First off, all names are made up. Lauren, Mary, Kelly, and John, all of these names were made up and new at some point in time. The only reason they are more common is because they have had centuries to be replicated. Anytime someone hears a “Ka,” “”Ta,: or a “Sha” it is assumed that these names are made up Black ghetto names, hell some maybe, but a lot are not.

Example:

Akulina, Korzay, Sheombar, Tionnia–> All Russian names, but if a Black person has one of these names its called “ghetto.”

i can see what you mean. union does seem “civil war-ish”.

all i can say is that maybe the school is mostly white, and all they do is talk about Shakespeare, George Washington and Columbus, etc. and maybe the minority groups just arent recognized enough in education. i cant speak for that school, but i know my school wont push other minority groups and activities if it wasnt for the students themselves.

But my issue is with what they call it.. why does it have to be a black, asian etc etc.. why can’t it just be a “student union”…

i everyone knows that if anything is called “white” it’s deemed racist..

also, our black student union hosts one of the biggest (if not THE biggest) fundraisers that the university has throughout the whole school year, and asians, blacks, whites, etc. all show up and usually stay all night. now, if thats segregation, then i dont know what is.

i go to a catholic university (mostly white) and we have a black student union. we also have asian groups, and latino groups. since its a catholic school, irish studies is really big on campus. all of the groups are open to all, and to the public, and they all do different things for fundraising and put on different shows pertaining to its culture.

at least at my school, no one is segregating themselves. the clubs are there for people to learn and attend functions. at my school the black student union is trying to get more african american classes to be offered during the school year. its more about awareness and NOT segregation.
