Gay rights activists across the globe are raising questions about how three American evangelicals may have inspired a radical new bill under consideration in Uganda that would sentence gays to be hanged.
Last March, three American evangelical Christians, whose teachings about “curing” homosexuals have been widely discredited in the United States, arrived here in Uganda’s capital to give a series of talks.
The theme of the event, according to Stephen Langa, its Ugandan organizer, was “the gay agenda — that whole hidden and dark agenda” — and the threat homosexuals posed to Bible-based values and the traditional African family.
For three days, according to participants and audio recordings, thousands of Ugandans, including police officers, teachers and national politicians, listened raptly to the Americans, who were presented as experts on homosexuality. The visitors discussed how to make gay people straight, how gay men often sodomized teenage boys and how “the gay movement is an evil institution” whose goal is “to defeat the marriage-based society and replace it with a culture of sexual promiscuity.”
Now the three Americans are finding themselves on the defensive, saying they had no intention of helping stoke the kind of anger that could lead to what came next: a bill to impose a death sentence for homosexual behavior.
One month after the conference, a previously unknown Ugandan politician, who boasts of having evangelical friends in the American government, introduced the Anti-Homosexuality Bill of 2009, which threatens to hang homosexuals, and, as a result, has put Uganda on a collision course with Western nations.
Donor countries, including the United States, are demanding that Uganda’s government drop the proposed law, saying it violates human rights, though Uganda’s minister of ethics and integrity (who previously tried to ban miniskirts) recently said, “Homosexuals can forget about human rights.”
The Ugandan government, facing the prospect of losing millions in foreign aid, is now indicating that it will back down, slightly, and change the death penalty provision to life in prison for some homosexuals.
“What these people have done is set the fire they can’t quench,” said the Rev. Kapya Kaoma, a Zambian who went undercover for six months to chronicle the relationship between the African anti-homosexual movement and American evangelicals.
Mr. Kaoma was at the conference and said that the three Americans “underestimated the homophobia in Uganda” and “what it means to Africans when you speak about a certain group trying to destroy their children and their families.”
“When you speak like that,” he said, “Africans will fight to the death.”
If put into effect, the bill wouldn’t be the first of it’s kind. Muslim countries like Iran and Yemen already have the death penalty for homosexuals and in northern Nigeria gay men can face death by stoning, but human rights advocates in Uganda believe the visit by the three Americans made conditions in Uganda (where gay Ugandans were already subject to beatings, blackmail, death threats, constant harassment and “correctional” rape) even worse.

Re 1/4/10, 10:29:AM
I read about this earlier, good job for posting it in a TIMELY manner!
I don’t have much to say on this but as an African myself…these people CLEARLY don’t have any idea just how homophobic Africans are.
Re 1/4/10, 10:30:AM
Correction: They don’t understand how homophobic Africans CAN BE.
Re 1/4/10, 10:33:AM
They do have the death penalties for this in Yemen…nothing new.

Gays can take a d1ck in the a55, but they can’t take legislation.
How you gonna be a proponent of acceptance, but can’t accept that people don’t want to accept faggotry.
This is NOT mainstream. Values are mainstream. Families are mainstream. Butts don’t make babies. Get it right. Who you sleep with is nobodies business. EQUAL rights, means you have the right to get disrespected like everyone else.

Man, I don’t even know what to say about this one! I mean, I don’t agree with what ‘g@y people do’, but I don’t think you should just go around hangin’ people! That’s crazy! Now if they were going around spreading incurable diseases then I feel something should happen like life in prison etc…I think a LONG discussion will be coming up soon about this one! LOL
Dajournalist 1/4/10, 10:37:AM
And stop using that word HOMOPHOBIC. You don’t have to be AFRAID of gays to realize you don’t want your a55 penetrated by a grown hairy a55 man.
U can’t demonize and label straight people because they choose not to be gay. GTFOH. Maybe yall gay a55es is HETEROPHOBIC. (See how ridiculous that sounds) Aight then.
Caramel Cat™ 1/4/10, 10:37:AM
This all goes back to the false notion that homosexuality is paralleled with pedophilia. There are many people that think homosexuals are sexual deviants and that they are more likely to rape and/or molest children. It’s not the same. There are plenty of pedophiles that like the opposite sex. Pedophilia is something entirely different that isn’t necessarily related to sex but more closely related to power and other psychological issues. I don’t really know what to say about this, it’s very unfortunate, but most of the time these people have their minds made up that homosexuals are evil.

Well I say lets start loading the planes up and sending them on a non-stop flight straight to Uganda.
nywoman23 1/4/10, 10:47:AM
yes homosexuality is wrong i disagree with it. but so are alot of other things. this is no ones business what a person wants to do with the same sex. let god deal with that. who the hell are human beings to decide to take someone else life because of their preference. yet i bet these are the same human beings that are probably engaging in the same type of lifestyles themselves, or worse probably sex offenders etc. the nerve. if people mind their own dirt in their backyard this world would still be sh.i.t.t.y but it would be a little better.

Heterophobia is a real word, fyi.
Niasia 1/4/10, 10:53:AM
@ Caramel cat
You hit the nail on the head. This is unfortunate. And I bet there are young women in the country suffering from abuses inflicted by heterosexual males. They equate homosexually to sexual deviance and that is sad. I don’t see any rush to litigation about the abuse inflicted upon women and young girls, which I am sure by far out weighs the affects of being gay. What about the lack of education better yet the stifiing of education. Ignorance breeds a lot of unfortunate things. Violence being one of the biggest issues. I am so happy I was fortunate to get an education. A higher education as well. Whats sad is that right here in this free country of United States, ignorant people wish they could adopt this type of law. People with access to free education but refuse to take advantage. They think just like these people. Knowledge is power. Put the qurans and bibles down and read a book!

They do. AIDS is what they spread. And in America a lot of DL men are spreading AIDS to unsuspecting women (in some cases, in some cases I think the women know the dude is gay but is in denial right along with the dude). I know it isn’t in 2010 but when AIDS first came out it was know as the Gay Disease because that is the community it was infecting first and fastest.

You would think that Uganda would have bigger fish to fry… I guess not. I for one, think that it’s wrong to condemn other people for being who they are. Noone on this Earth is God, to try to dictate how other people should live. As long as you’re not hurting anyone, I don’t think it should be anyone’s business. Gays are people just like us. & it’s very saddening that we haven’t accepted this & moved on from the topic in 2010. People are people & they deserve respect no matter what. I hope Uganda will change their minds… This is ludicrous.

STILL DON’T GET WHY THE AMERICANS WERE THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE.
WHY DOES AMERICA ACT LIKE THAT. ALWAYS TRYING TO “HELP” AND “FIX” OTHER COUNTRIES WHEN THERE ARE PROBLEMS IN YOUR OWN COUNTRY. THERE CRACK EMPIDEMIC IS STILL ALIVE AND WELL WHERE I AM. NEW YORK STATE JUST TOLD SCHOOLS THAT THEY CANNOT AFFORD TO PAY THEM THE MONEY THEY ARE OWED AND SOME SCHOOL DO NOT HAVE A RAINY DAY FUND. NOT TO MENTION NEW YORK STATE HAS THE HIGHEST TAXES OF ANY STATE IN THE NATION AND JOBS ARE LEAVING LEFT AND RIGHT, SO CRIME IS INCREASING. WHAT ABOUT THE 12 AND 13 YEAR OLD KIDS THAT ARE SMOKING WEED AND TOTING GUNS?? I MEAN TO ME, IF ANYONE WANTS TO GET OUT THERE AND PROTEST AND SPEAK FOR 3 DAYS ABOUT SOMETHING…SPEAK ON THAT SHYT. LEST WE ALSO FORGET RACISM AND OTHER FORMS OF DISCRIMATION (BASED ON RELIGION [MUSLIMS IN MANY CASES], SEX AND MARTIAL STATUS) STILL EXIST.
AMERICA…PLEASE LET’S CLEAN OUR YARD BEFORE WE TELL, OR “ENCOURAGE”, OTHERS TO DO WITH THEIR COUNTRIES.
AND BRING OUR TROOPS HOME GOT DAMMIT!

Hey girl!
American missionaries flock to countries like Uganda that have the share the same national conservative sentiment towards religion.
uhh yeah ok. 1/4/10, 11:41:AM
You know why their there because American consumption of OIL was 8% and now it’s 25% or something like that. They are surpassing the middle east and the Americans are trying to restructure as many African nations as they can to have a say in African affairs as well as protecting their interests. Not to mention they’re scared of China. I don’t trust anything America says.. For all you know those AMERICAN hurch fools were sent to shake things up and make the government look like fools. This is something America has done forever- make the leadershipt out to be dummies..

@somali ninga: i beg to differ alot of gov’t officials are into that homosexual lifestyle. maybe there are some that put up a front. but definitely have homo tendencies.
and i dont understand that aids coming from homo crap. whats the difference between the bu.tt hole of a woman and a bu.tt hole of a man. alot of these women these days allow a man to do anything to their bodies like go in their backside.so whats the difference someone tell me. the backside from a woman and a man carry fudge in it .hmm.

uhh yeah ok. 1/4/10, 11:46:AM
How come homosexuality was off the radar in America not too long ago and now your whole damn country is gay?
How long did it takes blacks to get rights and the homos get it over night?
not that they shouldn’t but I don’t think their lifestyle should be imposed on us like they do now.. Sorry.
