Unfortunately we live in a very unforgiving culture. I can honestly say that if I were in that position (same as Elin) my decision would be based upon the attitude and actions of my wife after the proverbial “ish” hit the fan. Did she take responsibility and take serious actions to make ammends? If so… I’d have to at least listen.

My life has definately had its ups and downs. What I’ve learned is that people are imperfect and the measure of forgivness that I show others (especially my wife) is the same measure I can expect for myself.

Marraige is not something to thow away like a disposable diaper everytime it gets soiled. Its more like the cloth diapers with the safety pins that you wash out with bleach and detergent and re-use.

I suppose this is where we disagree. I wouldn’t expect forgiveness from my husband if I violated his trust by having intercourse with multiple men. I know for a fact that women fall victim to temptation just as much as men do. But there is a big difference. Women seldom get caught and they have selective memories (ie. amnesia) while a man will sit there at home sending texts, emails, and voicemails. Again… I see where you are coming from but I suggest you like my friend Sydney revisit your working definition of the word FORGIVE.

If your bank sent you a letter and told you that they are going to forgive your mortgage debt on your house you’d be glad wouldn’t you. But then the following month you get a second letter and in this letter they are telling you that even though your mortgage debt is forgiven they still expect you to make your monthly payments until you’ve repayed EVERY penney they loaned you I’d bet that smile on your face would turn upsidedown real quick. Just because you bear the immediate consequenses of your actions doesn’t mean you have paid the debt and are forgiven. Forgivness is something unmerited. That means you couldn’t earn it even if you tried but rather it must be given freely. If it is something you earn then I don’t believe forgivness is the correct term to use.

Now TRUST on the other hand is something to be earned. It is sensible to tell a person I am wanting to forgive you for what you did to me but I am having a hard time trusting you now. Well, forgiveness of a financial debt is not the same as forgiveness of sins. I’m sure you well understand that the same word can have different meanings when used in different contexts.

Forgiveness of sins from God’s viewpoint means release from the ultimate penalty of hellfire.

Forgiveness of sins from a human’s viewpoint means the sincere release of ill will or a desire to “punish” or “payback” the transgressor.

The ultimate penalty for ALL unrepented sins is death. When God forgives us, He releases us from that ultimate penalty. However, sins have other consequences other than the ultimate penalty. For example, God may forgive someone for the sin of adultery, but he may not heal that person of a sexually transmitted disease that person contracted during the course of their infidelity.

The term “forget” can have different meanings in different contexts also. When God says he “forgets”, He means that the ultimate penalty is “wiped off the books”, but the action or actions that caused that penalty are still on record. When a bank forgives (writes off) a debt, there are still consequences and penalties that accrue to the debtor. The bank still keeps a record of the forgiven debt and the written off debt will appear on the debtor’s credit report for a time. Although the debtor no longer has to repay the bank, they still have to deal with the consequences of having a “charged off” debt on their credit report.

When Moses was leading the nation of Israel in the wilderness and they needed water, God told Moses to speak to a rock and water would issue forth. Moses struck the rock with his staff which gave the appearance that Moses was causing the water to flow rather than God. God FORGAVE Moses for this disobedience, which was a form of lying to the Israelites. However, even though Moses was forgiven for this transgression, God forbade him from entering the promised land because of it.

I don’t see a paradox at all. A wise man may never be able to re-earn the trust of his wife because his wife may exercise her option not to have a relationship with him anymore. The consequence of the husband’s transgression may be that, although she forgives him, she may no longer desire him as a husband. Love, like trust, can be created and it can be destroyed.

Certainly, you can’t get someone to trust you if they are not willing to deal with you at all.

We only have different definitions of forgivness for different situations because we choose to. I think in some cases you use the term forgive when you really mean forebear.

You say that “The ultimate penalty for ALL unrepented sins is death.” (The wages of sin is death) But I am sure you know that the bible teaches us that repenting alone is not sufficient to have one’s “sin debt” forgiven (There shall be no remission of sin without the shedding of blood). But due to the fact that (without righteousness no man shall be able to stand before God) and none of us are righteous on our own accord our blood cannot suffice for our sins. This is where mercy comes into the forgivness equation. Where God takes the righteousness of Jesus Christ and counts it as yours and mine so that we are then able to stand before him.

Do you realize that there are some men who end up cheating because of a lack of emotional fullfillment from theirs wives as well? And some cheat because of a lack of sexual fulfillment. And some cheat because of the aspect of our culture that equates the the quality of a man with the quantity of females he is able to attract. Considerin’ his riches, and fame? I’d say (maybe) 45 to 50. He should’ve followed in the footsteps of Warren Beatty. He didn’t settle down until he was well into his late 50′s.
