Poor thang:
Lawyers for ex-NBA star Jayson Williams want to withdraw from his New Jersey manslaughter case, saying they’ve been unable to communicate with him.
But Williams told Somerset County Judge Edward Coleman yesterday he wants them to continue, given the amount of money he’s paid them. Coleman reserved decision and scheduled a Jan. 11 hearing on the issue. That date already had been set for jury selection in Williams’ retrial for the February 2002 shotgun killing of limo driver Costas “Gus” Christofi in Williams’ Alexandria Township mansion.
Williams’ behavior has been increasingly erratic over the past year as he has weighed pleading guilty in the long-pending case and serving a relatively brief prison sentence.
He was hospitalized earlier this year after a suicidal outburst in a Manhattan hotel that resulted in him being Tasered by cops. He was accused of physical and emotional abuse by his wife, Tanya, in a divorce action. Last month he failed to appear in court for a scheduled plea deal requiring him to serve at least 18 months in prison for the reduced charge of aggravated assault.
It’s not known if that plea offer, made by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, is still on the table. If Williams risks going to trial, he faces the possibility that he’ll get a much longer sentence if convicted of manslaughter. A lawyer for Williams did not return a request for comment.
Damn, Jayson. Remember when all the ladies thought he was ‘so fine’ with that Al B. Sure! slash Christopher Williams steez. SMH.
