I think I need to read the book. I never watch the movie once I’ve read the book, but in this case, I wanted to see the movie first.
However, I think once I read it, I’ll realize that the movie doesn’t do the book justice…as is usually the case. I just wanted to support my blaque people, although I did download it and watched it sittin in front of my computer the day it came out…I meant EMOTIONAL support.
Has anyone read it?

I don’t know why I can’t make myself see this movie. My sorority sister saw it. She said it was disturbing to watch. She said at points she had to just get up and got to the restroom just to get break from it.
It disturbs me that this is someone in my community’s reality. It hurts me to know that.

they really should win at least one of these.

Of course Hollyweird is going to give this movie an Oscar. Just like they gave an Oscar to Denzel for playing a corrupt cop and one to Halle for grinding on an ole stank genetic recessive and Hattie McDaniel for playing a Mammy stereotype fond to the hearts of albinos.
See a trend here, my people?
CiCi 12/15/09, 03:53:PM
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAy MONIQUE is nominated. I was scared for a second. Because she did acted her azz off. Congratulations Monique and Gab….that is right more of our African Americans are stepping it up
So this mean they might get nominated for an oscar right???????????

OMG. seriously folks another AWARD BUZZ for some white man’s coonery? white ppl kill me but black folks who don’t know any better kill me more.
this movie was OK. thats it. OK. Not great, not great acting. Just loud yelling and waterfalls of tears from every damn actor on screen.
Lets see how either of the 2 lead actresses fare in OTHER productions here on out. White hollywood loves to give props to us for COONING.
Thats why they love TYLER PERRY and MONSTERS BALL and TRAINING DAY. they love to continually perpetuate the same tired ass stereotypes.

Butterfly McQueen 2009
————————
Truth be told, Butterfly McQueen was never proud of the role she played in Gone With The Wind. She lived in my neighborhood for many years when I was growing up and anytime someone mentioned that role she became very embarrassed. But I guess at that time you had to take the roles offered to you if you wanted to work in Hollywood. Like Hattie McDaniels said “I’d rather play a maid than be one” Food for thought.
I'm just saying...................... 12/15/09, 04:35:PM
THat’s what I am saying, Hebrew!!! And we are so caught up in the moment that we can’t see what an insult this is. This the only time white america feels that we do a good job, in these roles.
WAKEUPSUCKAS 12/15/09, 04:36:PM
@EBONIELADI
Well its not 1867 anymore and that old slave mentality needs to kick rocks LIKE YESTERDAY.
“Id rather play a made than be one?”
in 2010 is like saying
“Id rather play a cooning, embarrassing slave than be one?”
Give me a break. its time to step it up and out of the stereotypes
ebonieladi 12/15/09, 04:37:PM
However, nowadays you don’t have to take demeaning roles but the pickings are still slim in Hollywood for Black actors and actresses so you have to play the hell out of the roles you do get.
Dumb Dumd 12/15/09, 04:40:PM
Oh I thought that was the picture for the new King Kong Movie!!!! OOOOPS my bad
ebonieladi 12/15/09, 04:42:PM
@wakeupsuckas
You are right however when we do step up out of the stereotypes, we don’t support these movies. It’s a two-sided game. If we want to see more positive movies then we have to get up off our a$$es and support them. The only thing Hollywood understands is GREEN.

@KMB926 and @We Blacks
Let’s look at Oscar wins. Shall we?
Whoopie Goldberg won for Ghost. She played a medium.
Sidney Poitier won for Lillies in the Field. He played a handyman.
Forest Whitaker won for The Last King of Scotland. He played a dictator.
Jamie Fox won for Ray. He played a musician.
Halle Berry won for Monster’s Ball. She played a woman on the edge.
Lou Gossette Jr won for A Soldiers Story. He played a military sergeant.
Morgan Freeman won for Million Dollar Baby. He played a boxing coach.
Hattie McDaniel won for Gone with the Wind. She played a house mammy (if you analyze the movie, she is the moral conscious in the household who practically stole the movie).
Jennifer Hudson won for Dreamgirls. She played a singer.
Prince, Issac Hayes, Stevie Wonder and Lionel Richie won for music.
White actors have won for playing killer lesbians, psychos, serial killers, abusive parents, drunks, drug addicts, sex fiends, etc. It’s called ACTING. If the fat mammy can act, let her win.
I am proud of every single black actor who has ever been nominated or won an academy award. We have nothing to be ashamed of. And yes, we have come a long way.

This movie just didn’t do it for me at all but Mo’nique was good in that role.
@Bennie: WTF are you talking about you self-hating ignorant %^$&^. Neither of them played a mammy and newsflash, not all heavy darkskinned women are mammys.
@everyone else: I’m curious, what type of role/character do you think a black person has to portray to deserve an oscar. The most emotionally gripping characters are the ones that win or are nominated. Name a (black) character/movie from the last 5-10 years that was oscar worthy but was not at least nominated. No Tyler Perry accepted.
I’m with Chaka…a black person gotta play a saint for ya’ll? Are you dealing in reality at all?
Just Sit And Be Pretty 12/15/09, 05:06:PM
@Chaka, I agree!! Black folks are always the first to complain, but other than Tyler Perry movies, do we support our own? I saw Spike’s movie, Miracle of St. Anna (might be misquoting the title) and thought that was a really good movie, but how many of us supported that? Same with Oprah’s Beloved years ago. If you read the book and really paid attention to the storyline, you’d realize that was also a good movie. Negroes please, we don’t support our own when there are decent projects out there, but wanna complain…about “coonery” and such? If you don’t like what’s out there, change it!!

OMG…………SAD BUT TRUE!
As a brown girl I am getting sick & tired of only light skin women on screen been seen as desirable & educated. Even in our on black movies we are portrayed as mamies. When I was growing up in the 80′s I knew 2 mothers who were as abusive as Moniques character & they are both light skin. One had green eyes.
chaka1 12/15/09, 05:25:PM
I also want to put some of you in a room with Monique and ask you to call her a mammy to her face.
Its6amHoGetOut 12/15/09, 06:22:PM
@ Chaka1,
I’d do it and it would be a lot more harsh than “mammy” I’d then request that you go and get Emmitt Perry and R.Kelly, I may as well kill 3 birds with one very big stone!
LovinMJ81 12/15/09, 06:25:PM
We are the only race that continues to tear one another down. We can never be truly happy for these ladies. A movie with this much abuse hasn’t been on the screen since the Color Purple. People like Wakeupsuckas need to get a grip and stop hating.
@ Chaka1
Thanks for the lesson!

…first of all, BIGUPS to my soror Hattie McDaniel for being the FIRST African American to win an Oscar PERIOD. EEEYIP!
What will be crazy is to see MoNique win before someone like Angela Bassett. MoNique said something about how the rawness of the role frightened her.
Ladies, yall are going to have to get down and dirty. Shock the people.
Thats why Charlize Theron won for “Monster”. You hardly thought that was the same woman. Thats why Denzel won for Training Day. I remember sitting in the theater unable to process that Denzel was really a villian.
Hollywood wants to see people STRETCH. Good luck to Mo and Gabrielle if they win.
peter illyich 12/15/09, 07:41:PM
Why does every ignorant black person believe that we as a people are a monolithic unit ? The big, black girl in Precious ,IF she wins, should represent HERSELF, THE ACTRESS, NOT THE BLACK RACE !!!! When Dustin Hoffman won for Rain Man, did you hear white people saying ” they must think we are all retards” Same thing with Charlize Theron, Anthony Hopkins etc They were acting ! Their roles did not reflect the white community. Same thing with the actresses with Precious. Do you want a situation where white producers look past giving black actresses the very few roles available , because of social pressures ?
Awards in Hollywood are by and large distributed not on merit, but popularity. Or sway of opinion. Denzel should have won an Oscar for Malcolm X, everyone knows that. Spike Lee opened his big mouth and white people got pissed, and they voted for someone else. The award for Training Day was not his best role, he knew it, we all knew it- but it was a make-up call for overlooking him for Malcolm X.
Sydney™ 12/15/09, 07:51:PM
“Ladies, yall are going to have to get down and dirty. Shock the people.
Thats why Charlize Theron won for “Monster”.”
I recall the first time I saw “Monster,” and how much respect I gained for Theron for her portrayal of a serial killer. She was utterly unrecognizable in every aspect. She gave humanity to a woman whose murderous acts were reprehensible.
I was similarly shaken by Mo’Nique’s exceedingly raw acting in “Precious.” After learning about her own childhood experience with abuse, it is even more remarkable to me that she was able to pour herself into such an emotionally taxing role. I also look forward to seeing Morgan Freeman’s portrayal of Nelson Mandela in “Invictus,” and I’m glad to see such a talented actor nominated after enjoying many of his performances through the years.
I am disappointed that Lee Daniels didn’t receive a Best Director nod, and it reminded me of a New York Times article I read in the past week about the dearth of Oscar-level recognition for African-American directors who continue to struggle to bring their work to the big screen. Below is an excerpt on how other sister and brother directors viewed the attention paid to “Precious”:
nytimes.com/2009/12/12/movies/12race.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=precious&st=cse
Its stark portrayal of the urban poor has provoked debate among black viewers, some of whom have tagged it as “poverty porn.” But its inspirational message has started a swell in Hollywood, where black filmmakers speak of “Precious” as their own best hope.
“It’s a miracle that ‘Precious’ got through,” said Kasi Lemmons, whose directing credits include “Eve’s Bayou.” The attention given “Precious,” she added, “gives me reason to live.”
