We Never Thought We’d See The Day When….

Vogue featured nothing but Black women:

“For the July issue of Italian Vogue, Mr. Meisel has photographed only black models. In a reverse of the general pattern of fashion magazines, all the faces are black, and all the feature topics are related to black women in the arts and entertainment. Mr. Meisel was given roughly 100 pages for his pictures. The issue will be on European newsstands next Thursday and in the United States soon after.”

Kudos to the Vogue Italia folks for making such a bold move (this is sure to piss off more than a few of their subcribers – hah!). This display of authentic Brown Beauty is a must see. Get a glimpse of what’s to come just below.

Check out all 4 Vogue Italia covers right about now.

  • Miss. Rissa

omg what a blessing. do they sell italian vogue here?

  • Miss. Rissa

okay nevermind i read the whole paragraph but i will defenitely be pickin it up. oh and first!

  • And…..(with 5 dots)

Wow! I am impressed and SHOCKED at the same time. Now that we are about to have a Black president and First Black Family, everybody wants to jump on the Black bandwagon. I guess its better late than never. I will be coppin this joint.

  • homegirl

    Miss Rissa

If you live in a major metropolitan area, you can find it at any newsstand selling mags from around the world.

  • LdyK

Finally…lets hope they’re a represenation of all shades of black women !

I will mos def buy it when it hits U.S. stand!

    Ciao bella!

  • Miss. Rissa

thx home girl. i just realized it when i re-read it. lol

  • new2this

Wow, good for them, i am glad they are starting to open their minds up to some ethnicity! i can’t wait to see who they have up in their!

  • new2this

*wow, for me being new to this, i am actually in the top TEN! (is that good)~~

  • this one

  • ATL_CPA

    I love it… it’s well overdue

  • ma

umm why would anybody be pissed off? i really dont care what color the models are in HIGH fashion magazines. these women do not represent me anyways no matter what color

  • My son’s parole officer said it’s gonna be alright!

    Hip Hip Hooray!!!

  • mimi

Okay… I hate to put a damper on this but until Alek wek is on the cover I will be really impressed. For them to put photos of Black women looking not-so black in the magazine is not surprising. The pictures have been photoshopped to reduce the african influence of their features.

    give me a break.

Nice gesture though. BTW.. Italy has always been featuring black women everywhere. the only place I’ve been where there is a drak skinned woman on a huge billboard in the middle of the city.

    NEXT

  • Rain Maker

I can’t WAIT to purchase this issue! You know it’s going to fly off the shelves.

White women everywhere have something to fear now. Once they see just how beautiful real Black women are (not the video hoodrats purposely put in front of the camera to make our women look bad), it’s a wrap. Black women will likely be featured in more magazines and on the runway, because they’ve ALWAYS had more bolder, unique features than caucasian women anyway. It’s just that nobody wanted to give them their shine, due to racism and FEAR.

  • Miss. Rissa

@ rain maker. i agree with you 110% i guess you can say african american woman are the new “standard of beauty”

  • Negrodamus Believes

Negrodamus Believes there is not one black women in this magazine.

  • Doagae

’bout damn time! This ain’t the “Angry Black Woman” issue though is it? I’m getting really phucking tired of hearing about how angry we Black woman are…hehe :)

  • LoveMeBaby

All of the woman they are featuring are lightskinned…I don’t care either way at least blacks are finally getting some appreciation.

    YAY!!! GO AFRICANS!!!

    **especially Nigerians, wink-wink**

On the real, I am so happy that this issue is “making waves in the water”. Let’s just hope that the women in here ACTUALLY look black…none of this “Black girl with white features” -ish.

YAY!! I’m actually excited about the African representation too!!

**Big tear welling up in my big brown eyes**

    YAY!!!!

  • Negrodamus Believes

hey Miss.rissa I agree alek wek is beautiful

@missy17 relax I’m not making it a light/dark issue (that issue is tired imo) I don’t care if they are light or dark. i am glad they are at giving blacks 100 pages, thats better than the 2 or three that we usually get and is loooonng overdue

  • SPELMANITE

    this is hotness….

    i love liya kebede

sessilee lopez is hotness as well

this is great because anyone who knows anything about the fashion industry knows that this is long overdue for as many black supermodels as there is

  • Celebrity CSI

    (smirk)… lol

  • DiDi

There was a show denouncing racism toward black models. Naomi and Tyson have contributed to this. Things most not remain the same. It’s time that people recognize the contribution of Blacks throughout history. How many black inventors can you name? The black man invented the cellular, elevators and soooo many more. Educate our children and earthmates!!!

  • Negrodamus Believes

    @Afiya

I pissed in the pot once…

    ———————————

Now now black women, don’t get too excited..I don’t trust them Italians and neither should you..They put you on the front cover then go behind your back and market Italian “high blood pressure and diabetes will soon follow” Sausages down your throat.

  • Miss. Rissa

lovemebaby, so true. sometimes black models don’t even get one page at all. especially in U.S. vogue smh

  • imrightdammit

Yea, whatever. All those chicks look like white girls. They have the same weave, the same makeup, the same photoshop to make the features less african. Why not embrace BLACK beauty the way God made it???!!! How about sending the message that AFRICAN HAIR IS BEAUTIFUL and AFRICAN FEATURES ARE BEAUTIFUL, not the white hair/white features on a genetically black chick.

  • Footballerswife

It’s about damn time. Now the U.S. needs do the same.

  • TRACY

Why do people keep mentioning Alek Wek. I hate to say this and I am a dark skinned black woman. Alek Wek is not impressive. I hope she is not on the cover and not even in the magazine. I am sure she is a good person. But I do not see her as a model. Most Africans that I speak to, consider her unrespresentative of them. Very few Africans actually look like her, when you take into account the entire continent.

  • thatgirl

This is when it becomes a problem not acknowledging that being half black is biracial. In my opinion those first two women clearly are biracial, and are being presented to the masses as typical black women. While I understand that black women come in all shapes and sizes, not everyone that we are dealing with does. Those women are not indicative of most of the black women I see everyday in the streets of NYC. My issue is that they are being passed off as the average black women, which I think we can agree they aren’t. This is not just about Vogue, I realize they are models. I am seeing it everywhere. Anyway that’s my two cents lol.

  • Miss. Rissa

TRACY thats what makes Alek so beautiful to me, that she doesnt look like every model. She is gorgeous to me and takes good pictures. I guess its because i apperciate unconventional beauty.

  • Negrodamus Believes

    @thatgirl

    great point

  • missy17

Tracy I’m sorry to disappoint you but she(ALEK WEK) has a big spread it this issue

  • bootlegger

    very true Negrodamus!

  • Negrodamus Believes

Negrodamus Believes Alek Wek looks like a Siberian Saber Toothed Muskrat

  • missy17

NEGRODAMUS why do you speak about yourself in a third person and why do you have an alter ego

  • TRACY

Italians have always appreciated black female beauty. Lots of Italian men like black women and vice versa. Heck they are the only type of white men many black women would date. Historically Italians, when they came to America were not considered actually white (read “The Making of Whiteness”). They even socialized with blacks along with the black Irish. Eventually, they were made into white people for political and power purposes in America. This magazine is no surprise.

  • Hannibal

Why couldnt they have found good lookin women, all these ladies look absolutely terrible! Especially Tyra Banks anorexic ass!

  • Lena

@thatgirl “This is when it becomes a problem not acknowledging that being half black is biracial. In my opinion those first two women clearly are biracial”

The first model is Liya Kebede and she is Ethiopian, not biracial at all.

  • vb

This is a direct indication that people all over the world are celebrating black people due to Barack’s sucess. Kudos to us! But we didn’t need their acceptance, now did we….

    Rise up!

  • yo mama

all the women on the covers look as though they’ve been touched by chemicals and or scalpels.

i’m excited to see the insides, but i hope everyone isn’t washed out and deafricanised

  • Lush-Us Lipps

    Good lookin Vogue!

    @ Negrodamus – awww that wasn’t nice :(

  • Negrodamus Believes

“NEGRODAMUS why do you speak about yourself in a third person and why do you have an alter ego”

    ——————————————

speaking in 3rd person solidifies Negrodamus’s persona as being an other-worldly being.

  • INTRODUCING…ME

    @ Negrodamus…LMBAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Im sorry but I cant get excited about this. How can I when none of those women that will be featured in Vouge will even begin to capture what I would have to call the majority of black women. They will photoshop away as much of the black as they can. There are so any beautiful sistahs of every skin tone, shape and size and these rail thin air brushed interpretations wont cut it for me…sorry

  • Hmmmm

i hope the black people featured in this magazine are NATURAL not weaved, or straight hair unless born that way, if not then really the magazine or industry is praising WHITE FEATURES WITH DARKER SKIN TONES

meaning not much has changed cos blacks with white features are the one who seem to be globally accepted, and we all know that global really means white approval.

  • Sweet Paula

    Black Is Beautiful!

  • Hannibal

    All black chicks wear weave!

  • me888

oh puhleeeez! that last cover has the only model that looks black! the rest look like white chicks with tans…

and to whomever up there said that they are featuring “real black women” – get a f*cking grip! these women are not “real” anything – nor is any fashion model. they are strange anomalies and these in particular are successful because their features aren’t TOO African.

    that’s. the. truth.

kudos to you who mentioned Alek Wek up there ^

  • TRACY

    @LENA

I do not see any biracial women on the four covers at all, you must have different eyes. or maybe you are mad because, none of your “biracial” sisters are on the cover. You gotta watch out for some of these half black people, some go both sides and some are RACIST. Or maybe you are white woman causing trouble.LOL

  • SPELMANITE

    spelman in tha house!!! wooooo

  • Footballerswife

    thatgirl,

First one is Liya Kebede she’s Ethiopian (habesha’s stand up, lol), I have no idea who the second one is.

THIS IS GREAT! BLACK PEOPLE MAKE SURE YOU BUY A COPY SO THESE ADVERTISERS, DESIGNERS, AND EDITORS TAKE US SERUIOUSLY!

  • Chaka

What about me? I want to be in Vogue too! How come we overcame and nobody told me???

  • Earth Sign

    Thats wuz up!

  • Miss. Rissa

lmao @ tracy. i agree none of them are bi racial. they are just unconventional beauty. majority of black people think curves are beautiful. think that light skin is the right skin. think that a woman HAS to have a big booty. think a woman has to look like halle berry or lauren london to be beautiful. and these women are just different. yeah, they were photoshopped to death but in reality, they are not what an average black man would like.

  • I’m Just Me

KUDOS! It looks great! I cannot wait to see it.

  • tg

I’ll definitely buy one to support that move, otherwise, I don’t buy the magazine. IF you can – let us know when it comes out in the US of good ole A.

  • TRACY

Anytime people actually “acknowledge” black female beauty, people in thier minds always have to see them as whiter. Look at the comments “they look biracial” or they look white” As if black female, and beautiful , do not belong together? Please.

I just want to celebrate. A give a high five to Italian Vogue. I will buy three copies of this magazine and give it to my kids and grandkids. I have no complaints. Except for Alek Wek, lol. But thats it.

  • Negrodamus Believes

Negrodamus Believes Michelle Obama and Condi Rice would make an interesting “cage-match”…Condi would enter in her cage accompanied by her handlers, Bush and Cheney and Michelle would be elegantly dressed in a Sateen Tube Dress

  • mini me and dummy you

do you think white folks is gonna get a copy of this magazine considering it features only ” BLACK FEMALE”

well thank god for the Italians …cause black folk usally dont read vogue magazine —– dam essence should have come up with that idea….

  • SAY WORD?!

That’s great I can’t say that I’m suprised though. I traveled to Italy and they LOVE LOVE LOVE black women. We were treated like queens.

@ INTRODUCING ME – I can relate – but I think it’s a START to a good thing. There aren’t too many models Black or white – that I resemble – but I DO Love me and my body. I don’t think I’ll ever be that thin and wouldn’t want too. Tyra has a nice body w/curves.

  • Hannibal

Michelle Williams? I rather request Clay Aiken!

  • Lena

    @ TRACY

Those were not my words. It’s a quote from “thatgirl” who assumed the first girl is biracial and I simply told her she’s Ethiopian. You should READ before responding, that usually helps and LOL

  • Footballerswife

Michelle Williams? I rather request Clay Aiken!

    Damn, lol.

  • Ms Sharmaine

    Kudos to Vogue!

Our beauty is unique and it should be embraced by all. I have been to pissed by the ignorance of the media regarding Michelle. The other night CNN ran a story about Michelle and Cindy McCain. The report described Cindy as a stunning beauty. When she spoke of Michelle she did not make one referrence to her beauty. I thought WOW these MFs think they are slick.

I feel that Vogue is playing a small part in featuring these women but as a black woman we have to hold it down!

  • pl

generally, the attitude towards black people in the so-called western europe is rather different that in the u.s. so i do not think the issue will piss off many of v’s subscribers;)

    anyways, great idea.

  • hmm

i’m glad there doing this but i’m sorry they still picked models who have very white features. Looking at those girls you would think they were white if there skin wasn’t brown. I feel like we have alot of other features that make us us. So its a step up but i don’t htink completely

  • http://www.stuffflypeoplelike.com Stuff fly people Like.com

And American Voque is doing what???

  • DA TRUFF HURTZ!!!

    THIS IS PARADOXICALLY INTERESTING…

I WONDER IF WHITE PEOPLE SIT AROUND WAITING FOR THE DAY TO PRAISE “EBONY”, “ESSENCE”, “JET”, “KING”, “SISTER 2 SISTER”, “XXL”, “SOURCE”, OR ANY OF THE OTHER “BLACK” MAGAZINES FOR FEATURING ALL WHITE MODELS AND STORIES!!!

I’M SURE THEY COULD NOT CARE LESS…….

  • MDM.ORG

Wonderful, Wonderful. I hope the models represent the wide range of black beauty but either way I’m glad that black women are being openly praised for their beauty in a high fashion magazine (100 pages,Wow). This is another step in progress! Its refreshing to be adored instead of ridiculed and downgraded to the beauty of other races.

  • Lovely One

    SUCH BEAUTIES…especially Liya Kebede :-)

Thanks everyone for pointing out that the first model is Ethiopian :) .

I still stand by the spirit of my comments though and as I stated before, my comments don’t just pertain to this issue of Vogue.

  • http://none Body

Bout time somebody did it, but people that like the magazine will prove wheter this is a success or a one-time gimmick.

Sales will predict if there is ever another like this.

Liya Kebede (born January 3, 1978) is an Ethiopian model who has appeared on the cover of US Vogue twice. According to Forbes, Kebede was eleventh-highest-paid top model in 2007.

Kebede was born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

  • dqueen

    Wow look at Tyra…..

the picture is great very high fashion but is she powdered white?

  • yo

Italian Vogue has featured blacks. It’s the American one, where there are actually more black people living, that does not feature blacks.

But, this sounds like a great issue.

  • kigali Weaves R4 Trannies

    @This one,

“black models with caucasian features that a white audience will also appriciate. the first del looks like jessica simpson! but anyway… one step at a time.”

What the hell does “black models with caucasian features” mean? Maybe you need to travel more but not all black women look the way you think they are supposed to look. East Africans look different from West Africans, South Africans look different than Central Africans and they are no more or less “black” because of it. And they have been looking like that for thousands of years. So please stop it.

  • Always Classy

Can’t wait to get the mag! Of course I knew there would be some salty ds women whining. What difference does that make? BLACK is BLACK & beautiful in all shades.

  • Kigali Weaves R4 Trannies

    @mimi,

Alex Wek has already been on the cover of Cosmo in 2004; was on the cover of British Vogue in 2002; German vogue in 1999; voted 50 most beautiful people in People magazine in 1999 and was on the cover of Elle in 1997. Where you been?

  • kigali Weaves R4 Trannies

    @Rain Maker,

You black females really need to stop it. Most of the people that buy these magazines are white women. Who do you expect them to feature? This is a business the United Nations. Do you expect Essense of Ebony to have white women on the cover? No! They are speaking to their demograhic. In any event, these models are getting paid. You dont have to worry about them.

  • lanette

    i can’t wait to it comes out…..!!!

  • Marcia

Congrats to Italian Vogue for making such a bold and needed move. The fashion industry has been neglectful to include our beautiful sisters (as well as Asian, Hispanic, and other minorities) in the fashion industry. I applaud their effort and hope that the fashion industry will take notice!

As a woman from East Africa, I can tell you that black women come in all shapes and sizes. There is not one look and we should appreciate our beauty in all forms. These models are not black women with white features. That ignorance was taught by the media and should not be repeated.

  • WhatsYoursIsMine

    DiDi:

Earthmates? I LOVE THAT! I’ll have to start using that.

And FYI:Italian men will bring a sister home. Ask my step-grandparents! :P

  • ethang

I love it. Italian Vogue always pushes boundaries. It’s edgier and far more creative than the American version, which only features lame celebrities on it’s covers. It’s pretty expensive in the U.S. though. Expect to pay a good $15.00 for a copy. However, this will be a collector’s item so the price shouldn’t deter you from getting one.

  • Aalimah

Kudos to Vogue! I cannot wait to see it and hopefully it will reverse a long-standing trend. I am a little disappointed about the light/dark issue surfaced here but I guess it is typical of the response it will have once it is published. :-S

Why does it always have to be a certain something deadicated to BLACK…. Why couldn’t the issue come out and be entitled HUES we as Black are always regulated to some special issue when we should really be the norn. It will bew done and a collectors item and then they can say we have done that and that will be the end of it and the subcribers won’t be mad it’s only one issue and it goes back to LILLY WHITE.. THE THING IS TO KEEP BACK FACES IN VOUGE and DO IT IN AMERICA AND NOT ACROSS THE POND

  • Al-Anon

This isn’t about being creative or making a difference or even finally recognizing the beauty of African American women, it’s about trying to find a new way of marketing to make MONEY!!! I guess it’s a start…………. but those women are not Alek Wek black, they’re ‘in asia, only eurasian models need apply’ black.

If they did this, they did it because they figured it would sell magazines.

  • bopeep

jourdan dunn is from london i think.

sessilee lopez is of african descent from both portugal and the dominican republic.

Naomi campbell is british but with jamaican, chinese ancestry.

Chanel Iman is 3/4 black, 1/4 korean

arlenis pena is dominican of mixed mostly african descent.

liya kibede is 100% african from ethiopia.

All africans do not have “African” stereotypical features. Hello Iman 100% african from somalia.

There is facial feature diversity in black africa. The fact is though that generally european and even other african folks prefer the african beauty of women like liya kibide and Iman which is facially similar to europeans. If anything, me thinks black americans have to accept themselves first – you guys are more discriminatory between yourselves than any other group I know. When you accept yourselves as beautiful you wont care what others think of you. Amazingly enough.

  • bopeep

lastly – high fashion modeling requires good bone structure which photographs well – these ladies have the requisite bone structure: wide set eyes, high, pronounced cheek bones (like razors), centered lips and noses, clean toned skin, and of course tall and skinny…its not a european thing its an all across culture/high fashion model thing. You will find the same features in all other successful models of any racial background.

  • Its6amHoGetOut

See as Ive always said, If youre black, fine, slim/regular size without a sh*tty attitude then the world is your oyster!

Even Italian n*ggas know slim/regular size black women are the salt of the earth, youre the blood that rushes thru my veins, youre the air I breathe, I like most progressive black men will honor you, we’ll protect you, we’ll provide for you and our seeds.

Now as for you sh*t talkin’ ghetto, fat multiple babymomma b*tches, with f*cked up weaves to match your f*cked up names? We aint doing sh*t for you except step over you to get to finer b*tches!

Why dont you concentrate on those issues you and i talked about, yanno the ones where you admitted to being molested by your stepfather, your inability to protect your lil sister from even worse abuse and your inability to get a job or move out of that trailer, those are the more pressing issues in your life. Being in your 40′s unemployed, white and extremely bitter are no way to go through life pasty!

You are incredibly stupid and obviously non African. I am Southern African of Xishangaan peoples and if you know anything abt Africa know this : Somali peoples are MIXED BLOOD with Arabs and before that some of the Madagascans. In addition if you travel to SHashamane ( in ETHIOPIA) for example you will see the TRUE ETHIOPIANS with 100% AFRICAN blood (not the mongrel descendants of ARAB invaders and Italian settlers ) who look like a Sitstwana or Xhosa or Shona etc. I cant stand insipid assinine pseudo Black Americans who spout their ignorance every nanosecond…please desist beauty you havent a CLUE what you are talking abt

P.S italian pple dont like African folks

    portugeuse dont like African

    spaniards dont like African folks

@ Its6amhogetout I do know that most italians dont like blacks. have u ever watched the old gangster movie the godfather there are a couple of racial slurs about blacks in the movie and one of spike lee joints there is a scene where italians and blacks get into it. so it has been noted somewhere doen the lines that at a point in time blacks and italians didnt get along.

  • kigali Weaves R4 Trannies

    @6amHo,

    Your mother must love you.

  • kigali Weaves R4 Trannies

    @handful24,

There is a big difference between old Italian patriachs not liking black folks and Italian women wanted to have sex with a black man. In any event you dont have to look that far into history for examples. Black soccer players who play in Europe are jeered at all the time by Italians, Spaniards, etc.

  • Its6amHoGetOut

@ kigali, most women love me period because i always type the truth, the worse thing you can do is tell a fat b*tch she looks good in tight sh*t, its better that she gets the truth from me before she steps out the door and gets 10 miles from her house and other people tell her, dont you think?

Its better for me to tell an ugly b*tch that her blonde weave looks stupid before she goes on that job interveiw, the HR dept is gonna laugh their asses off before they throw away her application.

Its better for me to tell a b*tch with a ghetto ass name to change it before she even fills out that job application, and to change her kids ghetto ass names before its too late.

Its also better for me to tell fat hoes to keep their massive legs closed before giving that homeless or fresh outta jail n*gga the coochie, if i dont he’s just gonna f*ck her, get her pregnant eat and drink everything in her house then bounce back to the pen.

As you can see im needed by the black race!, Sh*t im the anti-Al Sharpton! I try and styop the sh*t before it happens!

  • Its6amHoGetOut

They are jeered by the men, but not one of them has a black girlfriend, all caucasian europeans.

  • TIRAY

    What?

BLACKS HAVE BEEN RULING THE FASHION WORLD SINCE JOSEPHINE BAKER BURNED PARIS!

You guys need to get on a plane, and leave your cubicles! There’s a big world outside of America,And lots of times ,we are the stars!

With the exception of Dries Van Noten–BLACKS HAVE ALWAYS HAD EITHER THE FIRST OR SECOND SPOT ON THE RUNWAYS OR PHOTOSHOOOTS!

  • http://natashassecret.blogspot.com Malaika

    Its 6am Ho Getout:

What do you look like? You must be really fit with glowing brown skin, no blemishes and model features. Right? And your real name must be really European sounding right? A “good name” right? Like, Steven…no William Johnson or Andrew Henry or Carlton Banks.

Your distaste for unattractive, overweight, poor, uneducated, disempowered black women is astounding. So I’m assuming you have all these qualities.

  • cat4everrr

it’s a miracle, but i’ma need a clarification, are they really brown or whiteish look’n?

  • TIRAY

    MALAIKA

    Exactly!

Blacks secretly want the approval of the white race. (sitting/waiting,for the negative reponses….)

\I’ll go as far as to say:

MANY BLACKS SECRETLY WANT TO BE…..white! LOOK AT THE WORD—bi-racial. ( the new buzz word for those who hate their blackness)—(watch the excuses for the word…..)

I do agree with you, that WE AS BLACKS DON’T NEED APPROVAL OF ANYONE ELSE…

I.E.— when you take reponsibility for your own destiny….other’s will respect you and follow suit!

    think

  • http://natashassecret.blogspot.com Malaika

    Tiray:

Josephine Baker was viewed as exotic entertainment. She was often exploited and still experienced discrimination. Black American entertainers fled to Europe because the racism wasn’t AS BAD as America. But the WHITE SUPERIORITY COMPLEX had been embedded in Europeans brains as well. Hence the rise to power of– Adolf Hitler and his Nazis. And Europeans didn’t live with large populations of black people on a regular basis.

I would hardly say Blacks have been ruling the fashion world simply because a few black people were ALLOWED in as entertainers/models/OBJECTS TO BE GAWKED AT.

  • Kimberly Arizona/Chicago

    @rachel

    Keep providing those facts!

  • rachel still sweet 25th/2008

I never said we need to be jumping up and down saying oh massa thank ya sir for giving us a 12 page fashions spread.

No, but there are plenty of little black girsl out there no matter her complexion who DOES look at major magazines/or high end fashion shows designers and unfortunatly most of them are white…and when these young girls look and dont see ANY images of themselves, it does effect thier self esteem when your a young girl appearence is part of your self worth as you go through your identity crisis , therefore it is crucial for them to see that they to are portrayed as beautiful and editorial.

Yes to some degree its all superficial ; but self esteem and self image are shaped within these years and if a young black girl constantly see the image of beauty and PRAISE only comes in a white skin with blonde hair blue eyes…she carries that lack in many different circles including who she dates, her confidence in obtaining employment, relationships with peers and etc…these children are our future..so until we have as many MAJOR black magz and fashion houses as white ones…well, cant beat um join um,…until you change the players of the game!!!

BUT DAMN FIRST STEP IS GETTIN IN THE GAME!

  • rachel still sweet 25th/2008

the above is in response to Malakia comment to me.

  • daniel

is this for only one issue.

  • Tamia

bottom line. this is a start. but lets face it, a black girl with no high cheek bones and is not rail thin is not going to get in the high fashion industry. it’s a fact for all models.

i do believe though, this this is not an adequate look at black women, but instead its black girls mixed with a bunch of other stuff.

  • chocs n berries

Hello could someone send me the vogue… or can i subscribe it…..

  • Gina

We must all rush out to buy a copy of this magazine, even if we have to order it from the publisher and have it shipped! We as black women have tremendous spending power and we need to spend it supporting our sistas! They say black women on a cover doesn’t sell magazines – well, let’s show them that’s a lie and start changing things!

  • claroliza

i think this is wonderful. so many of you are missing the point. this Vogue issue is an opportunity for the world to see black female beauty at its finest.

from the models mentioned above it seems they’ve done a good job of picking women from all over the world with a variety of features, complexions and styles. but as always, some of you will find a way to hang on to your inferiority complex.

also, thank you to all the African posters standing up about the “they don’t have african features” comments against the models featured. so many of you really need to leave the ghetto and go to a public library, open a book and realize Africans are so

diverse in their features, cultures and traditions.

it’s obvious you are all still thinking all africans look like the ones from the movie kunta kinte.

I went to school in the d.c. area and was lucky to befriended a lot of africans. if i weren’t caribbean, I would love to be ethiopian. i love african culture.

  • Hannibal

Why did vogue pick these nappy headed hoes?!

  • claroliza

wow “keeping it real”… you do keep it real. LMAO. I must admit you did make a lot of valid points.

I have African friends who cannot stand how African-Americans claim Africa as the motherland, try to dres in African garb and call Africans their brothers/sisters. Most of the Africans i’ve encountered distance themselves from African-Americans and are embarrased to be connected to them. They either stick with other Africans, Caucasians or immigrants.

  • Terry

The timing couldn’t be better. Since Obama is almost a shoe in as Prez. Vogue probably decided that an all black issue would sell lots of copies. That makes good FINANCIAL since on their part, if my theory is correct.

Oh, and I wouldn’t want to read the hate filled emails from white subscribers to the editors. Eww! You would most definitely be able to cut the vitriol with a stake knife!

  • k

Yea, whatever. All those chicks look like white girls. They have the same weave, the same makeup, the same photoshop to make the features less african. Why not embrace BLACK beauty the way God made it???!!! How about sending the message that AFRICAN HAIR IS BEAUTIFUL and AFRICAN FEATURES ARE BEAUTIFUL, not the white hair/white features on a genetically black chick.

stop whiney those are black women! thats how i look and im all black just like that. white women dont look nothing like that and never can they are ugly black women dont even look the same thats whats so good about black women why? im sick of telling you dumb asses this.

eve was a black woman adam was a ? maybe he was white ir eally dont know. but i know black women are the mother of every race and that is why every one is jealous open your big pretty eyes and see it. all white men even white women will tell you off line they come from a black woman (eve) this is something no one cant lie about any more. own up to it black women all skin tones own up to it.

  • blackwoman

and today i heard about in Africa the Asians that live in Africa can now call them selfs black and African……now i don’t know how that happen but the black African man and Asian man shake hands and today now the Asians that live in Africa can check that they black they don’t even have to say they Asian.

i notice most Asians love the race black people this is why asian men are rapping and danceing and u know what they doing a damn good job at it.

Asian people come up with a perm to make nappy hair Asians wear nappy hair because they say black hair is beautiful they think black women hair is beauty so they can make they hair turn nappy now no lie.

why do you think they find out a way to make weave for black women? they cater to black women. i dont wear weave but im please to say they do this for black women to honer them. and people are jealous of black women. :) now be jealous of this vogue!

  • Run Away Love

I’m sorry, but how on earth is this “all black issue” a good thing???

One step forward……………. TWO STEPS BACKWARDS…..

So, Vogue decided to do an all black issue, but guess what….in the next months issue you’re still going to be able to count the number of ethnic models with two hands, maybe even one….just like ALL the previous issues.

This issue is nothing more than a marketing scheme and a way to get everyone to shut up about the lack of color in the industry!

The people at Vogue knew that black people around the world would be rushing to the stores to pick up this issue and that = $$$$$$$$$$$

It’s 2008, I won’t be purchasing any Vogue magazine until I see people of ALL color in their editorials……………. on a regular basis.

With that being said……..Where is Emanuela De Paula?? Now, that’s a ridiculously beautiful model!

I think the Italian Vogue issue is a nice concept. A step forward, IMO! Reminds of the Vanity Fair series last summer focused on Africa.

There still needs to be more change in the fashion industry. More black designers, models, etc need to be included and given an opportunity. But change does not come in a day. We should take the Italian Vogue issue for what it is, a brick in the wall and be positive about it. I am proud to see my black sisters from all over the world featured in the magazine.

Also, people need to rise above what is considered “black”. Does blackness entail natural hair and dark skin? Yes, but it also includes all kinds of skin tones and hair textures. As an East African (Kenyan), I know that there is a lot of diversity in Africa in terms of that. We have the Alek Weks, the Liyas, the Imans, the Aumas, the Oluchis, etc. And EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN. For someone to say that Ethis (Ethiopians) and Somalis don’t have NEGROID blood is truly ignorant. THEY ARE BLACK! Africa has all races (yes, WHITE too!!!).

Educate yourself on the motherland. Love to appreciate our blackness (whether full, biracial, quarter, etc).

    Peace!

If anything your INSULTING THOSE BLACK WOMENS BEAUTY EVERYTIME YOU SAY THEY LOOK WHITE WHEN I’M CLEARLY LOOKING AT A BEAUTIFUL BLACK WOMAN.

Black people don’t all have stong stereotypical African features especially here..How many black American women you know look like alek wek? so appreciate your women here..I HOPE YOU GET WHAT I’M SAYING…

The only reason they are doing this is so that when (or if) this issue doesn’t sell well they can go back to excluding black models on the basis that the mag doesn’t sell with black models on the cover.

Who the f@ck they think they’re fooling?!

  • chocs n berries

my God black people have sooooooooo many insecurities growing up in Africa i always considered black women including moi to be gorgeous with our nappy hair, coming abroad i was made to feel ugly by these shyte white pple who are gonna put these models on their cover this is all nonsense we very well know white will never accept black pple in any shape or form who are we kidding, go buy your goddamn vogue mag but it will help change nothing, black pple will always be slaves and ugly according to a white thats the bottomline mes amis

  • http://gigi@yahoo.com I know that for sure

In my opinion those first two women clearly are biracial, and are being presented to the masses as typical black women.

    @that Girl

Liya (the first model)is an African and is very proud of being one. She is not biracial at all.

July’s Vogue has an article titled something like “Is Fashion Racist?” It has quotes from Bethanne Hardison and Iman as well as comments from 3 black models. I am going to purchase Vogue Italia to see all these beautiful women, but I think, just like the weight issue a little while ago, I think this sudden focus on the lack of color (be it black or other non-whites) is just the latest hot topic. Vogue will put out these obligatory issues and before next season rolls around, the issues will be forgotten. I follow fashion religiously and as I watched the last few seasons’ runway shows, there was a serious lack of color. Although I can’t stand P-Diddy, Puff Daddy, Piff Puffy (whatever his name is this week) , I was so proud that he showed 99 percent black males in his runway shows a season back. I hate that black models are never on the covers of the really major high fashion magazines and if they are, they have to share with someone white. How can you say we don’t sell magazines if featured on the cover, when we almost never get one. Another theory is that black models tend to overpower the clothes and that they need for models to be generic. The model should sell the clothes, not the other way around.

@ skinny, nita and Tk and anyoen else who responded to me.

Lets be abit grown up. Yes we have black people who look asif they have white features, but they are not typical of the majoity. It may seem so because they are the only part of the black community that is represented. But the majority or “typical” BLACK features are such as a wider nose, fuller lips and just stronger features. We know this to be true. However, media tells us this is not beautiful so we see models such as naomi and tyra who have WHITE features. This vouge magazine is nothing special at all. They are only featuring women who would look 100% white if their skin was changed. White looking asian women are also th same. Think about it.

  • Lisa

Of all ethnic groups, American Black people complain the most. You guys are NEVER satisfied. Had it been Alek Wek, Blacks would then complain that she’s too dark and doesn’t represent them.

This is a European magazine featuring Black women from around the world. It’s not targeted for the African American female. The ladies on the cover are not groomed to look like “White chicks”. These ladies are dressed in designer wear, which is what this magazine represents. Therefore, you won’t find the House of Dereon or Baby Phat clothing/styling here that you ladies find desirable.

    all black chick wear weaves….

you’re an idiot with that one buddy.

I think that people need to realize that not every black person feels the same when looking at “typical images of blacks”.The point that I and some other posters are making is that alot of times images are not representative of EVERYONE or evena good amount of “blacks” (worldwide). I’m not quite sure why that is such a difficult idea to understand, above a poster listed the racial backgrounds of a few of the models, who are mostly biracial in some way. What I am saying is that people should let everyone voice their opinion without this idea that people are “hating, jealous, mad, not satisified with anything”. That being said from my background and the time that I have spent on this site and others like; I do NOT believe that there is a viable “black community” there are Black American’s, Carribeans, African’s, immigrants etc. All we can do is try and understand each other’s experieneces and where we come from with the excessive negativity and profanity.Yeah that’s my other two cents :)

    Happy Friday

  • bree is an OBAMA supporter.. YES WE CAN!

Tyra does not look nice in that picture..she looks like a cone head

This isn’t just a Hot Topic, it’s a recurring topic in fashion because it remains a problem.

How do you live in a ever-browning population and not have these faces reflected in fashion. Especially an industry that constantly takes it inspiration from the people of color on the street!

Black women spend over 20 billion dollars on clothes last year….how do you have shows & catwalks without ANY black women on them!

I applaud Vogue for choosing Steve Meisel as photographer since he has always used and supported black models.

And I would encourage black woment to go to Barnes & Nobles and pick this issue up to make a point. Money talks and we got it!

  • ***AFRICA IS DIVERSE***

Liya, the first model, beneath the Tyra pic is not biracial!

SHE IS AFRICAN. 100% African that is. She is MORE AFRICAN that the bulk of African Americans as most AA have varying percentages of European blood running through their veins!

SHE IS ETHIOPIAN! Her facial features are common EAST AFRICAN features! East Africans did not get their genetic makeup from Europeans!

Europeans got their genetic makeup from East Africans! Africa is the birthplace of humanity!!! Ethiopia is likely the OLDEST civilization in the WORLD! Google it! East Africans don’t look like West Africans! Africa is very diverse! All Africans do not look the same!!

  • yo mama

yay darkies!!! hopefully the diverse display of beautiful chocolate in this issue of vogue will encourage dark-skinned women, young and old, on the Continent and in the Caribbean, to stop using that god-forsaken skin bleaching cream. GO DARKIES!!!!!!!

Oh, sure, that’s fine for Steven Meisel. He doesn’t have to live with us.

Interestingly enough, the rising numbers of nonwhite immigrants in Italy has boosted the popularity of Italy’s fascist parties to levels not seen since the thirties. Um, popular among Italians, I mean. Not among immigrants.

This cover may just be the last straw. Look for Africans to run out of Italy in droves.

  • Just a Thought

Hello, there are many different types of black, here in the US as well as globally. An Ethiopian does not look like Nigeria does not look like someone from the Ivory Coast. We have to embrace those who are 100% black with naturally thin facial features and longer, wavy/straight hair just as much as we do someone with more rounded facial features and short, tightly curled hair. I’m all black, and half of the people who know me would swear that I’m mixed with something, somewhere in the family tree. The beauty of being black is that is comes in all shades, and in all packages. I am just glad that they are featuring black models, even if some of them do have Euro features. Not one booking agent who skipped over these girls when hiring models for the runway or fashion shoots said, “She may be black, but her features are more Euro, so that cancels her blackness.” Nope, they took one look at their skin and gave a big resounding “No thanks, sista.”

imrightdamit, NONE of those models are African-Americans. The first cover model featured is Ethiopian model Liya Kebede. She is the first non-white model to score a cosmetic contract with Estee lauder and according to Forbes, she’s the HIGHEST paid black model in the industry. She does not have so-called Caucasian features.Ethiopian people do NOT look white.

Many people are right about the “caucasian-looking” blacks who are preferred by the media, but Liya is not all light-skinned either. Look her up on the Internet. There is a diverse range of features for blacks in Africa. The fashionn indutry, sopecifically, prefers dark-kinned “exotic” black models, usually from Africa. I don’t care for Alek Wek…she’s not attractive and NOT because she’s dark-skinned; she’s just not. Even so, she’s featured in the mag.

Futhermore, where the heck is Chanel Iman? She’s the second most successful black(part Korean) model behind Liya Kebede. Both Chanel and Liya were on covers of American Vogue within the last 4 years.

But, this is Italian Vogue; they are better accepting of blacks than America. As long as Anna “the Devil wears Prada” Wintour is editor-in-chief, one will never see models on the cover, unless it’s butt-ugly Germanic-Brazilian model Gisele or equally ugly Russian model Natalia.

    @Its6amHoGetOut

    Im glad you asked;

    Im 6′4

    209lbs

    never had acne,

about the same shade as tyra banks

    F*ckin’ beautiful

I have a normal sounding american name

And i dont hate fat hoes, i hate sh*t talkin’ do nothing, multiple babymomma fat hoes who keep making the same mistake (getting pregnant) over and over again.

    ————————————————

Wow, congratulations. I thought as much. just curious, When you say “normal sounding american name” what exactly does that mean? I just want to clarify. Normal as in anglo-saxon? As in–a name descended from the BRITISH? Like a slave master’s name? Or…just wondering.

Also…I’m assuming that these, “sh*t talkin’ do nothing, multiple babymomma fat hoes who keep making the same mistake (getting pregnant) over and over again.” did something PERSONALLY to you that makes you hate them so much. Why else would you “hate” a group of people who are clearly the least empowered, least influential, most susceptible to poverty and the (insidious) institutions of sexism and racism, members of our society? Right?

  • Fabgal

Hmmm so it take Italian Vogue to come out with this much needed issue…why not American Vogue? Just askin’ ….

  • mwanaVevhu

Liya Kebede is an Ethiopian whose ancestry is mixed with ARAB blood ergo she is of mixed race. Original true Ethiopians do come in all shades but this new found theory of Ethiopians being non-Bantu is ridiculous. The only ones are the Khoi-San of(botswana, south africa, lesotho) those people can say they aren’t Bantu folk. Amharic is not an indigenous African language. The original Ethiopians still exist today and the are no different from the Southern Africans around them in their diversity and features. Not all Ethiopians were mixed with Arab invaders or Italians.

  • olen

This issue is only possible because of racism, objectification, exoticization, of the black female. It’s not progressive, it’s totally regressive.

The African woman remains the exotic mystery. Will they they have a Latina Issue? probably not, because it’s not as fashionable and Latinas aren’t as objectifiable as Africans are.

  • Truth Hurts

    @ mwanaVehu

    you speak the truth!!!

  • LaBori

I don’t see what you are celebrating? What is the point of having all-black models if they are going to use makeup and lighting that makes them look white???? A step in the right direction of recognizing black beauty would use dark-skinned models with natural hair that actually look black.

  • spliff

    Ladies,

ALL MEN find black women attractive, problem is historically we have been shoved to the bottom of the social ladder (i.e. they’ll f*** us, but won’t marry us)But if the man has balls, he will parade us as the QUEEN, and if black women (overall) develop more CONFIDENCE and KNOW we are the sh** we can have ANY MAN WE WANT–TRUST THAT BABY!!!

  • Its6amHoGetOut

    @ Malaika,

They may be less empowered but we all pay the price of their offspring, the black community does not need another unwanted, unsupervised, undernourished child whose mother cant teach him right from wrong because she has other younger kids she has to worry about. On more than one occasion on my trips to the mainland Ive seen out of control kids and parents who just didnt give a f*ck, ive seen a mother call her child by this “c’mere lil n*gga” while other black parents looked in horror, Ive also been to clubs and was approached by single mothers who would talk to me for 20 minutes then finally say “we should hang out sometimes if I can get my mother to watch my kids”

So its not a case of me bashing single poor multiple babymommas, its a case of me being so raw with them that they finally open their eyes.

    Love 6am

  • Its6amHoGetOut

lets take a vote, if everyone thinks Im too harsh on multiple hood babymommas i’ll stop. If you just think Im too raw maybe I’ll tone it down a bit and still try and get the same message across.

  • Steph

Just for the record Liya is not mixed she is ethiopian(African) and the second girl is of African descent as well. Yes, there are 100% black women who are beautiful, they are not mixed. All the white and mixed women stop hating. Just as you feared we are more beautiful than you and can take your man!!
