Message to believers: I believe that everything happens for a reason, there is nothing in this world and of this world that happens because God didnt plan it. I also believe that God allows things to happen to wake us up and get out attention. Yes, bad things have occurred in Haiti, tremendously bad things, and people have been trying to raise awareness to the plight of Haiti for years and nothing has happened. But rewards comes to the longsufferer, for God hears all of your prayers. It took this major disaster to happen in Haiti to finally open the eyes of the rest of the world, and look at what has happened so far. Millions of dollars have been donated to this country in relief effort, we finally have a president in office that can change what is happening in Haiti. Yes lives were taken, and my condolences are with all of those who have lost loved ones, but Gos said it was there time to come home.
We must look at this way, it took a tragic incident to finally awaken the eyes of the world. After the catastrophe of what happened in Haiti, this country will be reborn, will have to rebuild from the ground up, and who knows, maybe the U.S led by President Obama will help give this country the structure it needs. God brings everything to fruition, in time…..and he definitely hears the prayers of all.

My sister died just last summer, and it hurt to see my father and mother that upset! I mena say what you will, but no parent wants to outlive their children, but it happens! Yes I am Sure there brothers who dislike seeing their sisters with White men, I think it has a lot to do with the fact that a good number of sisters seem to think that black men are no good and would rather be with a white man because white men are better. And not necessarily because they are treated better. White men cheat just like black men do. Once we realize that God is in control, the goal is to try our best to stay faithful against all odds. Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

I’ve been at some lows in life myself. Times when all I could do is scratch my head and pray because I didn’t know what I would do to get out of certain situations/overcome certain obstacles. I’ve only made it by the grace of God, praying every step of the way, including the times I didn’t fee like it. I refuse to let go.

My cousin’s wife is Haitian and yesterday we found out that she lost her uncle in the earthquake. Is it hard? Yes, but he spared many of her other relatives and for that we give God thanks.

My BFF still has not heard from any of her family, but the faith is still strong. We don’t stop praying. I have a close friend in the military who has not heard from her fam either, but the faith is still strong – we still continue to pray.

I am a child of God and am very spiritual and/or religious. I will forever acknowledge and love the Lord for all that he has done, and continues to do in my life as well as my family, and friends. My aunt once told me that some things aren’t meant for me in this case us to understand. The Haitian people shouldn’t be the first to forget their historial accomplishemnts. When the USA abolishes President’s Day, Independance Day, Memorial Day, and etc. then Haitian can consider whether they want to also forget about their own historical accomplishments.

How could someone be “individually” proud of their ancestor’s accomplishments when these accomplishments were made on behalf of a nation? It would make more sense to have nationalistic pride.

My point is that if I were Haitian I would feel pride in my ancestor’s and nation’s strides, even in the face of current events, because there IS much to be proud about. I know many Haitians, and from what I’ve seen, they are a proud people, so I would say that these celebrities that you mentioned are/were correct in their assessment. Even as a non-Haitian, but as a Black/African person, I can still feel that pride in Haiti, its accomplishmets, and its fighting spirit.

I don’t disagree with the first part of your post and I do believe that pride in oneself and culture can be simultaneous. My argument is that too often in the U.S., Haiti, UK, Canada, etc. national/cultural pride is put before pride in oneself. Its putting the cart before the horse and while asking for aid it seems pathetic. When Katrina happened people were not screaming about the proud American people for a reason.
I’m not trying to argue that other nations haven’t benefited from the mess in Haiti for the last 80 years but I attribute the success of these nations on the corrupt Haitian government corrupt Haitian police force, and low individual self esteem.
I wouldn’t advise Blacks in the United States to stay in poverty, be proud, and wait on Forty acres and a mule, so my advice to the Haiti’s individual citizens would be similar. Celebrate the past and Concentrate on the present.

Its not pathetic to be proud while accepting foreign aid, and expecially when that aid is a fraction of what Haiti has already contributed, i.e. 200+ years of free labor/land/resources, Louisiana Territories, $20 BILLION to France. They can’t afford the amount that it would really take to repay Haiti.

Additionally, if one does not have have some sort of pride when accepting aid then one becomes pathetic, akin to having one’s tail between one’s legs, or crawling because one does not want to appear to be on the same level as the donors.

Just because it happened in Haiti doesn’t mean that it’s any worse than in any other country. Yes, they have gone through their share of heartaches but so have others. Just like Katrina hitting NOLA and that tsunami hitting Southeast Asia, according to the Bible, it’s just one of many events that symbolize the Last Days and Jesus’ return. So none of it should be a shock.

And I agree with you that Haitians are not likely to get the $20 Billion back, just as African Americans are unlikely to get reparations. But this does not change the fact that true justice would require that it is paid. Too bad that we don’t live under true justice. The fact that the money is owed and still unpaid makes the debtor nations partially responsible for the current suffering. At the root of the word “reparations” is “repair”. If one refuses to pay reparations one cannot point and complain about the level of depravity exhibited by those suffering simply because one had refused to play the appropriate role in “repairing” the situation.

BTW, Aristede was raising the issue of having France repay the $20 Billion before he was kidnapped. You can doubt that $20 Billion would have helped Haiti to develop if you’d like, but Haiti probably won’t get $20 Billion EVEN NOW for international disaster aid.

If as you say $20 Billion would not have helped Haiti, then for the sake of consistency, I hope that you have abstained from dontating anything (including even the $5 or $10 in text messages that are promoted) AND that you go even further and broadcast to those who are prepared to donate that they shouldn’t. They should instead keep their money in their pockets since it is not possible for $5 to help if $20 Billion could not have helped.

Instead of giving Haiti aid, they should just give it what it is owed. Lybia was successful in getting Billions back from Italy in reparations recently. The US and the remainder of Europe was very unhappy about that because of the precedent it would set for other African and Caribbean nations, not to mention for African Americas.
