For Discussion: Brand New Study Shows That Men Are Marrying Women With Higher Incomes

Looks like men are marrying into money these days:

An analysis of census data released Tuesday by the Pew Research Center found that she and countless women like her are victims of a role reversal that is profoundly affecting the pool of potential marriage partners.

“Men now are increasingly likely to marry wives with more education and income than they have, and the reverse is true for women,” said Paul Fucito, spokesman for the Pew Center. “In recent decades, with the rise of well-paid working wives, the economic gains of marriage have been a greater benefit for men.”

The analysis examines Americans 30 to 44 years old, the first generation in which more women than men have college degrees. Women’s earnings have been increasing faster than men’s since the 1970s. “We’ve known for some time that men need marriage more than women from the standpoint of physical and mental well-being,” said Stephanie Coontz, a professor at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Wash., and research director for the Council on Contemporary Families, a research and advocacy group. “Now it is becoming increasingly important to their economic well-being as well.”

The education and income gap has grown even more in the latest recession, when men held about three in four of the jobs that were lost. The Census Bureau said Friday that among married couples with children, only the wife worked in 7 percent of the households last year, compared with 5 percent in 2007. The percentage rose to 12 percent from 9 percent for blacks, among whom the education and income gap by gender has typically been even greater.

“I’m not married, I would like to be married, and my friends are all in a similar situation,” said Dr. Rajalla Prewitt, a 38-year-old psychiatrist in New Jersey. “We’re having difficulty finding someone where there’s a meeting of the minds, where we can have the same goals and values. Particularly, African-American men who are educated want a traditional home where they are the breadwinner,” said Dr. Prewitt, who is a black woman.

In 2007, the Pew report found, median household incomes of married men, married women and unmarried women were all about 60 percent higher than in 1970. But among unmarried men, median household income rose by only 16 percent. These days, men who marry typically gain another breadwinner. In 1970, 28 percent of wives had husbands who were better educated, and 20 percent were married to men with less education. By 2007, the comparable figures were 19 percent and 28 percent. In 1970, 4 percent of husbands had wives who made more money; in 2007, 22 percent did.

College-educated wives are less likely to have a husband who is college-educated and in the highest income bracket than they were in 1970, and married women are less likely to have a husband who works.

“Among all married couples,” the report said, “wives contribute a growing share of the household income, and a rising share of those couples include a wife who earns more than her husband.” While marriage rates have declined over all, women with college degrees are still more likely to marry today than less educated women.

I know this study was centered around mostly white women.

Sooo why are educated “successful” black women having problems with getting married?

  • Kigali- I will check you

This report is confusing. For starters, most women major in the soft sciences that traditional arent the best paid. Men still have the lion share of degrees that make the most money. Secondly the expansion of the service sector and the decimation of the manufacturing sector saw an end to many male dominated jobs that have very high income with no need for an education. Lastly, who are these women who are marrying men who dont make as much? Are they older, do they have children from a divorce? Lastly anytime researchers use the word “increasingly” it is always relative.

    okay that’s true

but what about all these guys and their

to help them have the finer things in life

  • Niasia

Well from reading this article I see this is becoming an issue regardless of Race. I look at it like this a woman may make more money and have more education…. but like Jill Scott said “we need you”.

Why are black women disappointed and have not gotten a man? Case in point, let’s just survey the black men giving these comments. None of them know how to spell and write proper English. Case closed. I am not going to let my graduate school degree be degraded by someone who needs assertion for their broke self. No thanks! Let me be alone and travel the world instead of taking care of Tyrone and his 50 illegitimate kids! Close the door and don’t let it hit you on the behind on your way out.

Black men need to stop blaming the WHITE man, stopping taking their females as a means of justifications of past wrongs, and get a job. I mean a REAL one. Working at Mc Donald’s, Wal-Mart, or as a custodian/cook/construction worker does not count. Go to school and learn, rather than getting with the next fat ugly white girl to get the money for you!

Why am I even wasting my time? Half of you probably can’t even understand the proper English I am writing.

    Peace

Most of this is because of the loss of manufacturing and other jobs that non-college educated men have traditionally held have disappeared.

More women are going to college and are entering more male dominated fields.

I think it’s messed up everything is about money. To be perfectly honest, I prefer a humble man who is at least doing something. In my personal experience, men with the higher incomes are fake as hell. I love a man with good values and who works well his hands. As long as he is good to me, we can work the money situation out.

The man should be the dominating breadwinner in the family at all times! Now I will work, cook, clean, take care of him like I am supposed to (even in the bed) but I would always prefer my man to make more than me so that he never feels less than.

This isn’t about men and women per se, but about a changing economic reality for families. It’s about globalization, education and necessity.

The shifts in earnings capacity coincided with a marked decline in the share of Americans who are married. Among U.S.-born 30- to 44-year-olds, 60 percent were married in 2007, compared with 84 percent in 1970.

For African-Americans, the rates were even lower — 33 percent of black women and 44 percent of black men were married in 2007, the report said.
