A recent report puts permed up Al Sharpton on blast by accusing him of accepting bribes from companies who are being accused of racism. The way the hustle works is a company faces allegations of racism and passes stacks to Sharpton as a “consultant”:
Anheuser-Busch gave him six figures, Colgate-Palmolive shelled out $50,000 and Macy’s and Pfizer have contributed thousands to the Rev. Al Sharpton’s charity.
Almost 50 companies – including PepsiCo, General Motors, Wal-Mart, FedEx, Continental Airlines, Johnson & Johnson and Chase – and some labor unions sponsored Sharpton’s National Action Network annual conference in April. Terrified of negative publicity, fearful of a consumer boycott or eager to make nice with the civil-rights activist, CEOs write checks, critics say, to NAN and Sharpton – who brandishes the buying power of African-American consumers. In some cases, they hire him as a consultant.
The cash flows even as the US Attorney’s Office in Brooklyn has been conducting a grand-jury investigation of NAN’s finances.

I’m not surprised. Al’s activities have been suspect for a long time. He once brokered a cocaine deal that the DEA had taped, and he played the denial role on 60 minutes. He took like 500K to make it seem like 50 & Game were ok. He’s always been corrupt. Dear Bossip…be very careful when you sneeringly refer to “old civil rights negroes..” many of those so-called negroes are responsible for your ignorant ***** having civil rights despite the racism that dominates our society. You tar them with a wide and unfair brushstroke. Rev. Al does not represent the majority of black people in America but he does get out there and until someone more worthy steps up and agitates as much as he has, then this is best we got. I’m hoping more politicians like Obama will wrest the so-called mantle of leadership from the questionable characters like Rev. Al, but again, until that happens I’m not one to ask him to shut up.

Nothing illegal about what he is doing. No one is making these companies hire him as a consultant as long as the companies do not go to the authorities and say they felt extortion was involved and Al pays his taxes he should be okay.

I’ve been hearing rumblings about this shakedown scam for years. Sharpton and Jackson stay locked on this type of sheister game. I heard Jackson puts his son in corporate positions by this method. Them shuffling negroes are not looking out for their people. Their lining their pockets and making an artform out of nepotissism.
Al Sharpton attempted to shake down Ice Cube for cash also. Remember when Ice Cube made that movie “Barber Shop”? Al Sharpton threatend to boycott the movie because of the Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King refrences. Ice Cube claimed that Al Sharpton was just trying to extort him for cash.
It is a pure shame if this story is true. We as Some Black folks already have a rep that they can be bought. I believe that is why alot of those who stayed with Hillary to the end did so because of payout. The clinton’s probably funded their campaigns. These people got to go, they will sell us all out for the right price.

So what if these big corp paid him consulting fees, they need to pay somebody for their crimes. And I don’t see any of us paying Rev Sharpton any salary for being a moving target for us while we go to work and read/watch his many activities that try to help those of us in need. Even your Sunday preacher gets his salary from our tithes, but not Rev Sharpton. No matter how you try twisting it, it ain’t your money its theirs so unless you’re gonna start paying the Rev for all that he does, YOU need to STFU and let him do his thing and quit hating. I’m glad somebody has stepped up to do his “job” so stop worrying about how he survives when you’re not contributing to him or anyone else involved in our struggle. I don’t believe everything I hear, nor read, and sometimes what I see. I treat situations like this, the same way I do about giving money to the homeless. I give because it is right in the eyes of God. Now if that person is not truly in need, and just greedy then that is up to God to deal with. I have no heaven or hell to put anyone in. I don’t always agree with Al, however, I will say that he has done more for the movement of justice that all of us posting put together. Now whether he is shady or not let God deal with him, because only He has the power to do so anyway.
This reminds me of a chapeter that I was reading I think in The Power of a Praying Woman, or The Secret Things of God. It said something to the effect of how people believe everything they hear in the media, but will doubt scriptures in the Bible.
Oh, I get it, you expect a person to be perfect to be a leader, huh? Flawless, right? You probably can’t name one organization that has one of those– not your church, not your family, h*ll not even our country! Did you “elect” Bush? I didn’t, but still he leads. Like or not, agree or don’t, Rev Sharpton is a leader in the Black community. We don’t have to agree with all of his speeches, but as long as he is taking a stand for my people then he should be supported. And if you chose not to, that’s fine too, but don’t discredit him just because you disagree. We need folk like him to be loud & visible to keep the folk in power in check. Think about that as you go about your day tomorrow as if not for the activities of him & folks like him you azz would still be ridin in the back of the bus! Amazing how “Divide & Conquer” is still relevant today.

Too many of us educated African-Americans only use our skills to help ourselves, only worry about the man in the mirror. But we should be helping those who aren’t as learned and fortunate and be defenders of our community when social issues arise. You can knock Rev Al and other Black leaders all you want, but these are brave men as they put themselves in harms way when they are outspoken about things that White Amerikkka despises–like affirmative action & racial equality.
