In case folks here just aren’t doing the homework, racism isn’t bad when it’s directed at black people; it’s bad when it’s directed at anyone, whatever the source. It worries me to think that there the civil rights movement was mounted by a handful of good people at the head of a race of frauds. (Incidentally, in my opinion, the CRM was our best hour and our last moment of universal greatness; we’re turning our grandparents’ beautiful revolution into a bad episode of “Martin” bit by bit every day.)
I would think black Americans would be the first to condemn ugly racial slurs against anyone. But how often are we the first to spew them? We’re curiously and damningly blind to our own bigotry. This is one of the factors weakening support for us outside our community: we come off like phonies running a racket on well-meaning white people. I’m not sorry to see that con come to an end. If nothing else, the old unreconstructed hostility might force us to be a people with real character again. I doubt it, but maybe we might work as hard on our own failings as we’re quick to fault others for doing to us what we do to everyone else.
