smaller cities like Los Angeles. Unless it involves children, there is no enforcement and no legal risk for the bargirls or their customers. It’s just like secondary wives in much of Asia. It is simply accepted but often not publicly acknowledged.

And for $20-$30 barfine and maybe a $10 tip you have a very attractive happy bargirl who enthusiastically goes to your hotel for the night and is very happy with the arrangement.(And a lot of the time, you can talk them down!!) But that $40 cost in PI is equivalent to perhaps $4000 in purchasing value in the U.S. since food, housing and all living costs are so much higher. Prostitution is legal in a lot of places in Europe…They just don’t want you handling your business on the street, but if you dip into a bathroom, *****ody cares….You’d be amazed at what you could get a girl to do for about 200 czech crowns…..And Ukrainian women??? To get masters or a PhD. can easily land one in $200,000 in debt by student loans only. It’s a sahme that getting an education costs more than a mortgage on a 6 bedroom house, but that’s how it is. Now to pay off those loans on top of paying for your monthly bills and rent (even if u live frugally) takes years (depending on the degree, it can take anywhere from 2-19).

I am not condoning what she did. It’s not right, but many young women (mainly white) are prostituting as high-cl***** “escorts” to pay off these bills. Yeah, this lady may retain her job at the college but I guarantee that her coworkers will look and treat her differently.

If she were black, she would have been fired or ostracized to such a degree, she might as well as live as a hermit. That’s if the sister was in a high rank position or had an advanced degree. If she were a typical video vixen (like Superhead) then she would have been left alone, making her $$$.

Doesnt mean that there aren’t young black female high-cl***** “escorts” using their sex money to pay for their higher education. There are plenty. But unlike this white woman, they will never publicize it, the social ramifications are too high.

Sad, but this is the way the world works (in some cases).

Prostitution is NOT ..I repeat..NOT legal in the UK. Certain people are pushing for it to be made legal in order to make taxes fromt he profession but they also claim it is to make women more safe eg. legalizing brothels so that women have a regulated place to work.
In an ideal world…we would also like prostitution to go away but it never will..so its best we face up to to the fact that it is here to stay.

I defend this lady because I believe everyone has a choice to do with their body what they see fit.

Anything they do is between themselves and god and no one else, therefore we shouldnt judge people because I am sure most of us has some really scary skeletons in the closet.
