A Big F^%# You to XXL

Posted by Bossip Staff:

A loyal Bossip reader brought something to our attention from some genius writer at XXL magazine. In A Case of Too Much Cheese, the XXL bullshit starts with:

"Maybe I’m in the minority, but I think an artist’s job is to tell us what they want to say, not what we want to hear. When these things overlap it makes us feel all warm and fuzzy inside, but I hardly think it’s a (or the only) qualifying factor for a good (or classic) record. What I’m saying is, I think we should hold our “conscious” rappers to higher standards, and not let them get by solely on their consciousness (or their sneaker collection). "

"The writing is decent, but is bogged down by heavy handed messages and lightweight concepts"

"If Lupe was instead rhyming about say, crack cocaine, you would not even be talking about this record right now. Which reminds me, check out his first single from ‘03, “Pop Pop”"

The idiot at XXL who wr0te this doesn't make any logical sense. "Hold our "conscious" rappers to higher standards? Lupe is one of the most original artists in the game and the fact that he can come with a skateboard theme cut and knock the game up a bit testifies to his authenticity. There is room for at least 1 "conscious" rapper damn it, shit gets promiscuous when everyone is talking about killing niggas and pushing crack while no one has a criminal record to support that. "Heavy handed Messages"? LMAO, Lupe should tone the positivity down a bit and talk about some cocaine, murder, and banging 4 broads according to the genius at XXL. Make it more "light-handed" for the directionless FUBU's in the streets. Get the fuck out of here. The game needs more of Fiasco and less of the type of BS that came from XXL.
