After the death of 3-year-old Kyrah Martin, who fell off a roof to her death right before Christmas, the child’s mother Nefertiti had her three other young children taken away by child-welfare authorities.

“This is Christmas Day. My daughter doesn’t have any of her kids,” said Nadine Martin, the children’s grandmother.

“It’s bad enough she lost one child. They are holding onto the rest of the children. She’s hurting in so many ways. It’s Christmas, and the children aren’t even with their parents.”

The mom, Nefertiti Martin, had tucked little Kyrah into bed at 1 a.m. The child then got up, walked out of the apartment on Park Place in Crown Heights and pushed open a door leading to the roof. Authorities said the roof door triggered an alarm but no one heard it.

Officials at the Administration for Children’s Services did not say why the agency took the other kids, ages 7, 6 and 2, noting, “We’re in the middle of an investigation.”

SMH. We feel bad for the family of Kyrah Martin, but parents PLEASE keep an eye on your children!!!!

  • Somali Ninga

how come the mother tucked her daughter in @ 1 am in the night!?!?!?!!?

  • Samantha Jones

My question is how did the 3 year old get out of the apartment? Was the door not locked? What about the dead bolt and or security latch that is usually too high for a child to reach? Sounds fishy to me!

  • WhoDat

Dear God just welcome her home where she’s safe forever more!!!

Yeah, I agree. People would be surprised at what kids can do, and you can’t keep an eye on them 24/7/365, so what do you do?

I feel so sorry for this beautiful little baby. So sad.

  • noladebby

There is probably more to this story then in the article.

  • Janae

This is a SAD story! And, JUST before the holidays. I hope she’s not an irresponsible mother. But, if she is, the kids need to be placed in a more secure environment. My heart and prayers go out to their family.

I don’t see mention of a husband . . . I wonder how many different fathers this woman has for these children. Black females are more likely to have a baby than graduate from high school!

  • Sylmarvelous

    ~Ooops!~ (Couldn’t)

  • shawnna

Don’t let me start judging but you have 4 childern 7,6 3,2 why are you sleeping so soundley?

  • jena4rmthablock

THe little girl was probably looking for Santa. If they were a white family it would be a terrible tragedy, but because they are black there is an issue…SMDH

  • Shellfish789

Absolutely, quick to take away Black kids from their Mother……

  • Tracey

Look at the parents (white) of Madeline McCann from Britain, Left children alone in apartment while they went to dinner outside, daughter was kidnapped missing since, god forbid maybe even dead….and she got on the Oprah Winfrey show, no one took the rest of their children away for real child neglect.

One rule for one and one rule for the others.

  • TheOneAndOnly

How do you keep an eye on your children if you put them to sleep and you go to bed yourself??? WHat are you supposed to do sleep with one eye open??? umm doubt it. This was something that was “unstoppable” by the parent! The only way this could’ve been prevented was if the roof door that she opened had a secure child proof lock.

Sad story. God bless the family during this trying time.

wtf why would u put a young child 2 bed @ 1 am

I am a CPS worker and do not know the full details like anyone else. Workers responding must have found some other danger in the home… this mother could have had a CPS history or other circumstances going on. Hopefully the children were placed with relatives if not something came up to question their capacities as caregivers. I may not understand the situation but I would rather err on the side of caution when it comes to child safety regardless of the race of the child. Unfortunately so many people of color come into contact with social agencies because they teeter on poverty and come in contact with other agencies who call in reports. As a black female all I can do is what is right for each family on an individual basis. May God look over this family and I pray they get whatever help they need so this will never happen again

  • reesee

Hmm, children 7,6,3, and 2. Maybe this stupid hoe should stop having children. Clearly, she can’t manage one let alone four. Child Protective Services did the right thing in taking them until an investigation can be performed. The problem is, CPS will probably return the children to her, and these little bastards will be having welfare babies of their own and committing felonies years from now.
I did’nt see any mention about a father. So I’m guessing there isnt one.

  • TwoFools

this mother and grandmother can play victim but they are both fools. CPS will try the most to NOT take kids from a home and then place them in foster cares or whatever. Obviously something was up with the mother or somethings became uncovered after further investigating with the other kids. So boohoo she doesnt have her kids on Christmas, they were well taken care of somewhere else.

  • Red

Let a child die, don’t take the other children, let something happen to another one and everybody will blame the State. It’s tragic, but during the investigation they must remove the other children. Nothing says she can’t have supervised visits but the procedure is common. Look at the situation… 4 children, no father present, placed in an apartment (signifying prior homelessness), put children to bed at 1am, slept through the incident including the roof alarm while living on the top floor. A social worker must assess the risk and first and foremost is the safety of the other children. Tragedy…

  • MisNes

Rest in Peace lil angel. Mistakes happen with tragic results. If the mother had no intention then it is a tragic accident and her other children should be home. The loss of her baby is the most severe punishment for a hopefully learned lesson.

  • tg

It just seems crazy that a child would go up to the ROOF instead of down.

  • STFU!!!

Obviously there are some ignorant asses on here. For one, it has nothing to do with baby fathers. A father cudda been there and it cudda happened (men sleep even harder) The mother may have woken the child up to use the bathroom, don’t jump to conclusions.. Maybe the child just couldn’t sleep. My son used to wake up in the middle of the night to come sleep in our bed (da same room) and I didn’t even hear him sometimes. People don’t even hear smoke alarms go off (do da research!!) Anyway, to prevent this.. THE OWNER of the bldg shudda had the lock up high, so no kids can reach or easily open!! She shud sue them for that too!!
