Earthquake in Haiti May Prove Catastrophic, Hundreds Feared Dead

Haiti was hit with a massive earthquake late this afternoon just outside the capital city of Port-au-Prince. The full effects of the quake haven’t been assessed but in a country that has a long history of political strife and poverty the results could be devastating.

A major earthquake struck southern Haiti on Tuesday, knocking down buildings and power lines and inflicting what its ambassador to the United States called a catastrophe for the Western Hemisphere’s poorest nation.

“The only thing I can do now is pray and hope for the best,” the ambassador, Raymond Alcide Joseph, told CNN.

Witnesses reported heavy damage throughout the capital, Port-au-Prince, including to the president’s residence and century-old homes nearby, and The Associated Press reported that a hospital collapsed. President Rene Preval is safe, Joseph said, but there was no estimate of the dead and wounded Tuesday evening.

The magnitude 7.0 quake struck about 10 miles (15 kilometers) southwest of Port-au-Prince shortly before 5 p.m. Joseph said one official of his government told him houses had crumbled “on the right side of the street and the left side of the street.”

“He said it is a catastrophe of major proportions,” Joseph said.

Frank Williams, the Haitian director of the relief agency World Vision International, said the quake left people “pretty much screaming” all around Port-au-Prince. He said the agency’s building shook for about 35 seconds, “and portions of things on the building fell off.”

“None of our staff were injured, but lots of walls are falling down,” Williams said. “Many of our staff have tried to leave, but were unsuccessful because the walls from buildings and private residences are falling into the streets, so that it has pretty much blocked significantly most of the traffic.”

Many of the homes in Port-au-Prince are concrete-block structures built on steep hillsides. Mike Godfrey, an American contractor working for the U.S. Agency for International Development, said “a huge plume of dust and smoke rose up over the city” within minutes of the quake — “a blanket that completely covered the city and obscured it for about 20 minutes until the atmosphere dissipated the dust.”

The quake was centered about 6 miles (10 kilometers) underground, according to the USGS. A magnitude 5.9 aftershock followed soon afterward, about 30 miles further west, followed by a 5.5 aftershock closer to the location of the first quake.

When aftershocks hit, “there is a kind of wail as people are very frightened by it,” Williams said. “But most people are out in the streets and just kind of looking up.”

The Rev. Kesner Ajax, executive director of a school in the southwestern city of Les Cayes, said several people were hurt when they rushed to get out of the building. Two homes in the area collapsed and the top of a church collapsed in a nearby town, he said, but he did not know of any fatalities.

Les Cayes, a city of about 400,000 people, is about 140 miles (225 kilometers) southwest of Port-au-Prince.

Jean Bernard, an eyewitness in Port-au-Prince, told CNN the city had no electricity Tuesday evening. The first quake lasted about 40 seconds, he said.

“A lot of houses [and] buildings went down, and people are still running all over the streets,” Bernard said. “People are looking for their wives, looking for their husbands and their kids. It’s scary.”

Luke Renner, an American staying in Cap-Hatien, a city nearly 100 miles north of Port-au-Prince, said he was sitting at his home when “the whole world started to shake.”

“It felt like our whole house was balancing on a beach ball,” Renner said. “We heard the whole community screaming and in an uproar during that whole 20- to 30-second window.”

“I haven’t seen any structural damage here,” Renner continued. “With the sun setting it may be difficult to tell. In the morning we’ll know for sure.”

Because of the earthquake’s proximity to the capital, and because the city is densely populated and has poorly constructed housing, “it could cause significant casualties,” said Jian Lin, a senior geologist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts.

Haiti’s government is backed by a U.N. peacekeeping mission established after the ouster of former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide in 2004. Efforts to contact the U.N. mission were unsuccessful Tuesday evening, but former President Clinton — now the U.N. special envoy for Haiti — said the world body was “committed to do whatever we can to assist the people of Haiti in their relief, rebuilding and recovery efforts.”

The disaster is the latest to befall Haiti, which has a population of about 9 million people and is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Hurricane Gordon killed more than 1,000 people in 1994, while Hurricane Georges killed more than 400 and destroyed the majority of the country’s crops in 1998.

In 2004, heavy rains from Hurricane Jeanne — which passed north of the country — caused landslides and flooding that killed more than 3,000 people, mostly in the northwestern city of Gonaives. Gonaives was hit heavily again in 2008, when four tropical systems passed through.

A tsunami watch for Haiti, the Dominican Republic and parts of Cuba following the earthquake has been canceled, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

Eighty percent of Haiti’s population lives under the poverty line, according to the CIA World Factbook.

This is definitely a terrible tragedy. Our thoughts are with the Haitian people.

    Matthew 24:4-14

4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.

5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.

10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.

11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.

12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.

13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

I was at ile a vaches in the south of Haiti at the end of november and let me tell you that this is the most beautiful country I have ever seen. The beaches are paradisiac, the food is to die for and the people are so welcoming. I am tired of seeing the degrading pictures of that country as if it had no treasures and beauty. It was once called ‘la perle des antilles’ which means the Caribbeans pearl and that is for a reason. Yes it is poor and politically unstable but there is much more to this country. Until you see it for yourself, you will only see what the media shows you and that is sad. Check out google for pictures of Haiti.

In the mean time, my prayers are also with the people of Haiti on this tragic day.

We understand, I have so many friends that are suffering right now because their family is their and they can not get in touch with them, it is so sad some of us are so helpless right now because we do not know what to do and do not know where to start in helping the people there, I bring up voodoo, because we do not know the hour of our short coming and I know some are atheist, but there are good christian people in Haiti and my prayers good out to them.

I have a few relatives in Port Au Prince right now including a child. It is so sad. THankfully a few of them have recently left but there are some that are still there. The below is a quote I read this morning from Haitian-American author Edwidge Danticat:

“Life is already so fragile in Haiti, and to have this on such a massive scale, it’s unimaginable how the country will be able to recover from this.”

    ——————————————

All Haitians are in my thoughts and prayers. I’m so very, very sorry that such a tragedy has befallen the people of this country. The world is with you now.

I saw these resources posted on another website, voices.washingtonpost.com/livecoverage/2010/01/haiti_earthquake_how_to_help.html?hpid=topnews, for those who would like to help:

To donate to specific relief efforts in Haiti:

    Mercy Corps
    Save the Children
    International Red Cross
    World Vision
    UNICEF
    International Medical Corps

The State Dept has set up hotline for Americans to inquire after family in Haiti: 888-407-4747

Haitian musician Wyclef Jean is asking people on Twitter to donate to his organization Yele Haiti:

@wyclef: Haiti is in need of immediate AID please text Yele to 510 510 and donate $5 toward earthquake relief.

You can also find updated information and general ways to help during disasters at ReliefWeb and USAID.

  • Sydney™

Here are a few more resources:

The State Department also just announced this:

“For those interested in helping immediately, simply text “HAITI” to “90999″ and a donation of $10 will be given automatically to the Red Cross to help with relief efforts, charged to your cell phone bill.”

A facebook page has been set up for Washington, D.C. area residents to post information about fund raising events, food/clothing drives, and volunteer opportunities.

The whole world is falling short of the grace of God. A lot of people believe in God but are not practicing morals. The United States has taken God out of a lot of things, California yes, I will believe will be next, lot of christian do believe in God but they are not practicing Christians {giving, loving, kindness and showing forgiveness}.

The News is not lying on Haiti and all above are corrected. The news is concentrating on the people not the scenery, people are so angry about how Haiti is being represented, being poor and all but it is an accurate representation. People need to be willing to deal with the truth and the truth is painful. Haiti needs financial and spiritual help.

We all are tested down here on earth, we must keep faith in our Lord and Savior and if you don’t believe in that, than be willing to except the a&& whooping you are going to get from the devil.

@ everybody blaming it on religion!!!

religion has nothing to do with this tragic event. And knowing how both monotheist and polytheist Haitians are..I bet theirs a lot of them blaming this on some type of wrath of God. This has nothing to do with religion and all to do about science. Hait and DR sit on the carribian plate which are surrounded by two major tectonic plates (north and south american) and two smaller plates. So the geographical location is the cause of this tragic event.

My heart truly goes out to all my Haitian people out their. I hope this administration will do better then katrina

Haitians are very resilient and we will get through this but its going to take help and donation from everyone… i’ve already donated money last night & even if you don’t have a lot, please make an effort even if its dollar! please do what you can! this could have happened anywhere.

  • MS. SIPPI

What a devastating catastrophe.. Thanks to Geology.. I knew that when the quake shook Cali that that was just the beginning but.. I did not think it would rickershay to Haiti.. Knowing Haiti’s history makes it seems that much more ironic.. They have a long extended history of witch craft.. I feel for those people. Having lived through Katrina I know the wales of disaster. My sincere prayers go out them..

  • Trelawny

Big Up the haitian people!!!! the government is not my concern

  • Sticky-n-Sweet

    @drenk

    ————-
You Pharisee! Your heart only goes out to the “good Christian people” of Haiti?! You know, when Katrina hit N.O. and the Twin Towers fell, good Christians were affected too. God does not need you to falsely interpret his desires and motives! You false prophet, attempting to ca*stigate others and yet you are the one sinning! Don’t bother praying for anyone, nobody needs your stuck up a*ss with your phony prayers

  • Re

What the hell??? Haiti is in the pacific ring of fire…meaning, they’re prone to earthquakes, hurricanes, and volcanic activity.

    SMH @ people.

  • Trelawny

@ ATL: seriously if you ever need toilit-paper you can use your “bible” for all me care

  • leta354

People – please donate if possible – I know a lot of us are on the struggle but Wyclef’s organization is a mere $5.00 that will be added to your phone bill…I did the history on these 3 organizations and the money DOES go to the people – not the administration, trips to Vegas, etc…

•Donate through Wyclef Jean’s foundation, Yele Haiti. Text “Yele” to 501501 and $5 will be charged to your phone bill and given to relief projects through the organization.

•Operation USA is appealing for donations of funds from the public and corporate donations in bulk of health care materials, water purification supplies and food supplements which it will ship to the region from its base in the Port of Los Angeles. Donate online at http://www.opusa.org, by phone at 1-800-678-7255 or, by check made out to Operation USA, 3617 Hayden Ave, Suite A, Culver City, CA 90232.

•Ben Stiller’s Stillerstrong campaign will be temporarily diverting all donations to support the Haiti relief effort.

  • Sanjor

For all you inconsiderate, stupid, low level miscreants on here saying GOD brought this on Haiti because of voodoo, may God have mercy on your ignorant souls. I don’t know about your God, but my God doesn’t operate this way. This was an act of nature, not God!!

  • dionneg

it’s the voodoo that more than half the population practice.

  • tg

Well it looks like everyone is calling for help in the USA, England, etc. – so hopefully Haiti will get the aid they need, asap. I’ll be Praying for the people who have not been found yet. My heart goes out to Haiti and it’s people. I feel bad – Haiti is always getting a bad rap, but in reality – they are our brothers and sisters, too. Stop hating and start loving.

“it’s the voodoo that more than half the population practice.”

Sad but true I believe 2010 is a year of judgement for those countries who indulge themselves in sin…ironic how the demons they converse with using voodoo never warned them of the pending earthquake. America’s judgement will be worse we are in the last days…..REPENT

  • LaDiva

    @ dionneg

Not everyone practices voodoo in Haiti…
There are alot of places in the world who practice voodoo, even in the USA but not everyone practices voodoo…

  • bluekid

    @ @ Sticky-n-Sweet

I did not read all that you said, but true the whole country does need prayer.
As for as the insults, I could care less people are entitled to what they believe what is right for them, you can not change my mind and I am not trying to change yours, but it is since-less to argue a pointless point. It is not about you are me it’s about the people in Haiti.

In time of trouble we all know how to call on the Lord and you do not have to be a trained theologian to call on the Lord.

I’m just posting here if you don’t like what I’m saying just ignore me.

  • LaDiva

    @ KocaKola

I am aware of the history Haiti has with voodoo.
There are plenty of places all over the world that practice voodoo.
I’m frankly just tired of ppl always downing haiti as a voodoo island…

Ghana has offered a million dollars to Haiti Amen!

  • C-Red

Um to everybody who keeps saying Haitian do too much voodoo. Haiti is 90 percent christian (85percent catholic) and only 10 percent voodoo so cut out the ignorance. Besdies there are plenty of heathans in the US so don’t use that. We are good hearted people who just ot screwed over. we are the first independant black nation. we won our own independance. Unfortunately France made us pay them reparations afterwards and the Unitd Nations did not acknowledge us until after we paid France there 22 billion dollars, which wasn’t paid off until the 1960′s. the United States and other countries didn’t want us to influence their slaes so they had embargoes and isolate dus for a while. Since then we have just had too mny corrupt government officials. But we are tought people and we will never lose faith. we will rebuild and become a much stronger country

  • bluekid

    C-Red
God bless you and we pray for you.

  • PIERRE

@KocaKola,bluekidand all the rest of the dumb, blind, death and ignorant holy than though Pharisees on this site.

You guys are all full of hatred. Thats why the world is the way it is. YOu hate anything diffrent from you. Chrisitans hate homosexuals, they hate women they hate mislims they hate everyone. But thats not christlike jesus hung out in the hood with the prostitutes and the drugdealers. Im of hatian decent and I am part of the hatian voudoud tradition. We believe in one god and the pantheon of his angels (spirits). This earthquake has nothing too do with individuals religion. Matter fact alot of chrisitans died in this disaster including Monsignor Joseph Serge Miot, the archbishop of Port-au-Prince, hundreds of churches crashed too the floor, also many chrisitians and missionaries died. Maybe you should blame your god for those destructions. But I believe in one god and that god does not kill or casue harm too anyone for their any reason. Man does that.

    1/13/10, 12:13:pm

  • bluekid

    @ Pierre: I agree,
I Never said I was a Christian, I said christian do not practice what they preach. Meaning those who claim to be Christian but do not do what they should do to be Christ like; “meaning anybody”

I don’t hate anyone God bless you and keep you and forgiveness is the best we can do for each other. Instead of hating and insulting one another we need to pray for one another. Only an idiot would reply to an idiot. So if anyone see something they do not agree with and find offense and is an idiotic person, that person diffidently needs prayer.

So maybe I need prayer too!!!

  • bluekid

My eyes are open I’m not blind, I see and I tell the truth and the truth hurt but it also may set you free.

  • bluekid

The Illuminati is live and at work in Haiti, I know you guys don’t want to hear this, but is it possible this earthquake was man made???

  • mzdiva

    wtf

    no earthquake is man made

    same as hurricanes,tornadoes,etc

    while unfortunate

    these things happen

the only thing manmade are wars

  • bluekid

Why don’t you apologize for being a fvcking spammer, huh? All you do is sh1t all over this site with your advertising. I’ve never seen you make a single decent post here, just spam spam spam. The fact that you don’t even bother paying attention to what the posts are about before you drop your advertising into the comments says more about you than your weak-@ss “apology.”
