Jesus Take The Wheel: EMTs On Break Let Pregnant Woman Die

FDNY officials are investigating a December 9th incident when two EMTs buying breakfast at a Brooklyn Au Bon Pain 600 feet from FDNY headquarters refused service to a pregnant woman suffering a seizure because they were on break. The woman, 25-year-old Eutisha Revee Rennix, suffered cardiac arrest and died shortly after.

Workers at the Au Bon Pain at 1 Metrotech Center approached the FDNY medics in question at 9 a.m. on Dec. 9, after Rennix, who worked at the coffee shop, complained of shortness of breath and intense stomach pains. Fellow employees dialed 911 immediately. Amidst cries of, “She’s turning blue! She’s pregnant,” co-workers sought attention from the EMT’s who were present. Workers say they were advised by the medics to dial 911, then, after claiming their bagels, the EMTs left.

“I remember them saying they couldn’t do anything because they were on their break… We started screaming and cursing at them,” a witness recalled.

Desperately in need of medical attention, Rennix fell to the floor of the back office and began foaming at the nose and mouth. When the store manager rushed out to make a second appeal for help, two officials in blue FDNY sweaters ran to the back to assist. While one called 911 from his cellphone, the other attempted to help keep Rennix still. Meanwhile the manager ran to look for help from across the plaza. The first ambulance on the scene was a private hospital crew that arrived 11 minutes after the initial 911 call, but the FDNY has confirmed that that crew’s actions are also being investigated. Witnesses said the EMTs didn’t have one of the equipment bags needed to administer aid.

“I couldn’t believe it. The whole thing was like a bad joke,” an eyewitness said.

In cardiac arrest, Rennix was rushed to Long Island College Hospital a mile away at approximately 9:48 a.m. Police records show she was pronounced dead at 10:17. Rennix’s 6-month-old fetus, a girl, was born too premature to survive and died two hours and 10 minutes later. The baby, posthumously named Jahniya Renne Woodson, was buried alongside her mother Friday (12/18) at Canarsie Cemetary. Rennix is survived by her three-year-old son, Jahleel, her mother Cynthia Rennix and twin brother Eudane Rennix, a GI, who flew home on emergency leave from his second tour in Iraq to attend the funeral. The family said aside from some recently diagnosed issues with asthma Rennix was in good health.

The Fire Department has placed the two EMTs on paid but restricted duty, prohibiting them from providing patient care while the matter is investigated.

“All of our members take an oath to assist others in need of emergency medical aid. They have a duty to act when called,” said FDNY spokesman Steve Ritea.

Head of the EMS-union Pat Bahnken says the allegations against the EMTs are being taken seriously.

“Such an isolated incident in no way reflects the professionalism our members exhibit every day. But, if a full investigation shows the allegations to be true, we expect these people to be punished to the fullest extent,” he said.

    so sad!

  • Who Has Offended you and Stifled Your Progress?

    2 unnecessary deaths

  • Audacity of Dope

This doesnt surprise me one bit. I’ve worked as both a policeman and a firefighter stationed with EMTs. Simply put, they get burned out with their work. However; this does not in any way justify the actions of these two individuals. There is in fact a such thing as “duty to act” which basically states that if you are in a public location, and are in uniform and an emergency arises, you are bound by the terms of your oath to take whatever actions within your resources that are necessary to provide patient care.

  • Nino Brown

ha, ha, ha, ha, that s*h*i*t*s* funny. Dont be getting in between 2 n*i*g*g*a*s and they egg mcmuffin.

  • Daywalker(The Daydream!!!!)

Depending on their department’s policies, they may be right(The EMTS, I mean…) …Some departments require that they get a break every so often regardless of what is going on…I mean don’t get me wrong, I think it’s jacked up myself, but if they were on a “legal” break, then they’re right…Any immediate emergencies should be handled as 911 cases….Sad, but true….

  • Daywalker(The Daydream!!!!)

Oh, ok…I read this wrong…The FDNY EMTS were there first, and the privately owned guys showed up later….Either way, they should have helped her if they could have….SMH….

  • Angee

    So sad!! RIP!

  • Meee

For all these people who are in support of the EMTS, imagine if that were your mother, and you were screaming by her side for help only to see them walk away. How would you feel?

  • awww man….another day at work

    that’s terrible!!

  • SweetChariot

    @Nino Brown

Die of Cancer and Burn in hell.

    Good Day

  • KoolBreeze

I understand the whole break thing with a job, but when two lives could be lost, do you think taking a 10-30 minute break is more important. Would anyone reading this care for someone to take a break if they were in danger of losing their life? Honestly, it really has nothing to do with a break or an oath…it’s about doing the right thing and saving someone else if you can. To just sit there and say I can’t try to save this person or their child because I’m on break just shows they have no character and only think of themselves…

  • Honey (Keep Me Near the Cross…LOL)

When you take on the jobs such as police officer and firefighter you are never really off duty. You still have an obligation to uphold. Such as police officers…when theynare sworn in they take a vow to protect and serve off and on duty. certain jobs call for nthat and they had no excuse not to save that woman’s life.

  • Nino Brown

Whats the big deal? It ain’t like she was white or pretty.

  • Candy Cane

Regardless of what’s legally right or not. From one human to another they should have helped. They will have to deal with that decision with their maker. Weither you are a certified medic or a regular citizen with medic skills you should have helped.

I cant believe that mother and child left this world that way. And that 3yr old lil boy will never know his mom or sister.

    wow… words just cant express.

  • Leah

@ nino plz get a life

  • SMH

    @ nino brown

eat a d*ck matter fact choke on one f*ggot

RIP mama may you & your child souls rest in heaven…there’s no doubt that the people who caused this should be held responsible they should get f*kin life in prison, better yet the death penalty SMFH

  • Kia

This woman will rest in peace. I feel bad for those of you making jokes about her death and the EMT’s who refused to help her. There will be a special seat in **** for each of you and there will certainly be no peace on earth until you get there.

  • Gmen

    so sad RIP

  • WhatAWorld

This is terrible and two lives gone because of the unprofessional EMT’s.Too close to the holidays for this,I feel for the family.

  • Mmk…

Wow. “Alright. Let me finish my coffee first.” What kind of mess is that? They should have stopped what they were doing and did their jobs.

  • http://etainmentopinionsbyjan.wordpress.com etainmentopinionsbyjan

Please ignore this person. He/she/it is only trying to get a reaction.

Hey Sydney, what’s good? This story is trying very sad. I can’t believe someone, break or not, could just sit by and let something like this happen, especially knowing the woman was pregnant. All bets are off. SMH in sadness.

  • http://bossp.com MZOJUMU

IF THEY REFUSED TO HELP HER CAUSE THEY ON THEIR DAMN BREAK THEY NEED TO BE FIRED…IMMEDIATLEY…MY HEART GOES OUT TO THE FAMILY OF THIS LADY GOD BLESS THEM…I WORK IN THE HEALTCARE FIELD AND IT REALLY NEEDS TO BE LOOKED AT UNDER A MICROSCOPE BECAUSE THESE NURSES DR.’S THEY DONT CARE IF YOU DONT HAVE MONEY…THEN YOU GET NOTHING…AND IT IS SAD THAT THEY PUT A DOLLAR SIGN ON YOUR LIFE…TRUST ME I SEE IT EVERYDAY….EVEN WHERE I WORK

  • Sylmarvelous

Another sad story! I’m tired of hearing nothing but negative things going on! I would’ve helped! F*ck a break cause I honestly couldn’t just sit there knowing that someone may be dying!…I don’t know, maybe it was some legal things going on where they really was told to not do anything…It’s still stupid either way

  • Janae

That’s EVIL. I hope they feel guilty. God bless her family.

What another young woman dies…what is this world comin to…that’s why i’m livin my life to the fullest now.don’t know wen my time gonna come

  • http://yahoo Penny

The EMT workers were only protecting themselves under the law. As sad as it may sound, there was nothing they could have done at that time. If they were to help and that woman had eventualy die, her family could have sued(emts) for the clothes off their back.

  • her?yeahher

sad, vile and digusting. I knew this city was a babylon already but damn. many condolences and sympathy to the family. those EMT should be fired immediately(how are you in the business of caring for people when you don’t care about people?) anyways, regardless of their inhuman action they will have to answer to a higher authority. there is no judgement we can give them that will compare to what they will face in life or when meeting God. For everyone else, please remember we are but frail creatures on this rock called earth and we’re on it together- let’s try to act like it.

  • emtrt

Ok I am an EMT in NYC. If it was me personally, I would of tried to do something, even if I was off duty or on a break. Truth of the matter is that under the law if these guys were off the clock for lunch they have no obligation to provide patient care. The least they could do is call 911. The second they make patient contact they are legally bound to stay with that patient unless an equally or higher level trained professional comes over and tkaes over. These guys didnt have there equipment from what I have read. If the patient dies under the first EMTs chances are they might get sued. And what alot of people dont get is that while your on the clock you are protected againts lawsuits. BUUUUUT if you are off the clock you are not protected againts lawsuits. It is a slippery slope. My condolences go out to the family but this is more a tort problem in a overly litegatious society where its pretty much you trying lok out for your own back. Sad but true.

  • her?yeahher

also, i wonder if this story will be on any mainstream news programs? that would truly be a smh if it’s not.

  • Keisha

They should have helped. They are morally obligated. I mean if you have the means to help why wouldn’t you at least check to make sure things are okay. Even if you are off duty, your skills aren’t off the clock.

  • Tara (Rebel to the Madness…)

    RIP to the two individuals.

  • emtrt

Yea from a moral stand point I agree they should of helped. I have in my experience helped people after work while still in uniform. The thing is, is that if they was to try to help her and she would of died they more then likely would of been sued for some reason or another. I know someone who helped a civilian off duty and saved the guys life. But because of “injuries” substained that person was sued.

  • BeanTown

EMT’s are complete asses. They make you feel less than. I can’t understand why they are so callous I think it’s because they couldn’t get into real medical school. It’s like they become desensitized after dealing with people. Lack of empathy and health care do not blend well. Poor lady.

  • pinklady

“All of our members take an oath to assist others in need of emergency medical aid. They have a duty to act when called,” said FDNY spokesman Steve Ritea.

If he believes what he is saying then they should have been fired, fine and imprisonment. I work in this field and you are not at all allowed to ignore a plead for medical help on or off duty. They are never suppose to walk away from an emergency situation, especially when asked for help. They tell you that in the classes and in the training, as a matter of fact you have to sign something agreeing.

  • Somali Ninga

I can’t believe this!!! Eutisha and I grew up on the same block and I’ve known her twin brother for years…her death is still being felt.

To some of y’all out there. This ain’t funny!! Imagine if this was your sister, cousin, aunt, niece, goddaugther or mother. Save the insults for funny moments. This is not a funny moment. Those that are being disrespectful need to grow up…

We all must remember life is too short,to pass judgement on others, for we all we be judged one day.

  • http://tallgirl tallgirl

I would like to send my condolences to the family. Also as an Emt myself what this do did was unexcepital how can you sleep at ight. Even though they were not called to the scene they had a duty to act. At that point where is your conscious. I hope that none of their relatives need help and someone tells them no im on break. sad

  • Darkesthourgla ss

Eutisha and her baby are gonna haunt those EMTs for life. Did they really need that break that bad? Now that is some n*gga sh!t regardless of their race.
Am I the only that noticed that they didn’t mention her husband/boyfriend or the expecting father above? They just mentioned her son, mother and twin brother. This is gonna affect the child’s father’s life too or at least it should.

  • tita

God bless the family and rest in peace to this beautiful young lady. She did not have to die like that. If this story is true I pray justice gets served to the family and especialy for Eutisha Rennix and her baby girl.

  • lele5000

What the F UCK MAN WHAT THE F UCK!?

  • Be blessed Rennix family!

God bless you and your family Eudane. I’ve had the chance to meet you when my husband was stationed in KS and, what happened to your sister is BEYOND senseless!

I’m not sure why they weren’t able to save a 6-month gestation baby when mine was born at 5 and 1/2 months and is 7-years old now but, God had it in His plan.

Know that God won’t put more on you than you can bear and, He will take care of this situation in the end.

Be blessed family and, R.I.P. Eutisha and Jahniya.

  • SunSand&CoconutTrees

    God bless her family.

  • stl

if the truckers have an obligation to assit in an emergency ,let’s be real about this . the emt were supposed to help regardless of break or not. we tax payers pay they salary ‘but of course they did’nt think about that while they was wating on they’re bagels ,hummm makes you think about what type of care are they giving to many of our fellow tax payers.

  • Sydney™

    From today’s NY Daily News:

The two EMTs were placed on modified duty and are barred from providing patient care, FDNY officials said. Reports of their inaction infuriated Mayor Bloomberg.

“It was unconscionable,” said Bloomberg. “But even if they weren’t part of the Fire Department sworn to protect all of us, just normal human beings, drop your coffee and go help somebody if they’re dying. Come on.”

    ——————————————-

I cannot get past the incredible inhumanity of this story. Can people truly be this callous to one another?

    @Life is Precious

“Tisha was my cousin, and she will be missed dearly.”

I’m so, so sorry for the loss of your beautiful cousin and her child. I can only imagine the immense pain her son must feel. I hope that you are able to gain some sort of legal retribution from this completely thoughtless tragedy. This can never be allowed to occur again.

My deepest condolences to you and your family.

  • Mr. Cool

RIP. My love go out to the family. This is a bad situation because getting involved means putting one’s self at risk. What if she still dies while they are trying to help her. Will the family sue them because they followed they heart? I only hope the refused because of the libility risk and not because of a coffee break.

If they did it because of a coffee fix, my they rot in hell.

  • Victoria

After reading this story it makes me sick to my stomach how cold hearted some human beings can be. You on a break is fine but someone tells you there’s an emergency no questions asked you suppose to go above and beyond the call of duty drop anything your doing and save a life in this situation there was two lives lost a soon to be mom and her daughter. And then there going to give them paid leave they should have gave them unpaid leave upon the investigation of the incident. So is the EMT’S Dept telling me that when employees are on break and someone comes to you telling you there is an emergency they don’t have to stop what there doing and assist a civilian that is in need of medical help that supposed to be considered acceptable behavior on there part!!!! I could keep going and going but nothing more will bring back the family’s loved one(s. I hope they feel the pain that they have caused and especially before Christmas. May God Bless the family & friends of Eutisha & Baby Jahniya:-(

Get the best lawyer in town and sue the f—k out of every damn body you can — it won’t bring her back, but make sure the WORLD knows that this is the type ish that happens.

There’s no way in hell a resident of a $20 million apartment on the upper east side would have been ignored. No effin’ way. Everybody from the bullls–t mayor on down to the lowly union head would be on their knees, kissing the family’s b-u-t-t-s if she were the wife of a stock broker or investment banker.

Fired immediatly and charged with atleast manslaughter. Those POS let her die so they could eat some bagels! I hope they chocked on those bagels. How in the hell are you going to deny a distressed woman who is turning blue care? That is beyond sick. I am not even an EMT but CPR trained I would have been there in a flash to try an help and if I did nothing I couldnt sleep at night or live with myself. Grrr… I would like to beat the sh!t out of those EMTs!! Rot in hell!
To the family I am so sorry for your loss and what could have been avoided. May she rest in peace. God Bless.

@nino when I read your first comment i disliked you for your comment. I don’t like to use the word hate I don’t hate anyone. But then you came back and apoligized for your mean words and actions and explained why you did your actions. I’m not going to be like all the negative commenters who have left you negative feedback towards you instead i’m going to say may god bless you and help you become a better person and love yourself and others better. Because god loves everybody and he loves you too. Because I was an unattractive kid growing up and I’m just being truthful but I’ve never downgraded anyone because I know how it feels personally to get picked on your whole childhood. But now I’m grown with 3 boys and a wonderful husband who ive been with for 9 years and I feel more beautiful then ever. You don’t need to cause attention for yourself just because you don’t feel beautiful about yourself. The sooner you realize this the sooner you can resolve your situation and make it better God Bless Merry Christmas & Happy New Year:-)

RIP Eutisha and the princess, I went to school and associated with her over the years. It happened down the street from me and the EMTs are ALWAYS around there. Its their headquaters. I am SHOCKED at the news that she was dead, let alone now the afterword of what REALLY happened. Wake was sad. to see mommy and baby just laying there.

Omg,I feel so bad right now I work in the medical field and you can’t be in it just for the money you have to be passionate about what you do. This is such a sad story and it’s sad to think about if anything serious happens to us or our loved ones that ppl like that could be taking care of us. I feel really bad for her surviving son growing up without his mother.

While this story is disturbing, the EMTs would have just put themselves at risk by helping her. You want crap like this to stop? Fine, work for tort reform. But yelling and screaming about how the EMTs should rot in hell or whatever is missing the mark.

And for those great legal minds on this board that think they should go to jail, is there any particular law you would like to point out that they broke?

This is an older story, but something I thought worth mentioning for those like me who came upon it in a google search.

There are always two sides to every story, has anyone bothered with the EMTs? They were dispatchers! They likely didn’t know how to help!

  • Save the innocent

while this is a terrible tradgedy, and the emt’s could and should have offered help the simple truth is if they were in fact on break the more than likely just got done with a run which would have severely depleted their resources and greater care would have been provided by calling 911 dispatch to send out a fully stocked truck. Should they have helped, yes but limited care would have been given that could have caused problems for the first crew on scene.
