Wyclef’s Appeal: How To Help Victims Of Earthquake In Haiti, Images Included

Posted on January 13th, 2010 - By Bossip Staff

Categories: News, Wyclef

As the death toll continues to rise in Haiti, Wyclef continued his humanitarian efforts by speaking out publicly in an effort to encourage people across the world to donate to aid efforts. Read his statement and how you can help below

“Haiti today faced a natural disaster of unprecedented proportion, an earthquake unlike anything the country has ever experienced. The magnitude 7.0 earthquake – and several very strong aftershocks – struck only 10 miles from Port-au-Prince. I cannot stress enough what a human disaster this is, and idle hands will only make this tragedy worse. The over 2 million people in Port-au-Prince tonight face catastrophe alone. We must act now. President Obama has already said that the U.S. stands ‘ready to assist’ the Haitian people. The U.S. Military is the only group trained and prepared to offer that assistance immediately. They must do so as soon as possible. The international community must also rise to the occasion and help the Haitian people in every way possible.”

Many people have already reached out to see what they can do right now. We are asking those interested to please do one of two things: Either you can use your cell phone to text “Yele” to 501501, which will automatically donate $5 to the Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund (it will be charged to your cell phone bill), or you can visit www.Yele.org and click on DONATE.

The full extent of the devastation in Haiti won’t be determined for some time. Bossip will continue coverage of Haiti as more details emerge. We’ve compiled photos from Twitter and the web below for you to get an idea of the damage.

How much of the donated money will really go to help the people, not much if any. If we check back with this country one year, five years, or even ten years from now they will still be in the same predicament.

It is a know fact that donated money DOES NOT HELP THE VICTIMS! It goes into the pockets of the government, executives, etc…..Look at all those “Help Save the Children” commercials. They have been on the air since the 1970′s, over thirty years, and you mean to tell me those children have not been saved yet.

Look at the Katrina victims and the city!!!!! Just recently it was found out that there was a huge warehouse the size of three football fields filled with supplies for the victims. The warehouse was filled but the items were not given out. Some of the victims were also living in trailers that were made with cancer causing materials. The materials also brought on other harmful and deadly things to the body.

However, if anyone feels the need to help out anyway to clear your mind; body; conscious; and soul, then you should do so.

  • Keepnit100

Me too, I will be donating as well.

  • B3 Fearless

Wyclef does so much to bring aid to Haiti all of the time. He has never forgotten where he comes from. I respect that!

I’m going to donate what I can because that country always seems to be hit with something – whether it’s natural disasters or misappropriation of funds with their government. I’m going to seriously pray for the ppl of Haiti.

  • drenk

DAMN i gave to the red cross today! Wouldve rather given directly to Yele.org

  • Nique

This has been on my mind all day….

Words can not express the sadness I feel over this. I wish there was more I could do to help- though most of my family live in the states, I still feel the devastation this has caused.

    When it rains…it pours…

  • drenk

    @ getting down

i gotta disagree with you because Haiti isnt part of the US, he would be under a lot more scrutiny if it was part of the US that got hit this bad

  • FiveStarish

Wyclef will definitely get the money to the people, in my opinion. Very sad disaster…feel so bad for the children. Kids are so young and vulnerable that this will change their lives forever. So much loss is just devastating.

  • Txhustla15

@Getting Down, I agree definitely but to a degree – Wyclefs organization, International Red Cross and some of the other groups involved in the Haiti mission do truly great work throughout the world. Lol we are not involving FEMA and some of the other private organizations or people should avoid donating to some of them as I agree that some of them truly need to be investigated….

  • http://customcalendars4u2.com Taisha from Chicago!

This is a very sad and unexpected catastraphy

  • B3 Fearless

@getting down I hear where you’re coming from and that’s why I feel if ppl are able to they should really help out by physically going and helping. With Katrina ppl could still get involved and help build houses with Habitat for Humanity or assist with a couple of non-profits down there that actually do help ppl by giving food and clothes.

The fact of the matter is most ppl will look at this catastrophe like they did Katrina and say “Poor them,” maybe say a prayer and move on with their day. I think the least a person can do is contribute financially. Yes the funds do tend to go the governments first in order to distribute it to the ppl. Does that system sometimes fail yes? But does sitting around doing nothing and complaining about the system help? No.

People need to do what they can to help other fellow human beings whether it’s done physically or financially I think any form of help will be appreciated.

Does the system sometimes fail yes?

    *********************************************

The system fails all the time because depending on who you are and the color of your skin, they do not want to system to work and, there are crooks involved.

However, as I previously said, if people feel the need to donate then they should. And/or physically help out as you mentioned.

Many years ago I had money taken out of each paycheck to donate to a huge, well known charity. Years later there was a huge scandal that the executives (of this charity) was stealing the money for many, many years and only less than 10 % of the donated money was going to help the people who needed it.

The scandal was extremely bad and many of the executives had to step down and some went to jail.

Not to mention the history the US has with Haiti. They owe them, big time. The US has messed with Haiti for centuries. It’s about time they stood up.

  • 2Sweet

GOD BLESS HAITI! And Wyclef actually looks handsome in that pic! Ok!

  • AWWWWWWWWWWSHADDAAAP!!!!!

‘Hundreds of thousands,’ Syd??? I have heard no such tally on news reports I’ve seen. That seems a bit exaggerated. With such a large number, they would have bound to put that at the top of the story.

  • Sticky-n-Sweet

Yele Haiti is very open about how much of the money gets to the people. If you go to the website, they have a section where you can see donors (if they want to be named), how much, and what the money went to. It’s why I support Yele Haiti. Red Cross on the other hand…lost a lot of cred with me after Katrina. Plus it was run by a Republican’s wife for many years, and I don’t want GOPers touching too much of my or anybody else’s money after what this country has been through over the last 8 years!

  • Sydney™

    @Awww

That’s what cited in the story that CNN has posted on its homepage, CNN.com, but that’s the highest estimate I’ve personally seen.

Port-au-Prince, Haiti (CNN) — The Haitian prime minister said Wednesday several hundred thousand people may have died in Haiti’s powerful earthquake.

“I hope that is not true, because I hope the people had the time to get out,” Jean-Max Bellerive told CNN.

“Because we have so much people on the streets right now, we don’t know exactly where they were living. But so many, so many buildings, so many neighborhoods totally destroyed, and some neighborhoods we don’t even see people.”

  • getting down

It will interesting to see how much Haiti is help because they were already living on $ 1-2 dollars a day (according to some reports).

The U.S. has never helped any countries that has predominately black people living in them get out of poverty…If the U.S. had helped in the past, most other countries will have followed suit.

So right now, for the most part, it’s all politics and the spotlight is on so everybody is playing their position, in a fake, phony and political kind of way.

  • Sydney™

Awww, this is from the BBC website:

UN chief Ban Ki-moon said the head of the UN mission in Haiti and his deputy were among more than 100 staff missing.

The 7.0-magnitude quake, Haiti’s worst in two centuries, struck south of Port-au-Prince, on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive told US network CNN he believed more than 100,000 people had died.

The Red Cross says up to three million people are affected.

  • *aintnoshameinmygame*

Its very sad that some people would take advantage of this situation and steal money….i’m still wondering what happenned to the money i donated to the Katrina Disaster ….however, i do want to donate to this cause, $5 bucks at least…..

  • AWWWWWWWWWWSHADDAAAP!!!!!

Syd, that’s mind-boggling. And particularly tragic for those poor people who had already been harnessed with a harsh quality of life.

  • Dot Dash Dot

Question for you guys. Everyone is saying help Haiti. Yeah they need help in a moajor way. But how many Americans including children are living int eh streets because thier parents lsot thier job. Look at Detroit. That place is going down hill fast. People losing thier jobs, homes everything. When will the US stand up for us?

  • deesac

it does not sound like much but what if everyone in the US sent one dollar to red cross a known source.

    ______________________________________________

That is not entirely true. The US has never lifted any country, black or otherwise, out of poverty. I’m not aware of one third world nation that entered the G20 because of the U.S.A’s help. If you are, please let me know.

such a devastating tragedy! my hear & prayers go out to all the victims as well as the mnay Haitians in this country who are away from their families…R.I.P to the lost lives

  • AWWWWWWWWWWSHADDAAAP!!!!!

You have to respect Toussaint L’Overture. He put fear into the hearts of the White man at a time when a successful Black revolution was unheard of. But, unfortunately, Haitians have inherited some residual animosity as a result.

  • Dot Dash Dot

    @Wendy,

Wow you must be a dumb one. Hopefully no terriorists are looking at this site. You never give out the location of a ship.

  • Soul Ese

Hopefully help will get to them soon. Only thing that makes this more heartbreaking than it already is are the amount of posts/comments I’ve read about these poor people deserving this because some of them still cling to their indigenous relious practices.

  • MADE.IN.NY

To have your whole world turned upside down in the blink of an eye is horrific. I deeply feel for them.

I have a couple of close friends (one is my BFF) who can not get in contact to find out if their family is okay. I’m just praying that all will be well for them, but these pictures are devastating. I will find a way to help.

  • drenk

    @Gimmeabreak 78

while the US has never pulled any country out of poverty, the US does have a habit of invading or bombing brown and black countries

  • Gimmeabreak 78

Haiti was already the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, and being situated in the Caribbean, it’s also quite succeptible to hurricanes, too. It seems so unfair that this tiny nation should have to experience both types of natural disasters.

I’m not sure how the country will recover from this, because it always seems to be on the precipice of some kind of disaster or another.

The US bombs and invades any country it feels threatens its intrests or has a natural resource it desires, no matter what color its inhabitants are.

You’d better believe that if we thought Australia had oil and didn’t want to give it to us on our terms, we would go take it from them.

Don’t forget that during WWII we bombed all manner of white countries. I don’t know if you consider Asians “brown” too for the sake of your argument. (Perhaps you consider them “yellow”, idk), but the Vietnam and Korean wars certainly involved a lot of bombing on our part as well.

People need to also give something other than money. How about sending clothes? Money will only get food and water and pay for the relief efforts. But they are going to need clothes as well. They need tents, blankets and such. Money isn’t everything.

  • LIBRA6N7

@ Dot Dot Dash yes there are plenty of Americans that are struggling right in our country because like you said there parents have lost their jobs. But let us not forget that there is always somebody somewhere doing a little bit worse than we are and we should be thankful for what we have. I for one have family in Haiti right now that we do not know how they are where they are, are if their even alive so yes the country does need are help right now but they also need are prayers. I have seen and heard so many negative comments but unless your living it you will never know. Just keep in mind but there for the grace of GOD go I.

  • Dot Dash Dot

    @LIBRA6N7

Actually I have lived it. I was living in Hawaii when Los angeles had a major eathquake. My sister and nephew were trapped in thier apartment building and no one knew anything. Also the US is always expected to rescue people. WE are no longer that super power that we were before. I have not said any negative comments. I love my country and want the best for us first and foremost.

  • Well Alright…….

Our family is going to give money, and donate blood. FYI….Five geological scientists predicted that a major earthquake was going to happen in the Hispanola region, back in 2008. They presented a paper during the 18th Caribbean Geological Conference, back in March 2008, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The paper stated that a fault zone (named Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault zone) on the south side of the island posed a major seismic hazard.

  • MissBr0nx

People if you can donate to yele and not red cross. The problem with red cross is that a lot of the money goes to pay top executives and only a small portion goes to the actual victims. Yele is known for donating the majority of the money directly to the people of haiti.

  • Well Alright…….

CNN just did an ariel view of the port and homes around that area, and the sight is horrific!! The prison is completely collapsed, and inmates that survived have escaped. The UN chief over there is dead, along with the second in command. They don’t have any heavy equipment vehicles, so therefore family members have to dig through the rubble to rescue their family members. People are out in the street, or walking around because they have absolutely nowhere to go. All the buildings are unstable. Very Very Horrific!!

and whats your point? how much of that was actual money and not that dollar amount in rice or grains. also how much of that was used to pay civil servants back pay as well as the crushing debt that the IMF and WB place on poor countries…? also just cuz a country pledges a certain amount doesnt mean theyll always give it. countries lined up to PLEDGE money for tsunami hit countries back in 2005, 8 months later thailand, sri lanka and other countries were still waiting for it

@ Chillin@Work- “Here is an FYI—-

In July 2004, $1.085 billion was pledged through 2006 at the World Bank Donors’ Conference. Donors included the U.S., Canada, the EU, France, Sweden, Spain, Germany, Japan, Switzerland, Greece, Norway, Mexico, and Ireland. This money was given to Haiti—”
    _____________________________________

First, if you are going to try to spout statistics and the like, PLEASE KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT.

That money was just that, PLEDGED. It was not received. Lots of companies, countries, multi-national corps PLEDGE money, but if it ever gets there, a whole dfferent subject. Pleded does not = received. Get it right.

Then lets talk about the about the manipulation of their currency, gourde and how the International Monetary Fund and Federal Reserve dang near own everything on/ in that Island, including the government. Everything there is fraud, they need another Duvalier Sr./ Toussaint ( def not jr), they need the ability to govern their own country, not dictated by France, Spain, US, etc.

**Dont start we can go on all day, they need help..**

@tx hustla- everything you said on point, as usual..

    @ Libra6n7

I have a question for you and everyone else.

If the US says help Haiti and we know it will be years before they are better; if some Haitians get on a boat and flee Haiti to come to the US, will the US take them into custody and return them right back? Remember that Haiti isn’t like Cuba. They get sent right back no matter what. Will this change that policy?

And I am not saying I am selfish, but I was int he military and people don’t like us, but always crying for us when there is trouble. That is why I have the attitude I have.

thanks for having the nerve to be educated and being able to read between the lines, (hard to do, now-a-days, obviously :( )

FYI: Please know the difference between pledging and money being received…

Please learn as much as you can about the IMF, Tri-Lateral Commission, United Nations, Federal Reserve, Council of Foreign Relations. If you can grasp/ overstand what they are about, you might be able to answer some of your own questions.

    I Love your brain, drenk…

    @always knew

i was born in a country that was constantly PLEDGED help, all the millions of dollars given were through military aid to fight “communism.” that whole pledging thing is BS anyways, theyll say “we’ll give you 1 billion dollars in agricultural aid” that translates to, LEASING farm equipment from the US (or whatever donor country) buying gas for the equipment from the donor country, buying seed and fertilizer from donor country, and then you have to pay it back

    True, Indeed…

I’m waiting on Barack to grow a pair and do the right thing, or at the very least, structure all immigration laws across the board. I have NEVER liked that policy. Cubans can stay. Haitians can’t. Everybody in the country is an immigrant..Some come willingly, others are forced, but the treatment of all should be the same regardless of background/country…

I wonder if Barack, will give them temporary protected status….We’ll see what happens…

Good point… Kudos for thinking about immigration policies that indirectly discriminate against some and reward others…

  • LIBRA6N7

@ Dot Dot Dash your right thats usually what they do they return them back to Haiti. Yes I feel as though the policy should be changed. Other countries dont like us and are always trying to find ways to hurt us. I don’t really know if I have a aswer to your questions. Its just sad that the world is in the shape that its in and instead of trying to find ways to improve we have people who want to tear it down more. I can understand your attitude and its your right to feel this way.

Thank you for posting the charities, Drenk. There’s also more information at whitehouse.gov and state.gov (for those who are still unable to contact their relatives).

Also, some good news for Wyclef Jean’s organization from the NY Times:

Update | 2:20 p.m. A news release from a company in Miami working with the Haitian singer Wyclef Jean to collect donations via text message says that the “Yele Haiti” foundation “has raised more than $250,000 in donations for the catastrophe in less than 12 hours of going live and aims to raise over $1 million a day as part of its grass-roots SMS text drive.”

The company explains that “In conjunction with all major mobile carriers, users can text ‘Yele’ to 501501 on their mobile device for a simple, one-step text-back confirmation on how to make the instant donation.”

    Take care, all.

  • CandyGURL

If you want to give to “yele” only. Text yele to 501501 and they will automatically charge $5.00 to your mobile You can donate up to 6 times. That’s how I donated to the cause. Shalom

    H.A.A.R.P. is real..

Create Earthquakes on demand wherever and whenever you wish on the earth. [Pages 18, 26 speak of using HAARP to create earthquake. However, our military discovered, by accident, how to create earthquakes using slightly different technology. Listen to the specific earthquake caused on page 47]. “The planetary-scale engineers tried to replace a ten by forty kilometer section of the ionosphere with a ‘telecommunications shield’ of 350,000 copper needles tossed into orbit … when the military sent up a band of tiny copper wires into the ionosphere to orbit the planet so as to ‘reflect radio waves and make reception clearer’, we had the 8.5 Alaska earthquake and Chile lost a good deal of its coast. That band of copper wires interfered with the planetary magnetic field.”

    ALWAYS QUESTION AUTHORITY..

  • CandyGURL

I meant donate to the Haiti fund. You can txt yele. That is Wyclief’s organization.

  • Dajournalist

I respect Wyclef for his efforts now and prior to the earthquake. He is in my prayers along with the people this earthquake has effected.

May God continue to keep and protect you all.

  • Kiyanna

When I heard about the earthquakes that was my first thought that it was man-made.

  • Illuminate Truth “The Strong Rule the Weak, and the Wise Rule the Strong.”

    @ always knew

I agree wholeheartedly…human tragedy is human tragedy either way you dissect it. It is a dire situation in Haiti to say the least. I heard there are only two search and rescue teams on the WHOLE island and some of their whereabouts and well-beings are unknown…not to mention the poor condition of the equipment BEFORE the earthquake. When you consider the needs of a major relief effort, Haiti needs any and everything in abundance.

  • Illuminate Truth “The Strong Rule the Weak, and the Wise Rule the Strong.”

…and good for Wyclef. Its the gra.s.s.root organizations that will reach the people (see Katrina). When organizations, such as the Red Cross allow over 90 cents of every dollar donated fall under the umbrella of “administrative costs” (translation: THEIR pockets) it gives the impression of putting a “for profit” spin on human suffering. By all means, donate your heart’s intent to wherever or whomever you want….it’s just food for thought.

I have never met a Haitian who hasn’t said they go back to Haiti to work voodoo on others. You people sit here surprised that this happened to them. There is a lot EVIL going on in that country.

Every country the Haitians go to they ruin the area that they move in. The have an absurd smell to them and their cooking is horrendous!

Everyone can sit here and think that there isn’t something wrong with Haitians but there is. Those are evil people and that’s why things like this keep on happening.

I hope the majority of them are dead. That may cleanse the evil that has been going on in that country for years. These people put voodoo on people. They have killed a lot of people with that ish.

You all can sit there with your eyes closed.

The US needs to take care of the ppl that are here instead of going out and helping another country. There are ppl here who are hungry and dying too but the US does nothing for them. There are ppl here who can’t get a doctor but they are sending doctors to Haiti. We can’t even get insurance.

The US is always taking care of outside the country and then act like everything at home is ok.

  • CUSH

My prayers go out to the people of Haiti. I would also like to say don’t compare this to Katrina because it’s not. These people need help and because it is not apart of the United States the donations are need more than ever. People who suffered during Katrina received help now what they did with it is another story. I was one who survived and was helped. I know a lot of people who turn something so negative that happen in there live to something positive. Get your facts right before you speak on victims of Katrina. With that said these people will hurt far worst than we did anyone who can help please do help.

This morning i heard a young lady on the radio wanting people to donate tents because these people are sleeping on the streets. I’m sure there are different donations you can give other than money if you don’t trust the organizations. Please just do what you can. One person can’t do it all.

We respond to natural disasters but there is so much TRAGEDY right here in the states that we can get straightened out.

My prayers go out to the families and victims of this earthquake. I have sent my txt to 501501 and hopefully there will be more I can do.

  • Give In Good Faith

There is really not a lot you can do, but just hope & pray that the money goes to the victims & not in the Government’s pockets. It’s just like giving money to the churches, you never know if it is going to help the church or the Pastor/Bishop’s mistresses. Once you have done your part in giving, that is all you can do. Text YELE to 501501 & donate $5. I am struggling, but I did a little & hopefully it will help. Sad that a Black Country treats their citizens so bad & the people are so very poor there. Just goes to show you in these 3rd world Countries there is still greed & the sad part about it is the Country is run by Blacks.
