Why is there so much hate against Lou Jing? Last month we told you about Lou Jing, a contestant on the Chinese reality show “Let’s Go! Oriental Angels” who stirred up a national debate about race in China, now more details and a video have emerged
Details:
Born and raised in Shanghai by her Chinese single mother, Lou Jing, a half African-American half Chinese aspiring singer, experienced very little discrimination during childhood. However after she appeared on the Chinese reality television show called “Let’s Go! Oriental Angels,” Lou Jing gained national fame and notoriety — largely for her skin color.
“After the contest started, I often got more attention than the other girls. It made me feel strange,” Lou said.
The reality show hosts fondly called her “chocolate girl” and “black pearl.” The Chinese media fixated on her skin color. Netizens flooded Web sites with comments saying she “never should have been born” and telling her to “get out of China.”
“We lived in a small circle before,” said her mother. “But after Lou was seen nationwide, some Chinese people couldn’t accept her.”
Even well meaning friends and family members revealed widespread ignorance about Lou Jing’s racial difference:
“Sometimes people on the street would ask me, ‘Why do you speak Chinese so well?’ I’d just say, ‘Because I’m Chinese!’” Lou said.
“She used to wonder why she had black skin,” said one classmate. “We thought about this question together and decided to tell her it’s because she likes dark chocolate. So her skin turned darker gradually.”
Another classmate weighed in, “We said it’s because she used to drink too much soy sauce.”
Even Lou Jing’s maternal grandmother admitted in a taped interview, “I told Lou Jing she was black because her mom was not very well and had to take Chinese medicine.”
Here are some of the actual comments posted on websites about Lou Jing and her mother:
“Shanghai people’s value plunges. A bastard, brought her out to show off because of the foreigner descent.”
“Is this the legend of the bastard? And an unwanted bastard, Her mother is a shameless woman, pregnant by a black guy, and then abandoned, was it good when he was pleasing you? “This woman has no sense of shame, married and you cheat, give birth to a black kid so there is no way to hide, if wasn’t for that her husband will have to raise their children. Cheap is the word, in order to run with a foreigner, even do with black people.”

I read this on AOL earlier. It is something to me for a few reasons. I am of African- American/Chinese descent. My parents are still together. I have 4 sisters. We grew up in Japan. Military family. The Japanese are far worse than Chinese when it comes to Blacks, but we did not get teased too much when we were little, only as we aged.
The Chinese that are berating this family should stop. There were many GI’s that were in China and the had children that they left to the hookers there that had no other way of feeding themselves.
This just goes to show you that not only are African- Americans not supporting Tiger Woods neither are the Asians that he claimed BEFORE being Black.

Too bad. I feel for this girl. But, Asians aren’t too crazy about “difference”. I hope she can live a happy life in China. It seems and is quite “interesting” that some black/Asian young people have a tendency to identify with AAs, even though their living in an Asian country. I saw this when learning about the plight of half-Korean orphans who still live in Korea. Koreans don’t like ANY mixtures, but they treat the half-blacks the worst. Many of the kids I saw looked AA. But, I would have thought they lived in the US and grew up in a black area. They dressed, wore hair/makeup like AAs, and were into the popular AA artists. Although AAs have lots of problems, in some ways, I feel like their high, international, “profile” helps some colored/half-black people in other racist countries to feel better about themselves. I remember reading another article where an Indian woman (living in India) was quoted as saying, “Black is beautiful” (the LAST thing most Indians would say, even though they are the BLACKEST people on the face of the earth, just like Africans). Anyway, the racism of Asians is TOO real.

This is not surprising….If you go into any of their establishments in American they will follow you in the stores and watch you like a hawk…Even though they open many of their stores in predominantly minority neighborhoods, they hate blacks. They just want your money and want you out of their stores.

And then she told me about Black/Korean children and how the people treated them really bad years ago. Even though the tolerance is getting better, they still get it bad.

They said in Bejing for the 2008 Olympics, a lot of the business/restaurants wouldnt serve the black athletes in the Olympic Village. The stars who they knew were served, but they assumed every other black person was trying to rob the place.
It was swept under the rug and media coverage about it was glossed over it. But a lot of the athletes were complained to Olympic officals about it the racism they were encountering there.

The article I read included quotes from an interview with a white/Korean model. Her father was from Spain. She only discussed her heritage anonymously. She must have looked fully Korean. Anyway, she said she hasn’t told anyone she works with or very many of her friends that she is only HALF Korean. It’s really too bad that people can be so closed-minded about ethnic difference. On a side note, she must have been a really cute girl. I think Koreans and Japanese are the CUTEST orientals.

lol…yeah, they are. I’ve dated 2 Koreans…one was what they term F.O.B.(frash off the boat) and the other was more integrated, but not quite a “twinkie”. She was the Jap/Korean (correction: should be for her father was Japanese, mom Korean) But even then, I was TOTALLY thrown into the Korean way of life when I dated them both…and that spanned 2 years.
I have never had so much kimchi in my LIFE!! ahahah! For breakfast, lunch and dinner on some days. But it didn’t bother me. That’s the only way you break down the barriers other races have of you.
The Koreans saw me as their own over time…I learned the language good enough to talk in general convo and hung out with them so much it was like second nature.
So the barriers people face alot of times is just a lack of wanting to know what makes other cultures tick.
Once you get past that, you should be in pretty good with them.

Yes. It’s possible to establish good relations with people from other groups. One just has to have the desire, open-mindedness, patience, and “good fortune” to meet another with the same.
