Rep. James Clyburn, the No. 3 Democrat in the House of Representatives and a superdelegate, had been neutral in the race between front-runner Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton.

“I came to that decision because I do believe that he has elevated this campaign,” Clyburn said of Obama. “He has energized our constituents. He is redrawing an electoral map for Democrats.”

For the naysayers who believe people on this site are voting for Obama because of his skin color, then why didn’t Shirley Chisholm, Jesse Jackson, or Al Sharpton win the nomination when they ran? People of several races are supporting Obama. Jesse Jackson had a great deal of Black support when he first ran, but that didn’t get him the nomination.

I believe in the Democratic party, not just Barack Obama. I will gladly support any Democratic nominee, but prefer to see Barack Obama as said nominee. Remember, when you vote for a Democrat, you’re voting the party into office, not just that one person. We are at the point of confirming who we believe will be the best representative for our country.

The Bush family has ruined our chances at having any other political legacies in national politics in this century. Yes, it would have been nice to see Hillary become the first female president, but no one wants to see a rehash of the past. I was in high school at the end of Pres. Clinton’s 2nd term, so I wasn’t paying much attention to the national political scene. Things may have been great for America, but at what cost? He did accelerate the shipping of jobs overseas, via NAFTA and changes in our trade policies with Asian countries. That came back on us in the worst way, and his wife wants to come out and claim she wants to bring jobs back into the US, the same jobs she took trips for, paid by these companies, to convince Americans sending work overseas was the right thing to do.

NAFTA, in my opinion, setup Mexican immigrants for false expectations of having high paying jobs in their country. What they ended up with was thankless, cheap labor at factories that pollute the territories surrounding them. Hungry for a better life, and armed with the training they received from these American built factories, they sneak into this country hoping to be hired with these skills. No one thanks them for helping keep our prices low, the same rich Democrats that applauded NAFTA are the same ones who are on the Republican side to send them home. So while she courts the Latinos, she fails to mention that her “white house experience” comes with courting NAFTA proponents, leading to pollution and destruction along the Mexican border. This has allowed the Republicans to build a “cage” to keep America “safe” from illegal aliens, but I believe it’s really just a play to keep the Mexicans in the low paying jobs the corporate execs wanted to ship south of the border.

I don’t believe it’s fair for her to use her time as first lady as part of her “experience” for the white house. As a resident of Texas, I was aware of changes being made at the state level when Bush was governor because I was a public school student, volunteered for government relief agencies, and worked closely with afterschool programs for young children. Texas went through a lot of financial devastation when Bush was governor, and many Texans, regardless of party, were not big on his becoming President. The Republicans have always been unified, and rallied around him once they say his father’s crony (Dick Cheney) was going to be his right hand man.

I believe she is a truly brilliant woman who got in over her head, and thought she could “bully” her way into the Whitehouse when she saw things weren’t going her way. I watched Hillary’s CHIP program not deliver everything it promised, and I watched Bush destroy what was good about it. Several states lost federal funding on medical programs, and CHIP was one of several programs to be removed form the list of benefactors. This was allowed to happen in several states, so I don’t believe Hillary should be waving that as one of her victories and an example for her healthcare plan.

Now, I’m no political expert, but that is the opinion of a black female Democrat who is truly for party unity, but we need to unite under the right candidate. The days of Camelot are far behind us, and very few people, regardless of party, believe the Clintons are the next Kennedys, just as GW Bush’s two terms confirmed that the Bush family members are not the “Kennedys of the South.” People want to see someone new, who hasn’t been tarnished by Washington, and that’s why we are flocking to Barack Obama. No candidate is perfect, but he’s not a Clinton, he’s not a Bush, he is who he is. He will make mistakes, he will be criticized, but he is in demand. And like it or not, no one can make things worse than the president we have in office right now. I believe Barack will be the next Democratic nominee, and will make a fine president of the United States.

Priest who mocked Clinton told to take a leave

Cardinal Francis George asked a Chicago priest on Tuesday to temporarily step down from his post to “reflect on his recent statements” regarding Sen. Hillary Clinton and her bid for the White House.

Last week, the Rev. Michael Pfleger mocked Clinton at Sen. Barack Obama’s former church, saying the New York senator felt “entitled” to the Democratic nomination for president.

In a guest sermon at Trinity United Church of Christ, Pfleger pretended he was Clinton crying over “a black man stealing my show.”

Pfleger’s sermon, along with past controversial statements by Trinity’s former longtime pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, led Obama to resign his membership at Trinity. Pfleger apologized for his comments Sunday.

George asked Pfleger to take leave from pastoral duties at St. Sabina Church in order to “reflect on his recent statements and actions in the light of the church’s regulations for all Catholic priests,” according to a statement Tuesday from the Archdiocese of Chicago.

The leave was effective Tuesday and was scheduled to last “a couple of weeks,” the statement said.

Pfleger, who has promised George he would no longer mention any presidential candidates by name, did not believe “this to be the right step at this time,” according to the statement.

“While respecting his disagreement, I have nevertheless asked him to use this opportunity to reflect,” George said in the statement. “I hope that this period will also be a time away from the public spotlight and for rest and attention to family concerns.”

Messages seeking comment were left Tuesday for Pfleger and the Archdiocese of Chicago.

Pfleger, a 59-year-old white priest at a largely black parish, has gained a reputation for impassioned sermons and activism. The Archdiocese said his temporary replacement is the Rev. William Vanecko, pastor of Chicago’s St. Kilian Catholic Church.

I walk away and you see the posts climax in glee of his triumphant milestone with some predicting some speech of defeat on the part of his opponent– only to later see the posts seeth back into contempt. God, I love how most of America has been sucked into this whole race. They can’t see past themselves. Let alone the candidate of their choice and their emotions. It’s like watching a telenovella. I know that she won’t be the nominee. I think more likely than not she knows and Obama knows that she won’t be VP. Yet it is in the interest of both to seriously consider it. Or show that they serioulsly consider it. That doesn’t mean that she will be VP, it just means that both are serious about making sure that all options are seriously presented and heard, doted and crossed. That in the eyes of their supporters both candidates courted each other in the typical manner. Yeah it would be kinda cookie cutter “fitting” in the old way of politics for politicians to walk on egg shells for fear of hurting the party. To say and do what is expected. To eagerly reject the yet to be— the unexpected. I’m kinda glad that in such a historic election democracy is at work–not allegiance to the wants and needs of some political institution(DNC)–their chances to win in 08. I don’t know how some people can champion the audacity in one person as hope against odds only to contempt the audacity in another to do the same. We had a man and woman who didn’t sit down just because they were unknown on the national scene(Obama), or when it was expected for them to do so (Hillary) for fear of bing labled egotistical. They’re playing the political game as it should be played, and in the end neither one can say that they were handed their nomination– or didn’t fight hard for it. Both will be able to say they were better for it. What they represent will be better for it. I don’t need to have her concede before she does. I don’t need to have any personality or punidt who makes six figures make a call for me before the consession speech is read. Becuse that’s what it’s all about to the media—”you heard it here first.” I don’t mind sitting and seeing this whole election play itself out— even if I know the ending. Obama will be the nominee. Hillary will not be VP. But—she will be an improtant and supportive ally. The facts are that the Dems chances are so good in 08 that even party infighting couldn’t stop the little engine that could. I’m glad both candiates took the time and the opprotunity such an election afforded to really run a race tooth and nail to give it all the room it required. I’m glad for what is says to blacks and females alike. I’m glad that no matter the nominee– the truth is that Obama and Hillary ARE genuine when they praise one another. And that’s the change America has been hoping for. The ability of two candidates to be able to put in their all into their run, and still know that it’s not personal.

As I read the comments on this site I am sad and happy at the same time. I’m happy at thought of my people feeling so uplifted. However, I am saddened by the ignorance that is displayed. How can we claim to be better than others and say someone needs to kill McCain?

I am also deeply disturbed by how quickly Maxine Waters, Maya Angelou, etc.. can be called sellouts. People that have spent their lives empowering black people. If you truly aren’t voting for Obama just because he is black why do you consider such people sellouts? The Clintons have done a lot for black people and have deep-seated relationships with many of the people you have demonized. I guess you haven’t taken any of that into account, but you claim your not voting based on race. Isn’t it possible that many of them believe Hillary is the best candidate based on her history, experience, and the fact that many of them have worked closely with her?

I think it’s disgusting that members of the Congressional Black Caucus received death threats for not automatically throwing their support behind Obama. I was truly disappointed that Obama didn’t even bother to speak out against that. It showed me a lot about just how political he really is.

I have suspected all along that the Media was being soft on Obama at the beginning to knock Hillary out. Then they were going to start playing hardball with Obama and it would be too late (i.e. the general election). The whole Rev. Wright fiasco is a perfect example. The media knew about him long before it blew up.

I would like to say more, but I won’t. I think the most important thing now is that we realize what is at stake in this next election. We need Obama to win. Not because McCain is so evil or white, but because he doesn’t have the same passion or priorities for this country. I think it is naive to think Obama doesn’t need Hillary to be on the ticket. If the Dem’s ran a winner takes all primary like the republicans do, Hillary would have won the nomination. Obama needs to put somebody on the ticket that is going to boost his chances. Not somebody who didn’t even carry one state and lost in a previous election (John Edwards). That would be mediocre. Whether you like McCain or not there is no denying that he has way more experience then Obama. Americans have seen what putting a person with little experience has done to our country (i.e. George Bush). Therefore, it’s not going to be a cakewalk for Obama to win. This is the Dem’s election to lose, but it can be lost if we don’t stay focused. We have to put all this negativity aside for the greater cause.

@Hopeful, we are all entitled to our opinions, so I’m only going to respond to the issue of Hillary being on the ticket with Obama. In her speech, she showed a lack of togetherness as it relates to the Democratic party. Instead of conceding to an obvious loss, she didn’t even have the guts to, not only concede, but didn’t congratulate Obama on this “great moment in history” as you put it. She has been a horrible sportsman er, woman. In my opinion, she has played dirty, and is only looking out for herself. Her speech tonight proved that point. Obama has done nothing but be gracious and even giving her props for being a formidable candidate and even going so far as to say she helped him become a better candidate. Now that’s class, humility, and dignity all put together. The only thing people can throw at him is the Rev. Wright issue (which to me, wasn’t an issue at all). Oh, and let me not forget how she wanted to change the rules (FL/MI) when she thought she was going to win, but changed her tune when she was clearly losing. She’s unstable, and again, cannot be trusted.

I said all that to say that in my opinion I’m hoping by November, Hillary supporters will come to their senses and forget the nonsense and let’s begin to heal the Democratic party.

Yes we are all entitled to our opinions and that goes for people like Maxine Waters as well. I disagree with the notion that Hillary was the bad guy in this whole process. I think many of you, as did Hillary truly underestimate just how much of a politician Obama really is. If Obama was so innocent in this whole thing why didn’t he stand up for the CBC? Obama knows the Clintons aren’t racist, but he didn’t hesitate to capitalize off of the Jesse Jackson mess. When even Jackson himself said he didn’t think Bill’s comments were racist. While I don’t agree with many of McCain’s views I would never call him unpatriotic after everything he has been through.

The Rev. Wright issue became so big because Obama didn’t deal with it from the very beginning. He knew this was going to be an issue. Obama harped on Hillary’s Iraq vote so much that he backed himself into a corner. By continuously questioning Hillary’s judgment, it opened the door for people to wonder about his. For instance him being a member of Trinity for 20 yrs. and the Rescoe stuff.

Hillary didn’t concede because she has a legitimate argument. If the tables were turned Obama would have one also. There is no way we can seriously go into the general election ignoring the fact that Obama lost a lot of states that the Dems need in November. Not to mention that a lot of states he won were caucuses and aren’t going to vote Dem in Nov. We all know the affects of peer pressure. As for FL and MI, I blame the DNC for this mess. I don’t agree with the repubs on much of anything, but their nomination process is much better than the Dems. If anything this whole process has exposed how the Dems need to revamp their whole nomination process. I think Obama has to at least offer the VP to Clinton. Just like I think if she won she would have to at least offer it to him. It doesn’t make sense for Obama to be anti-establishment, but then put an establishment person like Chris Dodd on the ticket. Chris Dodd didn’t even carry one state. It’s bad enough that he’s perceived to be the most liberal senator. On top of that he has surrounded himself with a lot of liberal establishment people.

I think there vote is vital to the democrats sucess in November. I have my theory’s as to why they wont rally behind Obama. Why they dont understand why african americans are so proud of Obama. I just hope it isnt what I think it is?

From now through November, as an Obama volunteer, I will be working my butt off to encourage young Obama supporters, especially black youth and youth of color, to register Republican AND vote Obama in November.

@ lovely and amazing the government doesn’t release the races of registered voters to the press. The only way to know voting demographics of any sort is through exit polling. To that end you would be better off checking Registered republican in exit polling if you are polled. Obama can get to 270 without Ohio or Florida and I would remind you that he is up in Ohio even without the bounce and fighting off two candidates. Obama picks up Iowa easily and will take Colorado after the convention then take New Mexico in light of McCain’s run to the right during the primary where he will be tied to Bush. Virginia is also in play.

To the person who responded to my post saying that NAFTA is what gave us Walmart and Michelle Obama was on a board for one if its suppliers or something, yes, what you said is true, and I won’t deny that. Hillary Clinton served on Walmart’s board. Our current vice president has had a heavy hand in turning Halliburton into the billion dollar corp it is today. A lot of people with political connections serve on the boards of these companies and are handsomely rewarded for it. Is it right? I’ll never say, because if I were given the opportunity to serve on the board of a major corporation, I’d do it without giving it a second thought.

And I’m not being sexist by saying Hillary Clinton’s time as first lady shouldn’t be considered in her experience. George W. Bush being the son of a president didn’t give him the experience to become president. He became governor on his father’s name, just as Hillary was hoping to use her husband’s name to accelerate her into the oval office. Had Hillary Rodham never married Bill Clinton, or had Bill Clinton never become the governor of Arkansas, would she be serving in the NY Senate today? Would she even be considered the first female to have a chance at becoming President, absolutely not! Timing has a heavy hand in politics. As I stated in my post from yesterday, I believe she is a brilliant woman. She just underestimated her opponent and overestimated her following.

As for saying Obama’s time as a community organizer shouldn’t count as experience, then all 3 people fighting to become president should be in trouble. John McCain has been an advocate of veterans’ rights long before he joined the Senate, and used that as one of his selling points during his Senate races, and as a part of his presidential race. Hillary Clinton worked on the Mondale campaign and openly talks about her switching from Republican to Democrat when she began to work out in the community as a part of her experience.

Your life experiences do count as EXPERIENCE (in my opinion) when you’re running for political office. Again, no HUMAN running for office in this country will be perfect. Should you choose to exercise your right to vote, you are basically voting for the lesser evil. We’re voting on a party’s platform, not just for that person.

This isn’t just a victory for African Americans, I KNOW this is a victory for all Americans. My white stepfather is a die hard Republican, and he’s kind of on the fence about Obama because he’s not too keen on McCain. My biracial step-brother is excited to see someone like him, and has white kids making fun of him calling him Obama Osama, but he’s just “brushing his shoulders off” and going on with it. My mother raised me to be a very staunch independent and vote for who I felt was right regardless of party, race, and wealth. I also come from a large military family who tends to vote Republican, and can tell you that there is a major shift amongst veterans in this election.

On many social issues I tend to be conservative: I’m all for welfare reform (and no, I do not see the healthcare plans as being welfare, I’ve lived in Europe and seen this work in 2 other countries, it’s a beautiful thing that America should try). I’m all for the right to bear arms (I’m from Texas, so y’all know that was coming!). I truly believe that no child should be left behind, and the federal government should work to help achieve that goal. We may not be doing it in the best way, but it can be done.

But on other issues, I’m considered as being liberal: I believe that gays should have the right to marry because what we’re recognizing are legal unions, pulling religion into the farce that we call marriage will not stop Christians, Muslims, and anyone else who only believes in heterosexual marriage. Steve and Barry can get married and start a family, that doesn’t take away from my heterosexual rights because I will have a spiritual union. I’m all for the right to choose, because until I’m faced with the option of whether or not I want to have a child, I can’t make an opinion on that.

I believe this election will be a wakeup call to many. We have a two party system because there has to be a yin to the yang. American politics will never be perfect. I wish Democrats would wake up and get behind our party. Everyone get involved. If you’re mad Hillary didn’t win and don’t think you can vote for Obama, then go research McCain or whoever will run under the green party. If you were for Obama and are scared he won’t have a chance, then also research your other options. If you’re undecided, then again, RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH. For all of the people calling out the faults of each candidate, let’s start to back it up with facts.

Your point is right about experience….but I neither voted nor supported Bush in either term. Obama claims all this community experience but I’ve got community experience as most Americans do. Volunteering at a homeless shelter is community experience. All I was saying was, if he’s who you support all the best to you. I sincerely wish Obama the best. But I will not support him because he doesn’t speak to my needs. I have that right just as you have voting rights.

Hillary supporters: The more I listen to many of them, the more I thank God Obama is running because, like her, many are unreasonable. And trust me when I say (as a political science major undergrad) that he has paid his dues, beyond “community service” to have been elected Senator of Illinois.

I’ll agree w/ you that as a politician, I take it w/ a grain of salt any and all promises that they make w/ regards to my specific/personal needs. Moi- I apologize for the delay in my rebuttal.

I wasn’t knocking you on the board of corporations thing. Yes, these corporations have gotten big kick backs because of NAFTA, so everyone involved in this Presidential Race (the Obamas, Clintons, and McCains-ESPECIALLY the McCains) have gained from it. I do agree Hillary has had a great career. I just don’t think she should be waving her 8 years as First Lady as valid White House Experience. When she does, it keeps coming back to bite her in the a-s-s. She lied about NAFTA, she’s tried to say Obama has ties to shady characters, then they drudge up her husband’s record and who he was associated with and pardoned while in office.

Yes, there has been some sexism involved, but I don’t believe that denying her the right to claim her “First Lady experience” falls into that category. She can’t claim that “experience” and cry wolf when someone calls her on it. At this point, my problem with Hillary Clinton is she just needs to accept that she lost. She knew the electoral system, and her backers and campaign chose not to follow it and they lost. They ran out of money, they ran out of options, they ran out of steam, and soon she will be ran out of the race. I’m not attributing all of her accomplishments to her husband, but there have been more accomplished women in Congress on both sides of the party, and I doubt that would have had as much success as Hillary has had in their first attempt for the Whitehouse. I said she was using the Clinton name to ACCELERATE her quest for the Oval Office.

I do understand that she doesn’t just eat cake and take bubble baths and that a first lady has to get involved in causes (for the record: I actually prefer to picture her at the Ritz Carlton sipping overpriced tea and eating little sandwiches with no crust). CHIP that is one of her causes that failed. Not everything she has done has failed, but her biggest baby didn’t make it. When people criticized Obama about not supporting the gas tax he came out and said, Hey, when I was part of the IL state legislature we tried it, it didn’t work, I learned from it, here’s what we can do about gas prices, and it worked for him. Hillary has not come out to say anything about what she’s learned from the drastic changes CHIP has seen and how she can use that to shape her healthcare plan. She makes sure to leave the bad things out of her “Whitehouse experience”, and only discusses the positives.

I think the MSM tried to play down EVERYONE’s achievements and just focus on the mess that was this primary season (with the exception of FAUX News and how they praise McCain now that he’s the Repub presumptive nominee). Stating facts and being accurate does not get you viewers. When McCain was running against Romney and Huckabee, everyone scratched and clawed at him for being too liberal, look at the bills he’s passed, yada yada yada. All three candidates have causes and have made major moves during their time. As much as I am overjoyed by Obama being the nominee, I want people to learn about him so they will appreciate the candidate I have been volunteering for, why people chose him over HRC, and support the party I contribute to.

So, on some of your facts, I can’t knock you. We just have a different take on each point, so I’ll say I’m agreeing to disagree with you.

Here’s the deal……..Clinton doesn’t really want VP. What most people don’t know is that being VP is essentially a powerless position. By law, the VP has NO executive power. The ONLY instance in which a VP has ANY executive power, is if something happens to the President. That’s it. Clinton really wants a Supreme Court appointment. She’ll have a much greater impact on this country as a Supreme Court justice.

Obama will make a “symbolic gesture” and offer her the VP slot, only if she agrees in advance not to take it. Sounds crazy, but this is how politics work. This will give the “appearance” of unity within the party, therefore, making it harder for McCain to secure the position. It’s a PR move and uninformed Americans will be non-the-wiser.

IMHO….Obama’s best bet is John Edwards, bitter Hillary supporters notwithstanding. I campaigned for Kerry/Edwards and I LOVE what he stands for! Obama/Edwards……THAT’S my dream ticket!!!

Sleezy, I agree with you. I don’t think she’ll take the spot, but it will be “offered” to her so he can get her supporters, and then she’ll back away from it.

If you think every bit of experience is valid when running for this office — as no one really has any real White House experience before running for POTUS unless they’re running for a second term—, then there should be no problem in throwing every bit of experience out there as experience for the White House. The problem is that this idea is wayyy ahead of its time, and it will be a long time before people are able to realize that by allowing others to deny the validity of this position –First Lady– (based on old political notions like you have to have run something on the executive level to count for POTUS)…they ultimately uphold the status quo. Her fault is that not only is she the first modern first lady in the last decade– representing a time when women began to be taken seriously on issues without needing to hide behind aprons– but to then use that position as First Lady as experience one could use to throw out there for ultimate US office. It only works is they were really active, not just superficially, while being First Lady.

She can claim the experience and then cry wolf on it. That’s not her fault, but the beauty of the position. You can get credit of all the good your husband did, but you can’t take the credit for the bad–because ultimately the decision making is not yours to make. Same goes for Obama and Iraq. He can get the credit of all the good that will come out of Iraq(removal of Saddam), but he can’t take the credit for the bad(everything else)–because ultimately the decision making was not his to make.

As to health care. She did reflect on her failure. Referencing the insurmountable task to do something unheard of on such a scale in the US, the mistakes, and the importance of bipartisanship. Separate from universal health care, SCHIP was adopted. I believe it still exists but the measure to expand the program was last vetoed by Bush in 07-ish I think.

The government does not keep a record of who you voted for. It is illegal. Also the voting righs act prevents election commissions from even mentioning race at the polls.

The only way to tie race/age with a voter is by exit polling. Also, the Bradley effect may be happening in reverse. I read an article by conservative pundit Michelle Bradley where she was saying that many blacks who vote Republican may not want to say so in exit polling, and in the primary blacks who backed Clinton may have felt embarassed and said they voted Obama.

There are no permanent friends or enemies in politics just permanent interest. All in all I do believe we need to stop being democratic party sheep, but you can’t say the republican party is acceptable we can through the issues one by one but the Republican party has repeatedly tried to strip black communities and schools of funding. They’ve also attacked reproduction rights, and deterred upward mobility and class fluidity. They are the party of old white racist. As for your comments about Dr. King. He was a democrat-just not a dixie crat- he worked closely with Kennedy and Johnson and there was speculation of a Senate run. Harriet Tubman was apolitical. Abraham Lincoln was a republican before the modern democratic party was invented.

@ Necy I’m not sure how you can be prepared to say bush is not a racist unequivocally. If we re-visit Florida or review the EEOC and Civil Rights commissions monitoring of his executions in Texas we won’t see any conclusive evidence to this position. He has lowered the rights of African Americans when politically expendient just as the Clintons have fanned racial flames with politically prudent.

But, if Mr. Obama is reading this, I want to say to him: You do not need the Clintons to win the presidency–you defeated them! You are far too classy and astute to ask for anything that they can do for you, sir. You have already brought out millions of new young Democratic voters to the process, and you made people changed their minds and prejudices. You embraced all the dirt politics of the Clintons with utmost class and respect. You didn’t accept handouts from lobbyists and big rich companies to push your plans, but you depended on the people. Then, you said it is not about you, it’s about us, and it was our moment. Sir, you are deserving of this presidency all on your own accord and merit, and I am excited about campaigning the next 5 months to send out your message of change and hope for us in 2009.
