    Butterfly McQueen 2009
    ————————
Truth be told, Butterfly McQueen was never proud of the role she played in Gone With The Wind. She lived in my neighborhood for many years when I was growing up and anytime someone mentioned that role she became very embarrassed. But I guess at that time you had to take the roles offered to you if you wanted to work in Hollywood. Like Hattie McDaniels said “I’d rather play a maid than be one” Food for thought.

  • I’m just saying………………….

THat’s what I am saying, Hebrew!!! And we are so caught up in the moment that we can’t see what an insult this is. This the only time white america feels that we do a good job, in these roles.

  • http://aol ebonieladi

However, nowadays you don’t have to take demeaning roles but the pickings are still slim in Hollywood for Black actors and actresses so you have to play the hell out of the roles you do get.

    I’m just saying………………….

Seriously. Maybe it’s true what “they” say about Black people. They sure like to drink the Kool-Aid. Pun intended.

  • Its6amHoGetOut

    @ Chaka1,

I’d do it and it would be a lot more harsh than “mammy” I’d then request that you go and get Emmitt Perry and R.Kelly, I may as well kill 3 birds with one very big stone!

  • Karen

I guess Beyounce will see now she really can’t act.

  • Get Real

Karen……life is too short to hate someone you don’t know. How did Bey even get into the convo. There can be a blog about how dog $hit turn white. A Beyonce hater will find a way to inject her name.

Yeah……..awwwwwwwwww Beyonce want to be white.

  • Elana

    Congratulations Gabby & Monique !!!

  • Elana

Karen, Jesus stated that we should love each other.

  • eveinthegarden

…first of all, BIGUPS to my soror Hattie McDaniel for being the FIRST African American to win an Oscar PERIOD. EEEYIP!

What will be crazy is to see MoNique win before someone like Angela Bassett. MoNique said something about how the rawness of the role frightened her.

Ladies, yall are going to have to get down and dirty. Shock the people.

Thats why Charlize Theron won for “Monster”. You hardly thought that was the same woman. Thats why Denzel won for Training Day. I remember sitting in the theater unable to process that Denzel was really a villian.

Hollywood wants to see people STRETCH. Good luck to Mo and Gabrielle if they win.

Why does every ignorant black person believe that we as a people are a monolithic unit ? The big, black girl in Precious ,IF she wins, should represent HERSELF, THE ACTRESS, NOT THE BLACK RACE !!!! When Dustin Hoffman won for Rain Man, did you hear white people saying ” they must think we are all retards” Same thing with Charlize Theron, Anthony Hopkins etc They were acting ! Their roles did not reflect the white community. Same thing with the actresses with Precious. Do you want a situation where white producers look past giving black actresses the very few roles available , because of social pressures ?
Awards in Hollywood are by and large distributed not on merit, but popularity. Or sway of opinion. Denzel should have won an Oscar for Malcolm X, everyone knows that. Spike Lee opened his big mouth and white people got pissed, and they voted for someone else. The award for Training Day was not his best role, he knew it, we all knew it- but it was a make-up call for overlooking him for Malcolm X.

Also, I was unaware, until I read the NYT article, that John Singleton is the only black director to be nominated for an Oscar in the directing category, and no film directed by an African American (not even Spike Lee) has been nominated for Best Picture.

    *”poverty p-o-r-n”*

  • lurker

I’m surprised Lee Daniels wasn’t nominated for Best Director. He did wonderfully with this project.

  • sexcblack

Read the book, seen the film and I think both do each other justice

  • peter illyich

JUSDATRUTH – you is a fool. I think Oprah and Tyler Perry have more foresight than you. They are not promoting negativity they are promoting a black film that is excellent on many levels. The very fact that it has generated so much discourse means it succeeded.

  • Mr. Ross

PRECIOUS was meh.. THE HURT LOCKER was one of the best war flicks ive seen in a while.
