“Precious” Receives Three Gloden Globe Nominations

Before “Precious” even hit the theaters, the movie was generating Oscar buzz. The nominations for the Golden Globes are out, and Precious has three nods total.

I think I need to read the book. I never watch the movie once I’ve read the book, but in this case, I wanted to see the movie first.

However, I think once I read it, I’ll realize that the movie doesn’t do the book justice…as is usually the case. I just wanted to support my blaque people, although I did download it and watched it sittin in front of my computer the day it came out…I meant EMOTIONAL support.

Has anyone read it?

I don’t know why I can’t make myself see this movie. My sorority sister saw it. She said it was disturbing to watch. She said at points she had to just get up and got to the restroom just to get break from it.

It disturbs me that this is someone in my community’s reality. It hurts me to know that.

Truth be told, Butterfly McQueen was never proud of the role she played in Gone With The Wind. She lived in my neighborhood for many years when I was growing up and anytime someone mentioned that role she became very embarrassed. But I guess at that time you had to take the roles offered to you if you wanted to work in Hollywood. Like Hattie McDaniels said “I’d rather play a maid than be one” Food for thought.

Sidney Poitier won for Lillies in the Field. He played a handyman.

Forest Whitaker won for The Last King of Scotland. He played a dictator.

Jamie Fox won for Ray. He played a musician.

Halle Berry won for Monster’s Ball. She played a woman on the edge.

Lou Gossette Jr won for A Soldiers Story. He played a military sergeant.

Morgan Freeman won for Million Dollar Baby. He played a boxing coach.

Hattie McDaniel won for Gone with the Wind. She played a house mammy (if you analyze the movie, she is the moral conscious in the household who practically stole the movie).

Jennifer Hudson won for Dreamgirls. She played a singer.

Prince, Issac Hayes, Stevie Wonder and Lionel Richie won for music.

White actors have won for playing killer lesbians, psychos, serial killers, abusive parents, drunks, drug addicts, sex fiends, etc. It’s called ACTING. If the fat mammy can act, let her win.

I am proud of every single black actor who has ever been nominated or won an academy award. We have nothing to be ashamed of. And yes, we have come a long way.

@everyone else: I’m curious, what type of role/character do you think a black person has to portray to deserve an oscar. The most emotionally gripping characters are the ones that win or are nominated. Name a (black) character/movie from the last 5-10 years that was oscar worthy but was not at least nominated. No Tyler Perry accepted.

@Chaka, I agree!! Black folks are always the first to complain, but other than Tyler Perry movies, do we support our own? I saw Spike’s movie, Miracle of St. Anna (might be misquoting the title) and thought that was a really good movie, but how many of us supported that? Same with Oprah’s Beloved years ago. If you read the book and really paid attention to the storyline, you’d realize that was also a good movie. Negroes please, we don’t support our own when there are decent projects out there, but wanna complain…about “coonery” and such? If you don’t like what’s out there, change it!!

As a brown girl I am getting sick & tired of only light skin women on screen been seen as desirable & educated. Even in our on black movies we are portrayed as mamies. When I was growing up in the 80′s I knew 2 mothers who were as abusive as Moniques character & they are both light skin. One had green eyes.

Why does every ignorant black person believe that we as a people are a monolithic unit ? The big, black girl in Precious ,IF she wins, should represent HERSELF, THE ACTRESS, NOT THE BLACK RACE !!!! When Dustin Hoffman won for Rain Man, did you hear white people saying ” they must think we are all retards” Same thing with Charlize Theron, Anthony Hopkins etc They were acting ! Their roles did not reflect the white community. Same thing with the actresses with Precious. Do you want a situation where white producers look past giving black actresses the very few roles available , because of social pressures ?
Awards in Hollywood are by and large distributed not on merit, but popularity. Or sway of opinion. Denzel should have won an Oscar for Malcolm X, everyone knows that. Spike Lee opened his big mouth and white people got pissed, and they voted for someone else. The award for Training Day was not his best role, he knew it, we all knew it- but it was a make-up call for overlooking him for Malcolm X.

I recall the first time I saw “Monster,” and how much respect I gained for Theron for her portrayal of a serial killer. She was utterly unrecognizable in every aspect. She gave humanity to a woman whose murderous acts were reprehensible.

I was similarly shaken by Mo’Nique’s exceedingly raw acting in “Precious.” After learning about her own childhood experience with abuse, it is even more remarkable to me that she was able to pour herself into such an emotionally taxing role. I also look forward to seeing Morgan Freeman’s portrayal of Nelson Mandela in “Invictus,” and I’m glad to see such a talented actor nominated after enjoying many of his performances through the years.

I am disappointed that Lee Daniels didn’t receive a Best Director nod, and it reminded me of a New York Times article I read in the past week about the dearth of Oscar-level recognition for African-American directors who continue to struggle to bring their work to the big screen. Below is an excerpt on how other sister and brother directors viewed the attention paid to “Precious”:
