BDR: “Kimora IS a Good Mother”

Russell Simmons wants to set the record straight regarding yesterday’s child support ruling:
“The fact is, we’ve had a pretty good partnership at sharing the girls in the past. There have been a few bumps in the road, and those bumps have led us to negotiate a minimum amount of time I’m guaranteed to see my kids. That deal is as follows: I have the girls one full week out of every eight, half of the summer, half of all the holidays, a full week at Christmas, and half of Spring Break.
Like in all good partnerships, contracts are meant to protect the partners but are usually not the only way the partners work together. If I show up in L.A., where she now lives, unannounced, I can call up Kimora and she will most likely send them right over. The same goes for when she comes to New York. We have always had a school in New York and a school with the same curriculum in L.A., so when the girls are with me in New York, we can spend quality time together. I can get up with them, take them to school and just be together.
Kimora consults with me about doctors or schools for the girls, but she’s always had final say in those areas. If we had an argument about a school, guess who’s going to win? But there are other
stipulations in our agreement where we have to make final decisions together. Anything having to do with business decisions pertaining to my kids cannot be done without my consent.
I’ve also seen a lot about people reading into the supervised visits stipulation. Kimora travels with a security guard and a nanny. In the past, she’s gotten really nervous that I never travel with security,
so if it makes her more comfortable to have her security and a nanny with us when I’m with my kids, that’s OK with me.
Finally, I want to say Kimora is a excellent mother and is doing a great job with them. My kids are studying a couple of foreign languages, they travel around the world, they practice yoga, ballet,
swimming, karate and piano, among other things…sometimes I think they do too much, but I trust in Kimora on this because she IS a good mother. Regarding the money, my kids live a tremendous life. They do have lots of security, nannies, educators, special programs, travel, chefs, on and on. Their mother manages all of those luxuries and I’m happy to provide for that.”

Like i said before, there is no benefit for men to get married and have kids. The whole notion of fatherhood in the eye of modern day society is “DISPOSABLE”. Men are viewed as sperm donors and as monthly ATM cards. Why wasn’t he at least granted joint custody? If you can take over 480.ooo dollars a year in child support, then why is he only granted visitation rights as if he’s some sort of long distant pervy uncle? Like i said, brothas’ don’t get married. If your paternal instincts start kickin’ in, get a dog, it’s less expensive + no aggravation.

I know many of you men and women have child support orders and are aware of how they work. It has nothing to do with her income. It is a portion of his income. That’s why some of yall men are only paying $25 a month cause you don’t make no money. And it takes considerably more than that to raise a child, but that it the courts order. Grow up and worry about how well you take care of your own damn kids. I’m sure Kimora’s doing her part and isn’t just having the kids live off of the 20k a month.

The court determined the amount of child support Russ has to pay for each child. It doesn’t matter if we think $480K is too much or too little. The court looks at the following factors to determine child support:
1. age of children
2. ability of non-custodial parent to pay (based on income from all sources)
3. earning capacity of the custodial parent (based on income from all sources)
4. Other responsibilities of the parents
Prior to determining child support, each parent must provide a financial declaration that fully discloses his/her income from all sources.
Bottom line people, this how it’s done in Family Courts all across the uS.
Russ and Kimora don’t have a problem with their custody agreement and child support arrangement and neither should y’all. Futhermore, who is to say Russ wants joint custody. Y’all don’t know if he asked for it or not, so stop speculating. Given he and Kimora live on different coasts, it makes sense for ONE parent to be the custodial parent so as not to disrupt the lives of the children. I swear some of y’all don’t have the good sense GOD gave to a gnat.

I understand your viewpoint, but I think it’s extremely irresponsible to admonish men that they shouldn’t get married, based on stories about people you don’t know and probably will never meet. Do I see Eddie Murphy, a celebrity, as representative of black men at large? Of course, not. That’s silly. This is celebrity gossip, and we’re based in real life with real choices and real life decisions that have long-lasting effects, and the stats point out that dismal fact over and over again.

I work with the public too and I see it just as much. For some reason we help to encourage a lot of this by “airing our dirty laundry.” Others never do that.

I think another way of looking at this is “why would one group of people suddenly change their opinion on marriage?” Some would throw out the casual “men are dogs” or something to that effect but I don’t think you are one of those people. The social structure has changed drastically and remaining single has become more and more of an option.

Yes, I agree that our social structure as a whole has changed, and the number of unwed mothers has increased across the racial spectrum, but the numbers still show that there is a disproportionate impact in our community. As far as my earlier post, I was referencing a snippet of an op-ed I read by Bob Herbert of the NY Times:
“His comments came as the Center for Labor Market Studies at Northeastern University in Boston was compiling data that revealed a dubious milestone. In 2006, for the first time in U.S. history, a majority of all births to women under 30 — 50.4 percent — were out of wedlock. Nearly 80 percent of births among black women were out of wedlock.
By comparison, when John F. Kennedy was elected president in 1960, just 6 percent of all births were to unmarried women under 30.”
I will note that Herbert also points out that a significant factor in the number of single-parent households is the difficulty of some young men in finding employment that pays enough to support a family.
Speaking for myself, I know that women being single well into their 30s and up no longer carries the stigma it once did, but when it comes to becoming a parent, I personally want to reserve that life-changing event until I’m married.
I thought this was another interesting segment of the study referenced earlier by the Center for Labor Market Studies:
“The marriage rates of all native-born young males and young black males (22-32 years old) in the U.S. are strongly correlated with the annual earnings of these young men. The higher their annual earnings, the more likely they are to be married. Among native-born black males, those men with earnings over $60,000 were four times more likely to be married than their peers with annual earnings under $20,000.”

I 100% agree and concur. I’ve actually read similary studies that traced the decline in marriage directly to the “War on Poverty” by Harry Truman-John F Kennedy. The changes of this adminstration made it economically counterproductive for the lower cl***** (we know that blacks disproportionately belong to this cl***** and why) to get married, particularly if they had children.
The contributing factor that marriage traditionally provided was stability. Not just for families, but collectively for a community.
As the laws read now there are several goverment backed benefits that are negatively affected if you are married. These need to be changed. It’s that simple and you will see rates rise.

I agree with you regarding the laws that should be changed to foster higher rates of marriage among people with lower incomes. There are still significant marriage penalties affecting those who can least afford them. And I believe as the institution of marriage is eroded, the stability of our households, and of our children, is at stake.

You can’t base your views about society at large on a celebrity marriage — really, you can’t. Should white men not get married after reading about the huge settlement that Paul McCartney paid to Heather Mills or that Steven Spielberg paid to Amy Irving (approx. $100 million)?
Sydney, not once did I imply that one should have children out of wedlock – I simply stated that marriage shouldn’t be an option, due to the unfair divorce and child support laws…And trust me, my stance is not based solely on the misfortunes of these male celebrities, but also on what i’ve observed in my own experiences with friends and colleagues at work. Trust me, the divorce and child support laws are so gender biased, i just find it unfathomnable why any guy would get married, especially if he’s only making a middle cl***** salary ($65 – 85,000 a year). Most people are under the false *****umption that the “PRENUP” is solely for the rich, but in reality, it’s for the lower to upper middle cl***** because technically they have more to lose re alimony, child support and *****ets accrued during the marriage…In most cases it can be financially devestating to the male…Especially if he or (in some cases) she had the misfortune of marrying in a “NO-FAULT” divorce state, suchas California. In closing, i’m merely suggesting that guys should avoid breeding and(or) marrying until the laws are more balanced and objective towards both genders.

I’m aware of, but not well-versed, in divorce and child support laws, but I’ve heard that the laws in California are more stringent than those in many other states. And you’re certainly not the first man whom I’ve heard make such statements about the financial pitfalls of divorce. I just think that the positives of marriage far outweigh the negatives, particularly in regards to the stability and support it provides to the family structure.
As far as men avoiding breeding, I think we both know the likelihood of that happening is next to nil, especially when some equate sexual performance to manhood.

I truly commend Russell for supporting Kimora and acknowledging she is a good mother…though she can be a little out of pocket…she loves her girls and he knows it. I commend him on not complaining about the amount of money he has to pay to support his kids.
The only ones that need to be in agreement with this are the two parents. We aren’t raising their kids for them. If they like it and the kids are good then its “all good”. Good to see a couple that gets along great despite the breakup. Keep it up.
