South African Actors Aren’t Feelin JHud Playing Winnie Mandela in Upcoming Film

We agree with South African actors on this one:

South African actors want to stop Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson from playing Winnie Madikizela-Mandela in a new film on the ex-wife of the nation’s first black president, reports said Monday.

The Creative Workers Union of South Africa said using foreign actors to tell the country’s stories undermined efforts to develop the national film industry.

“It can’t happen that we want to develop our own Hollywood and yet bring in imports,” the union’s president Mabutho Sithole said in The Citizen newspaper.

“This decision must be reversed, it must be stopped now,” union secretary general Oupa Lebogo said in The Times. “If the matter doesn’t come up for discussion, we will push for a moratorium to be placed on the film.”

Hudson, who scooped a best supporting actress Oscar in 2007 for the musical “Dreamgirls”, landed the role of Madikizela-Mandela last month. The film will be directed by South African film-maker Darrell J. Roodt, whose films include “Cry, The Beloved Country” and “Sarafina.”

Greedy American actors always trying to take all the good parts…it’s time to give some other folks a little shine.

Oscar time again! They might already have the trailer over on BlackStar69.com.

  • skye

Actually South Africans have been complaining about EVERY flick that’s based on the struggle heroes and other important leaders/people being played by American or European actors. And why shouldn’t we, why must it take hollywood actors to play those parts. It’s insulting and absolutely not cool. And no offence to the chosen actors like J-Hud though, we love her, but it’s about time that we look to our own people to play our own leaders.

Trust I could careless about calling myself African American. I’ve never been there and don’t plan on visiting anytime soon either.. I’m not surprised by the reaction to this film, as I said before South Africans already think they are better, The director was on the radio and he isn’t changing his decision, which means you all need to get over it..

  • NaijaQueen

@ From Holland – I really need you to pick up a map and work on your spelling. Rwanda is in EAST CENTRAL Africa and Uganda is northeast of Rwanda.

What does the Creative Workers Union of SOUTH AFRICAN have to do with films made about either of the aforementioned nations?

In fact, if anyone on here HASN’T visited South Africa, I strongly encourage you to do so. Perhaps you’ll become a bit more educated. Some of you sound like read idiots.

House Negro vs. Filed Negro, after all these years. If South Africans, feel that their own actresses can portray Winnie better, they are free to fight for it, and should lobby to get local actors/actresses in the key roles!

  • Money First

The bottom line is this: It will be harder to take a new actress with “no name” and market a film successfully worldwide then it is with a “known”, critically acclaimed actress playing the role. If you put your money up for a film wouldn’t you want to make it back plus profit and not wonder if you even have a chance to make it back because you placed unknown actors in lead roles?

Then can take the South African actors and give them all of the other roles to keep it authentic! That would make more sense.

  • Janet Rocks

They wouldn’t have casted her if she wasn’t right for the role. Maybe they should hold auditions again and see if they like anyone more than Jenn.

Black/Africans need to stop hating on each other, we should be glad our story is getting told.

  • Glok…!

SORRY THATZ” HOW ARE YOU” ..DONT GET CHIT TWISTED, IM STILL BLAZING..MY BAD!

  • MochaDreams

If it was just about building up South Africa’s film industry, then they would have a point. However, the film makers that have the rights to the story are trying to make MONEY. So that means you need a recognizable actress as the headliner, period, point-blank. A film created strictly by South African film makers and with all South African actors and actresses could probably be just as good, but would likely have a slim chance of making it pass screenings at a film festival.

  • From Barbados with love

My, My, a mind truly is a terrible thing to waste. Last time I checked, racism and discrimination was not unique to South Africa. I hope the South African actors union get their wish to have one of their own play the role of Winnie. I think some of the writers here could benefit from reading Binyavanga Wainaina essay “How to Write about Africa” http://tinyurl.com/dd2p6j. After seeing some of the articles and comments here, this is one detour I am not likely to make again.

  • Reading is Fundamental

@Talent2….It’s the same issue going on in Hollywood with Black Actresses not landing jobs like the White Actresses. And black models not getting enough shine.

But heck, I think if Darrell J. Roodt Jennifer Hudson, let him be. I am sure the supporting cast will be South African. It will open doors for South African Actresses in the mainstream. I understand the racial tensions that exist between the White South Africans and the Black South Africans, the White South Africans being the Aggressors. I think this is a catalyst behind this whole issue. Darrell J. Roodt is a white producer, so I can see how the Black South Africans will get mad, not to mention Winnie Mandela’s significance to their History. But I still think Jennifer Hudson should get the part. Heck her ancestors are from Africa.
