Family of Quadruplets All Get Accepted into Yale’s Class of 2014

This is such a great story:

Ray Crouch, a senior at Danbury High School, logged onto the computer in his family’s living room just after 5 p.m. on Tuesday and entered the Web site of the Yale admissions office.Suddenly the screen turned blue — Yale blue — and an image of a bulldog, the university mascot, appeared, followed by “Welcome to the Class of 2014.” Ray, 18, had been offered a spot in the next freshman class, under its early-admission program. Standing behind him, his mother, Caroline, screamed.

But that was only the beginning. Moments later, Ray’s brother, Kenny, also 18, went to the Yale site and got an identical message. He was followed by their sister Carol. Same news. Then the room fell silent. Ray, Kenny and Carol are quadruplets, and their sister Martina had applied to Yale, too. “I was thinking, it’s going to be really awkward when I don’t get in,” Martina recalled Friday. But the computer turned blue for her as well, which prompted such an outpouring of joy from their mother that she wrestled their father, Steven, to the floor in a hug. The Crouches’ perfect batting average represents a first for Yale — the first time in anyone’s memory that it has offered admission to quadruplets. It is also, of course, no small milestone for the siblings, who were born more than two months premature. (Ray was the last to be released from the neonatal unit, more than four months later.) They made up for that rough start. Their class rankings range from 13 out of a class of 632 (Kenny) to 46 (Martina) — and they have sky-high SAT scores (including Carol’s perfect 800 on the verbal part of that exam).

One advantage that Yale may hold in landing the four Crouch children is that they seem reluctant to part, after being inseparable for so long. Which is not to say they have not imagined what it would be like to go solo.

As Kenny put it: “It might be fun to go somewhere where I’m not ‘one of the quads.’ ”

This is the stuff we like to hear…keep up the good work.

There is so much negative stuff published about the Black community so something this spectacular should be published everywhere. According to the article, there are intrigued by several schools, and have submitted applications to various institutions. I, my parents, and brother are very familiar with NYU, UPenn, and Brown, so, I hope the Crouch children know that these institutions are a wise selection for their desired fields of study. Whatever school they choose, I wish them success.

  • Real Talk

    @Derri

    I agree with “Biracial Pride.”

Bi-racial pride is a concept that should be embraced and if such groups come out in numbers (i.e., strength in numbers starting with Obama, Alicia Keys, Swiss Beats, Mariah, Halle Berry, to name a few), this concept could grow into a new phenomenon, like the so-called gay pride, etc. Who knows? Every concept has to starts from somewhere! (Had the (black) New Haven, CT Heming Family not embraced being Bi-racial and traced their DNA based upon a true family story about them descendants of President Thomas Jefferson, they would not have access and privilege to the the White House with benefits of being descendants of President Thomas Jefferson’s.) The truth is it takes work & effort to bring the concept of “Biracial Pride”(the best of different worlds) to life where it will be embraced by all. Fear, hatred, jealousy, and backlash from certain groups of simple-minded, self-loathing blacks tend to have a problem with “Bi-racial Pride.” go figure.

  • Mariana

thats wasup!!! for real keep inspiring

  • her?yeah,her

SWEET! it is great to see this posting amid so much negativity. hey, how about a reality show with these kids? it could show how their good habits, hard work , dedication, respect for education and supportive parents really do pay off instead of like, what we normally see on t.v. just a thought.

  • Deirdre B Pride

Ginny Crow, kick rocks you stupid h*e. Bet you couldn’t score a perfect on any effin thing racist cu*t.

CONGRATS TO THE PARENTS AND THE KIDS!!!!

You should be able to embrace your combined heritage as a whole. If your black and white, your shouldn’t be considered black because that’s asking you to deny your white heritage which is wrong. By the same token though, whites should also be proud of their heritage and not be made to feel guilty about past wrong doings.

  • alumni

this is awesome and im so happy for them, but on a realistic note how the hell are they going to pay for 4 kids to go to yale?? tuition alone is 35k not to mention room and board and books… i hope they receive some kind of donation or scholarship

  • ms k

@pillar….Do you have fever with those fits…Gosh!!!!! WTF do you mean white ass.I’m 100% NEGRO…and love it….Calm down…

  • kec

It’s great to check the blog and for once a positive story! Great job and congrats to the parents, I know they must be beyond overjoyed!

  • blackgirl

Awesome job kids! Why do people always wonder why biracial people are considered black? That was an actual law and I think it still is and just not enforced. Talk to your elders and you will find out that this was actually the law. 1 percent black and you were black period end dot and treated as such. Its just a little history as to why people consider biracial folks black. It was/still is law! Although, that has nothing to do with the monumental steps these kids took.

  • karen

The Quad’s ethnicity probably isn’t the big deal. The story stands out because they are quadruplets and were admitted to the same Ivy League school. African Americans/Blacks/Coloreds/Negroes are admitted to and GRADUATE from college (Ivy League, etc.) all of the time-not really a big deal. Quadruplet’s attending the same Univ. at the same time is a rarity. Hopefully they are all on scholarship or get a hell a financial aid package.

  • WordtotheWise

People are on here talking about biracial pride, when so many black people lack pride in whom they are. Please. Give me a break. Black pride is a thing of the past with many people today. I don’t care if you are biracial, triracial, no racial – you should love yourself regardless. I love my black self. Unfortunately many blacks base their worth on how white people or others see them.

FYI – most white people are proud of their heritage. Trust and believe, most of them wouldn’t trade it for the world. It’s called white privilege. Past wrong doings? How about present? Trust me, most whites benefit from it. Not racist – just saying.

  • nahnah

Sorry to spoil the “party,” but people get accepted to college everyday, so what’s the big deal? Is it because it’s one of those grossly overpriced elitist schools?

I, too, was a “brainy” high school student. I graduated high school approx. 10 years ago, and I got a full ride to many schools, but I chose Rutgers University in New Jersey, and I truly believe I received just as good of an education as I would have received if I went to Yale.

I then attended Columbia for grad school, but I only spent a semester there because I was extremely discontent with the lack of academic freedom at that school, and also the systemic stifling of free speech. I am now finishing up my Masters at New School University, and I have no complaints.

QUESTION: What if these kids were off to their state school, which, apparently, is the University of Connecticut (a highly ranked school, known for its academics amongst other things, yet is way cheaper than Yale) would it have made the news?

  • Tina

Exactly at nahnah. Who gives a damn? I’ll say it. I don’t understand why black folk get so happy to be going to these overpriced, overhyped, white elitist schools. That didnt even allow negroes in before. My family is having the same discussion about a cousin of mine who is attending an Ivy League school just to have it on her resume. Big deal. The way this world is going anyway she’d be lucky if she could get a job at McDonalds let alone a high paying job in her career field. What’s so bad about going to your local state school? Or any school that isn’t Ivy League? Congrats because you are going to some stuffy white school with a bunch of rich snubs?

  • Tina

Oh yeah funny this wasn’t under something stupid like “swirl love”. When “swirl love” creates a story like this – its’not swirl anything anymore right? It’s just a great black story then, huh? Funny.

  • Tina

Question. It says two girls two boys….um I see one girl. Who is the other girl?

in the article the quads applied for early admission that’s why it said class 2014.

  • Very News Worthy!

    @NahNah

Of course it would not have made the news because many quads get accepted into State Schools but Not Ivy League. Uniqueness is what separates us and makes us stand out. How many Black families can say that all 4 of their children attended an Ivy League school based on their achievements? Even more, all of these kids qualified at the same time (Quads). This says a lot about their hard working parents. There is nothing unique about your story or mine compared to these kids. That’s why it is deserves so much attention. They will go on to do big things in life whereas you are bitter and have a chip on your shoulder. They are so unique that they do not care what others thinks, have their own style or flavor and still made it to the Ivy League. Congrats to our these Quads and their Parents for all of their hard work. Very news worthy!

    @CocoaGyal,

I was making that point about Nigerian parents. They care about education and FAMILY. Something sourly lacking in the black American.

  • Kigali- I will check you

  • nahnah

    Ihate APUSH:

You are the master of the non-sequitur, I see.

Comparing UConn and Yale is like comparing Qtip and some lesser known brand of cotton swab. Both clean the boogers out your ears, but one has a more recognizable brand, thus making it more valuable in the eyes of the average, highly indoctrinated American consumer. Yes, I say consumer because higher education is a business.

Anyway, this, to me, and those who don’t salivate over these over-hyped ivy leagues, is not news-worthy.

    @ Kigali

While I understand what you are saying about Nigerian parents, I think that many black North American parents (I am Canadian) promote education as well.

My parents are both highly educated with respected and rewarding careers, my sister is pursuing her PhD, I am off to graduate school next year, and my brother is studying Law. My parents have also been married (very happily) for 25+ years and we have a healthy familial relationship.

Maybe I misinterpreted the point you were trying to get across, but there are still “Black” families that are promoting education.

Regardless, I’m really happy for this family and I don’t understand why there is so much negativity from some people on this thread! Why does this always happen? When some blacks are on the road to achieving great things why do certain individuals in our community continually try to tear them down? What ever happened to supporting others in their endeavours WITHOUT holding a grudge? I cannot believe some of the comments I am reading!

    SAD.
