She did try….If she has truly given up the cocaine, etc..I’m happy for. But her tool (voice) clearly needs to be shaped up after years of not being used. I enjoy her because I’m a fan, but still work to be done. This may also involve giving up other vices (i.e. cigarettes, alcohol, etc). I miss the old Whitney!

I think america is Deaf. why hasn’t someone pulled Whitney to the side and said…”look we are glad ur off drugs, we love you, your an american gem”. HOWEVER. Please get vocal training and stop making performances when your voice is not ready.

Listening to I Want To Dance With Someone was a trainwreck. She sounded ho*****, strained and weak. I felt bad for old girl. I can still here that beautiful tone (like in Greatest Love, Didn’t we almost have it all, For the Love of you, just the lonely talking again).

It’s still there, she just needs to work on it

Honestly, I agree with ty2phine. It’s like her flailing voice is the big white elephant in the room that no one wants to acknowledge. She’s not the same, period. I haven’t purchased her new album because I will forever remember how she used to sound and it will be nothing but a reminder of how she doesn’t sound like that anymore. *sigh*

Praise God that she looks truly drug free, she has a healthy weight on her and she truly seems happy. I’ll take it.
After hearing her at the AMAS and in Europe last month, she still has it in her. She just needs now to work with a vocal coach to expand that range and get some cardio work for breath support.

She is a work in progress and I believe that the more she sings the better her voice will continue to improve. I for one b elieve that Whitney may have been near death and to come back from that is a miracle.

I’m not going to slag her but encourage her on her path to healing and the voice will get better.

She was AMazing at the AMAs, had me in tears.

Wow! I was happy for her after her performance of Million Dollar Bill, but she was sweating for it! After I Want to Dance With Somebody, you know she still has work to do. I hope her instrument hasn’t been permanently damaged. She was struggling by the middle of the song. Her backup singers were carrying her.

Clive, get her some help. Don’t put her out there to fail. I’m glad Dionne was there to support her. She’s going to need it.

It seems that most of us (with decent hearing) can acknowledge the fact that Whitney’s voice is not good. The performance at the AMA’s was better than her GMA and X Factor performances, however she is no where near where she was prior to her drug use.

She speaks her lyrics, shortens the phases within the verses and appears to rely on the background singers much more. It appears she has not only damaged her vocal chords but perhaps she damaged her lungs as well because she does not appear to be able to sustain her notes.

I hate that she allowed this to happen to her gift and hope that she will continue to do well.

Poor Whitney. This just goes to show what happens when you don’t honor the gifts that you are given. From what I understand, she is still smoking heavily and drinking. When your voice is your instrument, you cannot take it for granted! I know because I sing, and I have to be extra careful about my throat. Cigs are the worst thing that she can be doing right now. It’s a shame that they had to lower the key so much from the original songs, just to accommodate her live performance. Her vibrato is gone, and she can’t even modulate without her voice cracking, or losing her breath.

This woman is so talented and gifted. I hope she gets it all back, but it’s not going to happen if she doesn’t start taking care of her voice. It may already be too late.

I have every album she’s ever made and yes her voice is sooo cracked up from smoking cigarettes and cocaine, it was a BIG mistake as cocaine ruins the vocal chords, I don’t think she’ll ever get THAT voice back again combination of age and drugs but it’s a cautionary tale, if you abuse what God gives you it could be taken away….just sayin…

All I can say is I give her credit for trying. But if Whitney wants to retain her former glory its going to take a lot more work than just wanting to come back cause you can.

People expect a certian amount of vocal quality from a Legend like Whitney. I think Whitney dosent realize she choosing to sing some of her most vocally challenging songs. And with her voice not being all the way back. It sounds harsh.

All you haters need to fall back. Whitney can out sing any of ya’ll on her worst day. I think she did great on both songs taken into consideration what she’s been through and her age. Any one in any genre of professionalism age and looses their peak. Whitney is no exception. I know her voice was so extrodinary at one time but she is human and is affected by what age does to us all. Stop the crab mentality and give our sista some respect!!!

Whitney’s voice is forever gone. There is no amont of vocal training she can get that will help her. I’m glad she is off drugs but it doesn’t change the fact that she sounded awful. My husband begged me to change the channel after 1 min. He asked how can you listen to that without feeling pitty.

Everytime they say Whitney’s name I cringe. She has the same ole runs, breathing hard, the voice is just gone. But hey, at least she’s not talking her way through the songs as she did when she first began. Talking and holding the mic out to the audience to sing equaled I can’t sing anymore. She’s getting stronger it seems, however, she’s still arrogant. I thought she was arrogant during the Oprah interview. What’s up with the way she speaks? her and Tina Turner? Ones from TN and the other from NJ, what’s with the uppity way of speaking? almost have an accent. We need someone new, fresh, who can sing, and has talent. Tired of Bey, tired of Rhi, tired of Whit, tired of Janet…….Bring on the new pleeeeeeeze! Ladies, go take your money an sit down somewhere!

I hope that with continued vocal training she can recover her former singing voice. She TRULY WAS one of the BEST pop singers EVER. (IMO, only Mariah Carey comes CLOSE in the singing skills area.) I will ALWAYS love Whitney. But, the drugs etc. really did “a number” on her beautiful instrument.

I could not watch her entire performance at the AMAs, I just couldn’t. This is not pretty, how the hell is she going to tour?

@cwill, age has NOTHING to do with Whitney’s vocal poweress, but excessive smoking of both cigarettes and cocaine does have EVERYTHING to do with the degradation of her voice.

Chaka, Gladys, Barbra, Patti, Jennifer (Holiday) are ALL older and they still have their pipes. Just saw Jennifer live two weeks ago and she SHUT IT DOWN!

People need to stop deluding themselves, Whitney does not sound good. There is no need to compare her to any other singer, she has the stand against the monster she created, the young Whitney.

I think Whit may be tired of performing. She doesn’t seem to be willing to put in the work to really come back. Like her aunt Dionne, those cigarettes have ruined her voice. Maybe if she were to quit she’d have a chance. For now she is out of breath and barely able to hold it together.

I have all of her works and 1 can clearly hear the transitions thruout her career. Don’t get me wrong, I luv me some aretha; but Patti, Stephanie Mills, Tina, and Babara; so far, appear to have been vocally consistent throughout their careers.

People keep talking about voice lessons, and whatnot. The sad thing is, vocal chords are super sensitive, and once you lose the ability to sing, it can never be fully restored. Once the chords are damaged, no training would help.

Whitney must know that. She almost damaged her chords when she was a little girl-so she must be doing this to prove to herself she can. She knows what she sounds like,but I guess doing this is better than feeling depressed that she can’t perform and fall off the wagon.

Do you know how heartbreaking it must be to be named Whitney Houston, and hear yourself, and not be able to perform to the standards of your past? It must be devasting to know that no matter how hard you try, you’ll never be able to get back what made you who you are.

And to know that it was self inflicted must be so hard to deal with. But at least she looked beautiful on stage. You can see the change. But it still feels sad to know she can’t bring it like she used to.

I’m sure that Whitney is well aware that her voice is not what it used to be. Hopefully, she is focusing on her sobriety first and foremost and has a positive support group surrounding her. With the help of vocal coaching and practice I think that she will regain strength in her voice. Let’s all wish her the very best.

It is a sad day when people are talking during a Whitney Concert. She really needs to stop singing and I will always love you. She cannot sing anymore. I agree Rhianna, Britney and the rest of them can’t sing either but its tolerable. Hearing Whitney sing is just SAD! PLEASE SOME BODY TELL HER TO SIT IT ON DOWN. She is embarr*****ing herself I wonder does she ever look at her old performances. Folks stop its a wrap for her.
